  • High-performance smartphones, equipped with a digital camera and an application software, can render conventional bench-top laboratory instruments mobile at affordable costs. As the smartphone-based devices are portable and wireless, they have wide applications especially in providing point-of-care (POC) tests in resource-constrained areas. We developed a hand-held diagnostic system, Mobile SmartScope, which consists of a small optical unit integrated with a smartphone. The performance of the SmartScope was favorably compared with that of conventional light microscopy in detecting and quantifying red blood cells. We also evaluated the fluorescence detection limit of the SmartScope incorporated with a blue light-emitting diode and appropriate optical filters by using fluorescently labeled microbeads for intensity calibration.

  • A systematic analysis is made of suboptimal control for drag reduction. The influence of the amplitude of actuation (A) and the time scale of actuation ($\Delta$t(sub)a(sup)+) is evaluated. Two wall sensing variables are employed (∂w/∂y│(sub)w and ∂p/∂z│(sub)w) with two wall actuations (${\Phi}$$_2$and ${\Phi}$$_3$). To test the suboptimal control, direct numerical simulations of turbulent channel flow at Re(sub)$\tau$=100 are performed in a spectral domain. It is found that the effect of A and $\Delta$t(sub)a(sup)+∼1. The near-wall behaviors of flow structure are analyzed to characterize the drag reduction. The size effect of the sensor/actuator is examined.

  • The high speed machining center(HMC) has been widely applied to manufacture a die and trial product in many machine industry. Because the evaluation fer the HMC is not sufficiently performed and the efficient cutting conditions aren't selected, a great loss has been caused in the cost aspect. In this study, the need of preliminary running time and unstable spindle speed is presented from the analysis of acceleration in idling. The Machinability fur the TiAlN coated flat end mill and STD11( $H_{R}$C60) is evaluated from the trends of tool wear and cutting force according to cutting conditions and slenderness ratio and a low response of tool dynamometer in high speed is proved. The resonance spindle speed is identified through the tool wear and natural frequency test.t.

  • Sediment is a useful natural source but deteriorated continually by anthropogenic and industrial sources. Therefore, it is imperative to search a suitable method for improving or restoring sediment quality. Sediment has been tested to identify the effects of some external agents on a polluted area for 28 days. Chemical analysis and total viable counts (TVC) test have been conducted for 4 days interval to assess their performance. The analyses of chemical oxygen demand (COD), acid volatile sulfide (AVS), total phosphorous (T-P), total nitrogen (T-N) indicate that the chemical agents was more efficient to improve sediment quality whereas the microbial agent was more efficient for nutrient releasing from sediment. Oxygen releasing property of the chemical agent was thought to be providing with more congenial environment for the higher growth of the bacterial community than the direct application of microbial agents.

  • This paper describes a development of Collision/grounding Strength Assessment System (COSAS) using simplified method. This method is formulated in closed-form equation by taking into account crushing caused by bulbous bow collision and cutting caused by forward speed grounding. To verify the accuracy of the developed system, some examples for test models of double side/bottom structure in collision/grounding situation are considered. This system might be useful for analysis of structural damage of oil tankers in collision/grounding.

  • The purpose of this study were to investigate a preference and demand performance of UV protective hat for outdoor sports activities. Data collected from 259 adults from survey were analyzed by frequence analysis, crosstabs, t-test, and ANOVA using SPSS 17.0. The results are as follows. A demand performanc of UV protective hats were a demand performance for designs, colors, fabrics, lightness, UV protection, and easy care. It showed that the respondents worn the hats for skin health and didn't wear for sun block. The demand performance of UV protective hat showed difference according to gender and age. The favorite type of UV protective hat was cap, and there was no difference between young and old age. Male preferred the cap styles, while female preferred the wide brim styles for UV protection. The preferred fiber contents of the respondents were cotton and functional fiber.

  • This study is about the effect of braiding on the 2-D biaxial braided hollow composite(BD) compared with unidirectional hollow composite(UD). The specimens were made of T700S Carbon/Epoxy prepreg and T700S dried Carbon yarns. Fiber volume fraction of UD and BD was obtained experimentally and analytically. Fiber volume fraction of BD was derived based on unit cell of braiding yarn section. Bending test was executed to investigate the effect of braiding part. The result of experiment and analysis of fiber volume fraction has good agreement. Bending strength of BD is about 20% higher than that of UD.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop online health promotion an education program for university students and to evaluate its changes. Method: An online health promotion education program was established through analysis, designing, development, implementation and evaluation stages. This was a quasi-experimental, one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of this study were 97 students in one university, and they were provided the online class for 16 weeks. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and paired t-test. Result: The results of program evaluation were positive, which included instruction function 3.94, system construction 4.14, system function 3.90, and overall evaluation 4.03 on the scale of 5. The posttest scores of health promoting lifestyle(t=-2.316, p=0.024) was significantly higher than those of the pretest. Conclusion: This study shows that the online health promotion education program was an effective educational method to improve health promotion lifestyle for the university students.

  • This paper provides Bayesian methodology to estimate the reliability for guided weapons which are not continuously operating. The posterior distribution of subsystems and components becomes the next prior distribution. By analyzing the results of the sub-systems and components presented a method for estimating the reliability of the entire guided weapons. Bayesian methodology using existing test data of subsystems may be used to reduce the sample sizes.

  • In the cluster analysis, Hotelling's $T^2$ can be used to estimate the unknown number of clusters based on the idea of multiple comparison procedure. Especially, its threshold is obtained according to the probability of committing the type one error. Examples are used to compare Hotelling's $T^2$ with other classical location test statistics such as Sum-of-Squared Error and Wilks' $\Lambda$ The hierarchical clustering is used to reveal the underlying structure of the data. Also related criteria are reviewed in view of both the between variance and the within variance.
