Dual effects of ram pressure on star formation in multiphase disk galaxies with strong stellar feedback

  • We investigate the impact of ram pressure stripping due to the intracluster medium (ICM) on star-forming disk galaxies with a multiphase interstellar medium maintained by strong stellar feedback. We carry out radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of an isolated disk galaxy embedded in a 1011 M⦿ dark matter halo with various ICM winds mimicking the cluster outskirts (moderate) and the central environment (strong). We find that both star formation quenching and triggering occur in ram pressure-stripped galaxies, depending on the strength of the winds. HI and H2 in the outer galactic disk are significantly stripped in the presence of moderate winds, whereas turbulent pressure provides support against ram pressure in the central region, where star formation is active. Moderate ICM winds facilitate gas collapse, increasing the total star formation rates by ~40% when the wind is oriented face-on or by ~80% when it is edge-on. In contrast, strong winds rapidly blow away neutral and molecular hydrogen gas from the galaxy, suppressing star formation by a factor of 2 within ~200 Myr. Dense gas clumps with nH≳10 M⦿ pc-2 are easily identified in extraplanar regions, but no significant young stellar populations are found in such clumps. In our attempts to enhance radiative cooling by adopting a colder ICM of T=106K only a few additional stars are formed in the tail region, even if the amount of newly cooled gas increases by an order of magnitude.

제주도 서식 비단털쥐(Tscherskia triton)의 번식과 발달 (Breeding and Development of the Tscherskia triton in Jeju Island)

  • 중국 북부와 한국, 러시아 지역에 서식하는 비단털쥐(Tscherskia triton)의 분포를 제외한 생활사, 행동, 생태와 관련된 생물학적 특징에 대해서는 거의 연구된 바 없다. 이에 본 연구는 제주도에서 포획된 개체(n=9)를 대상으로 종 단위 연구의 기본이 되는 번식과 성장 및 발달에 대한 생물학적 정보를 밝히기 위하여 2015년 3월부터 2016년 12월까지 사육실에서 진행되었다. 연구결과, 임신률은 31.7%였고 좁은 케이지에서 보다 넓은 케이지에서 더 높게 나타났다(56.7 vs. 6.7%). 임신기간은 $22{\pm}1.6$일(범위 21-27일), 한배의 산자수(litter size)는 $4.26{\pm}1.37$마리(범위 2-7 마리)였다. 최소이유시기는 $19.2{\pm}1.4$일(범위 18-21일)이었다. 출생 직후 새끼의 체중과 외부형태의 크기는 성별로 차이가 없었으나, 이유시기부터 암수의 머리와 몸통길이(HBL)와 꼬리길이(TL)는 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다(HBL-weaning, $106.50{\pm}6.02$ vs. $113.34{\pm}4.72mm$, p<0.05; HBL-4 months, $163.93{\pm}5.42$ vs. $182.83{\pm}4.32mm$, p<0.05; TL-4 months, $107.23{\pm}3.25$ vs. $93.95{\pm}2.15mm$, p<0.05). Gompertz 모형과 logistic 모형을 적용하였을 때, 머리-몸통길이에서는 수컷이 암컷보다 최대 성숙 길이가 길었고($164.840{\pm}7.453$ vs. $182.830{\pm}4.319mm$, p<0.0001; $163.936{\pm}5.415$ vs. $182.840{\pm}4.333mm$, p<0.0001), 성장률도 빨랐으나($1.351{\pm}0.065$ vs. $1.435{\pm}0.085$, p<0.05; $2.870{\pm}0.253$ vs. $3.211{\pm}0.635$, p<0.05), 성장곡선의 기울기가 최대가 되는 일령은 암컷보다 조금 늦었다($5.121{\pm}0.318$ vs. $5.520{\pm}0.333$, p<0.05; $6.884{\pm}0.336$ vs. $7.503{\pm}0.453$, p<0.05). 한편 꼬리의 최대길이($105.695{\pm}5.938$ vs. $94.150{\pm}2.507mm$, p<0.001; $111.609{\pm}14.881$ vs. $93.960{\pm}2.150mm$, p<0.05)와 변곡점에서의 길이($60.306{\pm}1.992$ vs. $67.859{\pm}1.330mm$, p<0.0001; $55.714{\pm}7.458$ vs. $46.975{\pm}1.074mm$, p<0.05)는 암컷이 수컷보다 긴 것으로 나타났다. 두 성장모형에서 암수의 체중과 외부형태형질에 대한 성장률은 비교 결과 유사하였다. 이러한 결과는 비단털쥐의 종적 특징을 밝히는데 필요한 자료로 이용될 것이다.

흰쥐 광 혈전 뇌경색 모델에서 줄기세포 추적을 위한 자화강조영상 (Susceptibility Weighted Image for Stem Cell Tracking in Rat Photothrombotic Infarction)

  • 사람 중간엽 줄기세포(hMSCs)를 초상자성산화철(SPIO)로 표지하여, 체외에서 세포 농도에 따른 신호의 변화를 알아보고, 흰쥐 광 혈전 뇌경색 모델에 이식하여 자기공명영상 기법 중, T2강조영상과 $T2^*$강조영상 그리고 자화강조영상의 줄기세포 검출능을 분석하고, 병리 소견과 비교하고자 하였다. 체외실험은 SPIO(Feridex I.V.$^{(R)}$)로 표지한 줄기세포 $1.56{\times}10^4$, $3.13{\times}10^4$, $6.25{\times}10^4$, $1.25{\times}10^5$, $2.5{\times}10^5$, $5{\times}10^5$ 개/$m{\ell}$, SPIO로 표지 하지 않은 $5{\times}10^5$ 개/$m{\ell}$의 세포를 Control로 준비하여 $0.5m{\ell}$튜브에 담아 T2WI, $T2^*WI$, SWI sequence로 자기공명영상을 얻었다. 체내실험은 8마리의 흰쥐를 대상으로 정수리점(bregma)에서 우측으로 2.5mm, 뒤쪽으로 2.5mm 부위에 광 혈전 뇌경색을 만들고, SPIO-hMSC $2.5{\times}10^5$ 개/$m{\ell}$, $1m{\ell}$을 꼬리 정맥에 주입하여 실험하였다. 자기공명영상은 주입 전과 주입 후 1, 3, 7 그리고, 14일째 T2WI, $T2^*$WI, SWI 영상을 얻고 정량적으로 평가하였다. 자기공명영상검사 후 흰쥐는 조직검사를 위해 희생시켰다. 체외실험 결과 CNR은 SWI, $T2^*WI$, T2WI 순으로의 높게 나왔고, 세포 농도에 따라서는 $2.5{\times}10^5$ 개/$m{\ell}$의 농도에서 가장 높게 나왔다. 체내실험에서 normal, infarction, SPIO 상호간의 CNR을 분석해본 결과 normal-infarction의 CNR은 T2WI가 가장 높게 나왔고, normal-SPIO 그리고 infarction-SPIO에서 CNR은 SWI, $T2^*WI$, T2WI순으로 나왔다. 따라서 흰쥐를 이용한 실험에서 T2WI sequence는 infarction을 잘 표현해 주고, SWI는 SPIO로 표지한 줄기세포를 normal과 infarction으로 부터 잘 구별해 주었다. 현재 임상에서 SWI는 출혈, 석회화 병변등을 쉽게 찾아내는 sequence로 사용 되고 있지만 향후에 줄기세포 치료가 인간의 질병을 치료하는 주요방안으로 자리 잡을 때에도 이식된 줄기 세포를 관찰 할 수 있는 좋은 도구가 될 것으로 기대 된다.

물속 휘발성 유기화합물이 염색체 돌연변이에 미치는 영향 (Genotoxic Effects of Volatile Organic Compounds in Water)

  • For determination of the genotoxicity of VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) in water, in vitro Comet assay was performed using 3T3 cells. The selected 5 VOCs; Trichloroethylene(TCE), Tetrachloroethylene(PCE), Carbontetrachloride (CteC), Dichloromethane(DCM) and Chlorofrom(Chl) and mixed solvent(Mix), are the test items for drinking water quality. Author analyzed the genotoxicity of these solvents through their tail length (TL) values. Mix, PCE, Chl, TCE in order had cytotoxicity at the highest concentration, and CCl₄ and DCM had no cytotoxic effect. TCE, CCl₄, Chl, PCE, Mix, DCM had genotoxicity, Chl, PCE, Mix had both cytotoxicity and genotoxicity simultaneously, Cytotoxic effect of mixed organic solvents, compared with that of single component, at each concentration, was influenced by the synergistic effect of the interaction of each organic component.

Interleukin-9 Inhibits Lung Metastasis of Melanoma through Stimulating Anti-Tumor M1 Macrophages

  • Interleukin-9 (IL-9) is well known for its role in allergic inflammation. For cancer, both pro- and anti-tumor effects of IL-9 were controversially reported, but the impact of IL-9 on tumor metastasis has not yet been clarified. In this study, IL-9 was expressed as a secretory form (sIL-9) and a membrane-bound form (mbIL-9) on B16F10 melanoma cells. The mbIL-9 was engineered as a chimeric protein with the transmembrane and cytoplasmic region of TNF-α. The effect of either mbIL-9 or sIL-9 expressing cells were analyzed on the metastasis capability of the cancer cells. After three weeks of tumor implantation into C57BL/6 mice through the tail vein, the number of tumor modules in lungs injected with IL-9 expressing B16F10 was 5-fold less than that of control groups. The percentages of CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, NK cells, and M1 macrophages considerably increased in the lungs of the mice injected with IL-9 expressing cells. Among them, the M1 macrophage subset was the most significantly enhanced. Furthermore, peritoneal macrophages, which were stimulated with either sIL-9 or mbIL-9 expressing transfectant, exerted higher anti-tumor cytotoxicity compared with that of the mock control. The IL-9-stimulated peritoneal macrophages were highly polarized to M1 phenotype. Stimulation of RAW264.7 macrophages with sIL-9 or mbIL-9 expressing cells also significantly increased the cytotoxicity of those macrophages against wild-type B16F10 cells. These results clearly demonstrate that IL-9 can induce an anti-metastasis effect by enhancing the polarization and proliferation of M1 macrophages.

김치생산용 알타리무 전처리가공시스템 개발 (IV) - 시작기의 자동화와 평가 - (Development of the Altari Radish Pre-Processing System for Kimchi Production (IV) - Automation and Evaluation of the Prototype Machine -)

  • An Altari radish pre-processing system, which feasible to process automatically such operations as leaf and root tail cutting and root peeling, for kimchi production was accomplished based on the foregone serial studies. In this study, the performances of the developed prototype machine, considered as a commercializing level, were analyzed and evaluated. The prototype machine attached Tiny PLC automatic control system was performed the sequent function as the rate of successful peeling was more than 98% for the Altari radish less than 70 mm diameter of a radish. The operating efficiency of this was 9 see/each, 128 kg/h, and it means as much as $5{\sim}6$ times that of a woman labor's. The sanitation and taste of the mechanized-processed Altari radish kimchi was almost same as that of the handmade. And they were suitable for manufactory of kimchi as the both short term ripening and storing kimchi. Developed machinery with one peeling device and two peeling devices that compared with hand processing, it was analyzed that the break-even yearly working days were 28 days and 19 days, and the break-even yearly processing amount were 28,700 kg, 32,400 kg, respectively.

MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF INNER MAGNETOSPHERE DURING GEOMAGNETIC STORMS INFERRED FROM A TSYGANENKO MAGNETIC FIELD MODEL

  • In this paper we report some properties of inner magnetospheric structure inferred from the T01_s code, one of the latest magnetospheric models by Tsyganenko. We have constructed three average storms representing moderate, strong, and severe intensity storms using 95 actual storms. The three storms are then modelled by the T01_s code to examine differences in magnetic structure among them. We find that the magnetic structure of intense storms is strikingly different from the normal structure. First, when the storm intensity is large, the field lines anchored at dayside longitudinal sectors become warped tailward to align to the solar wind direction. This is particularly so for the field lines anchored at the longitudinal sectors from postnoon through dusk. Also while for the moderate storm the equatorial magnetic field near geosynchronous altitude is found to be weakest near midnight sector, this depression region expands into even late afternoon sector during the severe storm. Accordingly the field line curvature radius at the equator in the premidnight geosynchronous region becomes unusually small, reaching down to a value less than 500 km. We attribute this strong depression and the dawn-dusk asymmetry to the combined effect from the enhanced tail current and the westward expansion/rotation of the partial ring current.

PTMSP-PEI와 PDMS-PEI 복합막에 의한 수소/질소 혼합기체 분리 (Separation of $H_2$/$N_2$ Gas Mixture by PTMSP-PEI and PDMS-PEI Composite Membranes)

  • PTMSP-PEI와 PDMS-PEI 복합막을 제조하고, 막의 특성을 FT-IR, $^1H-NMR,$ DSC, TGA, GPC, SEM을 사용하여 조사하였다. 제조된 PTMSP의 수평균분자량 (equation omitted)은 477,920 이었고, 중량평균분자량 (equation omitted)은 673,329이었고, 유리전이온도 ($T_g$)는 $224^{\circ}C$이었다. 제조된 고분자 복합막들에 의한 $H_2/N_2$ 혼합기체분리는 $25^{\circ}C$에서 압력의 변화에 따라 조사되었다. PTMSP-PEI와 PDMS-PEI 복합막들의 수소에 대한 분리인자 (${\alpha}, {\beta},$ equation omitted)값은 투과셀의 압력이 증가하면 증가하였다. PTMSP-PEI 복합막의 수소에 대한 (${\alpha}, {\beta},$ equation omitted 값은 ${\Delta}P$ 30psi 와 $25^{\circ}C$에서 2.28, 1.17, 1.96이었고, PDMS-PEI 복합막의 (${\alpha}, {\beta}$ equation omitted 값은 3.70, 1.53, 2.42 이었다.

Magnetic Resonance Image Manifestations of the Atypical Meningioma

  • Through retrospective analysis of 13 cases of magnetic resonance image (MRI) manifestations of atypical meningiomas confirmed by operation and pathology in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University, the objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of MRI in order to improve the accuracy rate of preoperative diagnosis. In this retrospective analysis of MRI findings for atypical meningiomas in First Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University from January to July in 2012, the location, morphology and tumor signals and other tumor imaging characteristics were covered. In 13 cases of atypical meningioma patients of this group, most tumors were located at typical sites (10/13), mainly the falx cerebri, parasagittal, convexity, saddle area. Only two cases were at atypical locations, 1 in the cerebellar hemisphere and 1 in a lateral ventricle. Most of the tumors showed T1 and T2 isointensity signals, and necrosis, calcification, and peritumoral edema were always featured. DWI showed isointensity in 11 cases (11/13), and hyperintensity in 2. Some 9 cases had dural tail signs, 12 had accurate positioning (12/13), and 2 were postoperative recurrences. MRI has high value in the diagnosis of atypical meningiomas, with important roles in early clinical diagnosis, treatment and prognosis evaluation.

Tail model의 기계적 이질통에 대한 전침 자극의 효과 및 교감신경계의 관여기전 (The Effects of Electroacupuncture on Mechanical Allodynia and Its Involvement with the Sympathetic Nervous System)

  • Objective : This study was intended to investigate the analgesic effects of electroacupuncture(EA) on mechanical allodynia according to the frequency and intensity of EA. Also to know if mechanical allodynia and the analgesic effects of EA is related to the sympathetci nervous system and/or the purinergic system. Methods : mechanical allodynia-induced rats were produced by resecting S1-S2 nerve. The zusanli(ST36) was used for acupoint and the rats were divided into 4 groups. Each group was given different stimuli[low frequency low intensity-EA(LFLI-EA), low frequency high intensity-EA(LFHI-EA), high frequency low intensity-EA(LFHI-EA), high frequency high intensity-EA(HFHI-EA)]. Futhermore, to make sympathectomy6-OHDA and phentolamine were administered intraperitonially and the concentration of norepinephrine(NE) were measured. As a ATP blocker, suramin was applied for this study. Results : Comparing to control group, each of the 4 groups(LFLI-EA, LFHI-EA, HFLI-EA, HFHI-EA) showed a significant reduction of response frequency of mechanical allodynia. LFHI-EA was more effective than that of LFLI-EA. The LFHI-EA group also had longer lasting effects from the stimulation than the other groups. Sympathectomy didn't show any reduction of response frequency of mechanical allodynia.(Each n=6, n=4). Nor did both sympathectomy and ATP block. The response frequency wasn't reduced by sympathectomy or by sympathectomy and ATP block, but was significantly reduced with LFHI-EA Conclusions : These results suggest that EA has a significant analgesic effect on mechanical allodynia which has no connection with NE and/or ATP.
