The two major tannins were separated by Sephadex LH-20 and MCI-gel CHP-20 from peel of astringent persimmon fruits. Purified tannins were identified to (+)-catechin and (+)-gallocatechin by NMR, IR spectrum and FAB-mass spectrum. The removal rate of turbidity, T-N, T-P and CODcr in wastewater with lime and (+)-gallocatechin was higher than those of (+)-catechin because (+)-gallocatechin has more hydroxyl groups. As increasing concentration of tannins from peel of astringent persimmon fruits, the removal rate of turbidity, T-N, T-P and CODcr were increased. Synergistic activity by mixed tannins(catechin+gallocatechin) was also observed.
This paper is to develop the process suitable for the advanced treatment of liquid fertilizer from the livestock night soil treatment facility (biogas plant). Nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) process was used, respectively, for the advanced treatment of liquid fertilizer. And membrane bioreactor (MBR) with and without biomedia were tested, respectively, for the pretreatment. It was found that almost T-N of the liquid fertilizer was composed of ammoniacal nitrogen. Transmembrane pressure of MBR with biomedia increased slowly during the operation time, while that of MBR without biomedia increased rapidly at the initial time. But there was no difference observed in the removal efficiencies of COD, T-N, and T-P irrespective of the dosage of biomedia. When the liquid fertilizer was pretreated by MBR with biomedia, the removal efficiencies of COD, T-N, and T-P were 99.8, 86.5%, and 99.8% by NF, and 99.9, 86.8%, and 99.8% by RO, respectively. Compared with the effluent quality standards of the livestock night soil treatment facility, the water quality treated by MBR and NF/RO process met the standard for COD and T-P, but exceeded the permitted standard for T-N. In order to meet the effluent quality standard for T-N, it is necessary to change the MBR operation cycle or to add the secondary treatment by NF/RO.
BACC(Biological Activated Carbon Cartridge)process is a newly developed biological process to remove organic compounds, nitrogen, and phosphorus with activated carbon granules in iron fixed-frame cartridge type. The largest defect of previous BACC process was denitrification inefficiency. The removal efficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorous with external recycle ratios $100{\sim}200%$ for synthetic wastewater were $69.8{\sim}90.1%$ and $62.18{\sim}91%$, respectively, since the modified BACC process with external recycle overcame the defect of BACC process. When external recycle ratio was increased more than 300%, T-N removal efficiencies were decreased. In the treatment of a real sewage using modified BACC process, $COD_{Cr}$, removal efficiencies were $96.3{\sim}97.5%$ which was similar to those of the previous BACC process. while T-N removal efficiencies was $88.3{\sim}95.7%$ which were superior to those of the previous BACC process.

An evaluation of the organic matter removal efficiency showed high removal efficiencies of 91.1~96.3% and 91.4~97.5% for TCODcr and TBOD5, respectively, for 9hr or longer of HRT. However, the removal efficiencies decreased to 86.9~90.5% and 88.0~90.9%, respectively for 6hr of HRT. $NH_3$-N showed a high removal efficiency of 95% or higher for 9hr or longer of HRT. The total nitrogen removal efficiency was 67.6~76.7% for 9~12hr of HRT, and it decreased to 50% for 6hr of HRT, which seems to be due to the insufficient carbon source required for denitrification. The T-P removal efficiency was 32% on average. To comply with the legal standards, a chemical phosphorus removal process is needed after the reactor.

The treatment efficiency of rotating biological contactors (RBCs) for the high strength of dairy wastewater was investigated. Two different systems were conducted composing of a single RBC with tapered aeration reactors for the system A and a sequential RBCs following tapered aeration reactors for the system B. Experiments using dairy wastewater were conducted for 50 days period of time, in which hydraulic rates were maintained at the constant ratios of 346L per day and variable BOD concentrations were at the range from 1,358mg/L to 829mg/L, the $COD_{cr}$, concentration of the range were from 2,384mg/L to 1,329mg/L, the range of T-N concentrations was from 66mg/L to 38mg/L, and 50% of internal recycle and 50% of sludge return were performed. Results indicated that the removal efficiencies of the system B were higher than those of the system A. The removal efficiencies of system A for the BOD, $COD_{cr}$, T-N and T-P were 97.8%, 96.7%, 87.2% and 82%, respectively. The removal efficiencies of system B for the BOD, $COD_{cr}$, T-N and T-P were as of 98.5%, 98.5%, 91.3% and 89%.
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have become an increasing concern in terms of human health risks as well as aesthetic impairment due to their toxicity. The reduction of water pollutants, especially nutrients from non-point sources in a reservoir watershed, is fundamental for HABs prevention. We investigated the pollutant removal efficiencies of a constructed wetland to evaluate its feasibility as a method for controlling non-point sources located in the Annaecheon stream within the Daecheong Reservoir watershed. The overall removal efficiencies of pollutants were as follows: BOD 14.3%, COD 17.9%, SS 50.0%, T-N 19.0%, and T-P 35.4%. These results indicate that constructed wetlands are effective in controlling pollutants from non-point sources. The seasonal variation in removal efficiency depended on the specific pollutants. The removal efficiencies of BOD, COD, and T-N were stable throughout the year, except during winter, which might have been influenced by lower microorganism activity. In contrast, T-P showed a consistent removal efficiency even during the winter season, suggesting that the wetland can reduce external phosphorus loading to the reservoir. Regarding the effects of pollutant loadings on removal efficiency, the effluent concentrations of all pollutants were significantly decreased compared to those in the influent in case of middle and high loadings. This demonstrates that constructed wetlands can handle high pollutant loads, including the initial runoff during rainfall, to prevent reservoir eutrophication. Despite the various strengths of wetland water purification, there are limitations as passive treatment. Therefore, more case studies should be conducted to suggest optimum operational conditions for constructed wetlands, taking into consideration reservoir-specific characteristics.
In the advanced treatment of sewage using the submerged membrane-coupled sequencing batch reactor (SMSBR) with media, the effect of media on the filtration performance and removal efficiency were investigated. Dosages of the media in the SMSBR were 10% based on working volume of reactor. As a control system, SMSBR without media and PAC, SMSBR with PAC (10 g/L) only, and SMSBR with media and PAC were also operated. The experimental results showed that there was no big difference observed in the removal efficiencies of COD, T-N, and T-P irrespective of the dosages of the media and PAC. But transmembrane pressure (TMP) of SMSBR with media increased slowly during the operation time, while that of SMSBR without media increased rapidly. Using SMSBR with media, it was possible to operate without the membrane cleaning during the 91 days. Using SMSBR with media only, after 80 days the average removal efficiencies of COD, T-N, and T-P were 95.0, 69.3%, and 51.4%, respectively.

Biological nutrient removal(BNR) process used in this study, which was packed with EPS(expanded polystylene) media, has more many advantages in aspect of reducing hydraulic retention time(HRT) of the process and having less effect of temperature in the winter season than commercial process in the present. Bench-scale study was performed using domestic wastewater. In the results, it was observed that the T-N removal efficiencies in HRT 6 hr and HRT 4 hr were 55% and 51%, respectively, showing the small reduction (about 4%) of T-N removal efficiency according to shortening of HRT. In comparison of T-N removal characteristic in summer and winter seasons, it showed that T-N removal efficiencies in summer and winter seasons were 65% and 54%, respectively, showing the 11% lower T-N removal efficiency in winter season than in summer season due to deterioration of nitrification in winter season. In the studies of influent loading rate and C/N ratio, the process showed stable effluent quality under the condition of broad influent loading rate and C/N ratio. Therefore, it is anticipated that the developed process in this study could be applicable to small wastewater treatment plant in nutrient removal.
The SR 95531, a GABA antagonist was microinjected into either the pretectum nuclei (nucleus Superficialis Synencephali nSS) or the nBOR (nucleus Ectomammilaris nEM) of chickens. Monocular optokinetic nystagmus (01(N) was reorded by the search coil technique before and after unilateral intracerebral drug administration. Unilateral microinjections of SR 95531 into either the nSS or nEM induce a reversible increase of gain in OKN directed by contralateral eye for both directions of stimulation. The administration into the nSS increased directional asymmetry by increasing the T~ component velocity gain more strongly than the N-T component velocity gain. On the other hand, the unilateral administration of the drug into the nEM suppressed the diretional O1(N asymmetry by increasing the N-T component velocity gain more strongly than the T-N component velocity gain. The nSS seems especially involved in monocular OKN in response to a T-N stimulation, while the nEM seems more involved in the OKN response to N-T stimulation. These results indicate that the drug suppresses GABAergic inhibition at the mesencephalic level. The increase in gain of OKN directed by the ipsilateral eye to microinjeded nuclei could account for the strong interactions existing between these two mesencephalic structures responsible for horizontal OKN.

This study is performed to examine the removal efficiency of organic materials,$NH_4-N$ and P in Swine-Wastewater Treatment using Hybrid-process. It named SBR process, Hybrid-process as RunI(SBR), and Run II(Struvite Tank-SBR), and compared the removal efficiency of each Run. The removal efficiency of the organic materials in each Run is like this; In Run I, TS, VS and COD was 43%, 39%, and 70%, respectively. And in Run II, TS VS, and COD was 52%, 52%, and 82%, respectively. It shows that the removal efficiency of Run II using Strutive Tank is higher. And as for the removal efficiency of $NH_4-N$ and T-P in each Run, Run II using Strutive Tank was 90% and 57%, higher than 56% and 49% of RunI. Especially for $NH_4-N$, Run II showed much higher efficiency, and this proved that Strutive Tank was very efficient process of all for the removal of N and P. As a result of this study, Hybrid-process that combines Strutive Tank and SBR is proved to be a very good process in Swine Wastewater Treatment.
