Implementation of FFT on Massively Parallel GPU for DVB-T Receiver (DVB-T 수신기를 위한 대규모 병렬처리 GPU 기반의 FFT 구현)

  • Recently various research have been conducted relating to the implementation of signal processing or communication system by software using the massively parallel processing capability of the GPU. In this work, we focus on reducing software simulation time of 2K/8K FFT in DVB-T by using GPU. we estimate the processing time of the DVB-T system, which is one of the standards for DTV transmission, by CPU. Then we implement the FFT processing by the software using the NVIDIA's massively parallel GPU processor. In this paper we apply stream process method to reduce the overhead for data transfer between CPU and GPU, coalescing method to reduce the global memory access time and data structure design method to maximize the shared memory usage. The results show that our proposed method is approximately 20~30 times as fast as the CPU based FFT processor, and approximately 1.8 times as fast as the CUFFT library (version 2.1) which is provided by the NVIDIA when applied to the DVB-T 2K/8K mode FFT.

  • In Korea, Eureka-147 DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) temporarily decided as the standard system for digital audio broadcasting was evolved into DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) to complement the technical vulnerability in mobile reception of terrestrial DTV. According to introducing video service in T-DMB (Terrestrial DMB), 'Terrestrial DMB Experimental Broadcasting for Video Service', a national project of the MIC (Ministry of Information and Communication), was done for verifying the possibility of video service via T-DMB. The main objective of the project is computing the effective field strength and coverage for making a plan to build T-DMB broadcasting network and developing transmitting and receiving equipment. In case of digital broadcasting, it is absolutely essential to measure BER (Bit Error Rate) and electric field strength in order to evaluate coverage and quality of received signal. In this paper, we implement an integrated mobile measurement system for T-DMB. For this purpose, we propose efficient data structure and algorithm for BER measurement. By adding GPS (Global Positioning System) and electric field strength measurement parts into BER measurement part, we complete the integrated mobile measurement system, and then verify it by experiments and field tests. The developed system was used in a national project, 'Terrestrial DMB Experimental Broadcasting for Video Service' and measurement results will be used as fundamental data for building T-DMB broadcasting network.

System-Level Performance of Spread Spectrum-Based Add-on Service Overlaid onto the Existing Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcast Band

  • We consider an overlaid broadcast service, where a spread spectrum (SS)-based broadcast signal is overlaid onto the existing terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) band. The system is similar to the augmented data transmission in the ATSC DTV, for which it was investigated mostly in terms of link level performance, such as bit error rate. Our focus in this paper is on the system-level performances. More specifically, utilizing both a large scale path loss and a small scale fading channel model, the primary objective is to explore the tradeoff between the coverage and the achievable rate of the overlaid service and, finally, to determine the achievable rate in the overlaid service for marginal coverage reduction in the existing broadcast service. The analytical and simulation results show that an SS-based add-on service of 10 kbps to 20 kbps can co-exist with the T-DMB service while resulting in only a marginal degradation in T-DMB coverage (for example, less than one percent reduction).

  • In this paper, we suggested new additional data transmission technology for T-DMB system using MOK-SS(Mary Orthogonal Keying- Spread Spectrum)mapping method. We applied revised watermarking method of TxID(Transmitter Identification) technology mainly had been used for conventional ATSC-DTV(Advanced Television Systems Committee - Digital TV). And proposed schemes enhanced additional data rate using MOK-SS mapping method. We certified availability of our proposed technology by using various simulation and error rate performance analysis.

  • In this paper, 4K-UHDTV or 8K-UHDTV and UHD-3DTV that the next generation broadcasting implementation and the possibility of direct receiving environment construction is analyzed on the terrestrial broadcasting. Particularly, we investigated the possibility by analyzing the previous and related works with regard to UHDTV transmission by DVB-T2 that is one of the best commercialized transmission mode. In order that the UHDTV broadcasting succeeds once again after completion of digital terrestrial switch over at the end of 2012, the ultra high resolution image transfer is important. However, the direct, the indoor and ubiquitous receiving environment is important in not only TV but also the personal type multimedia terminal in the sense of UHDTV service penetration. Therefore, in this paper, by using SFN and high error-correcting mode in DVB-T2 standard, the efficient frequency utilization and effective reception environment construction is illustrated. Particularly, SFN network constitution by 2 mutually different frequencies including the VHF bandwidth and UHF band, and etc. is shown. And the method that builds the free wireless receive environment by using SFN low power radio repeater and for home use gap filler is proposed. And the effect and frequency amount required are presented, when UHDTV broadcasting use 10MHz bandwidth.

  • Rapid advancement information and communication technologies has introduced various dimension of e-Learning environment such as u-learning(ubiquitous learning), m-learning(mobile learning) and t-learning(television learning). These technologies enabled learners to access learning contents through variety of devices with more flexibility and consistency. In order to implement learning through these multiple environments, basically it is necessary to acquire and process the platform information that contains properties and status of the web-accessing devices. In this study, we introduce the design and implementation of a Platform Analyzer Model which is essential for learning systems that support multi-platform environment. We also present a Interactive DTV-Centered multi-platform learning environment framework using PC, PDA or Mobile phone. Finally, we will discuss the possibility of the multi-platform learning environment with sample scenario and contents.

지상파 DTV 현장비교시험 결과

  • 미국 지상파방송방식 ATSC의 전송방식(8-VSB)과 유럽지상파방송방식 DVB-T의 전송방식(COFDM)에 대한 현장비교시험이 서울을 비롯한 수도권 일원에서 2001년 9월 18일부터 2001년 11월 28일까지 약 3개월에 걸쳐 실시되었다. 이 시험에서는 도심지, 방사선, 원거리, 계층변조, 실내수신, 이동수신 등 6가지 유형에 대해 측정이 수행되었다. 측정결과, 유럽식이 미국식에 비해 모든 측정유형에서 우수한 성능을 보였다. 산악이 많고 도시에 건물이 밀집되어 다중경로간섭의 영향이 큰 한국의 환경에서는 유럽식이 더 적합한 방식임이 이 시험을 통해 입증되었고, 특히 이동수신의 경우 미국식은 거의 수신이 불가능한데 비해 유럽식은 표준화질에서 95%이상, 상당히 높은 고화질에서 70%이상의 수신율을 보여 미래의 새로운 서비스에 대한 적응성에서도 유럽식이 우수한 것으로 평가되었다.

  • In this paper, we designed FFT for European DTV and implemented system with Stratix EP1S25F672C6 FPGA At the implemented FFT, we used SIC architecture. SIC architecture is composed of algorithm-specific processing element, RAM memory, registers, and a central or distributed control unit. Designed FFT was acceptable either 2K or 8K point FFT processing, and is selectable guard interval such as 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32. Consequently, it was suitable for the standard of DVB-T(Digital Terrestrial Video Transmission System) specification. It resulted in 12% of total logic gate and 53% of total memory bit in Stratix device.

Channel Estimation for Scattered Pilot Based OFDM Systems (분산 파일럿 기반의 OFDM 시스템의 채널 추정)

  • The scattered pilots employed in DVB-T take advantage of the merits of both the block type and comb type pilot arrangement to increase the transmission efficiency. To estimate the channel transfer functions for data subcarriers, it is required to conduct time-frequency domain 2D estimation using the pilots. Though 2D Wiener estimator is optimal in sense of MSE (mean square error), it is too complex to implement in hardware. In this paper a new channel estimation method for the scattered pilot based OFDM system by measuring the power of AWGN and removing the noise in the LS (least square) estimate of the channel is proposed. And the simulation results reveal the proposed method outperforms the 2D linear interpolation in the fading channel.

  • 콘텐츠 산업은 디지털 기술의 발달로 콘텐츠 속성이 아날로그에서 디지털 융복화로 변화되고 있으며, IPTV, DMB, WiBro, 3DTV 등과 같은 뉴미디어를 통해 융복합 서비스로 제공되고 있다. 또한 디지털콘텐츠 산업의 영역은 과거 엔터테인먼트 위주에서 미래에는 제조, 서비스를 포함한 산업 전영역에 체화 및 융합되어 산업의 경계를 초월할 것으로 전망된다. 이러한 콘텐츠 산업에 있어서의 융합 현상은 산업간 경계약화, 기술의 발달 및 고객수요의 다양화 등에 의해 빠르게 확산중에 있으며, 특히 문화기술(CT)의 진보가 근본적으로 콘텐츠 산업에서의 융합을 가속화시키고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 콘텐츠 산업에서의 융합 유형을 4가지(강화, 확장, 결합, 창조)로 구분하여 주요 사례들을 살펴보고, 미래 콘텐츠 산업의 트렌드를 전망해 봄으로써 융합형 콘텐츠 산업의 육성 및 발전을 위한 정책을 수립하고 시행하는 데 기여하고자 한다.
