  • The design process must be planned carefully and executed systematically in order to support designers who are faced with many engineering design problems. In particular, conceptual design stage is very important than other stages such as detailed design or manufacturing stage on designing engineering systems. When designers are faced contradictory situation in task, conceptual design usually requires inventive thinking which depends on their creativity. And in order to develop good concepts, it is necessary to resolve contradictory situations during conceptual design. This paper presents a structure of systematic conceptual design process for designing engineering systems. And we developed the automatic feeding screw device using the proposed design process structure.

  • Design engineering process for field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based reactor trip functions are developed in this work. The process discussed in this work is based on the systems engineering approach. The overall design process is effectively implemented by combining with design and implementation processes. It transforms its overall development process from traditional V-model to Y-model. This approach gives the benefit of concurrent engineering of design work with software implementation. As a result, it reduces development time and effort. The design engineering process consisted of five activities, which are performed and discussed: needs/systems analysis; requirement analysis; functional analysis; design synthesis; and design verification and validation. Those activities are used to develop FPGA-based reactor bistable trip functions that trigger reactor trip when the process input value exceeds the setpoint. To implement design synthesis effectively, a model-based design technique is implied. The finite-state machine with data path structural modeling technique together with very high speed integrated circuit hardware description language and the Aldec Active-HDL tool are used to design, model, and verify the reactor bistable trip functions for nuclear power plants.

  • There are many intermediate web guides in cold rolling mills process such as CRM (cold rolling mill), CGL (continuous galvanizing line), EGL (electrical galvanizing line) and so on. The main functions of the web guides are to adjust the center line of the web (strip) to the center line of the steel process. So they are called CPC (center position control). Rapid process speed cause large deviation between the center position of the strip and the process line. Too much deviation is not desirable. So the difference between the center position of the strip and the process line should be compensated. In general, the center position control of the web is obtained by the hydraulic driver and electrical controller. In this paper, we propose modelling and several controller designs for web-guide systems. We model the web and guide by using geometrical relations of the guide ignored the mass and stiffness of the web. To control the systems, we propose PID controllers with their gains tuned by the Ziegler-Nichols method, the H$\_$$\infty$/ controller model-matching method, and the coefficient diagram method (CDM). CDM is modified for high order systems. The results are verified by computer simulations.

  • Copper has been used as an interconnect material in the fabrication of semiconductor devices, because of its higher electrical conductivity and superior electro-migration resistance. Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) technique is required to planarize the overburden Cu film in an interconnect process. Various problems such as dishing, erosion, and delamination are caused by the high pressure and chemical effects in the Cu CMP process. But these problems have to be solved for the fabrication of the next generation semiconductor devices. Therefore, new process which is electro-chemical mechanical planarization/polishing (ECMP) or electro-chemical mechanical planarization was introduced to solve the. technical difficulties and problems in CMP process. In the ECMP process, Cu ions are dissolved electrochemically by the applying an anodic potential energy on the Cu surface in an electrolyte. And then, Cu complex layer are mechanically removed by the mechanical effects between pad and abrasive. This paper focuses on the manufacturing of ECMP system and its process. ECMP equipment which has better performance and stability was manufactured for the planarization process.

  • A high-speed railway system represents a typical example of large-scale multi-disciplinary system, consisting of subsystems such as rolling-stock, electrical hardware, electronics, control, information, communication, civil technology etc. The system design and acquisition data of the large-scale system must be the subject under strict configuration control and management. Systems engineering technology development project for Korea next generation High-speed Electric Multiple Unit (HEMU) system in progress is a national large system development project that is not only a large-size and complex but also multi-disciplinary in nature. Therefore, all stakeholders must understand and share the functional and performance requirements of HEMU throughout its life-cycle phases. Also in the test and evaluation phase, all systems requirements must be verified. In 2011, the prototype train manufacturing will be completed. It will do test run on the commercial line and all systems requirements are verified until 2012. For the system verification, the test and evaluation process have to be established before the test trial run. Using a systems engineering tool, the system design database(SDD) with requirements traceability and development process management in the course of the development have to be established. This paper represents the test and evaluation process development based on the SEMP(Systems Engineering Management Plan) developed in the design stage. The test and evaluation process is refined and updated in comparison to the design stage one. The test and evaluation process consists of procedure, test and evaluation method and schedule. So through this process, it is defined that each systems requirements is verified on which test and about what time.

  • The Korean High-speed train was developed during 1996 to 2007. This development project consists of many sub-projects and the train-system includes a lot of sub-systems. In order to promote the project on planned cost and time effectively, we tried to apply systems engineering process during the whole life-cycle. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the systems engineering process applied to this project. Activities carried out in each phase such as pre-design, detailed-design, integration & verification are described.

  • The aim of this study is to propose the design process suitable for developing the cognitive interface considering system engineering process (SEP) models. Due to the cognitive workload in an operation of HMS, some cognitive interfaces have been developed. It is somehow difficult to use the developed cognitive interface in real working environment since they often showed a conflict to stereotyped interface. So it is necessary to develop the design process suitable for the more operator-specific interface. Various SEP models were reviewed for selecting the suitable design process which might resolve the problem from design-specific interface. The suitable process for designing cognitive interface was proposed considering currently usable SEP models. The findings from the study may be helpful for systematic approach to designing cognitive interface in digitalized environment. The proposed design process would be applied for easily employing the cognitive interface in digitalized working environment such as main control room in nuclear power plant.

  • Due to the nature of the long-term project of a Railway business, Many problems have been arisen in the process of delivering products or systems verified by suppliers to the customer's operation site. Unexpectedly, it is often necessary for the verified products to store intermediately at the supplier's site for a variety of reasons, such as delays in business and delays in civil engineering, at the time of sending them to the customer's operation site. In this study, the intermediate storage process for finding and solving problems related to intermediate storage was presented focusing on the Rolling Stock of Railway System by reference to ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288:2015. A suitable intermediate storage process based on the developed product or system's characteristics will allow the verified products or systems to be placed on the customer's operation site and to meet the customer's product or system requirements.
