Structures consisting of concrete and steel parts, which are irregular in damping ratios are investigated. This investigation is a code-based seismic design of such structures. Several practical difficulties encountered, due to inherent differences in the nature of dynamic response of each part, and the different damping ratios of the two parts. These structures are irregular in damping ratios and have complex modes of vibration so that their analysis cannot be handled with the readily available commercial software. Therefore, this work aims to provide simple yet sufficiently accurate constant values of equivalent damping ratios applied to the whole structure for handling the damping irregularity of such structures. The results show that the equivalent damping ratio changes with the height of the building and the kind of the structural system, but it is constant for all accelerations values. Thus, available software SAP2000 applied for seismic analysis, design and the provisions of existing seismic codes. Finally, evaluation of different kinds of structural system used in this research to find the most energy dissipating one found by finding the best value of quality coefficient.
Eddy current are induced when a nonmagnetic, conductive material is moving as the result of being subjected to the magnetic field, or if it is placed in a time-varying magnetic field. These currents circulate in the conductive material and are dissipated, causing a repulsive force between the magnet and conductor. Using this concept, eddy current damping can be used as a form of viscous damping. This paper investigated analytically and experimentally the characteristics of an eddy current damping when a permanent magnet is placed in a conductive tube. The theoretical model of the eddy current damping is developed from electromagnetics and is verified from Maxwell program and experiments. From these comparisons, although predictability is not accurate at high excitation frequencies, the present model can be used to predict damping force at low excitation frequencies. In order to improve the prediction of the characteristics of an eddy current damping, the induced magnetic flux densities have to be considered in following researches.

This paper presents the vibrational characteristics of linear damped vibrational systems with a linear dynamic absorber. The amplitude ratios of main vibrational system are derived from the equation of motion for the system, and optimal natural frequency ratio and damping ratio of dynamic absorber are obtained by computer simu- lation, which minimize the amplitude ratio of main vibrational system for the whole range of the frequency ratio. And, the effects of the parameters on the amplitude ratios are investigated. As the results, the effect of the natural frequency ratio on the amplitude ratio of main vibrational system is more important than that of the damping ratio of dynamic absorber as damping ratio of main vibrational system becomes larger. For the case of large damping ration of main vibrational system becomes larger. For the case of large damping ratio of main vibration system, the amplitude ratios are not decreased dramationally in spite of inoreasing mass ratio.
Through experimental works, the damping force vibration problem was investigated, which results from valve and surge pressure in the oil return line of the hydraulic circuit of an active suspension system in a passenger cu. Experiments were carried out under passive system, where an orifice valve was closed and non-active system, where an orifice valve was opened, using a pressure control valve controlled by solenoid. The effects of parameters of the valve overlap and accumulator on smoothing surge pressure was elucidated. It was proved that the apparent variation of damping force due to the overlap amount of pressure control valve is the most important factor to control the damping force variation. The procedure of the experimental works shows the development process of a proportional pressure control valve in the hydraulics system of an active suspension system of passenger car.
This paper assesses efficiency of the continuum method as the idealized system of building structures. A modified Coupled Two-Beam (CTB) model equipped with classical and non-classical damping has been proposed and solved analytically. In this system, complementary (non-classical) damping models composed of bending and shear mechanisms have been defined. A spatial shear damping model which is non-homogeneously distributed has been adopted in the CTB formulation and used to equivalently model passive dampers, viscous and viscoelastic devices, embedded in building systems. The application of continuum-based models for the dynamic analysis of shear wall systems has been further discussed. A reference example has been numerically analyzed to evaluate the efficiency of the presented CTB, and the optimization problems of the shear damping have been finally ascertained using local and global performance indices. The results reveal the superior performance of non-classical damping models against the classical damping. They show that the critical position of the first modal rotation in the CTB is reliable as the optimum placement of the shear damping. The results also prove the good efficiency of such a continuum model, in addition to its simplicity, for the fast estimation of dynamic responses and damping optimization issues in building systems.
The effect of hydrodynamic damping on intake tower is twofold: one is fluid damping and another is structural damping. Fluid damping can be derived analytically from the governing equation of the fluid-structure-interaction (FSI) problem which yields a very complicated solution. To avoid the complexity of the FSI problem water-tower system can be simplified by considering water as added mass. However, in such a system a reconsideration of structural damping is required. This study investigates the effects of this damping on the dynamic response of the intake tower, where, apart from the "no water (NW)" condition, six other cases have been adopted depending on water height. Two different cross-sections of the tower are considered and also two different damping properties have been used for each case as well. Dynamic analysis has been carried out using horizontal ground motion as input. Finally, the result shows how hydrodynamic damping affects the dynamic behavior of an intake tower with the change of water height and cross-section. This research will help a designer to consider more conservative damping properties of intake tower which might vary depending on the shape of the tower and height of water.
Most of high-rise buildings in Japan*1 are structure with damping systems recently. The design procedure is performance-based design (PBD), which is based on the nonlinear response history procedure (NRHP) using 2 or 3-dimentional frame model. In addition, hysteretic property of steel plates or velocity-dependent property of viscous dampers are common practice for the damping system. However, for the selection of damping system, the easy dynamic analysis of recent date may lead the most of engineers to focus attention on the maximum response only without thinking how it shakes. By nature, the seismic design shall be to figure out the action of inertia forces by complex & dynamic loads including periodic and pulse-like characteristics, what we call seismic ground motion. And it shall be done under the dynamic condition. On the contrary, we engineers engineers have constructed the easy-to-use static loads and devoted ourselves to handle them. The structures with damping system shall be designed considering how the stiffness & damping to be applied to the structures against the inertia forces with the viewpoint of dynamic aspect. In this paper we reconsider the role of damping in vibration and give much thought to the basic of shake with damping from a standpoint of structural design. Then, we present some design examples based on them.
In spite of a large amount of previous research, detail study on modified mass in proportional damping system is not well understood. It is common to predict structural dynamic design parameters due to the change of mass, but to predict the amount of modified mass and the location where the mass is being modified are rarely found in previous literature. Such inverse problem required detail analytical study in order to understand structural modification in proportional damping system. This paper predicts the modified mass and the modified mass location in proportional damping system using sensitivity coefficients and iterative method. The sensitivity coefficients are obtained from the change of eigenvectors due to mass modification. This method is applied to a horizontal beam and three degree of freedoms system. To validate the predicted changing mass and its location, the obtained results are compared to the reanalysis result which shows good agreement.
This work presents the feasibility of shunt damping far vibration suppression of the rotating HDD disk-spindle system using piezoelectric bimorph. A target vibration mode which significantly restricts the recording density increment of the drive is determined through modal analysis and a piezoelectric bimorph is designed to suppress unwanted vibration. After deriving the two-dimensional generalized electromechanical coupling coefficient of the shunted drive, the shunt damping of the system is predicted by simulating the displacement transmissibility using the coefficient. In addition, optimal design process using sensitivity analysis is undertaken in order to improve the shunt damping of the system. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is verified through experimental implementation by observing the vibration characteristics of the rotating disk-spindle system in frequency domain.
