This study aims to develop a program for enhancing family resilience in cancer patients along with their family members and verify its effectiveness. The subjects were inpatients with cancer and their families, totaling 46 subjects at an university hospital in Busan. They were divided into two groups, the participating group who were in an experiment and the control group who were not taking part in the experiment. Then family resilience was measured before and after completing the program sessions. The program was conducted once a week, 4 times, for two hours. The participating group of family resilience strengthening program showed higher family resilience compared with that of the control group. The results suggest that family resilience can be enhanced through adversity. It also verifies that family resilience of family members with cancer patients can be strengthened by expressing emotion, conveying deep affection, and sufficiently supporting one another through the family resilience strengthening approach.
The Organization's ability to respond to social disasters has begun to be treated as important through social shock situations that have never been experienced, such as COVID-19. Among them, the ability to respond to unexpected risks and resilience is emerging. Since social disasters such as infectious diseases are periodically repeated, compounded, and enlarged, they develop into a global crisis situation, so this crisis response capability is treated as national competitiveness. Therefore, this study aims to improve the organization's response capability in terms of risk response and resilience under rapid social disasters such as COVID-19. The aviation safety field was taken as an example. From the Safety-II perspective, safety management focuses on the ability to resilience in response to system vulnerabilities in various situations. In this study, I intend to apply RAG(Resilience Assessment Grid) of Respond, Monitor, Learn and Anticipate, the four major potential of resilience engineering. Based on Hollnagel's research, potential elements were classified into four, and items were organized through an expert panel using Delphi techniques. The final configured RAG items are 15 Respond, 15 Monitor, 15 Learn and 11 Anticipate. The RAG was evaluated by 42 experts in the field of aviation safety.
The adoption of cladding panels as dissipation device is a sort of passive control "ante litteram" for residential and commercial buildings. This paper gives details on the current technology outlining the difference between buffer panels and cladding panels. The discussion of robustness and resilience of the resulting system is afforded. It is shown that the strength of such solution, originally related to economy and light weight, is mainly associated with the respect of the main robustness requisites, as well as the short time it requires for removal and replacement (resilience).
A nuclear power plant (NPP) is a highly complex system-of-systems as manifested through its internal systems interdependence. The negative impact of such interdependence was demonstrated through the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. As such, there is a critical need for new strategies to overcome the limitations of current risk assessment techniques (e.g. the use of static event and fault tree schemes), particularly through simulation of the nonlinear dynamic feedback mechanisms between the different NPP systems/components. As the first and key step towards developing an integrated NPP dynamic probabilistic risk assessment platform that can account for such feedback mechanisms, the current study adopts a system dynamics simulation approach to model the thermal dynamic processes in: the reactor core; the secondary coolant system; and the pressurized water reactor. The reactor core and secondary coolant system parameters used to develop system dynamics models are based on those of the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station. These three system dynamics models are subsequently validated, using results from published work, under different system perturbations including the change in reactivity, the steam valve coefficient, the primary coolant flow, and others. Moving forward, the developed system dynamics models can be integrated with other interacting processes within a NPP to form the basis of a dynamic system-level (systemic) risk assessment tool.
A bridge transportation network supplies products from various source nodes to destination nodes through bridge structures in a target region. However, recent frequent earthquakes have caused damage to bridge structures, resulting in extreme direct damage to the target area as well as indirect damage to other lifeline structures. Therefore, in this study, a surrogate model-based comprehensive framework to estimate the seismic resilience of bridge transportation networks is proposed. For this purpose, total system travel time (TSTT) is introduced for accurate performance indicator of the bridge transportation network, and an artificial neural network (ANN)-based surrogate model is constructed to reduce traffic analysis time for high-dimensional TSTT computation. The proposed framework includes procedures for constructing an ANN-based surrogate model to accelerate network performance computation, as well as conventional procedures such as direct Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) calculation and bridge restoration calculation. To demonstrate the proposed framework, Pohang bridge transportation network is reconstructed based on geographic information system (GIS) data, and an ANN model is constructed with the damage states of the transportation network and TSTT using the representative earthquake epicenter in the target area. For obtaining the seismic resilience curve of the Pohang region, five epicenters are considered, with earthquake magnitudes 6.0 to 8.0, and the direct and indirect damages of the bridge transportation network are evaluated. Thus, it is concluded that the proposed surrogate model-based framework can efficiently evaluate the seismic resilience of a high-dimensional bridge transportation network, and also it can be used for decision-making to minimize damage.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to define and clarify the concept of 'resilience' in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Methods: A hybrid model was used to develop the concept of resilience. The model included a field study carried out in Cheonan, Korea. The participants in this study were 9 patients with cardiovascular diseases who underwent a percutaneous coronary intervention. Results: The concept of resilience was found to be a complex phenomenon having meanings in two dimensions: the personal-dispositional and interpersonal dimensions. Four attributes and seven indicators were defined. Conclusion: A resilient person was defined as one who has a positive attitude toward restoration, the power to reconstruct and control his/her disease (personal dimension), and support from a supportive system with supportive persons (interpersonal dimension). In the clinical setting, resilience plays an important role in managing the care plans of cardiovascular patients. Therefore, nurses who work closely with patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases should be aware of the attributes and indicators of resilience to enhance the resilience of their patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of resilience, family support, anxiety and depression in patients with hematologic malignancy, and to determine modifiable psychosocial factors that affect their resilience. Methods: Data were collected from 104 patients undergoing curative therapy at 'S' hospital in Seoul. The data were collected from April to May, 2012. The questionnaires included Korean Version of Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Family Support Scale and Hospital Anxiety-Depression Scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Resilience had statistically significant correlation with family support (r=.43, p<.001), anxiety (r=-.49, p<.001) and depression (r=-.52, p<.001). Factors influencing resilience were depression, family support, anxiety and time since diagnosis with R-sq. value of 36%. Conclusion: The results of the study show that family support, anxiety and depression have important influences on resilience of patients with hematologic malignancy. Thus, family support needs to be reinforced when developing and implementing nursing intervention, and nurses need to intervene to reduce anxiety and depression of patients with hematologic malignancy.

Inter-domain routing is the most critical function of the Internet. The routing system is a logical network relying on the physical infrastructure with geographical characteristics. Nature disasters or disruptive accidents such as earthquakes, cable cuts and power outages could cause regional failures which fail down geographically co-located network nodes and links, therefore, affect the resilience of inter-domain routing system. This paper presents a model for regional failures in inter-domain routing system called REFER for the first time. Based on REFER, the resilience of the inter-domain routing system could be evaluated on a finer level of the Internet, considering different routing policies of intra-domain and inter-domain routing systems. Under this model, we perform simulations on an empirical topology of the Internet with geographical characteristics to simulate a regional failure locating at a city with important IXP (Internet eXchange Point). Results indicate that the Internet is robust under a city-level regional failure. The reachability is almost the same after the failure, and the reroutings occur at the edge of the Internet, hardly affecting the core of inter-domain routing system.
Resilience is defined as the intrinsic ability of a system to adjust its functioning prior to, during, or following changes and disturbances, so that it can sustain required operations or functions with the related systems under both expected and unexpected conditions. Resilience engineering is a relatively new paradigm for safety management that focuses on how to cope with complexity under pressure or disturbance to achieve successful functioning. This study aims to develop a quantitative resilience model for severe accident response organizations of nuclear power plants using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. First, we investigated severe accident response organizations based on a radiation emergency plan in the Korean case and developed a qualitative resilience model for the organizations with resilience-influencing factors, which have been identified in the author's previous studies. Then, a quantitative model for entire severe accident response organizations was developed by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method with a tool for System Dynamics. For applying the AHP method, several experts who are working on implementing, regulating or researching the severe accident response participated in collecting their expertise on the relative importance between all the possible relations in the model. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to discuss which factors have the most influenceable on resilience.
