A 3D CAD system that can be used on a smart device is proposed. Smart devices are now a part of everyday life and also are widely being used in various industry domains. The proposed 3D CAD system would allow modeling in a rapid and intuitive manner on a smart device when an engineer makes a 3D model of a product while moving in an engineering site. There are several obstacles to develop a 3D CAD system on a smart device such as low computing power and the small screen of smart devices, imprecise touch inputs, and transfer problems of created 3D models between PCs and smart devices. The author discusses the system design of a 3D CAD system on a smart device. The selection of the modeling operations, the assignment of touch gestures to these operations, and the construction of a geometric kernel for creating both meshes and a procedural CAD model are introduced. The proposed CAD system has been implemented for validation by user tests and to demonstrate case studies using test examples. Using the proposed system, it is possible to produce a 3D editable model swiftly and simply in a smart device environment to reduce design time of engineers.
The purpose of this study is to develop an efficient model for the least cost design of multisite detention systems. The IDP (Incremental Dynamic Programming) model for optimal design is composed of two sub-models: hydrologic - hydraulic model and optimization model. The objective function of IDP is the sum of costs; acquisition cost of the land, construction cost of detention basin and pumping system. Model inputs include channel characteristics, hydrologic paramenters, design storm, and cost function. The model is applied to the Jung- Rang Cheon basin in Seoul, a watershed with detention basins in multiple branching channels. The application results show that the detention system can be designed reasonably for various conditions and the model can be applied to multi-site detention system design.
This paper presents a workload based model and cell design support system (CDSS) in manufacturing cell design. The proposed model consider manufacturing factor such as machine capacity, production volume, process time, and cell size. Based on those information, workload is calculated and according to the workload, the relationship between machine and part is represented by the workload matrix. To form the manufacturing cell, correlation similarity coefficient (CSC) among machines are calculated and a pair of machines that has the highest value of CSC is assigned to a machine cell. Repeat the above steps until the desired manufacturing cells are obtained. Finally, a cell design support system that could increase the efficiency in the application of a proposed model is developed. The proposed model and CDSS are illustrated by a numerical example.

Design data, information, and knowledge have complex associations with each other. Systems related with the management of the data, information, and knowledge are various, and the representations are numerous. Therefore it is difficult to construct a knowledge based design system with a full association knowledge for supporting the design tasks. In this research, OWL based ontology model for an excavator design is developed for the representation of the relationships. Also an ontology model is used to develop the knowledge based excavator design system.

Through a simulation experiment, often an experimenter is concerned with estimating the system parameters of the linear model consisting of m design points from the outputs oft the simulation model. To improve the estimation of the system parameters and reliability of these estimators, appropriate simulation techniques have been developed. For the first order linear model, Schruben and Margolin (1978) exploited the random number assignment rules which uses a combination of common random numbers and antithetic streams in a simulation experiment designed to estimate the system parameters when the design matrix of simulation model admits orthogonal blocking into two blocks. Nozari, Arnold and Pegden (1984) developed a method for appliying the method of control variates to the situation of the linear model having multiple design points. This talk deals with a different way of utilizing controls under the correlation induction strategy of Schruben and Margolin's to improve the simulation efficiency, and presents a procedure for obtaining the estimators of the system parameters analytically. Simulation results on a selected simulation model indicate a promising evidence that a proposed method may yield better results than Schruben and Margolin's method.
Rice Processing Complex(RPC) have being constructed with a rice mill plant and a facility of drying and storage to overcome problems caused by UR and to produce good quality of rice. An optimal design of a rice mill plant was required to successfully construct and operate it. The development of a simulation model was essential to the design of a rice mill plant. So, all the objectives of this study were to develop a simulation model for the design of a rice mill plant and to develop and evaluate the rice mill system. In this study the simulation model was developed to design a rice mill plant using SLAMSYSTEM, one of simulation languages. The results of this study were as followings. 1. A simulation model was developed with SLAMSYSTEM to represent the processes of a rice mill plant. The simulation model was used to design a rice mill pilot plant with the capacity of 0.5 ton per hour. The rice mill pilot plant was analyzed by the model with alternatives. 2. In the simulation the rice mill system was much influenced by the separating efficiency of a brown rice separator. Especially, the bottleneck of grain flow occurred at the buffer tank for brown rica. separator under 50% separating efficiency of brown rice separator. Hence, as the alternative simulation was conducted under 60% , 70% separating efficiency of brown rice separator, the bottleneck of the system could be minimized at the 60% separating efficiency of brown rice separator. 3. In the alternative simulation the bottleneck of the system was minimized under the hulling capacity of 1 t/h and 60% separating efficiency of brown rice separator with the capacity of 1 t/h. Under such a condition the max. weight of waiting entities at buffer tanks was less 250kg. So, the capacities of the buffer tanks were determined in the basis of simulation results. 4. The milled rice recovery and head rice recovery of the milling system were 74% and 92% in the simulation, respectively. These results of simulation almost corresponded to those of actual rice mill plants. The developed simulation model could be well applied to design a rice mill plant.

Quality design in practice highly depends on human designer's intuition and past experiences due to lack of formal knowledge about the relationship among 10 variables. This paper represents an data mining approach for developing quality design support system that integrates Case Based Reasoning (CBR) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to effectively support all the steps in quality design process. CBR stores design cases in a systematic way and retrieve them quickly and accurately. ANN predicts the resulting quality attributes of design alternatives that are generated from CBR's adaptation process. When the predicted attributes fail to meet the target values, quality design simulation starts to further adapt the alternatives to the customer's new orders. To implement the quality design simulation, this paper suggests (1) the data screening method based on ξ-$\delta$ Ball to obtain the robust ANN models from the large production data bases, (2) the procedure of quality design simulation using ANN and (3) model management system that helps users find the appropriate one from the ANN model base. The integration of CBR and ANN provides quality design engineers the way that produces consistent and reliable design solutions in the remarkably reduced time.

In this paper, and optimum profile of a cam being used in a VTR Deck mechanism is designed by the response surface analysis. The objective function of the design is to reduce driving torque of the pinch roller system that is used to compress video tape to the capstan motor axia. The pinch roller system that will be designed is modeled using the general purpopse mechanism analysis program DADS. The computer model is compared with the physical system for reliability. A model function to represent relationship between design variables and the objective function is estimated by the response surface analysis. Once the model function is reliably estimated the optimal design is carried out using the model function and each design variable's boundaries. To verify improvement of the pinch roller system, a prototype for the pinch rooler system is made and tested. From the test result, an optimum cam profile to resuce driving torque of the pinch roller system is verified.

This work is mainly done by too many manual operations in the aircraft structure design process resulting in heavy workload, low efficiency and quality, non-standardized processes and procedures. A top-down associated design method employing the template parametric technology is proposed here in order to improve the quality of design and efficiency of aircraft wing structure at the preliminary design stage. The appropriate parametric tool is chosen and the rapid design system of knowledge-driven aircraft wing structure is developed. First, a skeleton model of aircraft wing structure is rapidly built up through the template encapsulated design knowledge. Associated design is then introduced to realize the association between the typical structural part and skeleton model. Finally, the related elements are referenced from skeleton model, and a typical structural part reflecting an automatic response for design changes of the upstream skeleton model is quickly constructed within the template. The rapid design system proposed and developed in this paper is able to formalize the design standardization of aircraft wing structure and thus the rapid generation of different aircraft wing structure programs and achieve the structural design knowledge reuse as well.
This paper presents a database design for power system operational planning system of the integrated system for power system operational planning and analysis that will be more economical and stable of power system operation. An alias of the integrated system is Highly Integrated Total Energy System(HITES). We first describe the requirements for the Power System Planning System of HTES. Database design is processed in two phases(conceptual design and physical design), and CDM(Conceptual Data Model) and PDM(Physical Data Model) are generated by Powerdesigner(CASE tool for database design). In the future, the constructed database needs to be tested and tuning.
