  • Radiometric calibration is a prerequisite to quantitative remote sensing, and its accuracy has a direct impact on the reliability and accuracy of the quantitative application of remotely sensed data. This paper presents absolute radiometric calibration of the KOMPSAT-3 (KOrea Multi Purpose SATellite-3) and cross calibration using the Landsat-8 OLI (Operational Land Imager). Absolute radiometric calibration was performed using a reflectance-based method. Correlations between TOA (Top Of Atmosphere) radiances and the spectral band responses of the KOMPSAT-3 sensors in Goheung, South Korea, were significant for multispectral bands. A cross calibration method based on the Landsat-8 OLI was also used to assess the two sensors using near simultaneous image pairs over the Libya-4 PICS (Pseudo Invariant Calibration Sites). The spectral profile of the target was obtained from EO-1 (Earth Observing-1) Hyperion data over the Libya-4 PICS to derive the SBAF (Spectral Band Adjustment Factor). The results revealed that the TOA radiance of the KOMPSAT-3 agree with Landsat-8 within 5.14% for all bands after applying the SBAF. The radiometric coefficient presented here appears to be a good standard for maintaining the optical quality of the KOMPSAT-3.

  • Calibration mirror mechanism has been widely used for on-board calibration with black body. The calibration mirror is deployed to reflect the radiation energy from the black body to the image sensor for calibrating the sensor system. After the calibration, the calibration mirror is stowed not to hide a main optical path. It also has a fail-safe function which can stow the mirror by just removing the input power of motor when the calibration mirror is stopped at certain position during the calibration. In the present work, the operation concept, design, torque analysis and functional test results of the calibration mirror mechanism with the aforementioned function have been introduced and investigated.

  • Calibration capability was evaluated using the reference-grade platinum resistance thermometer (PRT) in the temperature range of $-50^{\circ}C$ to $250^{\circ}C$ for the national calibration centers. The reference-grade PRT was calibrated at the several fixed points, which was composed by the freezing points of Sn, In, the melting point of Ga and the triple point of water and Hg, before and after the round-robin test (RRT) experiments. The temperature scale of reference-grade PRT was compared to the local standard PRT's using the system of the national calibration centers. $E_{n}$ values was calculated by the temperature difference between the reference-grade PRT and the local standard PRT, and the best measurement capability. Finally, the capability of the national calibration centers was evaluated by the $E_{n}$ values.

  • The utilization of micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) gyros and accelerometers in low-level inertial measurement unit (IMU) influences cost effectiveness in a positive way under the condition that device error characteristics are fully calibrated. The conventional calibration process utilizes a rate table; however, this paper proposes a new method for achieving reference calibration data from the natural motion of pendulum to which the IMU undergoing calibration is attached. This concept was validated with experimental data. The pendulum angle measurements correlate extremely well with the solutions acquired from the pendulum equation of motion. The calibration data were computed using the regression method. The whole process was validated by comparing the measurement from the 6 sensor components with the measurements reconstructed using the identified calibration data.

  • An accurate measurement of the train-track interaction forces is important for track performance evaluation. In the field calibration test as a wheel load measurement process, the calibration system creates a different boundary condition in comparison with that in the train wheel passage. This study aims to evaluate a reliability of the field calibration test in the process of wheel load measurement. Finite element models were developed to compare the deformed shapes, bending moment and shear force profiles on the rail section. The analysis results revealed that the deformed shapes and their associated bending moment profiles on the rail are significantly different in two numerical simulations of the calibration test and the train wheel load passage. However, the shear stress profile on the rail section of the strain gauge installation in the field was almost identical, which may imply that the current calibration test is sufficiently reliable.

  • In this paper, we formulate the extended Kalman filter for calibration of gimballed inertial navigation system (GINS) at a pure navigation mode with 1500 ft/sec initial velocity and compare its performance to the linear Kalman filter's by using Monte-Carlo analysis method. It has been shown that estimation performance of the extended Kalman filter is better than that of the linear Kalman filter.

  • It is necessary to calibrate measurement systems to enhance its measurement accuracy. The visual sensing system that is presented in our previous work has to be calibrated, too. It is a multiple mirror system for three-dimensional measurement, which is composed of a camera and a series of mirrors. It is important to calibrate the positions and orientations of the mirrors relative to the camera because they have direct influence on the relationship between the image plane and the task space. This paper presents the calibration method for the visual sensing system. To confirm the measurement performance of the implemented system. its measurement accuracy in measuring the locations in three-dimensional space is investigated. A series of experiments for measuring the locations of the circle-shaped marks are performed. Experimental results show that the sensing system can be effectively used for three-dimensional measurement.

  • This paper presents manufacturing and evaluation of a non-contact rotational torque measurement system which consists of torque cell, telemeter system, transmitter and receiver coil, transmitter, receiver and telemeter indicator. Static calibration test results show that the system has a maximum uncertaintry of 05% or less. A standar calibration system for rotational torque is used to evaluate the measurement system, As a result, the maximum uncertainty for measuring rotational torque by this system is 2% or less. We may conclude that the measurement system is sufficient to measure rotational torque of shaft in industry.
