A hot-dip simulator was utilized to replicate abnormal coating buildup observed during line stops at galvanize lines, assessing the influence of processing conditions on buildup (up to 14 mm/side). Steel samples from 19 coils (comprising IF, BH, LCAK, HSLA, DP600-DP1180, Si: 0.006 - 0.8 wt%, P: 0.009 - 0.045 wt%) were examined to explore the phenomenon of heavy coating growth. It was discovered that heavy coating buildup (~3 mm/h) and rapid strip dissolution (~0.17 mm/h) in a GA or GI pot can manifest with specific combinations of steel chemistry and processing conditions. The results reveal the formation of a unique coating microstructure, characterized by a blend of bulky Zeta crystals and free Zn pockets/networks due to the "Sandlin" growth mechanism. Key variables contributing to abnormal coating growth include steel Si content, anneal temperature, dew point in heating and soaking furnaces, Zn pot temperature, Zn bath Al%, and cold-rolling reduction%. At ArcelorMittal Dofasco galvanize lines, an automatic online warning system for operators and special scheduling for incoming Si-bearing steels have been implemented, effectively preventing further heavy buildup occurrences.

A more reliable algorithm for detecting a high impedance fault (HIF) requires voltage and current at the relaying point containing information of HIF characteristics including buildup/shoulder as well as nonlinearity/asymmetry. This paper presents a modeling method of an HIF in a distribution system. In order to do this, the proposed method uses two series time-varying resistances (TVRs) controlled by Transient Analysis of Control Systems (TACS) in EMTP. One TVR is employed for nonlinearity/asymmetry and then the other TVR for buildup/shoulder. The proposed method is implemented in EMTP and thus the voltage and current at the relaying point can be obtained.

Use of high yield pulp and recycled fiber as raw materials and water system closure result in higher fines content and buildup of organic and inorganic contaminants in white water. These are detrimental for the effectiveness of chemical additives including retention aids. Thus it is imperative to employ a retention systems that maintains its efficiency in closed papermaking system for reducing fresh water consumption. The performance of four different microparticle retention systems including cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM)/bentonite, highly charged cationic starch (HCS)/silica, C-PAM/micropolymer, cationic guar gum (CGG)/silica was evaluated and compared at three different levels of papermaking system closure. Buildup of detrimental substances in a closed white water system increased cationic demand and finally reduced the performance of retention systems. Cationic starch and guar gums maintained their effectiveness in retention in closed white water systems contaminated with anionic trashes because of their structural rigidity and hydrogen bonding ability. Particularly, cationic guar gums, due its stiffness of molecular structure, appeared perform better than catinonic starch.

For the treatment of superficial tumors like squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, 6 MV photon beam is not appropriate and a spoiler is widely used to increase dose in the buildup region, while preserving the skin sparing effect. However, commercially available treatment planning systems assume a normal unspoiled beam, thereby cannot predict the buildup dose with spoiler accurately. We aimed to implement a Monte Carlo (MC) based planning system to apply it to the radiation treatment of head and neck. Lucite with thickness of 10-mm was used for the beam spoiler with Siemens Primus 6 MV photon beam. BEAM/DOSXYZ MC system was employed to model the linac and the spoiler. To verify the calculation accuracy of MC simulations, the percent depth doses (PDDs) and profiles with and without spoiler were measured using a parallel-plate chamber. For the MC based planning, we adopted a hybrid interface system between Pinnacle (Philips, USA) and BEAM/DOSXYZ to support treatment parameters of Siemens linac and the spoiler. The measurements of PDDs and profiles agreed with the corresponding MC simulations within 2% (lSD), which demonstrate the reliability of our MC simulations. The spoiler generated electrons make a contribution to the absorbed dose up to depth of 2cm, which shows that the dominant source of increased dose from spoiler system is the contaminating electrons created by the spoiler. The whole procedures necessary for MC based treatment planning were performed seamlessly between Pinnacle and BEAM/DOSXYZ system. This ability helps to increase the clinical efficiency of the spoiler technique. In conclusion, we implemented a MC based treatment planning system for a 6 MV photon beam with a spoiler. We demonstrate sophisticated MC technique makes it possible to predict dose distributions around buildup region accurately.
A more reliable relaying algorithm for detecting a high impedance fault (HIF) requires fault currents at the relaying point containing information of various HIF characteristics as well as load conditions. As HIF characteristics, there are buildup, shoulder, nonlinearity and asymmetry. This paper presents a modeling method of a HIF in a distribution system using EMTP. In order to represent HIF characteristics, the proposed method uses two time-varying resistances. The first TVR models nonlinearity and asymmetry using voltage as the input. The second TVR models buildup and shoulder using time information as the input. The proposed method is implemented in EMTP.

Air handling unit (AHU)'s air filter pressure difference is important for energy consumption and indoor air quality. Both energy Performance data and air filter differential pressure of AHU in real office buildings were monitored and analyzed to investigate quantitatively energy impact as dust buildup level on air filter grows. We also modeled and simulated CAV system using HVACSIM+ program to examine the energy effect of dust buildup on filters. Through analysis of time series pressure drop data, the filter pressure difference rate has been increased due to cumulative supply air flow rate increase. As filter pressure drop increased to 1 inch water column, it is found that the supply air flow rate was decreased by 10%, the chilled water flow rate was increased by 5.9% and the pump energy consumption was increased to 5.9%.
Radioactive nuclides deposited on out-of-core surface after the radiation in the core by the transport of corrosion products (CRUD) through the primary coolant system in PWR which is the major plant type in Korea, are leading sources of radiation exposure to plant maintenance personnel. Thus, the optimal chemistry operation method is required for the reduction of radiation exposure by the corrosion products. This study analysed the actual water chemistry operation data of four operating domestic PWRs. And in order to evaluate the coolant chemistry operation data, a computer code which can calculate the activity buildup in the various chemistry conditions of PWR coolant was employed. Through the analysis of comparison between the activity buildup of actual water chemistry operation mode and that of assumed Elevated Li operation mode calculated by the computer code, it was found that the out-of core radioactivity can be reduced by diminishing the deposition of corrosion products on the core in case that the Elevated Li operation mode is applied to the coolant chemistry operation of PWR. And the higher coolant pH operation was shown to have the advantage of the reduction of out-of-core activity buildup if the integrity of system structural materials and fuel cladding is guaranteed.
The Immersed boundary method(IBM) is one of CFD techniques which can simulate flow field around complex objectives using simple Cartesian grid system. In the previous studies the IBM has mostly been implemented to fractional step method based Navier-Stokes solvers. In these cases, pressure buildup near IB was found to occur when linear interpolation and stadard mass conservation is used and the interpolation scheme became complicated when higher order of interpolation is adopted. In this study, we implement the IBM to an incompressible Navier-Stokes solver which uses SIMPLE algorithm. Bi-linear and quadratic interpolation equations were formulated by using only geometric information of boundary to reconstruct velocities near IB. Flow around 2D circular cylinder at Re=40 and 100 was solved by using these formulations. It was found that the pressure buildup was not observed even when the bi-linear interpolation was adopted. The use of quadratic interpolation made the predicted aerodynamic forces in good agreement with those of previous studies.
