  • Where the industrial waste is increasing in number of kind and in quantities by the industrialization and population increases, the pollution problem is not only national but grobal question of the day. This paper is trying to invite attentions by the people who are working in both sector-natural sciences and industries in reviewing limited reports and materials. 1. By the chemical evaluation of over 20 industrial waste produced in Korea, potential wastes for commercial fertilizer would be wastes from alcohol fermantation, beer brewery, leather processing, synthetic fiber, and coffee grounds. 2. The composition of city waste is differ from other countries and sludge cake from human feces processing is promising one in the organic matter and phosphate content particularly. However, the content of heavy matals, specific order, and availability of phosphate are the bottle-neck for the development. 3. There is one commercial fertilizer from industrial waste in the market. It is very reasonable in the content of nitrogen and organic matter, and its formulation and responeses on crops. 4. Discussions were also given on the general problems in processing and marketing of fertilizers from industrial waste, however, scientists and industrial owners have to pay more attention on the development of fertilizers from tire industrial wastes because of vital environmental protection view-point.

  • Since 1962, varietal development and dissemination for summer upland crops have been actively initiated by the Crop Experiment Station, Office of Rural Development, Suweon, Korea. The major breeding objectives of soybeans have been to develop varieties which are early maturing, disease resistant, and adaptable to late planting for after-barley cropping. Development of eleven new soybean varieties including Hwangkeumkong, Jangyeobkong, Danyeobkong, and Kwangkyo has greatly increased the soybean yield throughout country. For com, after development of Hwangok #2, a synthetic, in early 1960's, nine corn hybrids-single crosses, double-crosses, and three-way crosses-such as Jecheon-ok, Hoengseong-ok, Kwangok, Suweon #19, etc., have been disseminated mainly to Kangweon province, a major corn producing area in Korea, and drew up the yield over 4 tons per hectare. The major breeding objectives of sweet potato have been to develop varieties which have high starch content and root yield. Hwangmi, Hongmi, and Shinmi are three sweet potato varieties developed and disseminated by the Crop Experiment Station, Office of Rural Development and are grown most widely in Korea. Most of researches on cultural practices of upland crops have begun on a full scale from early 1960's. In soybeans, for example, no fertilizer but for barley was applied although the effects of phosphate and potassium fertilizers were great on soybeans in after-barley soybean croppings. The effects of heavy application of phosphate and calcium fertilizers on soybeans in newly reclaimed soils were recognized. Recently a mixed fertilizer for soybean (N; 40, P:70, K:60 kg/㏊) was developed and sold for soybean growers. The optimum planting densities of 220, 000 plants/ha in full-season cropping and 330, 000 pts/ha in after-barley cropping of soybeans were known from repeated experiments. For higher yield, a means of cultural practices such as transplanting-pinching, direct planting-pinching, and hilling-up, etc., were developed along with barley-stubble planting with no tillage and integrated herbicide application for labour savings. For sweet potato, cultural practices for planting date, harvesting date, fertilizer, and planting density were fully established. For early marketing, a technique of vinyl-mulching on sweet potato has also fully developed. For com, planting density of 37, 000 pts/ha in early 1960's has been changed to 55, 000 pts/ha for grain production and 67, 000 pts/ha for silage. The amounts of fertilizers have also been changed from 120-120-120kg/ha (N-P-K) in early 1960s to 180-150-150 kg/ha. These increases in number of plants per unit area and fertilizer levels have resulted in greater production for both grain and silage. At the same time, the production techniques of F1 seeds have also improved.

  • Influence of several dehydration treatments on original structure and water behavior in the process of drying were investigated employing three hawaiian volcanic ash soils and four synthetic minerals. These three soils were developed under different rainfall condition and contained three different amount of amorphous materials in them. Measurement of water losses by oven drying at $105^{\circ}C$, $P_2O_5$ drying, freeze drying, and critical point drying revealed that more water losses were noted by oven drying than by three other drying techniques and the differences of water losses between oven and $P_2O_5$-drying were closely related to amoun: of amorphous materials in them, showing the order of Kaiwiki > Hilo > Kawaihae. This indicates that dehydration of amorphous materials by elevated temperature ($105^{\circ}C$) excluded water beyond that in the adsorbed (hygroscopic) state. The effect of dehydration treatments on initial structure was visualized by scanning electron microscopy. The micrographs showed that oven-and $P_2O_5$-dried samples formed into large mass of sub-angular blocky, dense, and closed crumbs, while the freeze dried and critical point dried samples resulted in less shrinkage, and small, fluffy and open spongy structure. However, critical point drying technique produced bulkier, softer, and greater open structure samples than even freeze drying. Additional Index Words: original structure, synthetic minerals, critical point drying, $P_2O_5$ drying. 1. This is a part of author's Ph.D. dissertation submitted to the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822 in 1979. 2. Professor of Agricultural Chemistry, Korea University.

  • Nitrate nitrogen was absorbed dominantly among the inorganic nitrogen nutrients by tobacco plant. Transport and reduction of $NO_3-N$ in plant tissue were the important metabolism for supplying synthetic N compounds to developing tissues during growth period. Under field and environment-controlled condition tobacco plants were grown and seperated to leaf tissues at stalk positions for investigation of nitrogen transport and assimilation ability during period of rapid vegative growth. The results of studies were summarized as follows: 1. $NO_3-N$ absorbed from roots was transported as inorganic nitrogen through the vascular tissue of leaf veins as resulting from the high $NO_3-N$ ratio of the nitrogen content in leaf veins, but these ratios in mesophyll tissue of the same leaf laminae decreased remarkably in disregard of higher accumulation of nitrogen being compared to midvien. 2. Mesophyll tissue of mature leaves appeared higher value of nitrate reductase activity (NRA) comparing with other tissues, stem, leaf vien, and meristmatic tissue at emergence point with young leaves. 3. Matured leaves at lower position being reducing nitrate nitrogen vigorously observed thick laminae and kept high amount of water in them. 4. Mature leaves of young plant reduced $NO_3-N$ vigorously for supply synthetic N compounds to meristmatic tissues at growing point by the reason of narrow and few leaves at young stage, but in advancing growth period NRA of mature leaves along upper position reached to lower value. This appearence attributed to distribution of organic-N compound demanding for growth to increasing numbers of wide leaves.

  • An alternative method to the empirical approach such as Langmuir and Freundlich model, surface complexation model using thermodynamic database is used to simulate adsorption behavior of cadmium for oxide minerals. Sorption of cadmium onto amorphous silica ($SiO_2$) and synthetic goethite (${\alpha}$-FeOOH) at various conditions of pH, initial cadmium loading, oxide concentration, and ionic strength, were investigated. For both oxide minerals, increasing cadmium concentration resulted in right shifting of the sorption curve of cadmium as the function of pH. The $pH_{50}$, where 50% of cadmium sorbed, of goethite (pH 5.25) was much smaller than that of the silica (pH 7.83). The sorption of cadmium onto both minerals were not affected by the background ion strength from $10^{-1}$ to $10^{-2}$ M of $KNO_3$. It indicated that the binding affinity of goethite surface for cadmium is much stronger than that of silica. The strong affinity of oxide mineral for cadmium can be explained by the existence of coordination or covalent bond between cadmium and surface of it.

  • Ground-based polarimetric scatterometers have been effective tools to monitor the growth of crop with multi-polarization and frequencies and various incident angles. An important advantage of these systems that can be exploited is temporal observation of a specific crop target. Polarimetric backscatter data at L-, C- and X-bands were acquired every 10 minutes. We analyzed the relationships between L-, C- and X-band signatures, biophysical measurements over the whole corn growth period. The Vertical transmit and Vertical receive polarization (VV) backscattering coefficients for all bands were greater than those of the Horizontal transmit and Horizontal receive polarization (HH) until early-July, and then thereafter HH-polarization was greater than VV-polarization or Horizontal transmit and Vertical receive polarization (HV) until the harvesting stage (Day Of Year, DOY 240). The results of correlation analysis between the backscattering coefficients for all bands and corn growth data showed that L-band HH-polarization (L-HH) was the most suited for monitoring the fresh weight ($r=0.95^{***}$), dry weight ($r=0.95^{***}$), leaf area index ($r=0.86^{**}$), and vegetation water content ($r=0.93^{***}$). Retrieval equations were developed for estimating corn growth parameters using L-HH. The results indicated that L-HH could be used for estimating the vegetation biophysical parameters considered here with high accuracy. Those results can be useful in determining frequency and polarization of satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar stem and in designing a future ground-based microwave system for a long-term monitoring of corn.

  • An artificial zeolite was synthesized from bituminous coal fly ash by thermo-alkali treatment, $100{\pm}3^{\circ}C$ and 3.5 N NaOH solution for 24 hours, to develope new useful material in waste water treatment system. The artificial zeolite had much higher cation exchange capacity, $299cmol^+\;kg^{-1}$ and lower concentration of extractable heavy metals than bituminous coal fly ash. The higher the temperature and the longer the shaking time, the more Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb were sorbed chemically by the artificial zeolite. Shaking artificial zeolite and wastewater at $35^{\circ}C$ for 9 hours, the amount of sorbed heavy metals were $123.5g\;kg^{-1}$ for Zn, $164.7g\;kg^{-1}$ for Cu, $184.4g\;kg^{-1}$ for Cd and $350.6g\;kg^{-1}$ for Pb, respectively.

  • Soil contamination with arsenic and heavy metals is a worldwide problem. Main objective of this research was to evaluated effects of reducing heavy metal leaching under reduced soil condition amended with industrial by-products. The contaminated soil was amended with 3% (w/w) of limestone (Ls), steel slag (SS) and acid mine drainage sludge (AMDS). Synthetic acid rain ($H_2SO_4:HNO_3=6:4$, pH 5.5 fixed) was used for feeding solution with flow rate of $0.78{\sim}0.88mL\;min^{-1}$. Results showed that similar pH and EC of leachate was observed in all treatments regardless of applied industrial by-products. However, arsenic concentration of leachate increased when industrial by-products were mixed. Meanwhile, concentration of heavy metal in the leachate decreased from 11.3 to 4.59 mg for Cd, from 92.3 to 7.93 mg for Pb, and from 11,716 to 1,788 mg for Zn via immobilization in soil with AMDS amended, respectively. Overall, application of industrial by-products can be an environmentally-friendly way to remediate soil and(or) leachate contaminated with metal(loid)s in metal mine site.

  • The seasonal changes were evaluated in the soil microbial populations by selected media in an organic farming system (OFS) with no-till management compared to those in a conventional farming system (CFS) with tillage and synthetic amendments in a flooded paddy from 2009 to 2010. The populations of aerobic bacteria and fungi in the OFS were significantly higher than those in the CFS at the harvesting stages, whereas those of Gram-negative bacteria was significantly higher in the OFS than in the CFS before the submerging stages. In addition, populations of aerobic bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi tended to rapidly decreased after the submerging stages may be due to insufficient oxygen. Gram-negative bacteria should be considered as potential factor responsible for the microbial population differentiation observed between the OFS and the CFS in flooded paddy fields.

  • Streptomyces sampsonii KK1024 having strong chitinolytic activity was isolated from crab-shell rich soil at Muan, Jeolanamdo. The KK1024 produced chitinase, protease, gelatinase and lipase. When 50% of KK1024 culture broth was treated to juveniles and eggs of root-knot nematode, juvenile mortality at 3 days was 81.67% and egg hatch rate at 5 days was 2.00%. When $183.7{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of crude enzyme produced by KK1024 was treated, juvenile mortality at 3 days was 96.00% and egg hatch rate at 5 days was 5.33%. At 1% of butanol extract from KK1024, juvenile mortality was highest with 90.00% and egg hatch rate was lowest with 0%. The comparison of the effect of KK1024 culture broth with only medium, synthetic fertilizer, and commercial nematicide on tomato growth and nematode infection was examined in pot trials. KK1024 culture broth showed lower number of egg mass and gall in plant, and population of juveniles in soil compared with only medium and synthetic fertilizer treatment, but not in commercial nematicide. However, the highest shoot weight and length was discovered in KK1024 culture broth. These results suggest that Streptomyces sampsonii KK1024 producing lytic enzymes and nematicidal compounds can be one of candidates for biocontrol agents against root-knot nematodes.
