A Review on Monitoring the Everglades Wetlands in the Southern Florida Using Space-based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Observations

  • Space-based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations have been widely and successfully applied to acquire invaluable temporal and spatial information on wetlands, which are unique environments and regarded as important ecosystems. One of the best studied wetland area is Everglades, which is located in southern Florida, USA. As a World Heritage Site, the Everglades is the largest natural and subtropical wilderness in the United States. The Everglades wetlands have been threatened by anthropogenic activities such as urban expansion and agricultural development, as well as by natural processes, as sea level changes due to climate change. In order to conserve this unique wetland environment, various restoration plans have been implemented. In this review paper, we summarize the main studies using space-based SAR observations for monitoring the Everglades. The paper is composed of the following two sections: (1) review of backscattered amplitude analysis and observations, and (2) review of interferometric SAR (InSAR) analysis and applications. This study also provides an overview of a wetland InSAR technique and space-based SAR sensors. The goal of this review paper is to provide a comprehensive summary of space-based SAR monitoring of wetlands, using the Everglades wetlands as a case study.

A Galvanic Sensor for Monitoring the External and Internal Corrosion Damage of Buried Pipelines

  • In order to develop a new corrosion sensor for detecting and monitoring the external and internal corrosion damage of buried pipeline, the electrochemical property of sensors and the correlation of its output to corrosion rate of steel pipe, were evaluated by electrochemical methods in two soils of varying resistivity (5,000 ohm-cm, 10,000 ohm-cm) and synthetic tap water environments. In this paper, two types of galvanic probes were manufactured: copper-pipeline steel (Cu-CS) and stainless steel-pipeline steel (SS-CS). The corrosion behavior in synthetic groundwater and synthetic tap water for the different electrodes was investigated by potentiodynamic test. The comparison of the sensor output and corrosion rates revealed that a linear relationship was found between the probe current and the corrosion rates. In the soil resistivity of $5,000{\Omega}-cm$ and tap water environments, only the Cu-CS probe had a good linear quantitative relationship between the sensor output current and the corrosion rate of pipeline steel. In the case of $10,000{\Omega}-cm$, although the SS-CS probe showed a better linear correlation than that of Cu-CS probe, the Cu-CS probe is more suitable than SS-CS probe due to the high current output.

한국 근해에서의 실측 데이터를 이용한 합성 어퍼쳐 소나 실험에 관한 연구 (An Experimental Study on Synthetic Aperture Sonar under Korean Littoral Environment)

  • 물리적으로 제한된 길이의 어레이를 확장함으로써 소나 시스템의 표적 탐지 성능을 향상시키기 위한 합성 어퍼쳐 소나에 대한 실험을 하였다. 어퍼쳐 영역이나 빔 영역에서 어레이를 합성하는 기존의 실험에서는 어레이의 형상을 선형으로 가정하기 때문에 실제 상황과 오차가 발생하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 왜곡된 어레이의 형상을 추정하여 왜곡을 보상한 후에 어퍼쳐 영역에서 어레이를 합성하는 실험을 하였다. 실험 데이터로는 한국 근해에서 견인 어레이로부터 획득한 데이터를 이용하였으며 실측된 데이터만으로 중첩되는 부어레이 간의 시ㆍ공간적인 위상 차이를 보상함으로써 어레이 길이를 확장하였다. 실험 결과 합성에 의해서 방향 탐지 분해능이 향상되는 것을. 확인할 수 있었고, 5번 합성으로 3dB 빔폭이 약 70%줄어드는 결과를 얻었다.

석유화학계 기초화합물 제조시설과 합성수지 및 기타 플라스틱물질 제조시설의 폐수처리시설 BAT평가 (Assessment of Best Available Technology of Wastewater Treatment Facilities in Petrochemical Basic Compound Manufacturing and Plastics and Synthetic Resins Manufacturing)

  • The effluent limitations for individual industry based on the best available technology economically achievable (BAT) have been required to achieve effective regulation. BAT assessment criteria that are suitable for the circumstances of Korean industry were developed in the previous study. The criteria were applied to determine the BAT for petrochemical basic compound manufacturing (PBCM) and plastics and synthetic resins manufacturing (PSRM) industry. Wastewater discharged from the each category contains high concentration of COD and toluene. Eighteen sites were surveyed and wastewater qualities were analyzed. Six and two different technologies were applied to the PBCM and PSRM industry for the end-of-pipe treatment process, respectively. The technology candidates were evaluated in terms of environmental impacts, economically achievability, treatment performance and economical reasonability. As the result, the technology options: typical activated-sludge process + sand filtration + activated carbon adsorption (PBCM) and wet oxidation + chemical precipitation + typical activated-sludge process + chemical precipitation (PSRM) were selected as the BAT for each industry.

무기물계 폐기물로 합성한 제올라이트의 코발트, 니켈, 구리 이온의 회수 성능 (The Recovery Performance of Co, Ni, and Cu Ions Using Zeolites Synthesized from Inorganic Solid Wastes)

  • In this study, zeolites were synthesized by a fusion and a hydrothermal methods using a coal fly ash and a waste catalyst. The recovery performance of metal ions on the structure property of synthetic zeolites was evaluated as comparing the adsorption kinetics (Lagergen 2nd order model) and isotherm (Langmuir model) of $Co^{2+},\;Ni^{2+}$, and $Cu^{2+}$ ions. The synthetic zeolites (Z-C1 and Z-W5) were similarly assigned to XRD peaks in a reagent grade Na-A zeolite (Z-WK : $Na_{12}Al_{12}Si_{12}O_{48}\;27.4H_2O$). Adsorption rates of Z-W5 and Z-C1 were in the order of $Cu^{2+}\;>\;Co^{2+}\;>\;Ni^{2+}\;and\;Ni^{2+}\;>\;Cu^{2+}\;>\;Co^{2+}$, respectively. They had influenced upon structure properties of zeolite. Selectivities of metal ions and maximum equilibrium adsorption capacities, $q_{max}$, in Z-C1 and Z-W5 were in the order of $Ni^{2+}$ (127.9 mg/g) > $Cu^{2+}$ (94.7 mg/g) > $Co^{2+}$ (82.6 mg/g) and $Cu^{2+}$ (141.3 mg/g) > $Co^{2+}$ (122.2 mg/g) > $Ni^{2+}$ (87.6 mg/g), respectively. The results show that the synthetic zeolites, Z-C1 and Z-W5, are able to recover metal ions selectively in wastewater.

환경오염과 합성세제에 대한 소비생활 (Synthetic Detergent and our Daily Lives as Consumers against Environmental Pollution.)

  • Lately our environments have been destroyed by such new things as synthetic detergent. How to use detergent at home can be a decisive factor for decreasing water pollution because living sewage by using detergent at home is the main cause of water pollution. We consumers, therefore, should understand the relation between the chemical ingredients of detergent and water pollution and should choose detergent always taking the kinds of detergent, its washing pewer into consideration. We should also contribute to the protection of out environment by keeping the standard of using amount attached to the products.

  • 이번 발표에서는 복잡한 대상을 모의실험(시뮬레이션)할 때 필요한 복수의 모듈 사이의 상호작용과 협업을 돕기 위한 가상의 합성환경 (synthetic environments, SE)을 건설산업에 적용한 예인 건설 가상 환경 (Construction Synthetic Environments, CSE)에 대해 다루고 있다. 이를 위해 COSYE (Construction Systematic Environment- 건설분야 시스템적 환경 의 약자)라는 명칭의 소프트웨어 환경을 개발하여 캐나다 에드먼턴 (Edmonton, Canada)의 오수 터널 프로젝트의 시나리오 기반 분석 및 계획에 적용한 사례를 보여주고 있다.

  • Recently, the interest of the study about IGCC(Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle), one of New & Renewable Energy technologies, bas been increased due to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Low Carbon Green Growth policy, etc. Also, with this interest of IGCC, the study on the gas turbine utilizing the synthetic gas is performing actively. In the study of the gas turbine characteristic, the power performance and the combustion efficiency are mainly discussed and also the concern about the exhaust gas is being taken care of due to the increasing awareness of the environment. With this, we would like to go over the exhaust gas emission characteristic by the synthetic gas inflow in this test. In order to conduct such a test, we constructed a synthetic gas supplying system to supply the synthetic gases ($H_2$: hydrogen, $N_2$: nitrogen, CO: carbon monoxide, $CO_2$: carbon dioxide, and $H_2O$: steam) quantitatively and this combustion test was conducted by controlling the supplied synthetic gases artificially. The concentration of the exhaust gases appeared variously depending on the differences of the inflow nitrogen amount and the steam amount, whether or not the carbon dioxide flow in and so on. The results of the test can be able to be utilized for the IGCC study by understanding the exhaust gas emission characteristic of the coal gas turbine by synthetic gas composition.

간선임도와 작업임도를 고려한 복합임도망의 적정밀도 산정 (Computation of Optimum Synthetic Road Density for Main and Spur Forest Roads)

  • 본 연구는 효율적인 임내도로망 구축을 위한 정책적 기초자료를 제공하고자 산림청 산하 5개소의 임도시설시범단지를 대상으로 복합임도망의 적정밀도를 산정하였다. 그 결과, 복합임도망의 적정밀도는 10.1~15.9 m/ha이었으며, 단일 규격의 간선임도망은 8.4~12.4 m/ha로 나타났다. 이를 기준으로 임도개설비용을 추정해보면, 단일규격의 간선임도망에 비해 약 1~8% 낮게 측정된 반면, 임도밀도는 20~30%가량 증가하였다. 또한, 대상지의 생산예정재적과 집재비용이 증가함에 따라 복합임도망의 적정밀도도 증가하였으며, 특히 고규격의 간선임도 밀도가 급격히 증가하였다. 한편, 경사가 급한 지역일수록 저규격의 작업임도 밀도가 상대적으로 증가하는 경향을 보였다.

합성경량골재(SLA)를 사용한 경량콘크리트의 파괴, 역학적 특성 및 내구성 (The Fractural-Mechanical Properties and Durability of Lightweight Concrete Using the Synthetic Lightweight Aggregate)

  • 폐플라스틱과 fly ash를 건설분야에서 재활용하는 것은 환경오염의 방지와 함께 경제적인 건설 신소재를 개발할 수 있어 각종 환경규제 속에 대처할 수 있는 훌륭한 방안이다. 본 연구에서는 $12\%$ 탄소를 함유한 fly-ash와 폐플라스틱를 이용하여 합성경량골재를 제작하였다. 최대치수 9.5mm의 골재는 fly ash 함유량을 $0\%$, $35\%$, $80\%$ 으로 제조하였다. 팽창 점토 경량 골재와 보통 중량 골재를 비교군으로 사용하였다. 골재의 입도, 비중, 흡수율을 실험하였으며 골재종류별로 다섯 변수의 콘크리트 공시체를 제조하였다. 합성경량골재 콘크리트의 특성을 파악하기 위하여 밀도, 압축강도, 탄성계수, 할렬인장강도, 파괴인성, 파괴 에너지등을 구하였다. 또한 콘크리트 내구성을 알 수 있는 표면박리 저항성 실험을 하였다. 실험결과 압축강도와 인장강도는 보통중량 골재와 일반적인 점토 경량골재를 사용한 콘크리트 보다 합성경량골재의 경우가 더 낮았으나 상대적으로 우수한 파괴특성을 나타내었다. 합성경량골재 콘크리트는 상대적으로 낮은 압축 탄성계수를 가졌으나 높은 연성을 나타내었다. 합성경량골재의 av ash 함유량이 증가함에 따라, 콘크리트의 모든 특성이 향상되었다. fly ash 함유량 $80\%$의 합성경량 골재를 사용한 콘크리트가 표면박리 저항성이 가장 우수하였다.
