  • In this study, it is assumed that understanding the nature of science (NOS) would enhance students' performance of scientific inquiry in more authentic ways. The ultimate goal of this study is to suggest new models for developing scientific inquiry activities through understanding the NOS by linking the NOS with scientific inquiry. First, the various definitions and statements of the NOS are summarized, then the features of the developmental nature of scientific knowledge and the nature of scientific thinking based on the philosophy of science are reviewed, and finally a synthetic list of the elements of the NOS is proposed, consisting of three categories: the nature of scientific knowledge, the nature of scientific inquiry, and the nature of scientific thinking. This suggested synthetic list of the NOS is used to suggest a model of scientific inquiry through the understanding of the NOS. This list was designed to provide basic standards regarding the NOS as well as practical guidance for designing activities to improve students' understanding of the NOS.

  • Over the past decade or so, dramatic developments in our ability to experimentally determine the content and function of genomes have taken place. In particular, next-generation sequencing technologies are now inspiring a new understanding of bacterial transcriptomes on a global scale. In bacterial cells, whole-transcriptome studies have not received attention, owing to the general view that bacterial genomes are simple. However, several recent RNA sequencing results are revealing unexpected levels of complexity in bacterial transcriptomes, indicating that the transcribed regions of genomes are much larger and complex than previously anticipated. In particular, these data show a wide array of small RNAs, antisense RNAs, and alternative transcripts. Here, we review how current transcriptomics are now revolutionizing our understanding of the complexity and regulation of bacterial transcriptomes.

  • Impingement cooling utilizing synthetic jets is emerging as a popular cooling technique because of its high local cooling efficiency. The interaction between the vortex structure of the synthetic jet and the surface is crucial in understanding the mechanism of this technique. In this study, the impinging vortex structure and its advection are investigated by experiments with jet-to-surface spacing $2{\leq}H/D{\leq}7$, and synthetic jet Reynolds number $5120{\leq}Re{\leq}9050$. Using phase-locked particle image velocimetry, ensemble averaged (phase averaged) flow fields are obtained, and vortex identification and quantification techniques are applied. The shape, trajectory, and intensity change of the vortex are assessed. A sharp decline in the vortex intensity and the occurrence of a counter-rotating vortex at the impingement point are observed.

  • We introduce a method of identifying evidence of shocks in the X-ray emitting gas in clusters of galaxies. Using information from synthetic observations of simulated clusters, we do a blind search of the synthetic image plane. The locations of likely shocks found using this method closely match those of shocks identified in the simulation hydrodynamic data. Though this method assumes nothing about the geometry of the shocks, the general distribution of shocks as a function of Mach number in the cluster hydrodynamic data can be extracted via this method. Characterization of the cluster shock distribution is critical to understanding production of cosmic rays in clusters and the use of shocks as dynamical tracers.

  • The environment friendly calcareous deposit films were formed on steel plates by electrodeposition technique in natural seawater and synthetic solutions such as dissolved $\textrm{Mg}^{2+}$ and $\textrm{Ca}^{2+}$ ions at various potential conditions. The influence of potential conditions on composition ratio, structure and morphology of the electrodeposited films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) and X-ray diffractor (XRD). Accordingly, this study was provided a better understanding of the composition between the growth of $\textrm{Mg(OH)}_2$ and that of $\textrm{CaCO}_3$ during the formation of calcareous deposit films on steel substrate under cathodically electrodeposition in synthetic and natural seawater. The results showed that the formation of good overall calcareous deposited film in seawater can be achieved by controlling the Ca/Mg ratio according to interfacial pH with the effective use of the electro deposition technique.

  • Recently, the interest of the study about IGCC(Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle), one of New & Renewable Energy technologies, bas been increased due to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Low Carbon Green Growth policy, etc. Also, with this interest of IGCC, the study on the gas turbine utilizing the synthetic gas is performing actively. In the study of the gas turbine characteristic, the power performance and the combustion efficiency are mainly discussed and also the concern about the exhaust gas is being taken care of due to the increasing awareness of the environment. With this, we would like to go over the exhaust gas emission characteristic by the synthetic gas inflow in this test. In order to conduct such a test, we constructed a synthetic gas supplying system to supply the synthetic gases ($H_2$: hydrogen, $N_2$: nitrogen, CO: carbon monoxide, $CO_2$: carbon dioxide, and $H_2O$: steam) quantitatively and this combustion test was conducted by controlling the supplied synthetic gases artificially. The concentration of the exhaust gases appeared variously depending on the differences of the inflow nitrogen amount and the steam amount, whether or not the carbon dioxide flow in and so on. The results of the test can be able to be utilized for the IGCC study by understanding the exhaust gas emission characteristic of the coal gas turbine by synthetic gas composition.

  • Laboratory sorption isotherm batch studies have been attempted to elucidate interaction of synthetic pyrethroids (bifenthrin and permethrin) with sediments and their fractions. As a nonlinear isothermal model, the Freundlich equation was applied to sorption results obtained from sediments to investigate the relationship between synthetic pyrethroids and sediments containing different amounts of organic carbon. Results demonstrated that the sorption capabilities of bifenthrin and cis- and trans-permethrin was in the order of bifenthrin, cis-permethrin and trans-permethrin, respectively, indicating that adsorbed bifenthrin was the most stable followed by cis- and trans-permethrin in all sediments. Their sorption capability was closely related to organic carbon contents in sediments. Higher sorption was observed in sediments containing higher organic carbon contents. Sorption study extended into the fractions, clay and humic acids, extracted from a sediment, indicated that higher sorption capacity in humic acids occurred than in the clay of both examined bifenthrin and permethrin. This study demonstrates the sorption of synthetic pyrethroids with sediments, and will help in the understanding of the transport and fate of synthetic pyrethroids existing in field sediments.

  • As currently conducted, standard rodent bioassays do not provide sufficient information to assess carcinogenic risk to humans at doses thousands of times below the maximum tolerated dose. Recent analyses indicate that measures of carcinogenic potency from these tests are restricted to a narrow range about the maximum tolerated dose and that information on shape of the dose-response is limited in experiments with only two doses and a control. Extrapolation from high to low doses should be based on an understanding of the mechanisms of carcinogenesis. We have postulated that administration of the maximum tolerated dose can increase mitogenesis which, in turn. increases rates of mutagenesis and, thus, carcinogenesis. The animal data are consistent with this mechanism, because about half of all chemicals tested are indeed rodent carcinogens, and about 40% of the positives are not detectably mutagenic. Thus, at low doses where cell killing does not occur, the hazards to humans of rodent carcinogens may be much lower than commonly assumed. In contrast, for high-dose exposures in the workplace, assessment of hazard requires comparatively little extrapolation. Nevertheless. permitted workplace exposures are sometimes close to the tumorigenic dose-rate in animal tests. Regulatory policy to prevent human cancer has primarily addressed synthetic chemicals, yet similar proportions of natural chemicals and synthetic chemicals test positive in rodent studies as expected from an understanding of toxicological defenses, and the vast proportion of human exposures are to natural chemicals. Thus, human exposures to rodent carcinogens are common. The natural chemicals are the control to evaluate regulatory strategies, and the possible hazards from synthetic chemicals should be compared to the possible hazards from natural chemicals. Qualitative extrapolation of the carcinogenic response between species has been investigated by comparing two closely related species: rats and mice. Overall predictive values provide moderate confidence in interspecies extrapolation; however, knowing that a chemical is positive at any site in one species gives only about a 50% chance that it will be positive at the same site in the other species.
