  • Current acceptable methods for promoting periodontal regeneration are based on removal of diseased soft tissue. root treatment, guided tissue regeneration, introduction of new graft materials and biological mediators. Insulin-like growth factor-I(IGF-I) and Platelet-derived growth factor-BB(PDGF-BB), the members of the polypeptuyde growth factor family have been reported as the biological mediators which regulate a variety cellular matrix biologic activities of wound healing process including the cell proliferation, migration and extracellular matrix synthesis. The purposes of this study is to evaluate the combination effects of IGF-I and PDGF-BB on the cellular activity of the periodontal ligament cells to act as a regeneration promoting agent of periodontal tissue. Human periodontal ligament cells were prepared from the first premolar tooth extracted for the orthodontic treatment and were cultured in DMEM containing 10% FBS at the $37^{\circ}C$, 5% CO2 incubator. Author measured the DNA synthetic activity, and total protein, collagen and noncollagenous protein synthetic activities according to the concentration of 10,100ng/ml IGF-I and1,10 ng/ml PDGF-BB in combination. The results were as follows: Significantly increased in the 1 ng/ml PDGF-BB alone compared to the 10 ng/ml PDGF-BB alone(P<0.01) and in the 1 ng/ml PDGF-BB and 10, 100ng/ml IGF-I in combination compared to the 1 ng/ml PDGF-BB alone(P<0.05, P<0.0l). The synthetic activity of the total protein and collagen is significantly increased like to the synthetic activity of the DNA(P<0.05). The synthetic activity of the noncollagenous protein is increased according to the concentration of IGF_I, but not statistically statistically significant(P>0.05). The percent of the collagen is significantly in the 1ng/ml PDGF-BB and 10ng/ml IGF-I in combination compared to the 1ng/ml PDGF-BB alone(P<0.05) and in the 10ng/ml IGF-I in combination compared to the 10ng/ml PDGF-BB alone(P<0.05). The synthetic activity of the DNA is In conclusions, the percent study shows that PDGF-BB and IGF-I in combination have a potentiality to enhance the DNA synthesis and the total protein and collagen synthesis of The periodontal ligament cells, especially it is more significant in the low concentration of PDGF-BB compared to the high one. Thus, the PDGF-BB and IGF-I in combination may have important roles in promotion of periodontal litgment healing, and consequently, may useful for clinical application in periodontal regenerative procedures.

  • Lactococcal cells are nutritionally fastidious and thus, generally cultured either in milk or M17 medium (Terzaghi and Sandine, 1975). In this study, Lactococcus cremoris wild-type (KH) and its lessproteolytic mutant (KHA1) cells were grown on the M17 medium or with modified M17 medium by replicated parallel experiments. The modified M17 medium had the same composition as M17 medium, except that lactose was replaced by glucose. Analyses of culture-broth samples, in which the M17 and the modified M17 media were used, were conducted by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). But, working with these media created noisy problems in analyses of samples. Therefore, a new semi-synthetic medium was developed on the basis of nutritional requirements (Morishita et al., 1981). The composition of the semi-synthetic medium determined on the basis of the nutritional requirements and the composition of milk, is presented in Table 1. The composition of M17 medium is also presented and compared in the table. L. cremoris KH and KHA1 cells were grown again on the new synthetic medium containing glucose or lactose. The broth samples were then drawn and analyzed by HPLC. Clearer separations of fermented products were achieved from the new medium than those with the M17 and the modified M17 media. In comparison with the M17 or the modified M17 media, growth on the new medium was good (Kim et al, 1993). Additional fermentations were also carried out at a controlled pH of 7.0, where enhanced growth of lactococcal cells was obtained. In the fermentations, samples were also analyzed for the concentrations of sugar and lactic acid. The results showed that the new synthetic medium was as good as or better than the M 17 and the modified M 17 media. This is because casein hydrolysate in the synthetic medium provided a ready supply of amino acids and peptides for L. cremoris KH and KHA1 cells. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) including Lactococcal cells have been known to be an effective means of preserving foods, at the same time as giving particular tastes in fields of dairy products. LAB also have always occupied an important place in the technology of sea products, and marine LAB have known to be present in traditional fermented products (Ohhira et al, 1988). To apply the new synthetic medium to marine LAB, two different LAB were isolated from pickled anchovy and pollacks caviar and were grown on the new media in which various concentrations of NaCl $(3, 5, 7 and 10\%)$ added. They were also grown on the medium solution in natural seawater $(35\%o\;salinity)$ and on the solution of natural seawater itself, too. As seen in Fig. 1, Marine LAB were grown best on the synthetic medium solution in natural seawater and the higher concentrations of NaCl were added to the medium, the longer lag-phase of growth profile appeared. Marine LAB in natural seawater were not grown well. From these results, the synthetic medium seems good to cultivate cells which are essential to get salted fish aged. In this study, it showed that the new synthetic medium provided adequate nutrition for L. cremoris KH and KHA1 cells, which have been used as cheese starters (Stadhouders et al, 1988). Using this new medium, the acid production capability of starter cultures could be also measured quantitatively. Thus, this new medium was inferior to the M17 or the modified M17 medium in culturing the cheese starters and in measuring fermentation characteristics of the starter cells. Moreover, this new medium found to be good for selected and well-identified marine LAB which are used in rapid fermentations of low-salted fish.

  • KOMPSAT-5 is the first satellite in Korea equipped with X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) instrument and has been operated since August 2013. KOMPSAT-5 is used to monitor the global environment according to its observation purpose and the availability of KOMPSAT-5 is also highlighted as the need of high resolution wind data for investigating the coastal region. However, the previous study for the validation of wind derived from KOMPSAT-5 showed that the accuracy is lower than that of other SAR satellites. Therefore, in this study, we developed the correction equation of normalized radar cross section (NRCS or backscattering coefficient) for improvement of wind from the KOMPSAT-5 and validated the effect of the equation using the in-situ measurement of ocean buoys. Theoretical estimated NRCS and observed NRCS from KOMPSAT-5 showed linear relationship with incidence angle. Before applying the correction equation, the accuracy of the estimated wind speed showed the relatively high root-mean-square errors (RMSE) of 2.89 m s-1 and bias of -0.55 m s-1. Such high errors were significantly reduced to the RMSE of 1.60 m s-1 and bias of -0.38 m s-1 after applying the correction equation. The improvement effect of the correction equation showed dependency relying on the range of incidence angle.

  • The high-flux advanced neutron application reactor (HANARO) is a multi-purpose research reactor at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). HANARO has been used in scientific and industrial research and developments. Therefore, stable operation is necessary for national science and industrial prospects. This study proposed an anomaly detection system based on deep learning, that supports the stable operation of HANARO. The proposed system collects multiple sensor data, displays system information, analyzes status, and performs anomaly detection using deep autoencoder. The system comprises communication, visualization, and anomaly-detection modules, and the prototype system is implemented on site in 2021. Finally, an analysis of the historical data and synthetic anomalies was conducted to verify the overall system; simulation results based on the historical data show that 12 cases out of 19 abnormal events can be detected in advance or on time by the deep learning AD model.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the positive or negative effects of 5-aminolevulinic acid(ALA) on the growth of several crops and weeds, by applying a seed soaking treatment, foliar treatment, and application timing, while comparing biological activity between ALA produced by chemical synthesis (Synthetic-ALA) and extracellularly-accumulated ALA by overexpressing the hemeA gene isolated from Bradyrhizobium japonicum(Bio-ALA). Seed soaking treatment of ALA in barley (five cultivars) and wheat (five cultivars) had not shown positive effects at lower concentrations, 0.05 to 0.5 mM as well as negative effects at higher concentrations, 1 to 30 mM. In rice, there also was no positive effect by seed soaking treatment of ALA at lower concentrations, although the rice became damaged by an application of 5 and 10 mM ALA. Growth in barley cultivars, Ganghossalbori, Naehanssalbori, Songhakbori, Saessalbori, and Daehossalbori were increased up to 14%, 19-51 %, 17-64%, 18-23%, and 22-38% by ALA foliar application at lower concentrations, 0.05 to 0.5 mM, respectively. On the other hand, the growth in barley cultivars was inhibited by ALA foliar application at higher concentrations. Barley responded more positively to ALA foliar application than wheat and rice. The growth stimulation caused by ALA seed soaking treatment was less than by ALA foliar treatment. ALA treatment at the 1.5-leaf stage increased growth of barley by 19-58%, while pretreatment to seeds, post-emergence treatment at 3 days after seeding, 3-leaf stages, and 5-leaf stages had not shown positive effects. Thus, the positive effects of ALA on barley were dependent greatly upon the timing of application and its concentration. Monocots weeds were more sensitive to ALA foliar treatment than dicotyledonous weeds. A monocot weed, Setaria viridis L. was the most susceptible plant to ALA while a dicotyledonous weed, Plantago asiatica L. was the most tolerant. No significant difference in biological activity between bio-ALA and synthetic ALA on barley, wheat, rice, and weed, Ixeris dentate tested was observed. Thus, ALA produced by microorganisms would be a potent substance to be used effectively in agricultural production.

  • Two different types of chemical manipulations of dobutamine were investigated in order to develop novel, improved cardiotonic drugs. Three new analogues of carbostyril, in which the m-hydroxy group of dobutamine was isosterically modified with an amide type carbostyril system, were synthesized from, ${\rho}-methoxyphenethylamine$ via multi-steps. Two analogues of (2'-aminoethyl)-1-hydroxy-2-pyridone system which has isosteric structural similarity with dopamine without having the COMT vulnerable m-hydroxy group were synthesized via 12 synthetic steps. Their biological stabilities in various media and inotropic activities were evaluated.
