We describe the design of a soft X-ray grating monochromator for synchrotron radiation in the photon energy range 300~1200eV. We investigate the optimum condition in optical parameters of CEM (cylindrical element monochromator), whose performance is well known by Dragon beam line installed recently at Brookhaven National Laboratory by C. T. Chen, fitting the parameter of PLS (Pohang Light Source) storage ring construction.

Single-crystal diamond obtained by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) exhibits great potential for use in next-generation power devices. Low defect density is required for the use of such power devices in high-power operations; however, plastic deformation and lattice strain increase the dislocation density during diamond growth by CVD. Therefore, characterization of the dislocations in CVD diamond is essential to ensure the growth of high-quality diamond. In this work, we analyze the characteristics of the dislocations in CVD diamond through synchrotron white beam X-ray topography. In estimate, many threading edge dislocations and five mixed dislocations were identified over the whole surface.

This study investigated the feasibility of synthesizing GNPs using synchrotron radiation X-ray for use as a radiosensitizer in radiotherapy, and examined the morphology of the GNPs. Different concentration ratios of 4-mM gold precursor aqueous solution and 4-mM $NaHCO_3$ were mixed. This gold precursor aqueous solution was continuously irradiated with synchrotron radiation in the 4B X-ray microdiffraction beamline of Pohang Light Source (PLS)-II in Korea. The SEM, EDS, TEM, and XRD spectra of the GNPs synthesized using the synchrotron radiation were investigated. The GNPs synthesized using the synchrotron radiation were nanocrystals predominantly in the (111) direction of the face-centered cubic structure. We found that the shape of the gold nanoparticles was icosahedron at the molar concentrations of 0.25 mM:0.25 mM and 0.5 mM:0.5 mM mixed with 4 mM $HAuCl_4{\cdot}3H_2O$ and 4 mM $NaHCO_3$ solutions.

It is important to measure precisely the size and velocity of micro-bubbles used in various field. The synchrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique was employed to measure the size and velocity of micro-bubbles moving in an opaque tube simultaneously. Phase contrast images were obtained at interfaces of micro-bubbles between water and air due to their different refractive indices. The X-ray micro-imaging technique was found to measure an optical fiber with an accuracy of 0.2%. Micro-bubbles of 20∼60$\mu\textrm{m}$ diameter moving upward in an opaque tube (${\Phi}$=2.7mm) were tested to measure bubble size and up-rising velocity. For DI water, the measured velocity of micro-bubbles is nearly proportional to the square of bubble size, agreed well with the theoretical result. In addition, the synchrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique can measure accurately the size and velocity of several overlapped micro-bubbles.
The structure and layer distribution of cadmium arachidate Langmuir-Blodgett film were analyzed by the small angle X-ray reflectivity measurements using synchrotron radiation. Y-to X type transition was ocurred during the 39th passage of deposition of cadmium arachidate. Based on the measurement of the consumed area of the monolayer, it was determined that about 27.5 layer was deposited. Using the synchrotron X-ray, the reflectivity profile of cadmium arachidate LB film over the wide range of grazing angle was obtained. The X-ray reflectivity profile was analyzed using the recursion formula. By fitting the location and dispersion of the subsidiary maxima between the Bragg peaks of the measured reflectivity profile with that of the calculated reflectivity profile, the average thickness and the distribution of layer thickness were evaluated. The genetic algorithm was adopted to the fitting of reflectivity profile to evaluate the optimum value of the number distribution of layer. Based on the morphology measurement with an atomic force microscopy (AFM), the domain structure and mean roughness of LB films were obtained. The mean roughness value calculated based on the number of layer distribution obtained from the measurement by AFM is consistent with that obtained from X-ray reflectivity analysis.

Water management is crucial for the performance, durability, and stability of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs). Due to its importance, various methods for visualizing PEMFC's internal water distribution have been adapted to study and manage water within the cells. However, these methods often require large facilities, leading to high costs and significant barriers to entry. This study addresses these challenges by using a commercial Radiation (X-ray) Generator (RG) for internal water distribution visualization and comparing the results with synchrotron X-ray data from the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) 9D beamline. Despite the lower resolution and potential beam distortion challenges, the RG shows promise for PEMFC water distribution visualization, suggesting the need for further research to refine water attenuation coefficients and build-up factors for improved measurement accuracy.

The solidification sequence and formation of intermetallic phase of Fe-rich Al-Si-Cu alloy were investigated by using real-time imaging of synchrotron X-ray radiation. Effects of cooling rate during uni-directional solidification on the resultant solidification behavior was also studied in a specially constructed vacuum chamber in the SPring-8 facility. The series of radiographic images were complementarily analyzed with conventional analysis of OM and SEM/EDX for phase identification. Detailed solidification sequence and formation mechanisms of various phases were discussed based on real-time image analysis. The growth rates of $\alpha$-AlFeMnSi and ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ were measured in order to understand the growth behavior of each phase. It is suggested that real-time imaging technique can be a powerful tool for the precise understanding of solidification behavior of various industrial materials.
The thermal transitions of a nylon 6/layered silicate nanocomposite were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The drawn film of the nylon 6/layered silicate nanocomposite typically showed three endotherms in the DSC thermogram; a very broad endotherm at $\sim120^{\circ}C(T_{1})$, a double-melting endotherm at $\sim215^{\circ}C(T_{2})$, and a high temperature endotherm at $\sim240^{\circ}C(T_{3})$. The drawn film of the nylon 6/ layered silicate nanocomposite was comprised of a mixture of the $\alpha and \gamma$ forms, with $the \alpha form$ being generated by drawing the pressed film having $the \gamma form$. The melting and crystallization of the crystals were observed at the above thermal transitions during the heating experiment performed at the Pohang X-ray synchrotron radiation source (4C2). The newly generated form was meta-stable and melted $at {\sim}T_{1}$. The double-melting $at {\sim}T_{2}$ was due to the exothermic crystallization of $the \alpha form$ during the main endothermic melting of $the \gamma form$. $The \alpha form$ crystallized $at {\sim}T_{2}$ and melted $at {\sim}T_{3}$.
For visual inspection-based wood identification, optical microscopy techniques typically require a relatively large sample size, and a scanning electron microscope requires a clean surface. These novel techniques experience limitations for objects with highly limited sampling capabilities such as important and registered wooden cultural properties. Synchrotron X-ray microtomography (SR-µCT) has been suggested as an effective alternative to avoid such limitations and various other imaging issues. In this study, four pieces of wood fragments from wooden members used in the Manseru pavilion of Bongjeongsa temple in Andong, Korea, wereused for identification. Three-dimensional microstructural images were reconstructed from these small wood samples using SR-µCT at SPring-8. From the analysis of the reconstructed images, the samples were identified as Zelkova serrata, Quercus sect. Cerris, and Pinus koraiensis. The images displayed sufficient spatial resolution to clearly observe the anatomical features of each species. In addition, the three-dimensional imaging allowed unlimited image processing.

The phase transformation of Sn-Pb-Bi solder for photovoltaic ribbon during soldering was studied using real-time synchrotron x-ray scattering. At room temperature, Sn and Pb crystal phases in the solder existed separately. By heating to $92^{\circ}C$, a new PbBi alloy crystal phase was formed, which grew further up to $160^{\circ}C$. The Sn crystal phase first started to melt at $160^{\circ}C$, and was mostly melted at $165^{\circ}C$. In contrast, the Pb and PbBi crystal phases started to melt at $165^{\circ}C$, and were mostly melted at $170^{\circ}C$. The useful result was obtained, that the solder's melting temperature decreased from $183^{\circ}C$ to $170^{\circ}C$ by addition of a small amount of Bi atoms to the eutectic Sn62-Pb38 (wt%) solder. Our study first revealed the detailed in-situ phase transformation of Sn-Pb-Bi solder during heating to the eutectic temperature. Considering the results of peel strength and hardness, adding 1 wt% of Bi atoms to the Sn62-Pb38 (wt%) solder produced an appropriate composition.
