  • In this paper, maximum efficiency operation of two types of permanent magnet synchronous motor drives, namely; surface type permanent magnet synchronous machine (SPMSM) and interior type permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM), are investigated. The efficiency of both drives is maximized by minimizing copper and iron losses. Loss minimization is implemented using flux weakening. A neural network controller (NNC) is designed for each drive, to achieve loss minimization at difffrent speeds and load torque values. Data for training the NNC are obtained through off-line simulations of SPMSM and IPMSM at difffrent operating conditions. Accuracy and fast response of each NNC is proved by applying sudden changes in speed and load and tracking the UC output. The drives'efHciency obtained by flux weakening is compared with the efficiency obtained when setting the d-axis current component to zero, while varying the angle of advance "$\vartheta$" of the PWM inverter supplying the PMSM drive. Equal efficiencies are obtained at diffErent values of $\vartheta$, derived to be function of speed and load torque. A NN is also designed, and trained to vary $\vartheta$ following the derived control law. The accuracy and fast response of the NN controller is also proved.so proved.

  • This paper investigates an improved stator flux linkage observer for sensorless permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives using a voltage-based flux linkage model and an adaptive sliding mode variable structure. We propose a new observer design that employs an improved sliding mode reaching law to achieve better estimation accuracy. The design includes two models and two adaptive estimating laws, and we illustrate that the design is stable using the Popov hyper-stability theory. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed estimator accurately calculates the speed, the stator flux linkage, and the resistance while overcoming the shortcomings of traditional estimators.

  • This paper presents a simple approach for improving the performance of back-electromotive force (back-EMF)-estimation-based sensorless drives for surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSM). Similar to conventional approaches, a hypothetical d-q synchronous reference frame model of SPMSM is employed in the proposed approach to estimate the back-EMFs. This approach also employs a dual phase locked loop structure to compensate for the effect of the dead time and parameter uncertainty of the inverter on the estimated back-EMFs. The proposed algorithm is validated by conducting experiments.

  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications. • This paper deals with a precise position synchronous control of two axes rotating systems by a cooperative control method. The system's dynamics including motor drives described by a motor circuit equation and Newton's kinetic formulation about rotating system. Current and speed controllers are designed very simply by conventional PID control law. Also, position synchronous controller designed to minimize position errors according to integration of speed errors between two motors. Then, the proposed control enables the distributed drives by a software control algorithm to behave in a way as if they are mechanically hard coupled in axes. Finally, the validity of the proposed system is confirmed through some simulations and experiments.

  • In this paper, a direct torque control algorithm with novel duty cycle-based modulation is proposed for permanent magnet synchronous motor drives fed by neutral-point clamped three-level inverters. Compared with the standard DTC, the proposed algorithm can suppress steady-state torque ripples as well as ensure neutral-point potential balance and smooth vector switching. A unified torque/flux evaluation table with multiple voltage vectors and precise control levels is established and used in this method. This table can be used to evaluate the effects of duty-cycle vectors on torque and flux directly, and the elements of the table are independent of the motor parameters. Consequently, a high number of appropriate voltage vectors and their corresponding duty cycles can be selected as candidate vectors to reduce torque ripples by looking up the table. Furthermore, small vectors are incorporated into the table to ensure the neutral-point potential balance with the numerous candidate vectors. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm are verified by both simulations and experiments.

  • This paper presents a sliding mode observer for the sensorless control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives. The sliding mode observer has been presented as a robust estimation method. Most of these previous works, however, were not for an interior PMSM (IPMSM), but for a non-salient pole PMSM and its observer design is conducted in the stationary reference frame. Thus, in this paper, we investigate the design of a sliding mode observer and its driving characteristics for an IPMSM. The proposed sliding mode observer is designed in the rotating reference frame, and good drive performance is achieved even when the observer parameters are mismatched with those of an actual motor. The proposed method is applied to a 600W IPMSM, and, then, the measurement results are presented.

  • This paper introduces a virtual signal injected maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control strategy for direct-torque-controlled five-phase interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives. The key of the proposed method is that a high frequency signal is injected virtually into the stator flux linkage. Then the responding stator current is calculated and regulated to compensate the amplitude of the flux linkage. This is done according to the relationship between the stator current and the stator flux linkage. Since the proposed method does not inject any real signals into the motor, it does not cause any of the problems associated with high-frequency signals, such as additional copper loss and extra torque ripple. Simulation and experimental results are offered to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents an improved torque predictive control (TPC) for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) using an indirect matrix converter (IMC). The IMC has characteristics such as a high power density and sinusoidal waveforms of the input-output currents. Additionally, this configuration does not have any DC-link capacitors. Due to these advantages of the IMC, it is used in various application field such as electric vehicles and railway cars. Recently, research on various torque control methods for PMSM drives using an IMC is being actively pursued. In this paper, an improved TPC method for PMSM drives using an IMC is proposed. In the improved TPC method, the magnitudes of the voltage vectors applied to control the torque and flux of the PMSM are adjusted depending on the PMSM torque control such as the steady state and transient response. Therefore, it is able to reduce the ripples of the output current and torque in the low-speed and high-speed load ranges. Additionally, the improved TPC can improve the dynamic torque response when compared with the conventional TPC. The effectiveness of the improved TPC method is verified by experimental results.
