This paper describes a modeling of a FACTS(Flexible AC Transmission System) device, namely, SSSC(Static Synchronous Series Compensator) model. The SSSC, a solid-state voltage source inverter coupled with a transformer, is connected in series with a transmission line. SSSC provides controllable compensating voltage, which is in quadrature with the line current, over an capacitive and an inductive range, independently of the magnitude of the line current. This SSSC model is obtained from the injection model for series connected VSC(Voltage Source Converter) by adding a constraint that the injected voltage should be in quadrature with the line current. The paper discusses the basic operating and performance characteristics of the SSSC, and power flow control in power system.

The mechanical parts of small windp ower generator less than 10kW are manufactured in the form of removing most of the accelerators. The braking system to protect blade from damages caused by high wind speed is manufactured in a manner having apparatus system(furling), manual brake or no brake. This study is on braking system in small size wind power generator, and carried out survey as following steps by applying electric braking system which uses armature reaction. We explained the principle of electric braking system and the principle of existing braking system. Also, this paper interpreted short circuit current through open circuit and short circuit, as well as checking brake system's action using armature reaction with real construction of control device.

This paper proposes a new compensation algorithm for the current measurement errors in a DFIG (Doubly Fed Induction Generator). Generally, current measurement path with current sensors and analog devices has non-ideal factors like offset and scaling errors. As a result, the dq-axis currents of the synchronous reference frame have one and two times ripple components of the slip frequency. In this paper, the main concept of the proposed algorithm is implemented by integrating the 3-phase rotor currents into the stationary reference frame to compensate for the measured current ripples in a DFIG. The proposed algorithm has several beneficial features: easy implementation, less computation time, and robustness with regard to variations in the electrical parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by several experiments.
This paper studies the performances of five typical Phase-locked Loops (PLLs) for distorted and unbalanced grid, which are the Decoupled Double Synchronous Reference Frame PLL (DDSRF-PLL), Double Second-Order Generalized Integrator PLL (DSOGI-PLL), Double Second-Order Generalized Integrator Frequency-Lock Loop (DSOGI-FLL), Double Inverse Park Transformation PLL (DIPT-PLL) and Complex Coefficient Filter based PLL (CCF-PLL). Firstly, the principles of each method are meticulously analyzed and their unified small-signal models are proposed to reveal their interior relations and design control parameters. Then the performances are compared by simulations and experiments to investigate their dynamic and steady-state performances under the conditions of a grid voltage with a negative sequence component, a voltage drop and a frequency step. Finally, the merits and drawbacks of each PLL are given. The compared results provide a guide for the application of current control, low voltage ride through (LVRT), and unintentional islanding detection.
This paper presents a new control approach for designing a coordinated controller for static VAR compensator system. A SVC constructed by a Fixed Capacitor and a Thyristor Controlled Reactor is designed and implemented to improve the damping of a synchronous generator, as well as controlling the system voltage. A design of linear quadratic controller based on optimal controller depends on choosing weighting matrices. A coordinated optimal controller is achieved by minimizing a quadratic performance index using dynamic programming techniques. The selection of weighting matrices is usually carried out by trial and error which is not a trivial problem. We proposed a efficient method using GA of finding weighting matrices for optimal control law. Thus, we prove the usefulness of proposed method to improve the stability of single machine-infinite bus with SVC system.

This paper presents an comparative study on the effect of STATCOM and UPFC to the power system static analysis. The effect of STATCOM can be analyzed with PSS/E program which is generally used in power system analysis, while UPFC model for static analysis is not provided yet. Thus, UPFC is equivalently represented as a synchronous condenser and load, while the active and reactive power of the specific transmission line and the voltage of the bus is controlled appropriately. This procedure is implemented by IPLAN which is an external macro program of PSS/E. The simulation results show that UPFC is more effective to control the bus voltage than STATCOM, because UPFC can control not only the bus voltage where the parallel inverter is installed but also the active and reactive power flow in the transmission line where the series inverter is installed.
Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT) is scheduled to be launched by TAURUS launch vehicle in November, 1999. Tracking, Telemetry and Command(TT&C) operation and the flight dynamics support should be performed for the successful Launch and Early Orbit Phase(LEOP) operation. After the first contact of the KOMPSAT spacecraft, initial orbit determination using ground based tracking data should be performed for the acquisition of the orbit. Although the KOMPSAT is planned to be directly inserted into the Sun- synchronous orbit of 685 km altitude, the orbit maneuvers are required fur the correction of the launch vehicle dispersion. Flight dynamics support such as orbit determination and maneuver planning will be performed by using KOMPSAT Mission Analysis and Planning Subsystem(MAPS) in KOMPSAT Mission Control Element(MCE). The KOMPSAT MAPS have been jointly developed by Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute(ETRI) and Hyundai Space & Aircraft Company(HYSA). The KOMPSAT MCE was installed in Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) site for the KOMPSAT operation. In this paper, the orbit determination and maneuver planning are introduced and simulated for the KOMPSAT spacecraft in LEOP operation. Initial orbit determination using short arc tracking data and definitive orbit determination using multiple passes tracking data are performed. Orbit maneuvers for the altitude correction and inclination correction are planned for achieving the final mission orbit of the KOMPSAT.
The KOMPSAT, which is scheduled to be launched by Taurus launch vehicle in late November of 1999, will be in a sun-synchronous orbit with an altitude of 685km, eccentricity of 0.001, inclination of 98deg and local time of ascending node of 10:50 a.m. Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute and Daewoo Heavy Industry had jointly developed a KOMPSAT Simulator as a component of the KOMPSAT Mission Control Element. The MCE had been delivered to Korea Aerospace Research Institute for the KOMPSAT ground operation. It is being used for training of KOMPSAT ground station personnel. Each of satellite subsystems and space environment were mathematically modeled in the simulator. To verify the overall function of KOMPSAT simulator, a Launch and Early Orbit Phase(LEOP) operation simulations have been performed. The simulator had been verified through various tests such as functional level test, subsystem test, interface test, system test, and acceptance test. In this paper, simulation results for LEOP operations to verify flight software adapted into simulator, satellite subsystem models and environment models are presented.

Asynchronous sequential machines, or clockless logic circuits, have several advantages over synchronous machines such as fast operation speed, low power consumption, etc. In this paper, we propose a novel robust controller for input/output asynchronous sequential machines with uncertain state transitions. Due to model uncertainties or inner failures, the state transition function of the considered asynchronous machine is not completely known. In this study, we present a formulation to model this kind of asynchronous machines ana using generalized reachability matrices, we address the condition for the existence of an appropriate controller such that the closed-loop behavior matches that of a prescribed model. Based on the previous research results, we sketch design procedure of the proposed controller and analyze the stable-state operation of the closed-loop system.
High wind penetration might cause the frequency stability problem because a wind power plant (WPP) is operating in a maximum power tracking mode to extract the maximal energy from wind and thus does not react to the system frequency variation. Therefore, the system operators encourage a WPP to participate in frequency control, which includes inertia/orl and primary control. The frequency support capability of a WPP depends on the amount of kinetic energy (KE) and reserve. This paper formulates an optimization problem to maximize KE while retaining the required reserve. The proposed optimization problem would allow wind generators (WGs) with a smaller wind speed to retaine more KE. The performance of the proposed optimization problem was investigated in a 100-MW WPP consisting of 20 units of 5-MW permanent magnet synchronous generators using an EMTP-RV simulator. The results show that the proposed optimization problem successfully improves the frequency nadir more than a conventional reserve allocation that distributes WGs proportional to the current output.
