  • AC PDP has disadvantages that power consumption and sustain voltage are high. An energy recovery circuit for AC PDPs with reduced sustain voltage was proposed to solve these disadvantages. However, the circuit has disadvantage that the switching elements are performed hard switching at the start point of discharge and sustaining region. The reason is that the panel voltage is lower than sustain voltage at that point. In this paper, we propose the improved driving method that switching devices are operated with ZVS by using CIM(Current Infection Method) also at that point. CIM region is designed by theoretical circuit analysis. Finally, the validity of the proposed driving method is verified by the simulations and experimentation.

  • A novel zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) push-pull forward converter with a parallel resonant network is presented in this paper. The novel topology can provide a releasing loop for the energy storage in a leakage inductor for the duration of the power switching by the resonant capacitors paralleled with the primary windings of the transformer. Then the transformer leakage inductor is utilized to be resonant with the parallel capacitor, and the ZVS operation is achieved. This converter exhibits many advantages such as lower duty-cycle losses, limited peak voltage across the rectifier diodes and a higher efficiency. Furthermore, the operating principles and key problems of the converter design are analyzed in detail, and the ZVS conditions are derived. A 500W experimental converter prototype has been built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter, and its maximum efficiency reaches 94.8%.

  • In the past, the PWM converter had a large switching loss by hard switching and difficult to high frequency operation. The resonance converter to decrease the switching loss and EMI is required the frequency control and needed to reduce the voltage or current stress at each parts. So, this paper propose the 3-phase boost converter and the method to compensated input power factor by control the amplitude - an instantaneous value of the DC inductor current -and control the switching frequency that a modulation error by the ripple of the DC inductor current. The proposed 3-phase PWM boost converter of single phase control type can takes higher capacity and compensate the power factor by using Feed back controller at each phase for the existing 3-phase bridge rectifier type. Moreover the 3-phase full bridge type using the rectifier at each 3-phase circuit will be small size reactor and compensate input power factor by minimize harmonic components of each phase.

  • A torque ripple reduction technique of direct torque control(DTC) for high power induction motors driven by 3-level inverters with the inverter switching frequency limited around 0.5-1.0kHz level is presented. It is noted that conventional DTC algorithms to reduce torque ripple are devised for applications with relatively high switching frequency above 2-3kHz. Such conventional algorithms can not accomplish satisfactory torque ripple reduction for 3-level inverter systems with lower switching frequency. A new DTC algorithm, especially for low switching frequency inverter system, illustrates relatively reduced torque ripple characteristics all over the operating speed region. Simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

  • In this paper, an efficient switching pattern to equalize the size of transformer is proposed for a multi-level inverter employing cascaded transformers. It is based on the prior selected harmonic elimination PWM(SHEPWM) method. Because the maximum magnetic flux imposed on each transformer becomes exactly equal each to each, all transformers can be designed with the same size regardless of their position. Therefore, identical full-bridge inverter units can be utilized, thus improving modularity and manufacturability. The fundamental idea of the proposed switching pattern is illustrated and then analyzed theoretically. The validity of the proposed switching strategy is verified by experimental results.

  • This paper presents the results of field demonstration for fuel switching to bio-fuel oil in 4 commercial heavy oil fired power plants. The 100% fuel switching field demonstration was successfully carried out in two tangential-firing boilers at a capacity of 75 and 100 MWe respectively without major equipment retrofit, and also 25% bio-fuel oil blending for two opposite firing boilers at a capacity of 350 and 400 MWe respectively. Despite the low density and heating value, the bio fuel was successfully replaced heavy fuel oil at the full load by only adjusting operational parameters. Incase of bio fuel oil combustion, heat absorption of radiative heat transfer section was reduced while convection section has opposite trend. In pollutants emission, a major reductionin SOx as well as 10-20% reduction in NOx were achieved by the fuels witching. On the other hand, boiler efficiency was slightly underestimated.

  • In this paper an auto-switching energy harvesting circuit using vibration and thermoelectric energy is proposed. Since the maximum power point of a thermoelectric generator(TEG) output and a vibration device(PEG) output is 1/2 of their open-circuit voltage, an identical MPPT controller can be used for both energy sources. The proposed circuit monitors the outputs of the TEG and PEG, and chooses the energy source generating a higher output voltage using an auto-switching controller, and then harvests the maximum power from the selected device using the MPPT controller. The proposed circuit is designed in a $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS process and its functionality has been verified through extensive simulations. The designed chip occupies $1.4mm{\times}1.2mm$ including pads.

  • This paper proposes the 2nd-order SDSDM (Space Dithered Sigma-Delta Modulation) for performance improvement of a buck converter. The PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) has a drawback in that power spectrum tends to be concentrated around the switching frequency. The resulting harmonic spikes cause a EMI(Electromagnetic Interference) and switching loss in semiconductor, etc. The 1st-order SDSDM scheme is a kind of DSDM for reducing these harmonic spikes. In this scheme, a switching frequency is spread through random dither generator placed on input part. In experimental result, the proposed 2nd-order SDSDM is confirmed by applying to a buck converter.

  • Wind turbine generators were designed on general regulations of wind condition. At real situations, it could be different from the design conditions. There are many control methods and definitions of transient region, because an efficient wind turbine generator control logic is the important matter in generator performance and annual energy production at real conditions. In this document, the power generation sensitivity for wind speed and turbulence intensities was defined to know the sensitive transient region. Wind conditions are applied for the ranges of 7~10m/s mean wind speed and 14~20% turbulence intensity. The sensibility of HR-D86 wind generator was increased in transient region(8~10m/s) on power curve diagram through a torque control to a pitch control. And then GH-bladed simulations was performed for performance analysis of the torque mode switching in transient region on 2MW direct drive wind generator(HR-D86) which is designed IEC class II for onshore. Through the sensitivity and performance analysis, the sensitivity for real wind condition could be the performance index for an wind generator. And the torque mode switching in transient region can increase the mean power generation on HR-D86 wind turbine generator.

  • This study proposes four novel pulse width modulation (PWM) shoot-through control methods for impedance source (IS) galvanically isolated DC-DC converters. These methods are derived from a PWM control method with shifted shoot-through introduced by the authors in 2012. In contrast to the baseline solution, where the shoot-through states are generated by the simultaneous conduction of all transistors in the inverter bridge, our new approach is based on the shoot-through generation by one inverter leg. The idea is to increase the number of soft-switched transients and, therefore, decrease the dynamic losses of the front-end inverter. All the proposed approaches are experimentally verified through an insulated-gate bipolar transistor-based IS DC-DC converter. Conclusions are drawn in accordance with the results of the switching loss analysis.
