  • Modern power systems driven by high-power converters have become inevitable in view of the ever increasing demand for electric power. The total power loss can be reduced by limiting the switching losses in such power converters; increased power efficiency can thus be achieved. A reduced switching frequency that is less than a few hundreds of hertz is applied to power converters that produce output waveforms with high distortion. Selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation (SHEPWM) is an optimized low switching frequency pulse width modulation method that is based on offline estimation. This method can pre-program the harmonic profile of the output waveform over a range of modulation indices to eliminate low-order harmonics. In this paper, a SHEPWM scheme for three-phase three-leg neutral point clamped inverter is proposed. Aside from eliminating the selected harmonics, the DC capacitor voltages at the DC bus are also balanced because of the symmetrical pulse pattern over a quarter cycle of the period. The technique utilized in the estimation of switching angles involves the firefly algorithm (FA). Compared with other techniques, FA is more robust and entails less computation time. Simulation in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and experimental verification in the very large scale integration platform with Spartan 6A DSP are performed to prove the validity of the proposed technique.

  • This paper focuses on a systematical and in-depth analysis of the reactive power and soft-switching regions of Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converters with dual-phase-shift (DPS) control to achieve high efficiency in a wide operating range. The key features of the DPS operating modes are characterized and verified by analytical calculation and experimental tests. The mathematical expressions of the reactive power are derived and the reductions of the reactive power are illustrated with respect to a wide range of output power and voltage conversion ratios. The ZVS soft-switching boundary of the DPS is presented and one more leg with ZVS capability is achieved compared with the CPS control. With the selection of the optimal operating mode, the optimal phase-shift pair is determined by performance indices, which include the minimum peak or rms inductor current. All of the theoretical analysis and optimizations are verified by experimental tests. The experimental results with the DPS demonstrate the efficiency improvement for different load conditions and voltage conversion ratios.

  • The flyback converter has been applied widely in isolated DC/DC power converters because this converters employ a single MOSFET switch. The leakage inductance should be minimized for high efficiency of flyback converter. but in reality, it is very difficult. Namely, The Snubber circuit is essential to recover the leakage inductance stored energy when the switch is turn off. Flyback Converter typically operates in DCM mode and when switch is turn off in hard switching, this hard switching action results in a high power losses and switching stresses. In order to overcome these problems, a novel soft switching flyback converter using resonant snubber circuit is proposed in this paper. The resonant snubber circuit is composed of the transformer leakage inductance and a capacitor. To verify and confirm the proposed resonant snubber circuit, PSIM simulation and hardware prototype are implemented. Simulation and Experimental results indicate that the proposed resonant snubber circuit is effective.

  • Due to high power ratings and low conduction loss, the TGBT has become more attractive in switching power supplies. However, its lower turn-on and turn-off characteristics than those of MOSFET cause severe switching loss and s switching frequency limitation. This paper proposes 2.4kW. 48V. high efficiency half-bridge DC-DC converter using p paralleled TGBT-MOSFET switch concept to use the merits of TGBTs and MOSFETs. Tn parallel switches. each of I TGBT and MOSFET plays its part during on-periods and switching instants. The switching loss is analyzed by l linearized modelling and the operation of the converter are investigated by simulation results.

  • In this paper, a novel type of auxiliary active snubbing circuit assisted quasi-resonant soft-switching pulse width modulation inverter is proposed for consumer induction heating equipments. The operation principle of this high frequency inverter is described using switching modes and equivalent circuits. This newly developed series resonant high frequency inverter can regulate its high frequency output AC power under a principle of constant frequency active edge resonant soft-switching commutation by asymmetrical PWM control system. The high frequency power regulation and actual power conversion efficiency characteristics of consumer induction heating (IH) products using the proposed soft-switching pulse width modulation (PWM) series load resonant high frequency inverter evaluated. The practical effectiveness and operating performance of high frequency inverter are discussion on the basis of simulation and experimental results as compared with the conventional soft-switching high frequency inverter.

  • This study proposes a new pulse-width modulation switching pattern for the low conduction loss of a three-level neutral point clamped (NPC)-based dual-active bridge (DAB) converter. The operational principle for a bidirectional power conversion is a phase-shift modulation. The conventional switching method of the three-level NPC-based DAB converter shows a symmetric switching pattern. This method has a disadvantage of high root-mean-square (RMS) value of the coupling inductor current, which leads to high conduction loss. The proposed switching method shows an asymmetrical pattern, which can reduce the RMS value of the inductor current with lower conduction loss than that of the conventional method. The performance of the proposed asymmetrical switching method is theoretically analyzed and practically verified using simulation and experiment.

  • Arc lamps are now widely utilized as illumination sources for a large number of investigations in wide-field fluorescence microscopy. Among many power converters for the lamp, the PSFB (Phase-Shift Full-Bridge) converter with the ZVS (Zero Voltage Switching) is the most widely used soft switched circuit in high-power applications. Also, in the most luminaries, the power factor has to be more and more important. Thus, the power factor correction(PFC) must be included in the power system. A new igniter module using the switching power device and the transformer is proposed instead of the conventional igniter using the mechanical contactor. The proposed converter with the high power factor and high efficiency is verified through the experimental works.

  • Power electronic systems such as switching power supplies are accounted as noise sources for other sensitive circuits. EMI caused by power converters can disturb the normal operation of the converter and other adjacent systems. Major research is concentrated on EMI mitigation for power converters in which the main concern is compliance with EMC standards to ensure proper operation of converters and nearby systems. This paper reviews EMI reduction techniques related to switching power converters with emphasis on the conducted EMI. A comprehensive review of significant research works is performed and various methods are thoroughly discussed and compared. Also, a classification of methods is presented. Moreover, converter prototypes are realized which contain several EMI mitigation techniques and their effects are presented via experimental results.

  • PV simulators are essential equipment for testing power conditioning systems (PCS) which are one of an important part in PV generator systems, for testing before shipment. High dynamic PV simulator is required since MPPT(Maximum Power Point Tracking) test procedure has been established by EN50530 regulation recently. Most high quality PV simulator prevailed in the market is linear type which however has low efficiency. This paper proposes design guide lines for the power stage and LCL type filter cooperating with a switching mode PV simulator that shows high efficiency and very low power consumption. Proposed theory is verified by experiment.
