This paper presents the development of a short-circuit protection mechanism on a high voltage switch (HVS) board which is built by a series connection of semiconductor switches. The HVS board is able to quickly detect and limit the peak fault current before the signal board triggers off a gate signal. Voltage clamping techniques are used to safely turn off the short-circuit current and to prevent overvoltage of the series-connected switches. The selection method of the main devices and the development of the HVS board are described in detail. Experimental results have demonstrated that the HVS board is capable of withstanding a short-circuit current at a rated voltage of 10kV without a di/dt slowing down inductor. The corresponding short-circuit current is restricted to 125 A within 100 ns and can safely turn off within 120 ns.
We have designed and simulated an 1-bit ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) by using a half adder. An ALU is the part of a computer processor that carries out arithmetic and logic operations on the operands in computer instruction words. The designed ALU had limited operation functions of OR, AND, XOR, and ADD. It had a pipeline structure. We constructed an 1-bit ALU by using only one half adder and three control switches. We designed the control switches in two ways, dc switch and NDRO (Non Destructive Read Out) switch. We used dc switches because they were simple to use. NDRO pulse switches were used because they can be easily controlled by control signals of SET and RESET and show fast response time. The simulation results showed that designed circuits operate correctly and the circuit minimum margins were +/-27%. In this work, we used simulation tools of XIC and WRSPICE. The circuit layouts were also performed. The circuits are being fabricated.
This paper presents a novel topology for cascaded transformer sub-multilevel converter. Eachsub-multilevel converter consists of two DC voltage sources with six switches to achieve five-level voltage. The proposed topology results in reduction of DC voltage sources and switches number. Single phase low frequency transformers are used in proposed topology and voltage transformation and galvanic isolation between load and sources are given by transformers. This topology can operate as symmetric or asymmetric converter but in this paper we have focused on symmetric state. The operation and performance of the suggested multilevel converter has been verified by the simulation results of a single-phase nine-level multilevel converter using MATLAB/SIMULINK.
Dimorphic yeast Candida albicans reversibly switches between the form of yeast and hyphae depending on external conditions. We investigated possible roles of the myosin family in the growth and dimorphic switches of C. albicans with a general myosin ATPase inhibitor, 2,3-butanedione-2-monoxime (BDM). Transition to hyphae as well as proliferation by budding was completely inhibited by BDM at 16 mM. Presence of 16 mM BDM did not affect hyphae-to-bud transition but it blocked budding. The effects of BDM on yeast growth and dimorphic switches were reversible. More than 70% of the BDM-treated cells demonstrated defects in the amount and the polarized localization of F-actin as well as in the shape and migration of the nucleus, suggesting that myosin activities are needed in these cellular processes of C. albicans.
In the buck-boost DC-DC converter which is used at a certain situation such as in factories where loads often change a lot, the switches in the device make big energy loss in operating at Buck-Boost Mode due to hard switching and are affected by lots of stresses which decrease the efficiency rate of the converter. In order to improve this problem, to decrease the loss of snubber and switching, it has been investigated that zero voltage switching mode and zero current switching mode which make the operation of switches with soft switching. For the more sophisticated and advanced device, this paper is presented the Partial Resonant Soft Switching Mode Power Converter which is adapted the power converter having the partial resonant soft switching mode, that makes switches operate when the resonant current or voltage becomes zero by making the resonant circuit partially at turning on and off of the switches with suitable layout of the resonant elements and switch elements in the converter. Also, this paper includes the analysis and simulation of the Partial Resonant type Buck-Boost Chopper.
This paper proposes a soft-transition control strategy for a three phase ZCS(Zero Current Switching) inverter circuit. Each phase leg of inverter circuit consists of an LC resonant tank, two main switches, and two auxiliary switches. This paper presents design consideration via a study example of a three phase prototype inverter for motor drives. A simple device tester with zero current switching capability is proposed to select eligible auxiliary switches. The principle of operation, feature and design consideration is illustrated and verified through the experiment with a 2.2kW 5kHz IGBT based experimental circuit.
Over the years, traditionally, six-switch three-phase inverters have been widely utilized for variable speed alternating current motor drives. Recently, some efforts have been made on the application of four-switch three phase inverter for uninterruptible power supply and variable speed drives. This is due to some advantages of the four-switch three phase inverter over the conventional six-switch three-phase inverters such as reduced price due to reduction in number of switches, reduced switching losses, reduced number of interface circuits to supply logic signals for the switches, simpler control algorithms to generate logic signals, less chances of destroying the switches due to lesser interaction among switches, and less real-time computational burden. However such as slow di/dt and speed limitation, are the inherent characteristics and main drawbacks of the four-switch configuration. Those problems can be overcome in conjugation with Voltage-doublers which has additional advantage, such as unity power factor correction.
This paper presents a novel prototype of soft-switching PWM Full-bridge converter which incorporates active power switches in series with each rectifier diode in transformer secondary side. Switching and conduction losses of all the switches and devices are reduced as well as commutating current and circulating current flowing through transformer as compared with conventional converter. And duty ratio of primary switches is constant for maximum voltage conversion ratio. But this converter can be varied output by duty ratio of secondary switches. Operation principles basically the same as that of the PWM Full-bridge converter published previously. The operating characteristics of this converter are illustrate and discussed including the simulated analysis.

Many semiconductive switches are operated in series for high voltage operation. The same number of gate drivers are needed to control all the switches, hence, the drivers cause high cost and system complexity. In this study, a simple and low cost gate driver for high voltage thyristor diode switches is investigated. This gate driver can operate several high voltage thyristor diode switches at the same time.

A novel zero voltage and zero current switching (ZVZCS) full bridge (FB) PWM converter with low output current ripple is presented. A simple auxiliary circuit added in the secondary provides ZVZCS conditions to primary switches, ZVS for leading-leg switches and ZCS for lagging-leg switches, as well as reduces the output current ripple (ideally zero ripple). The auxiliary circuit includes neither lossy components nor additional active switches which are demerits of the previously presented ZVZCS converters. Many advantages including simple circuit topology, high efficiency, low cost and low current ripple make the new converter attractive for high performance high power (>1kW) applications. The principle of operation, features and design considerations are illustrated and verified on a 2.5kW, 100KHz IGBT based experimental circuit.
