On Teaching Switched Mode Power Supplies - A Converter with Limited Duty Cycle

  • A way how to teach a general understanding of switched mode power supplies (SMPS) is shown. A fourth order PWM DC-to-DC converter with limited duty cycle range is treated as an example and a survey over important data (maximum voltage and current ratings for the elements, rms- values for the semiconductor devices and a rough approximation of the losses) of the circuit is given. Furthermore, a converter model based on duty ratio averaging is established. Continuous mode of operation is used. The results make it possible to estimate the applicability of the given converter structure and offer sufficient material for the calculation, design, and analysis and give a better insight into switched mode energy conversion.

  • Telecom supplies need to conform to low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and high Power Factor (PF) as per IEC 61000-3-2 and IEEE 519-1992 standards. These high rating power supplies use a three phase utility in which low THD and high PF are realized via various passive and active wave shaping schemes. In this paper, a new design for three phase telecom power supplies is presented with circuit parameter values optimized for high performance in terms of a low THD, high PF, low ripple and high line and load regulation using a suitable combination of various strategies. The performance of the power supply is validated by extensive simulations.

스너버(Snubber) 회로 분석을 통한 회로의 최적설계 (Optimal Circuit Design through Snubber Circuit Analysis)

  • SMPS(Switched Mode Power Supply, 전력공급장치) 회로설계 시 특별한 고찰 없이 지나치기 쉬운 부분이 스너버(snubber) 회로이다. 그러나 스너버(snubber) 회로에 따른 SMPS의 성능저하 및 SET 전체에 미치는 영향은 결코 무시할 수 없다. 또한 스위칭시 피크치 전압과 전류로부터 소자를 보호하고 on/off 스위칭시 손실을 줄여주기 위하여 스위치 양단에 스너버(snubber) 회로를 부가해준다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 스너버(snubber) 회로에 대한 충분한 이해를 위해 이론적 해석 및 실제 회로설계 때 설계자가 응용할 수 있는 실험식을 정리하여, 스너버(snubber) 회로의 최적화를 도모하고자 한다.

Energy harvesting from conducted electromagnetic interference of fluorescent light for Internet of Things application

  • A novel energy harvesting technique that uses conducted electromagnetic interference as an energy source is presented. Conducted EMI generated from fluorescent light using a switched-mode power supply was measured and modeled as an equivalent voltage source. Two types of rectifier circuits-a bridge rectifier and a voltage doubler-were used as the harvesting devices for conducted EMI source. The matching networks were designed based on the equivalent model, and the harvested power was improved. The implemented energy harvester produces a regulated power over 68.9 mW and current over 15.1 mA while a regulated voltage can be selected between 3.3 V and 5 V. The proposed system shows the highest harvesting power indoor environment and can provide enough power for the Internet of Things devices.

Direct Single-stage Power Converter with Power Factor Improvement for Switched Mode Power Supply

  • This paper presents a direct single-stage power converter using single-phase isolated full-bridge converter modules, with inherent power factor correction (PFC) for a 12 kW switched mode power supply (SMPS). The advantages of the proposed converter are its simple control strategy, reduction in number of conversion stage, low input line current harmonics, and improvement in power factor. Analysis of the single-stage converter is carried out in continuous conduction mode of operation. Steady-state analysis of the proposed converter is conducted to obtain converter parameters. A systematic design procedure is also presented for a 12k W converter with a design example. The effect of load variation on SMPS is also studied in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed converter for the complete range of load conditions. A set of power quality indices on input ac mains for an SMPS fed from a single-stage converter is also presented for easy comparison of their performance.

  • Switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) have become a major source of conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) which is the combination between differential mode (DM) noise and common mode (CM) noise. This paper presents the conducted EMI reduction approach in flyback switched mode power supply by rerouting for circuit balance to reduce common mode noise. And differential mode noise can be reduce by adding $c_x$ capacitor across the input power line, and passive element to the gate drive of switching device MOSFET to slow down the switching times. This combination of our approach is the effective way to reduce the conducted EMI and it is also a cost effective for product design

  • 본 연구에서 전원이 공급되는 의료기기들에서 공통적으로 사용되며, 성능, 안전성과 신뢰성 측면에서 기존 전원모듈보다 우수한 250 W SMPS방식을 적용한 의료용 전원모듈의 개발하였다. SMPS의 특성상 AC전원의 50 ~ 60 Hz 라인 주파수를 DC로 변환하는 회로의 설계와 높은 주파수로 변경하기 위한 전자회로로 구성하였고, 완전한 방사노이즈 흡수회로를 구성하여 의료기기 오동작을 방지하기 하도록 설계하였다. SMPS 전원모듈은 의료기기뿐만 아니라 PC, 가정용 기기 및 전자 교환기 등의 제품에도 확대 적용이 가능하다.

구조분할 해석기법 기반 전원보드 공통모드 노이즈 감쇠 설계 (Common-Mode Noise Suppression in Switched-Mode Power Supply Boards Using Segmentation Method)

  • 본 논문에서는 전원보드의 공통모드 노이즈 감쇠를 위한 디커플링 커패시터 회로를 효율적으로 시뮬레이션할 수 있는 구조분할 해석기법을 제시한다. 제시하는 구조분할 해석기법이 적용된 전원보드 설계에서는 보드를 두 부분으로 구조분할하였으며, 분할된 구조와 커패시터 회로의 임피던스 파라미터를 재결합하기 위한 방법을 제시하였다. 구조분할 해석기법을 적용함으로써 공통모드 노이즈 감쇠 시뮬레이션에 수행되는 시간을 46 % 이상 단축하였다.
