  • Experimental study on combustion characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors has been conducted for the assessment of critical injector design parameters. A reusable, unielement thrust chamber has been fabricated with a water-cooled copper nozzle. Two principal design parameters. a swirl angle and a recess length, have been investigated through hot firing tests for the understanding of their effects on high pressure combustion. Clearly, both parameters considerably affect the combustion efficiency, dynamics and hydraulic characteristics of an injector. Internal mixing of propellants in a recess region increases combustion efficiency along with the increase of a pressure drop required for flowing the same amount of mass flow rates. It is concluded that pressure buildup due to flame can be released by the increase of LOx flow axial momentum or the reduction of a recess length. Dynamic pressure measurements of the thrust chamber show varied dynamic behaviors depending on injector configurations.

  • To investigate the relation between flame structure and combustion dynamic characteristics in bi-swirl coaxial injectors for a liquid rocket engine, combustion experiments were performed using gaseous methane and gaseous oxygen. CH* radicals and pressure fluctuations were simultaneously measured by changing the injector geometries such as recess length/orifice diameter and the flow conditions such as equivalence ratio/oxidizer mass flow rate. As the injector geometries affected the velocities and mixing of the propellants, the change in flame structures was observed. From a result of the frequency analysis, it was confirmed that combustion dynamic characteristics varied according to the injector geometry/flow condition and combustion instabilities could occur under specific recess length/flow conditions.

  • Detailed experimental study has been made of air blast kerosene spray flames with and without swirl in combustion air flow. Phase-Doppler detect technique is used to measure Sauter mean diameter, axial component mean and rms velocity, size-velocity correlation, and number density. These measurements are obtained for both nonreacting and reacting cases under several stable flame conditions. The results show that the introduction of swirl to the combustion air modifies the spatial distribution of droplet size, velocity, and number density, and thus alters the flame structure. However, due to the weak swirl intensity, the overall structure of swirling flames are essentially same as that of nonswirling flames. Physical model of structure of air blast atomized spray flames is projected to show that spray flames are composed of three distinct regions: the two-phase mixture region, the main reaction and the intermittent combustion region. Near the atomizer, two phase mixture of droplet and air is formed in the core region. This dense spray region is characterized by high droplet number density and the strong convective effect. There follows the main combustion region where the main flame penetrates within the spray boundary. Main reaction region of these flames are governed by internal group combustion mode. Finally there exists the intermittent combustion region where local group burning or isolated droplet burning occurs.

  • The swirl flow applied for high efficiency and reduction of emission such as NOx, CO in a gas turbine engine makes recirculation zone by shear layer in the combustion chamber. This recirculation zone influences a decreasing flame temperature and flame length by burned gas recirculation. Also it is able to suppress from instability in lean-premixed flame. In this study, it was found that the swirl flow field was characterized as function of swirl number using PIV measurement in dump combustor. As increasing swirl number, a change of flow field was presented and recirculation zone was shifted in the nozzle exit direction. Also turbulent intensity and turbulent length scale in combustor were decreased in combustion. It has shown reduction of eddies scale with swirl number increasing.

  • The vaporization and combustion of liquid spray in a cylindrical shape combustor was studied numerically. Mixture of liquid drops and air was assumed to be ejected from the center-hole and assisting air from the concentric annulus with swirling. Eulerian-Lagrangian scheme was adopted for the two phase calculation, and the interactions between the phases were considered with the PSIC model. Also adopted were the infinite conductivity model for drop vaporization, the equation of Arrhenius and the eddy break-up model for reaction rate, and the k-epsilon model for turbulence calculations. Gas flow patterns, drop trajectories and contours of temperature and mass fractions of the gas species were predicted with swirl number, drop diameter, and equivalence ratio taken as parameters. Calculations show that the vaporization and the consequent combustion efficiency enhance with the increase of the swirl number and/or with the decrease of drop size, and the higher maximum temperature is attained with the higher equivalence ratio.

  • In the case of appling a unielement injector developed for a full scale liquid rocket combustor, a operating condition or configuration of the injector is changed by combustion pressure, arrangement and injector quantity of a full scale liquid rocket combustor. In order to verify application, swirl coaxial injectors propelled by jet-A1 and liquid oxygen are tested at different conditions of a combustion pressure, a flowrate and an injector length. As a test result, the application of the present swirl coaxial injectors is excellent because an efficiency of a characteristic velocity is increased at the each test condition beyond that variation of dynamic pressure intensity is small.

  • The aim of this study is to suppress the high-frequency combustion instability by acoustic absorption through swirl injector with variable air core length. In the previous study, acoustic damping effects on air core (length, shape, volume) and location of the injector in a model chamber were investigated. Through previous results, our study has advanced to the effect of tuned multi-injectors. From the experimental data, it is proved that increasing of numbers of injectors mounted each anti-node point can increase acoustic damping effect. Also, when tuned injectors at 1L, 1T, 1L1T modes simultaneously are installed each anti-node point of model chamber, damping effect of tuned injectors with multi modes is well agreed with it of tuned injectors with single mode.

  • This study investigates a heavy duty diesel engine with swept vol. 12.6L, 4cycle-OHC type to verify the effects of the performance and exhaust gas emission according to the variable specifications of both swirl ratio and flow coefficient in inlet port, combustion bowl and fuel injection system. To meet the high BMEP and stringent exhaust emission standard, a turbocharger with wastegate and an intercooler were installed in the engine. Helical port, major design parameters for combustion chamber and electronic fuel injection pump with 1,000bar were reviewed and applied. Confirmation tests were also performed to meet the target value, $NO_x$ 5.0g/kWh and PM 0.1g/kWh of Euro3 exhaust emission legislation. The results of this study show that not only is it effective to use a relatively bigger bowl size for controlling rapid burning condition due to the decreased in-bowl swirl, but also to use a concave cam with double injection rates to decrease $NO_x$.

  • It is important to study on the combustion instability to develop liquid rocket engines for preventing lower combustion efficiency and destruction of combustion chamber. There are many researches on simplex injector with liquid pulsation to solve this problem. In real rocket engine system, however, they use coaxial injectors. Therefore, research on coaxial injector with liquid pulsation is essential. In this study, we investigate dynamic characteristics of gas centered swirl coaxial injector varying tangential inlet diameter. A mechanical pulsator was used to generate an excitation in the liquid flow, and the response characteristics of the injector were confirmed. As tangential inlet diameter increased, mass flow rates increased and spray angle decreased. As tangential inlet diamter decreased, gain decreased because the pressure fluctuation in the injector manifold rarely passed through the inlet. Additionally, it was confirmed that a sufficiently small tangential inlet served as a damper.

  • Flow velocity was measured by, use of hot wire anemometer. Turbulence intensity was in proportion to mean flow velocity regardless of swirl velocity. And integral length scale has proportional relation with swirl velocity regardless of measurement position. Turbulent burning speed during flame propagation which was determined by flame photograph and gas pressure of combustion chamber was increased with the lapse of time from spark and was decreased a little at later combustion period. Because of combustion promotion effect, turbulent burning speed was increased according to increase of turbulence intensity. Burning speed ratio i.e. ratio of turbulent burning speed ($S_BT$) to laminar burning speed ($S_BL$) was found out by use of turbulence intensity u' and integral length scale $l_x$ , $\delta_L$ is width of preheat zone in laminar flame.
