  • In this research montmorillonite intercalations complexes as organophilic clay compounds which have very different properties as the starting clay mineral were synthesized by the substitution of metal ions which exist in the montmorillonite layers with the organic cations which have long alkyl chain by the cation exchange reaction. Thereafter the obtained products dried in high vacuum were treated with the various swelling liquids such as dist. water, methanol, acetone, ether and acetonitrile in order to know the swelling behaviour of the synthesized complexes. Especially for this research Korean and Turkish clays were selected to compare the intercalations complexes of both clays and their swelling behaviour.

  • Incorporation of polar functional moieties into polyethylene (PE) film has been achieved by graft copolymerization of polar monomers such as methacrylic acid (MAAc) and acrylamide (AAm) on to PE film, preirradiated with ${\gamma}$-rays from $^{60}Co$ source, using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator in aqueous medium. Percentage of grafting of MAAc and AAm was determined as a function of irradiation dose, monomer and initiator concentration, temperature, reaction time and amount of water. Maximum percentage of grafting of MAAc (1453%) and AAm (21.28%) was obtained at [MAAc] = $235.3{\times}10^{-2}$ mol/L, [AAm] = $23.4{\times}10^{-2}$ mol/L, [BPO] = $5.5{\times}10^{-2}$ mol/L and $16.5{\times}10^{-2}$ mol/L at $80^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$ in 180 min and 90 min respectively. The grafted PE films were characterized by FTIR, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) Scanning Electron Micrography (SEM) and X-ray diffraction methods. Some selective properties of grafted films such as swelling behavior, ion and metal uptake have been carried out. The biodegradation studies of the grafted PE films have also been investigated. The grafted films developed superior swelling behavior with maximum swelling (480%) in water as compared to pristine PE (13.55%), better thermal stability and ion and metal uptake studies showed promising results that can be effectively used for desalination of brackish water and separation of metals from the industrial effluents.

  • Purpose: The masserteric space is an important tissue compartment of the face, but a disease in it is difficult to diagnose and treat. The submasseteric abscess is located between the masseter muscle and mandibular ramus with different appearances such as sepsis, infection, or tumor. Especially the common misdiagnosis of submasseteric abscess is acute or chronic parotitis. The purpose of this report is to pay special attention to the possible diagnosis of submasseteric abscess for the symptoms of unilateral cheek swelling and tenderness that accompany marked trismus. Methods: A 11-year-old boy came to our hospital because of facial swelling, tenderness, and trismus in a history of left cheek swelling and toothache. We diagnosed his case as submasseteric abscess by CT scan and surgical intervention was performed. Under general anesthesia, the abscess was opened by the intraoral incision and considerably massive pus was drained. Results: Swelling, tenderness, and trismus became to subside during postoperative 10 days and general condition and vital signs became stable. After 6 months, CT scan showed that both masseteric muscles were symmetric and there was no periosteal reaction of the mandible. Conclusion: In conclusion, submasseteric abscess is a rare infection with the symptoms of cheek tenderness and marked trismus. A detailed medical history and clinical examination of a patient as well as computed tomography(CT) are important tools in the accurate diagnosis and efficient treatment of the submasseteric abscess. Adequate drainage, removal of cause, and antibiotic infusion are the management of choice.

  • Transparent materials are well known but preparation of transparent poly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate {poly (HEMA)} material by varying solvent is a new one and economically reliable. This material is prepared from hydroxyl based monomer HEMA by radical polymerization using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator and isobutanol, 2-butanol, 1-butanol, hexane and toluene as a solvent. The reaction temperature, time and stirring speed were set at $70^{\circ}C$, 4 hrs and 150 rpm, respectively. The polymer was characterized for functional group by IR spectroscopy. It was observed that the intensity of band at $1637 cm^{-1}$ a characteristic band of C=C stretching disappeared indicating that it was completely consumed after polymerization. It was observed that swelling percentage increases with increase as time passes but after a certain time a constant swelling percentage is achieved. SEM pictures reveals that poly (HEMA) prepared by different solvent shows pore with a distinguishable void up to several micrometers. The BET surface area, cumulative pore volume and average pore diameter is greater in poly (HEMA) prepared by hexane as a solvent compared to other solvents. Poly (HEMA) prepared by 1-butanol as a solvent shows higher glass transition temperature compared to other solvents. Poly (HEMA) prepared by different solvents shows $90{\sim}94%$ light transmission property from light transmission measurement and looks transparent.

  • In this work, a novel method to synthesis of an acrylic superabsorbent hydrogel was reported. In the two stage hydrogel synthesis, first copolymerization reaction of acrylonitrile (AN) and acrylamide (AM) monomers using ammonium persulfate (APS) as a free radical initiator was performed. In the second stage, the resulted copolymer was hydrolyzed to produce carboxamide and carboxylate groups followed by in situ crosslinking of the polyacrylonitrile chains. The results from FTIR spectroscopy and the dark red-yellow color change show that the copolymerization, alkaline hydrolysis and crosslinking reactions have been do take place. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) verifies that the synthesized hydrogels have a porous structure. The results of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis showed that the average pore diameter of the synthesized hydrogel was 13.9 nm. The synthetic parameters affecting on swelling capacity of the hydrogel, such as AM/AN weight ratio and hydrolysis time and temperature, were systematically optimized to achieve maximum swelling capacity (330 g/g). The swollen gel strength of the synthesized hydrogels was evaluated via viscoelastic measurements. The results indicated that superabsorbent polymers with high water absorbency were accompanied by low gel strength. The swelling of superabsorbent hydrogels was also measured in various solutions with pH values ranging from 1 to 13. Also, the pH reversibility and on-off switching behavior makes the hydrogel as a good candidate for controlled delivery of bioactive agents. Finally, the swelling of synthesized hydrogels with various particle sizes obey second order kinetics.

  • A new hydroxylpropyl chitosan (HPCTO) capable of forming both thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystalline phases was synthesized by reaction of alkali chitosan with propylene oxide and its solid films cross-linked with glyoxal were prepared by casting the liquid crystalline solution in methanol. The thermal and swelling properties of the cross-linked films were investigated. The films displayed fingerprint patterns characteristic of cholesteric liquid-crystalline phase, and their pitches increased with increasing temperature and cross-linker concentration. The cross-linked samples exhibited an anisotropic swelling in both water and methanol, suggesting that the two-dimensional cross-linking preferentially performs between HPCTO molecules. The degree of anisotropy highly depended on the solvent, but hardly on the cross-linker concentration investigated.

  • The development of delayed-type hypersensitivity(DTH) reaction to Staphylococcus aureus in mice was studied, Mice received 3 injections of $10^8$ viable S. aureus subcutaneously showed a marked footpad swelling when mice were challenged with $10\;{\mu}g$ staphylococcal protein antigen into footpad(The percent increase of footpad thickness at 24 h after challenge wsa 35% approximately). Histological observation of footpad of immunized mice showed a marked thickness of subcutaneous tissue due to edematous reaction and massive infiltration of lymphocytes and neutrophils which are characteristic cells in DTH reaction. Intensity of DTH reaction of mice immunized with viable bacteria was much higher than that of mice immunized with staphylococcal protein or heat-killed bacteria. The DTH reaction to S. aureus could be transferred to normal recipient mice by both spleen cells and lymph node cells.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effects of oriental medical treatment on Extensive limb swelling which is rare adverse reaction of vaccination. Methods A 11 months old infant who appealed unilateral thigh swelling after immunization and signs of local inflammation was administered a complex herbal medicine consisting of five decoctions; Gwakhyangjunggisan, Binsosan, Danggwisusan, Samchulgunbitang and Gwibitang. The length of the constant regions of the thigh circumference was measured every visit. Each process was recorded by photograph. After one year from the first visit, phone call was conducted to follow-up. Results The length of the thigh after administration of herbal medicine did not change much, but the part where swelled hard became little bit softer. A year later, patient's growth and walking was normal but the swollen part not changed. Since then the similar adverse effects did not recur on booster doses vaccines. Conclusions The adverse reactions of vaccination are rarely reported and there is no specific treatment for swelling from Hepatitis B vaccine. It will be more helpful to study if more cases reported about any adverse drug reactions or any side effects from the immunization.

  • The hyaluronic acid (HA) with excellent biocompatibility can be combined with lactide, the ester dimer of polylactide, with good biodegradability to produce biocompatible materials applicable to drug delivery system. By freeze drying method, HA and lactide were crosslinked with crosslinking agent, 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide. Degree of lactide and EDC reaction was determined by the analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The degree of lactide and EDC reaction increased and swelling ratio decreased as the mole ratio of lactide to HA or crosslinking agent concentration increased or reaction temperature decreased. The drug release experiment result from membranes having different degree of lactide reaction showed that drug release rate reduced in proportion to the degree of lactide reaction. The drug release experiment result from drugs having different hyrodphobicity showed that the more hydrophobic drug was released more slowly.

  • Hydroxypropylated starches and acetylated starches were prepared by reaction of potato starch with propylene oxide and acetic anhydride, respectively and then degree of retrogradation and swelling power were investigated in different pHs and temperature. The extent of retrogradation determined by glucoamylase method during freeze-thaw treatment and storage in low temperature $(0{\sim}5^{\circ}C)$ showed that modified potato starches were slowly retrograded as the increase of degree of substitution. The order of the retrogradation tendencies in different pHs were pH 4>pH 6>pH 8>pH 10. Retrogradation of hydroxypropylated potato starches were less than that of acetylated potato starches. Swelling power of starches were influenced more by the temperature than by the pH. The order of the swelling power tendencies in different pHs were pH 10>pH 2>pH 8>pH 4>pH 6.
