To improve the poor mechanical and low-temperature properties of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP)-based propellants, the addition of binders was investigated using GAP and flexible polymer backbone-structural polycaprolactone (PCP) at various weight(wt) ratios, and varying the ratio of Desmodur N-100 pluriisocyanate (N-100) to isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). Using Gee's theory, the solubility parameter of the PCP network was determined, in order to elucidate the physical and chemical interaction between GAP and PCP. The structure of the binder networks was characterized by measuring the cross-link densities and molecular weights between cross-links ($M_c$) obtained by a swelling experiment using Flory-Rhener theory. The thermal and mechanical properties of the segmented block copolyurethane (GAP-b-PCP) binders prepared by the incorporation of PCP into the binder recipes were investigated, along with the effect of the different curatives ratios.
This study reports the preparation and characterization of nanohydrogels by using sodium alginate as a model material. Alginate nanohydrogels (ANH) were prepared by emulsification-diffusion method in a w/o system with 1,2-diacyl-sn-glycero- 3-phosphocholin as the lipophilic surfactant. The effects of the alginate to surfactant ratio and the remaining water contents on the mean particle size and swellability of ANHs were investigated in terms of the concentration, agitation speed, and agitation time. The feasibility of using nanohydrogels and their controllability were proved by the water the absorbency of ANHs during a 7-day evaluation by dynamic light scattering. In this work, the mean particle sizes of ANHs could be controlled from 49.2 nm (measured in ethanol phase) to $1.9{\mu}m$ (measured in water phase, after 7 days of water absorption).

In a ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system, a vertical ground heat exchanger (GHE) is widely accepted due to a higher thermal performance. In the vertical GHE, grout (also called grouting material) plays an important role in the heat transfer performance and the initial installation cost of the GHE. Bentonite-based grout has been used in practice because of its high swelling potential and low hydraulic conductivity. This study evaluated the thermo-physical properties of the bentonite-based grouts through lab-scale measurements. In addition, we conducted performance simulation to analyze the effect of mixed ratio of grouts on the design length and thermal performance of the vertical GHE. The simulation results show that thermally-enhanced grouts improve the heat transfer performance of the vertical GHE and thus reduce the design length of GHE pipe.
A interpolymer complexes composed of poly(acrylic acid)(PAA) and po!y(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) were prepared by template polymerization of acrylic acid in the presence of PVA for mucoadhesive drug delivery. FT -IR results showed that the PAA/PVA interpolymer complex was formed by hydrogen bonding between the carboxyl groups of PAA and the hydroxyl group of PVA. The dissolution rate or the swelling ratio of the PAA/PVA interpolymer complexes was dependent on the pH and molecular weight of PVA that was used as a template. (omitted)
We manufactured PVA-derived hydrogels using a foam generation technique that has been widely used to prepare colloidal gas aphrons(CGA). These gels were differentiated to the conventional gels such as for medical or pharmaceutical applications, which have tiny pores and some crystalline structure. Rather these should be used in de-pollution devices or adhesion of cells or biomolecules. The crosslinkers used in this work were amino acid, organic acid, sugars and lipids(vitamins). The structures of the gels were observed in a scanned electron microscope. Amino acids gels showed remarkably higher swelling ratios probably because their typical functional groups help constructing a highly crosslinked network along with hydrogen bonds. Boric acid and starch would catalyze dehydration while structuring to result in much lower water content and accordingly high gel content, leading to less elastic, hard gels. Bulky materials such as ascorbic acid or starch produced, in general, large pores in the matrices and also nicotinamide, having large hydrophobic patches was likely to enlarge pore size of its gels as well since the hydrophobicity would expel water molecules, thus leading to reduced swelling. Hydrophilicity(or hydrophobicity), functional groups which are involved in the reaction or physical linkage, and bulkiness of crosslinkers were found to be more critical to gel's cross linking structure and its density than molecular weights that seemed to be closely related to pore sizes. Microscopic observation revealed that pores were more or less homogeneous and their average sizes were $20{\mu}m$ for methionine, $10-15{\mu}m$ for citric acid, $50-70{\mu}m$ for L-ascorbic acid, $30-40{\mu}m$ for nicotinamide, and $70-80{\mu}m$ for starch. Also a sensory test showed that amino acid and glucose gels were more elastic meanwhile acid and nicotinamide gels turned out to be brittle or non-elastic at their high concentrations. The elasticity of a gel was reasonably correlated with its water content or swelling ratio. In addition, the PVA gel including 20% ascorbic acid showed fair ability of cell adherence as 0.257mg/g-hydrogel and completely degraded phenanthrene(10 mM) in 240 h.

Physico-chemical properties of starches from potato cultivars with different colors were investigated. White Atlantic potato had 10% higher starch yield than violet Bora Valley potato. It turned out that the shape and structure of Atlantic and Bora Valley potato starch were the same by mechanical analysis using X-ray and SEM. The ratio of $50\;{\mu}m$ particle in starches from Atlantic and Bora Valley potato was $45.44\pm2.79%$ and $42.37\pm1.03%$ respectively. The particle size of Atlantic potato starch was less than that of Bora Valley; however, there was no significant difference (p<0.05). As for moisture coupling, there was no difference (p<0.05) between the two potatoes. Swelling power showed a high increase from $65^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$. The swelling power of Atlantic starch was higher by about 0.3% than that of Bora Valley at $90^{\circ}C$. Since Atlantic has smaller starch particles than Bora Valley, more starch particles are contained in the same size, and hence a difference in swelling power. As a result of measuring the gelatinization of potato starches from Atlantic and Bora Valley, a higher gelatinization start, climax, and complete temperatures occurred at Bora Valley than Atlantic. As for gelatinization enthalpy, Bora Valley starch with a higher gelatinization temperature consumed more energy for gelatinization.
The hydorgen ions in PVA/SSA membranes were substituted with monovalent metal ions, $Li^{+}$, $Na^{+}$, $K^{+}$, divalent metal ion forms, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Ba^{2+}$, trivalent metal ion forms, $Al^{+}$. The effect of exchange with metal ions was investigated through the swelling measurement and pervaporative experiments for water-ethanol and water-methanol mixtures at various operating conditions. In addition, ESCA analysis was carried out to study the substitution of the metal ions in membranes. The swelling ratio decerased in the sequence of $Li^{+}$, $Na^{+}$, $K^{+}$ and this might be due to the 'salting-out` effect while the swelling ratios for divalnet and trivalent ion-substituted membranes were affected by the combined effect of salting-out, electrostatic crosslinking and extent of metal ion substitution. For the pervaporation performance, PVA/SSA-$H^{+}$membrane showed the lowest flux and highest separation factor for all aqueous ethanol solutions. The typical results of the flux, 59 g/$m^{2}$hr and the separation factor, 44 were obtained at $50^{\circ}C$ for 90% ethanol aqueous mixture. For water-methanol solutions, the PVA/SSA membranes substituted with monovalent PVA/SSA membranes substituted with divalent and tribalent metal ions, both `salting-out` and electrostatic effects affected the pervaporative results.
To study the effect of incorporation of a surface crosslinking layer on a crosslinked poly (sodium acrylate) (cPSA) absorbent with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate CEGDMA), we synthesized several surface crosslinked cPSAs with EGDMA by an inverse emulsion polymerization method to delay the absorption of excess water in concrete, Liquid paraffin was used as a continuous phase. cPSA was synthesized with acrylic acid (AA) neutralized with aqueous 8 M sodium hydroxide solution as a monomer, N,N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as crosslinking agent and ammonium persulfate (APS) and sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) as a redox initiator system by inverse emulsion polymerization. FTIR spectroscopy was used to characterize $Ca^{2+}$ ion interaction with cPSA and cPSA-EGDMAs. The swelling ratios of synthesized absorbents were evaluated from the absorption in deionized water, cement saturated aqueous solution and aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide (pH 12). Equilibrium swelling times for cPSA and surface crosslinked cPSA with EGDMA were 2 and 3 hrs, respectively. We also observed an increase in setting time of the cement and an increase in the compressive strength of mortar by addition of the synthesized cPSA-EGDMA.
Bentonite-based grout has been widely used to seal a borehole constructed for a closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger in a geothermal heat pump system (GHP) because of its high swelling potential and low hydraulic conductivity. Three types of bentonites were compared one another in terms of viscosity and thermal conductivity in this paper. The viscosity and thermal conductivity of the grouts with bentonite contents of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by weight were examined to take into account a variable water content of bentonite grout depending on field conditions. To evaluate the effect of salinity (i.e., concentration of NaCl : 0.1M, 0.25M, and 0.5M) on swelling potential of the bentonite-based grouts, a series of volume reduction tests were performed. In addition, if the viscosity of bentonite-water mixture is relatively low, particle segregation can occur. To examine the segregation phenomenon, the degree of segregation has been evaluated for the bentonite grouts especially in case of relatively low viscosity. From the experimental results, it is found that (1) the viscosity of the bentonite mixture increased with time and/or with increasing the mixing ratio. However, the thermal conductivity of the bentonite mixture did not increase with time but increased with increasing the mixing ratio; (2) If bentonite grout has a relatively high swelling index, the volume reduction ratio in the saline condition will be low; (3) The additive, such as a silica sand, can settle down on the bottom of the borehole if the bentonite has a very low viscosity. Consequently, the thermal conductivity of the upper portion of the ground heat exchanger will be much smaller than that of the lower portion.
Bentonite has been generally used as vertical cutoff barrier material and reported to have several problems regarding its low workability, drying shrinkage cracking by particle cohesion, and ineffective waterproof ability under sea water condition. In this study, the particle sealant, the furnace slag coated by the mixture of bentonite, sepiolite and guargum, was developed to compensate these weak points and the hydraulic conductivity of the particle sealant was evaluated. Drying shrinkage cracking and swelling index was estimated to find the optimal mixing ratio of bentonite, sepiolite and guargum. The hydraulic conductivity of the particle sealants having different amount of sealant (bentonite-sepioliteguargum mixture) coating the furnace slag was estimated using the rigid wall permeameter and flexible wall permeameter. The results showed that drying shrinkage cracking was not found in the bentonite-sepiolite mixture with 20% sepiolite contents and the results from free swelling tests for the sealant having 1 : 0.025, 1 : 0.05 and 1 : 0.075 of weight ratios of bentonite-sepiolite mixture and guargum under simulated sea water condition were higher than those for the bentonitesepiolite mixture without guargum under tap water condition. These three sealants were coated on the furnace slag with 50% and 60% of sealant in the particle sealant and the hydraulic conductivity was estimated. In the cases of the particle sealants having 20% sepiolite in the bentonite-sepiolite mixture and 1 : 0.075 weight ratio of the bentonite-sepiolite mixture and guargum, the hydraulic conductivity from the rigid wall permeameter was below $1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ cm/sec under simulated sea water condition. The hydraulic conductivity of the particle sealant having $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$~$1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ cm/sec by the rigid wall permeameter was estimated using the flexible wall permeameter and found to be below $1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ cm/sec.
