Air springs are prevalently used as suspension in train. However, air springs are seldom used in automobiles where they improve stability and comfort by enhancing the impact-relief, breaking, and cornering performance. Thus, this study proposed a new method to analyze air springs and obtained some reliable design parameter which can be utilized in vehicle suspension system in contrast to conventional method. Among air spring types of suspension, this study focused on sleeve type of air spring as an analysis model since it has potential for ameliorating the quality of automobiles, specifically in its stability and comfort improvement by decreasing the shock through rubber sleeve. As a methodology, this study used MARC, as a nonlinear finite element analysis program, in order to find out maximum stress and maximum strain depending on reinforcement cord's angle variation in sleeves. The properties were found through uniaxial tension and pure shear test, and they were developed using Ogden Foam which is an input program of MARC. As a result, the internal maximum stresses and deformation according to the changes of cord angle are obtained. Also, the results showed that the Young's modulus becomes smaller, then maximum stresses decrease. It is believed that these studies can be contributed in automobile suspension system.

In the field of automobile industry, lightweight problems are very important in terms of reducing fuel and protecting environment. To satisfy these demands, the attempt to substitute aluminum automobile components for cast steel part has been actively carried out. To fabricate the aluminum automobile suspension part that has the same mechanical properties with cast steel part, design conditions such as shape and dimension of part shall be established. Therefore in this study, shape and dimension conditions of suspension part were proposed. Aluminum automobile suspension part was fabricated by semi-solid die-casting process under the obtained design conditions. Moreover to evaluate the possibility of application to the automobile component, stress and fatigue analysis were performed by using ABAQUS S/W and compared with those of conventional automobile suspension part.
Aerostatic instability of a suspension bridge may suddenly appears when the deformed shape of the structure produces an increase in the value of the three components of displacement-dependent wind loads distributed in the structure. This paper investigates the aerostatic stability of suspension bridges using an advanced nonlinear method based on the concept of limit point instability. Particular attention is devoted to aerostatic stability analysis of symmetrical suspension bridges. A long-span symmetrical suspension bridge (Hu Men Bridge) with a main span of 888 m is chosen for analysis. It is found that the initial configuration (symmetry or asymmetry) may affect the instability configuration of structure. A finite element software for the nonlinear aerostatic stability analysis of cable-supported bridges (NASAB) is presented and discussed. The aerostatic failure mechanism of suspension bridges is also explained by tracing aerostatic instability path.

Sensitivity analysis of suspension elements of an articulated bogie for light railway vehicles is presented. The ride, stability and safety are used as dynamic performance indices. Suspension elements of 10 and a conicity of wheel are used as design variables. To analyze sensitivity of design variables. the railway vehicle dynamics analysis program AGEM is used. The results show that the secondary suspension elements have a strong effect on ride and the primary suspension elements have a moderate effect on ride. Conicity of wheel has a strong effect on the stability. The safety is not effected by all the design variables.
In recent engineering, the designer has become more and more dependent on the computer simulations such as FEM (Finite Element Method) and BEM (Boundary Element Method). In order to optimize such implicit models more efficiently and reliably, the meta-modeling technique has been developed for solving such a complex problems combined with the DACE (Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments). It is widely used for exploring the engineer's design space and for building meta-models in order to facilitate an effective solution of multi-objective and multi-disciplinary optimization problems. Optimization of a train suspension is performed according to the minimization of forty-six responses that represent ten ride comforts, twelve derailment quotients, twelve unloading ratios, and twelve stabilities by using the Kriging meta-model of a train suspension. After each Kriging meta-model is constructed, multi-objective optimal solutions are achieved by using a nonlinear programming method called SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming).

Servo performance of a disk drive is greatly affected by the mechanical resonance frequencies of the head gimbal assembly (HSA). It is important factor to allow broader bandwidths for servo system in improving overall drive performance. In this paper, an optimal design for ODD suspension is attempted to increase resonance frequencies in tracking direction. Initial model was designed and the design parameter was defined to the model. The mode frequency variation for the change of design parameter was observed by modal analysis using the finite element method(FEM). The sensitivity matrix was calculated from the observed data and so through sensitivity analysis, an optimized ODD suspension was designed to have the higher resonant frequency than the initial model.

For the purpose of developing a vibration-based tension force evaluation procedure for hangers in suspension bridges, a 3D finite element model of hangers is constructed in this paper. With the developed finite element formulation, a frequency-based sensitivity-updating algorithm is applied to identify the target cable system the proposed method is also able to identify the flexural rigidity. the axial rigidity, and the torsion rigidity of a cable. For a field application, a vibration test on hangers of the Yong Jong Grand Suspension Bridge is carried out and the collected data is used to verify the proposed method.

As a disk drive becomes widely used in portable environments, one of the important requirements is durability under severe environmental condition, especially, resistance to mechanical shock. An important challenge in the disk recording is to improve disk drive robustness in shock environments. If the system comes In contact with outer shock disturbance, the system gets critical damage in head-gimbal assembly or disk. This paper describes analysis of a HGA(head-gimbal assembly) in micro MO drives to shock loading during both non-operating state and operating state. A finite element model which consists of the disk, suspension, slider and air bearing was used to find structural response of micro MO drives. In the operational case. the air bearing is approximated with four linear elastic springs. The commercially available finite element solver, ANSYS/LS-DYNA, is used to simulate the shock response of the HGA in micro MO drives. In this paper, the mechanical robustness of the suspension is simuiated considering the shock responses of the HGA.
In this paper, analytical modeling of lift and drag forces in permanent magnet electrodynamic suspension systems (PM EDSs) are presented. After studying the impacts of PM dimensions on the permanent magnetic field and developed lift force, it is indicated that there is an optimum PM length in a specified thickness for a maximum lift force. Therefore, the optimum PM length for achieving maximum lift force is obtained. Afterward, an objective design optimization is proposed to increase the lift force and to decrease the material cost of the system by using Genetic Algorithm. The results confirm that the required values of the lift force can be achieved; while, reducing the system material cost. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and experimental tests are carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the PM EDS system model and the proposed optimization method. Finally, a number of design guidelines are extracted.
Using the filtrate of loess suspension, we cultivated soybean sprouts and investigated its effect on growth and quality in soybean sprouts. In comparison with soybean sprouts cultivated by tap water, the soybean sprouts cultivated by the filtrate of loess suspension at $20^{\circ}C$ showed increases in its weight by 11.4% and length by 14.9%. When cultivated at $25^{\circ}C$, the soybean sprouts by filtrate of loess suspension also showed increases in its weight by 9.9% and length by 11.0%. We compared inorganic element contents and pH level between the filtrate of loess suspension and tap water. Contents of Ca, Mg, K, Na, Zn, Mn, and Cu did not show any difference, while only P was higher in the tap water. pH value did not show much difference either. Consequently, it seemed that inorganic element contents and pH in the filtrate of loess suspension did not give any effect on the growth of the soybean sprouts. And also there was no any significant difference in inorganic element and amino acid contents in two kinds of soybean sprouts. However in a sensory test, the color and overall acceptability of the soybean sprouts cultivated by the filtrate of loess suspension showed better than the soybean sprouts cultivated by the tap water.
