Background: The wide spectrum of clinical features in advanced stages of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) probably contributes to disparities in outcomes because of different prognostic variables significant for stage IIIB/IV patients. Hence the aim of this study was to check for favorable response of patients to various chemotherapeutic combinations with respect to patient survival in stage IIIB and stage IV NSCLC disease. We selected those patients for our study who were receiving treatment with paclitaxel, gemcitabine or etoposide in combination with platinum based drugs. Materials and Methods: Seventy-two patients who visited the hospital from June 2009 to November 2012 with confirmed diagnosis of lung cancer were included, and data were collected for follow up and classified according to treatment received with respect to patients' regimen and response, and overall survival. This study analyzed tumor variables that were associated with clinical outcome in advanced NSCLC patients who were undergoing first-line chemotherapy for stage IIIB/IV NSCLC. Results: Comparative data on various parameters like age, gender, stage, histology, site of disease, metastatic site and chemo-regimens was analyzed; these parameters predicted variable significant improvement for overall survival ($p{\geq}0.05$). One and two year survival rates were 20.8% and 15.3%. Conclusions: In this study we found slight improvement in survival rates in NSCLC and clinical outcomes with one combination (carboplatin+paclitaxel). Overall there were only marginal differences in survival rates for other chemo-regimens evaluated in this study.
The effects of sediment and water movement on the survival and growth of Campylaephora hypnaeoides J. Agardh were examined in culture to elucidate why this species grows as an epiphytic alga. The survival and growth rates of Campylaephora tetraspores declined as the sediment concentration increased under both water-movement and no-water-movement treatments. After 5-day cultures under various sediment treatments, the respective survival and growth rates ranged from 27.32 to 78.63% and 0.22 to 0.29 $day^{-1}$ under the no-water-movement and from 15.66 to 82.69% and 0.19 to 0.31 $day^{-1}$ under the water-movement treatments. The maximum survival and growth of C. hypnaeoides tetraspores occurred at 20 and 40 ${\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$, respectively. The survival of Campylaephora tetraspores and germlings declined with increasing dark period, but the tolerance of total darkness based on the survival rates was two-times greater for 5-day old sporelings than for tetraspores after 12 days. In conclusion, Campylaephora hypnaeoides grows as an epiphytic alga because its survivorship and growth decline rapidly with greater water movement and sedimentation and with lower light intensities.
This studies were conducted to investigate the survival rate of frozen-thawed spermatozoa of Jindo Dog by monosaccharide and freezing rates. Experimental animals were prepared 12 males within 1~8 year's old and collected once in a couple of weeks by digital manuplation methods. Collected semen was diluted 1:1 with Tris-egg yolk extender and added 4, 6 or 8% of glycerol and none, 4 mM glucose or 4 mM fructose as cryoprotectant and was equilibrated for 2 hrs in $4^{\circ}C$. In monosaccharide groups, the freezing rate was 5 cm-5 min. above $LN_2$. The survival rates without monosaccharide were $50.7{\pm}19.0%$, $58.6{\pm}18.0%$, $40.0{\pm}10.0%$ in 4, 6 or 8% glycerol, respectively. In addition of glucose, the survival rates were $43.1{\pm}14.7%$, $38.1{\pm}16.5%$, $33.3{\pm}4.0%$ in 4, 6 or 8% glycerol, respectively and in fructose, were $47.9{\pm}21.1%$, $61.3{\pm}6.2%$, $34.3{\pm}12.6%$ in 4, 6 or 8% glycerol, respectively. There showed significantly different between glycerol groups and monosaccharides groups (p<0.05). The survival rates of freezing rate in 5 cm-5 min. group was $64.5{\pm}15.8%$, $51.9{\pm}27.6%$, $29.7{\pm}24.8%$ and in 10 cm-10 min. group was $62.5{\pm}20.3%$, $64.9{\pm}23.6%$, $34.5{\pm}27.4%$ in 4, 6 or 8% glycerol, respectively. There were significantly different between freezing rates (p<0.05). These results suggest that the addition of fructose with 6%-glycerol and slow freezing improve the survival of frozen-thawed sperm in Jindo Dog.
In order to determine suitable conditions for rapid freezing of porcine embryos, the kind and concentration of cryoprotectants, sucrose concentrations, equilibration time and thawing temperature in freezing medium were examined in relation to the survival of frozen-thawed oocyte and embryos. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The suitable concentrations of cryoprotoctant in the freezing medium which consisted of TCM-199+20% FCS were 1.5M for glycerol, 2.0M for DMSO, 2.5M for ethylene glycol, and 2.0M for propanediol. The sucrose concentration of 0.25M in the medium was found to optimal because the survival rate was markedly higher at this concentration when compared to the others. The survival rate was relatively high when the frozen embryos were thawed at 30$^{\circ}C$ in the freezing medium containing 2.5M cryoprotectants. The equilibration periods of 2.0 and 5.0 minutes revealed the higher survival in the media containing 1.5 or 2.1M glycerol when compared to 10 and 15 minutes. 2. The fertilization rates of frozen-thawed follicular oocytes which matured in vitro for 1, 12, 24 and 48 hours were 6.7~26.7% depending on the maturation time, and the rates were relatively high for those matured for a short period of time. The survival rates of frozen-thawed oocytes which matured in vitro for certain periods and fertilized were 10.0~30.0% depending on the maturation time.
In the present study, we investigated the effects of food and salinity on growth and survival of river puffer, Takifugu obscurus offsprings in indoor land-based tank during the early development. In the food experiment, the river puffer larvae (TL 8.7$\pm$0.1 mm, BW 20.0$\pm$3.2 mg) were fed with tubificid, Limnodrilus gotoi, water flea, Daphnia carinata, mysid, Neomysis awatschensis, Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum and artificial food together Artemia nauplii for 30 days, and the growth and the survival of larvae were investigated. In the salinity experiment, the river puffer larvae and juvenile at three stages (Stage I: TL 5.8$\pm$0.4 mm; Stage II: TL 12.0$\pm$0.2 mm, Stage III: TL 44.5$\pm$0.7 mm) were supplied with Artemia nauplii, water flea and/or artificial food and were reared in 0, 10, 20 and 30 psu at respective stages. The results shows that the growth rates of larvae feeding with artificial food and tubificid together Artemia nauplii were higher than those of larvae in other groups, but the survival rates of larvae feeding with water flea and mysid together Artemia nauplii were higher than those of larvae in other groups. In salinity, the results shows that the growth and survival rates of offsprings were significantly higher in 10∼20 psu than those in 0 and 30 psu at Stage I and n. At Stage III, the growth and the survival rates were the highest in 20 psu, but the lowest in 0 psu. However, it should be noted that the rates in 0 and 30 psu were significantly enhanced at Stage III in comparison with those at Stage I and II. Therefore, it is concluded that river puffer, T. obscurus is euryhaline marine species, which can normally grow and live at salinities from 0 to 30 psu, and that a combinative supplement with Artemia nauplii and water flea, D. carinata may confer an advantage on growth and survival of the river puffer offsprings in indoor land-based tank.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of embryonic stage, cryoprotectant, and freezing-thawing method on the rates of survival and development of the cryopreserved mouse early embryo and finally to establish the cryopreservation method of surplus embryos obtained during assisted reproductive technology (ART). Two to eight cell embryos were obtained from oviducts of mated $F_1$ hybrid female mice superovulated by PMSG and hCG. Two-step EG, DMSO and 4-step EG, DMSO were used as cryoprotectant and dehydration and rehydration method of embryos, and slow-cooling or rapid-cooling method was used as frozen program. The survival rates of embryos were measured after thawing and rehydration, and the developmental rates of embryos were compared and observed during culturing embryos for 24, 48, 72, 96 hrs. As for the survival and development rates of embryos according to embryonic stage, the survival rate of 2 cell stage in EG and DMSO was significantly higher than 4~8 cell (65.4% versus 61.2%, 81.1% versus 72.5%) (p<0.01, p<0.01), but the development rates of 4~8 cell embryos in EG and DMSO were significantly higher than 2 cell embryos for whole culture period (p<0.01) and the development rates of 4~8 cell embryos in EG were significantly higher than 2 cell embryos in DMSO (p<0.01). As for the survival and development rates of embryos according to cryoprotectant, the survival rate of 2 cell embryo in DMSO was significantly higher than that in EG(77.0% versus 64.4%) (p<0.01), whereas the development rate of embryos was not differ till 24 hrs. The development rate from morular to hatching blastocyst, however, was sinificantly higher in EG than in DMSO during 48 hr (p<0.01). The survival rate of 4~8 cell embryo was 62.5% in EG and 73.3% in DMSO. The development rates of embryo in EG were significantly higher for whole culture periods (p<0.01, 0.05). In respect to the effect of freezing and thawing program on the survival and development rates of embryos, method of slow cooling and rapid thawing was more effective than that of rapid cooling and rapid thawing. The survival rate of embryo in 2 cell stage was higher than in 4~8 cell stage, and EG appears more effective cryoprotectant than DMSO because EG showed better development rates of embryos in 2 and 4~8 cell stage. Moreover, slow cooling and rapid thawing method was considered as the best cryopreservation program.
Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an extremely aggressive tumor with a poor clinical course. Although many efforts have been made to improve patients' survival rates, patients who survive longer than 2 years after chemotherapy are still very rare. We examined the baseline characteristics of patients with long-term survival rates in order to identify the prognostic factors for overall survivals. Methods: A total of 242 patients with cytologically or histologically diagnosed SCLC were enrolled into this study. The patients were categorized into long- and short-term survival groups by using a survival cut-off of 2 years after diagnosis. Cox's analyses were performed to identify the independent factors. Results: The mean patient age was 65.66 years, and 85.5% were males; among the patients, 61 of them (25.2%) survived longer than 2 years. In the multivariate analyses, CRP (hazard ratio [HR], 2.75; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.25-6.06; p=0.012), TNM staging (HR, 3.29; 95% CI, 1.59-6.80; p=0.001), and progression-free survival (PFS) (HR, 11.14; 95% CI, 2.98-41.73; p<0.001) were independent prognostic markers for poor survival rates. Conclusion: In addition to other well-known prognostic factors, this study discovered relationships between the long-term survival rates and serum CRP levels, TNM staging, and PFS. In situations with unfavorable conditions, the PFS would be particularly helpful for managing SCLC patients.

Background: Although the Cox's proportional hazard model is the popular approach for survival analysis to investigate significant risk factors of cancer patient survival, it is not appropriate in the case of log-term disease free survival. Recently, cure rate models have been introduced to distinguish between clinical determinants of cure and variables associated with the time to event of interest. The aim of this study was to use a cure rate model to determine the clinical associated factors for cure rates of patients with breast cancer (BC). Materials and Methods: This prospective cohort study covered 305 patients with BC, admitted at Shahid Faiazbakhsh Hospital, Tehran, during 2006 to 2008 and followed until April 2012. Cases of patient death were confirmed by telephone contact. For data analysis, a non-mixed cure rate model with Poisson distribution and negative binomial distribution were employed. All analyses were carried out using a developed Macro in WinBugs. Deviance information criteria (DIC) were employed to find the best model. Results: The overall 1-year, 3-year and 5-year relative survival rates were 97%, 89% and 74%. Metastasis and stage of BC were the significant factors, but age was significant only in negative binomial model. The DIC also showed that the negative binomial model had a better fit. Conclusions: This study indicated that, metastasis and stage of BC were identified as the clinical criteria for cure rates. There are limited studies on BC survival which employed these cure rate models to identify the clinical factors associated with cure. These models are better than Cox, in the case of long-term survival.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate changes in the management and 5-year survival rates of patients with oral cancer in our department over a 30-year period. Materials and Methods: We investigated the patient distributions, treatment methods, method of neck dissection according to cancer stage, and 5-year survival rates for 700 oral cancer patients over the periods of 1982-1996 (256 patients), 1999-2006 (248 patients), and 2007-2011 (196 patients). Results: Stage IV patients were the largest group in all of the time periods evaluated. Although surgery and radiotherapy were the most common methods in all periods (over 50%), the prevalence of patients who underwent concomitant chemoradiotherapy increased from 7.0% to 16.2%. The use of radical neck dissection decreased from 43.0% to 5.3%, while conservative surgical methods increased from 24.1% to 76.3%. Lastly, the overall 5-year survival rate increased from 31.6% to 63.5% during the study period. Conclusion: Although the 5-year survival rate reached the same level as that of other developed countries during the course of our study, most patients continue to come to the hospital with stage IV disease. In order to increase the 5-year survival rate of oral carcinoma, it may be necessary to improve public education and social efforts relevant to early diagnosis.
Background: As a descriptive study targeting 2,068 cancer patients as men of national merit in 2013, this study aims to provide the basic data for systematizing the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer by comparatively analyzing the 5-year survival rate. Methods: This study researched the survival of cancer patients through Electronic Medical Record and Patriots-Veterans Qualification Program, targeting 2,068 newly-diagnosed cancer patients verified in five veterans hospitals and consigned management system. This study verified differences between general characteristics of cancer patients as men of national merit and analyzed their survival rate. Results: The cancer patients as men of national merit were super-aged as their average age was 72.5. In the analysis of general characteristics of five major prevalent cancers, there were statistically significant differences according to age, region, cancer diagnostic path, differentiation, diagnostic method, treatment method, SEER stage, and survival period, except for the types of the man of national merit (p<0.001). The whole survival rate of cancer patients as men of national merit was 50%. The 5-year survival rates of predisposing cancers were shown as prostate cancer (79%), colorectal cancer (64%), gastric cancer (57%), liver cancer (32%), and lung cancer (12%). In the cancer diagnostic path, all the predisposing cancers showed the highest survival rate in medical examination. In the treatment method, the surgery showed the highest survival rate. The cancer patients as men of national merit showed a lower survival rate than the general cancer patients of Korea. Conclusion: It would be needed to guarantee the honorable and happy life through health recovery as special treatment of contribution and sacrifice of super-aged men of national merit by increasing the cancer survival rates through regular checkup, early diagnosis, and high-quality treatment system that could have important effects on the survival rate according to the occurrence of cancers.
