  • This article describes the current status of site-based environmental education (EE) in the Republic of Korea. Implications for site-based EE program development and operation are presented and recommendations for an improvement are provided. Questionnaires were mailed to 205 schools and organizations where site-based EE programs operated in 2002 with funding from the Korean Ministry of Environment. The questionnaire was designed and used to examine the scope, operation, and needs of site-based EE programs. The response rate was 27.3%. The results of the survey indicated that 'awareness', 'participation', and 'attitude' were addressed by the program goals and objectives more than 'knowledge' and 'skills'. The survey also indicated that activities in the programs were not variable and most were teacher/instructor-centered. Most of the programs reflected the 'connection with everyday life, direct experience and sensitivity'. There were some difficulties in motivating students and finding a good location and qualified instructional staff. Needs included well-designed program development and dissemination, professional development, increased funding support, and more effective program evaluation.

  • This study investigates what consumption values affect attitude and behavioral intentions toward a premium lunch box at a convenience store using VAB(Value-Attitude-Behavior) model. The main survey was conducted by a research company by means of an online survey in the form of a self-administered questionnaire. The samples were limited to customers who had tried the premium lunch box before. The survey was conducted in October 2016. The collected data were analyzed by using SPSS 21.0 for Windows and AMOS 21.0. A structural equation model(SEM) was used to verify the proposed relationships among the study variables. Three factors representing the value of the premium lunch box were identified: social & functional value, economic value, and epistemic value. The finding showed that these values had a positive effect on attitude toward the premium lunch box and that attitude had a positive effect on behavioral intentions.

  • Splice site prediction in DNA sequence is a basic search problem for finding exon/intron and intron/exon boundaries. Removing introns and then joining the exons together forms the mRNA sequence. These sequences are the input of the translation process. It is a necessary step in the central dogma of molecular biology. The main task of splice site prediction is to find out the exact GT and AG ended sequences. Then it identifies the true and false GT and AG ended sequences among those candidate sequences. In this paper, we survey research works on splice site prediction based on support vector machine (SVM). The basic difference between these research works is nucleotide encoding technique and SVM kernel selection. Some methods encode the DNA sequence in a sparse way whereas others encode in a probabilistic manner. The encoded sequences serve as input of SVM. The task of SVM is to classify them using its learning model. The accuracy of classification largely depends on the proper kernel selection for sequence data as well as a selection of kernel parameter. We observe each encoding technique and classify them according to their similarity. Then we discuss about kernel and their parameter selection. Our survey paper provides a basic understanding of encoding approaches and proper kernel selection of SVM for splice site prediction.

  • For the purpose of finding how the annoyance response to aircraft noise is affected by non-noise variables, the questionnaire survey is conducted around the Gimpo International Airport in Seoul, Korea. The non-noise variables used in this research are divided into two categories; demographic and attitudinal variables. The result of the survey suggests that aircraft noise annoyance is not affected to an important extent by other noise sources(e.g., road traffic noise and community noise etc.) and the demographic variables (sex, age, education, occupation, dwelling type and length of residence). It has been found that it is affected to an important extent by the attitudinal variables such as complaints.

  • A general hospitals change continuously and rapidly, the way of growth and change becomes an important factor in the interior design. For this purpose, it compares and analyzes the image between different general hospital's ultrasonography with content level in the interior design to aspect investigating the preferences of the patient. Also the field survey on the real users was carried out, asking what kind of interior design you like in the general hospital ultrasonography. These research materials can be utilized for the practice application in the interior design of general hospital ultrasonography with the analyzing each available space. In the survey result, the point on the users needs things which are considered as the most important aspect for the fundamental data for the reasonable design planning and the basic principles of the modeling plan in the hospital's ultrasonography. So this study is to investigate and analyze the characteristics of the waiting area, way finding, color, lighting, counter design. This study would apply to interior design for the modeling of general hospital's ultrasonography.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide design guidelines necessary for creating disability-friendly campuses. To this end, a literature survey and a survey on the current educational welfare facilities for disabled college students were conducted. The fact-finding survey was conducted in writing and visiting evaluations on 19 campuses located in Gangwon-do(province). The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1) The college enrollment rate of the disabled has doubled since 2000, but it was found to be half of the enrollment rate based on school enrollment, and the number of students who gave up in the middle is increasing. This is due to an obstacle in the learning environment, so it is necessary to improve welfare facilities. 2) As a result of evaluating the status of educational welfare support for students with disabilities, it was found that the overall evaluation result was improved, but the absolute evaluation result was less than 70%, and it was not improved. 3) As a result of evaluating the actual conditions of the intermediate facilities, indoor facilities, sanitary facilities, guidance and other facilities, and unit spaces, it is necessary to expand and improve them due to the lack of disabled parking marks, continuity of access roads, pedestrian safety passages, lifts, and rest areas for the disabled.

  • In empirical software engineering research, there is an increased use of questionnaires and surveys to collect information from practitioners. Typically, such data is then analyzed based on overall, descriptive statistics. Overall, they consider the whole survey population as a single group with some sampling techniques to extract varieties. In some cases, the population is also partitioned into sub-groups based on some background information. However, this does not reveal opinion diversity properly as similar opinions can exist in different segments of the population, whereas people within the same group might have different opinions. Even though existing approach can capture the general trends there is a risk that the opinions of different sub-groups are lost. The problem becomes more complex in case of longitudinal studies where minority opinions might fade or resolute over time. Survey based longitudinal data may have some potential patterns which can be extracted through a clustering process. It may reveal new information and attract attention to alternative perspectives. We suggest using a data mining approach to finding the diversity among the different groups in longitudinal studies (agile skeptics). In our study, we show that diversity can be revealed and tracked over time with the use of clustering approach, and the minorities have an opportunity to be heard.
