  • In the present, Wireless Sensor Network(WSN) has been used for the purpose of the military operation with surveillance systems and for collecting useful information from the natural environment. Basically, low-power, easy deployment and low cost are the most important factors to be deployed for WSNs. Lots of researches have been studied to meet those requirements, especially on the node capacity and battery lifetime improvements. Recently, the study of wireless mesh networks applied into the surveillance systems has been proceeded as a solution of easy deployment. In this paper, we proposed large-scale intelligent multi-layer surveillance systems based on QoS assuring Wireless Mesh Networks and implemented them in the real testbed environment. The proposed system explains functions and operations for each subsystem as well as S/W and H/W architectures. Experimental results are shown for the implemented subsystems and the performance is satisfactory for the surveillance system. We can identify the possibility of the implemented multi-layer surveillance system to be used in practice.

  • Wireless Sensor Networks, especially supporting for surveillance service, are one of the core properties of network-centric warfare(NCW) that is a key factor of victory in future battlefields. Such a tactical surveillance sensor network must be designed not just for energy efficiency but for real-time requirements of emergency data transmission towards a control center. This paper proposes efficient clustering-based methods for supporting mobile sinks so that the network lifetime can be extended while emergency data can be served as well. We analyze the performance of the proposed scheme and compare it with other existing schemes through simulation via Qualnet 5.0.

  • Unmanned robots are very useful for autonomous security systems. These robots navigate autonomously move in a large area for surveillance. It is very important for robots that cover such a wide area to communicate with a control systems. Therefore, the control system needs various communication methods to check the status of the robot and send/receive messages. In addition, it is necessary to provide an easy interface for the user to send security mission commands to the robot. In this paper, we propose a control system based on a variety of communication techniques to perform security by safely communicating with a number of robots in a wide area space. The proposed system designed for considering user UI, data storage and management, and shows usability by constructing it in a real environment.

  • One of the most important issues in Wireless Sensor Networks is to save energy of the sensor node. But transmission latency is also the problem to solve for some applications such as military surveillance, object tracking. In these applications sensor node needs to send lots of data in limited time when an even such as object appearance occurs. So a delay efficient data transmission method is required. In this paper we propose a MAC protocol adequate for those applications. This paper proposed a low delay data transmission mechanism for military surveillance in wireless sensor networks. In the MAC protocol, a receiver node sends another beacon frame to sender node after receiving data packet. Using this second beacon frame, fast hop-to-hop transmission can be performed. Results have shown that the proposed MAC control mechanism outperformed RI-MAC protocol in the terms of latency.

Abstract Recently, due to the rapid development of network technology, the need for the network management appeared. So two representative standardards, SNMP and CMIP, have been applied to many network management system. But the more complex and vaious network are constructed, the demand for more efficient network management technology grew bigger. Currently, TMN technology is beginning to be widely applied to the management of networks. CORBA has been widely adopted for developing distributed systems in many areas of information technology. CORBA provides the infrastructure for the interoperability of various object-oriented management applications in a distributed environment, and, recently there have been world-wide research for the integration of CORBA within a TMN framework. Many attempts have been made to enable network management using CORBA techonology and some are working on already. This paper defines the architecture for integrated network management based on current CORBA/TMN integration technologies and then presents the design and implementation for alarm surveillance system which was applied to the defined architecture. The prototype implementation was done using IONA orbix. The proposed integrated network management framework will provide users with consistent management operations and ability to manage complex and various networks and to gather statistical data from those networks.

  • Recently the need for network surveillance to detect abnormal behavior within dynamic social networks has increased. We consider a dynamic version of the degree corrected stochastic block model (DCSBM) to simulate dynamic social networks and to monitor for a significant structural change in these networks. To apply a control charting procedure to network surveillance, in-control model parameters must be estimated from the Phase I data, that is from historical data. In network surveillance, however, there are many situations where sufficient relevant historical data are unavailable. In this paper we propose a self-starting Shewhart control charting procedure for detecting change in the dynamic networks. This procedure can be a very useful option when we have only a few initial samples for parameter estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed procedure has good in-control performance even when the number of initial samples is very small.

  • The surveillance and epidemiological investigation systems for companion animals in South Korea are significantly underdeveloped compared to those for humans and livestock. Recent outbreaks, such as idiopathic neuromuscular syndrome and highly pathogenic avian influenza among cats, have highlighted the need for reliable systems. This short review conducts situation analysis regarding disease surveillance and epidemiological investigation for companion animals in South Korea. The current challenges include an absence of administrative leadership, a lack of legal support, and unreliable medical data. The recommendations for future directions include clear leadership by the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, amending the Act on the Prevention of Contagious Animal Diseases to include companion animals, and enhancing the quality of medical data through standardized coding systems, such as Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms. In addition, sentinel surveillance rather than universal systems should be established to provide adequate incentives for local practitioners to provide data and develop sustainable public-private networks. These recommendations could be important for developing a comprehensive and sustainable system for disease surveillance and epidemiological investigation in the companion animal field.

  • In this paper, the implementation techniques of intelligent nuclear material surveillance system based on the SOM(Self Organized Mapping) was described. Unattended continuous surveillance systems for nuclear facility result in large amounts of data, which require much time and effort to inspect. Therefore, it is necessary to develop system that automatically pinpoints and diagnoses the anomalies from data. In this regards, this paper presents a novel concept of a continuous surveillance system that integrates visual image and radiation data by the use of neural networks based on self-organized feature mapping

  • The wireless sensor networks (WSNs) became a very essential tool in borders and military zones surveillance, for this reason specific applications have been developed. Surveillance is usually accomplished through the deployment of nodes in a random way providing heterogeneous topologies. However, the process of the identification of all nodes located on the network's outer edge is very long and energy-consuming. Before any other activities on such sensitive networks, we have to identify the border nodes by means of specific algorithms. In this paper, a solution is proposed to solve the problem of energy and time consumption in detecting border nodes by means of node selection. This mechanism is designed with several starter nodes in order to reduce time, number of exchanged packets and then, energy consumption. This method consists of three phases: the first one is to detect triggers which serve to start the mechanism of boundary nodes (BNs) detection, the second is to detect the whole border, and the third is to exclude each BN from the routing tables of all its neighbors so that it cannot be used for the routing.
