Background: Use of spiritual/ religious resources is one important coping strategy for breast cancer patients. However, the relationship between spiritual coping and adjustment to cancer diagnosis has not been well investigated among Iranian breast cancer patients. Materials and Methods: This descriptive-correlational study was undertaken among 266 breast cancer patients referred to two educational centers in north-western Iran. They were selected using a convenience sampling method. The Iranian Religious Coping Scale and Iranian Coping Operations Preference Enquiry were used for data collection. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 13.0. Results: The study findings showed that Iranian cancer patients had a high level of spiritual coping. Also, positive religious coping strategies were used more frequently than negative approaches. In addition, there was a positive and significant correlation between spiritual coping and adjustment to cancer among study participants. Conclusions: Using spiritual coping strategies may play a vital role in adjustment process in patients with breast cancer. Therefore, having spiritual counseling and incorporating coping strategies into the treatment regimen may be effective for enhancing illness adjustment in such patients.
Purpose: This study was intended to examine the effects of educating the Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) control for the nurses working in the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: The study was conducted using one group pre-post test research design. The education on infection control was provided to 31 nurses working at the medical and surgical ICUs. A comparison was then made in terms of the degree of performing infection control a month before, two weeks after, and three months after the education respectively. The incidences of VAP at the medical and surgical ICUs were compared for 3 months before and after the education. Results: The average performance scores between before and after the education showed statistically significant differences. Compared to three months before, the incidence of VAP after the education was decreased slightly from 5.48 to 1.88 per 1,000 ventilator days. Conclusion: It is necessary to continue the VAP education, specifically on infection prevention and control methods and the consistent evaluation of its effects as well as the development of standardized educational program should be approached extensively in further studies.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in quality of life in patients who received breast conserving surgery (BCS) or modified radical mastectomy (MRM) for breast cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 women with breast cancer who underwent either BCS or MRM between September 2011 and April 2012 at a private health center and completed their chemotherapy and radiation therapy cycles were included in the study. To assess the quality of life, we used a demographic questionnaire, the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the Quality of Life assessment in Breast Cancer (EORTC QLQ-BR23). Results: Using QLQ-C30, we found that patients who underwent BCS had better functional status and fewer symptoms than patients who underwent MRM. In QLQ-BR23, independent factors improving the functional scales were BCS, higher level of education and marital status (married); independent factors improving symptoms were BCS, higher level of education, younger age and low and normal body mass index (BMI). In QLQ-C30, independent factors affecting the functional and symptom scales were only BCS and higher level of education. Conclusions: We determined that patients who received BCS had better functional status and less frequent symptoms than patients who underwent MRM.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors for falls in tertiary hospital inpatients and to suggest data for developing a nursing intervention program for preventing falls. Methods: Data were collected between January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2017. Kaplan-Meier estimation was used to measure the survival rate, and the log-rank test was used for the differences between the fall group and the non-fall group. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify the risk factors for falls. Results: The incidence rate of falls for the inpatients was 1.2 cases per 1,000 days of hospitalization. The risk factors for falls were more likely to be found among those who were aged ${\geq}81$, had not undergone surgery, had poor joint motion, had unsteady gait, needed help or supervision, used assistive devices, had comorbidity, and took at least two drugs. Conclusion: For the inpatients, the risk factors for falls included age, surgery, comorbidity, medication that could change mobility, joint motion, and use of patient care equipment. It is necessary to give special attention to inpatients who have any of these risk factors and to develop a falls risk assessment tool.
The surgical hand scrub (SHS) is the single most important procedure in the prevention of post-operative wound infections and yet it remains the most violated of all infection control procedures. The purpose of this study was to gain an overview of SHS habits in operative th atre personnel and to determine knowledge and attitudes to identify whether there is a need for improvement. The subjects for this study included 79 doctors and 94 nurses working in the operative th atres of four hospitals in Incheon City and Kyungki Province. Related data were collected from July 25 to August 10, 1995 by the author. The data were analyzed using descriptive stat-istics and Chi-squre test. The results of the study are summarized as follows : 1. Nurses felt that they conducted SHS for a longer period of time than doctors did(X=20.1, P=.005). 2. Nurses and doctors had some knowledge of slip-ping rings off fingers and the length of nails, but they lacked knowledge on the duration of SHS, handwashing after an operation and on manicure. 3. There were many reasons given for insufficient SHS included : 1) because they were so busy (38%). 2) brushes were too harsh(19.7%). 3) operations were very simple(18.7%). 4) surgical latex gloves provide functional barrier(11.6%). 5) SHSs were troublesome(7.4%) 6) there were no clocks near the sinks(2.5%) and 7) the operative patients were administered antibiotics after operartion(2.1%). 4. Most of nurses and doctors considered SHS to be important in prevention against post operative infections. 5. Nurses were found to do a thorough SHS, but residents were found to neglect SHS. 6. Considering prevention against postoperative infections, most nurses and doctors considered aseptic techniques, environment-sanitary management and SHS more important than the use of antibiotics, the resistance of patients or the method of operation. 7. Half of the nurses and doctors(54.3%) considered surgical latex gloves to function well as a barrier. 8. Half of the nurses (56.4%) and doctors(51.9%) learned SHS as part of the curriculum in their school education and the rest(nurses : 95.7%, doctors : 74.7%) learned SHS as part of their In Service Education. In conclusion, these findings suggest a need to develop an educational program on surgical hand scrub and hospital infection control for surgical personnels, to install clocks near the hand scrub sinks, to consider a violation report for negligent surgical hand scrubs, and to develop a soft brush for hand scrubs in order to increase performance of the surgical hand scrub.
Purpose: Tonsillectomy is a very common surgical procedure, particularly in children. The purpose of this study was to identify current evidence in nursing research on pediatric tonsillectomy by analyzing and evaluating Korean nursing studies related to pediatric tonsillectomy. Methods: An integrative literature review of Korean pediatric tonsillectomy research was conducted. Databases were searched to identify research that related to nursing care for pediatric tonsillectomy children. Results: Of the 115 studies identified, 13 studies met the inclusion criteria for this review. All studies were experimental studies and most of those studies had a quasi experimental design. No correlational studies or qualitative studies were found. Providing nursing information and education for children and their mothers at pre, during, and post tonsillectomy by pediatric nurses were found to be effective in reducing children's pain and anxiety and their mother's anxiety and uncertainty, and increasing children's appropriate sick role behaviors and their mother's satisfaction with nursing services provided and knowledge related to tonsillectomy. Conclusion: Although most studies reported positive effects in terms of post tonsillectomy outcomes, lack of methodological rigor limits the current evidences for pediatric tonsillectomy nursing interventions. Greater attention to improve methodological rigor for Korean research on pediatric tonsillectomy is needed.

This study was conducted to develop and apply clinical nursing practice training simulation program using Standardized Patient for Nursing Students focused on infectious respiratory disease. This study is descriptive methodological study. Through prior consideration of documents and educational task of infectious respiratory disease was conducted with interview of clinical specialists of infection control managers. Development of educational task for infectious respiratory disease for Nursing Students went through the content validity. Finally, 10 educational tasks are developed 'knowledge of respiratory infections disease', 'hand washing', 'put on mask', 'lead to put on mask to patients and caregiver', 'intravenous injection via 3way', 'surgical aseptic technique', 'sterilization medical instrument', 'management of contaminated linen', 'infected personnel management manual'. The infectious respiratory disease simulation program was developed based on the ADDIE model and proceeded to 4 steps of analysis, design, development, implementation. The infection control education program included lectures (20 min), skill training (20 min), simulation using standardized patient (20 min), and debriefing (40 min), The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics with SPSS program for version 23.0. The results of this study confirmed that the clinical nursing practice training simulation program using standardized patients was effective in infectious respiratory disease of the nursing college students in knowledge of infectious respiratory disease and clinical nursing performance. we found this practical training program for nursing college students to improve knowledge and clinical competency of infection control. we expected that this developed program could be applied to practical training for various infectious control.
Nosocomial infection is important in the management of the nursing care and has been found to be related with the airborne microbes contamination. The purpose of this study is to identify the differences of the airborne microbes between hospitals, nursing units, days and times and to identify the difference in the types of microorganisms between hospitals, nursing units, days and times. This study was conducted from May 25, to July 10, 1981, according to R. Koch's methods for quantative samplings of airborne microbes and the results of this study were reviewed in a statistical method. The following conclusions were obtained: 1. There was a significant difference in the types of airborne microbes between 8 hospitals (F=5.0491, p<0.01) 2. There was a significant difference in the types of airborne microbes between surgical, medical, nursery, 1.C.U., operating theatre and outpatient nursing unit. (F=2.1764, p<0.05) 3. There was not a significant difference in the types of airborne microbes between Monday, Thursday and Saturday (F= 1.6365, p>0.05) 4. There was a significant difference in the types of airborne microbes between AM 7 : 00, AM 11:00 and PM 3 : 00. (F=7.2951, p<0.01) 5. 4061 colonies were divided into more 48 types and the classification was as follows. gram positive cocci (2024 colonies) 49.3% gram positive bacillus (1211 colonies) 29.8% gram negative bacillus (577 colonies) 14.2% fungus(200colonies) 4.9% gram negative cocci (41 colonies) 1.0% other's(8 colonies) 0.3% 6. There was a significant difference of airborne microbes between 8 hospitals. (F=7.7943, P<0.01) 7. There was not a significant difference of airborne microbes between 6 nursing units. Purpose: This study proposed to examine the effects of a blended-learning orientation program executed for nursing students' clinical practice. Method: The participants were 61 nursing students in the experimental group and 57 in the control group. For the experimental group, a blended-learning orientation program was executed by e-learning (on-line) and lecture-led training (off-line) from two-week before the start of clinical practice in medical-surgical nursing. For the control group, orientation was given in the traditional lecture-led training by distributing printed materials before clinical practice. A pre-test was conducted on the experimental and control group before clinical practice, and a post-test was conducted after two-week of clinical practice in order to examine the effects of the orientation program. Results: After two-week of clinical practice, differences were observed between the experimental group and the control group in adaptation to clinical practice (F=10.242, p=.002), communication skills (F=4.305, p=.040) and clinical competence (F=6.823, p=.010). Conclusions: The blended-learning orientation program enhanced nursing students' adaptation to clinical practice, improved their communication skill and increased their clinical competence. Accordingly, it is recommended to develop and apply practical education using blended-learning in the area of nursing science.
