  • This paper analyzes overvoltage on testing line for various parameter effect examination. Model systems consist of overhead line and underground cable. The model considered actual characteristic data of distribution lines. and will be constructed at testing yard. The simulations were performed under various line configuration such as cable kinds, cable length, lightning wave, lightning wave time, transformer and branch circuits. The simulation models are established by EMTP/ATPDraw and Line Constants are calculated by ATP_LCC. When lightning surge strikes on conductor of overhead line, EMTP/ATPDraw calculates overvoltage in many cases. Simulation results will be compared with real testing results at testing yard. The compared results will be used to establish protection methods in actual underground distribution systems.

  • In order to secure the safety of coastal areas from the continuous storm surge in Korea, it is important to predict the wave movement and properties accurately during the storm event. To improve the accuracy of the storm simulation, and to quantify coastal risks from the storm event, the dependencies between wave height, wave period, and storm duration should be analyzed. In this study, therefore, copulas were used to develop multivariate statistical models of sea storms. A case study of the east coast of Korea was conducted, and the dependencies between wave height, wave period, water level, storm duration and storm interarrival time were investigated using Kendall's tau correlation coefficient. As a result of the study, only wave height, wave period, and storm duration appeared to be correlated.

  • Blocking refers to a class of weather phenomena appearing in the mid and high latitudes, whose characteristics are blocked airflow of persistence. Frequently found over the Pacific and Atlantic regions of the Northern Hemisphere, blocking affects severe weather in the surrounding areas with different mechanisms depending on the type of blocking patterns. Along with lots of studies about persistent weather extremes focusing on the specific types of blocking, a new categorization using Rossby wave breaking has emerged. This study aims to apply this concept to the classification of blockings over the Pacific and examine how different wave breakings specify the associated cold weather in the Korean peninsula. At the same time, we investigate a strongly developing ridge around the Pacific by designing a new detection algorithm, where a reversal method is modified to distinguish ridge-type blocking patterns. As result, Kamchatka blocking (KB) and strong ridge over the Central Pacific are observed the most frequently during 20 years (2001~2020) of the studied period, and anomalous low pressures with cold air over the Korean Peninsula are accompanied by blocking events. When it considers the Rossby wave breaking, cyclonic wave-breaking is dominant in KB, which generates low-pressure anomalies over the Korean Peninsula. However, KB with anticyclone wave breaking appears with the high-pressure anomalies over the Korean Peninsula and it generates the warm temperature anomaly. Lastly, the low-pressure anomalies are also generated by the strong ridge over the Central Pacific, which persists for approximately three days and give a significant impact on cold surge on the Korean Peninsula.

  • When the pumps are started or stopped for the operation or tripped due to the power failure, the hydraulic transients occur as a result of the sudden change in velocity. The field tests on the waterhammer were carried out for Pangyo booster pumping station in which had six booster pumps and two in-line pumps with the motor of output 1,700 kW, respectively. The booster pumping station was equipped with the pump control valve as the main surge suppression device, and the surge relief valve as auxiliary one. But the pump control valve had not early controlled in the planned closing mode, the slamming occurred to the valve of which abruptly closed during the large reverse flow. Because the positive pressure wave caused by the pump failure was superposed on the slam surge, the upsurge increased so extremely that the pump control valve was damaged. After the air chambers were additionally installed in the booster pumping station, it was preyed that the water supply system acquire the safety and reliability on the pressure surge.

  • To investigate the effects of ocean conditions on the thermal stress and deformation caused by thermal stratification of a pressurizer surge line in a floating nuclear power plant (FNPP), the finite element simulation platform ANSYS Workbench is utilized to conduct the fluid-solid-thermal coupling transient analysis of the surge line under normal "wave-out" condition (no motion) and under ocean conditions (rolling and pitching), generating the transient response characteristics of temperature distribution, thermal stress and thermal deformation inside the surge line. By comparing the calculated results for the three motion conditions, it is found that ocean conditions can significantly improve the thermal stratification phenomenon within the surge line, but may also result in periodic oscillations in the temperature, thermal stress, and thermal deformation of the surge line. Parts of the surge line that are more susceptible to thermal fatigue damage or failure are determined. According to calculation results, the improvements are recommended for pipeline structure to reduce the effects of thermal oscillation caused by ocean conditions. The analysis method used in this study is beneficial for designing and optimizing the pipeline structure of a floating nuclear power plant, as well as for increasing its safety.

  • Numerical simulations of the storm surge and waves induced by the Typhoon Bolaven incident on the west sea of Korea in 2012 are performed using the JMA-MSM weather field provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency, and the calculated surge heights are compared with the time history observed at harbours along the various coasts of Korea. For the waves occurring coincidentally with the storm surges the calculated significant wave heights are compared with the data measured using the wave buoys operated by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency and the Korea Meteorological Administration. Additional simulations are also performed based on the pressure and wind fields obtained using the best track information provided by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, and the calculated results are compared and analyzed. The waves and storm surges calculated using JMA-MSM wether field agree well with the observations because of the better reflection of the topography and the pre-background weather field. On the other hand, the calculated results based on the weather fields produced using the JTWC best track information show some limitations of the general trend of the variations of wave and surge heights. Based on the results of this study it is found that the reliable weather fields are essential for the accurate simulation of storm surges and waves.

  • High waves and storm surges due to tropical cyclones cause great damage in coastal areas; therefore, accurately predicting storm surges and high waves before a typhoon strike is crucial. Meteorological forcing is an important factor for predicting these catastrophic events. This study presents an improved methodology for determining accurate meteorological forcing. Typhoon Chaba, which caused serious damage to the south coast of South Korea in 2016, was selected as a case study. In this study, symmetric and asymmetric parametric vortex models based on the typhoon track forecasted by the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) were used to create meteorological forcing and were compared with those models based on the best track. The meteorological fields were also created by blending the meteorological field from the symmetric / asymmetric parametric vortex models based on the MPAS-forecasted typhoon track and the meteorological field generated by the forecasting model (MPAS). This meteorological forcing data was then used given to two-way coupled tide-surge-wave models: Advanced CIRCulation (ADCIRC) and Simulating Waves Nearshore (SWAN). The modeled storm surges and waves correlated well with the observations and were comparable to those predicted using the best track. Based on our analysis, we propose using the parametric model with the MPAS-forecasted track, the meteorological field from the same forecasting model, and blending them to improve storm surge and wave prediction.

  • The solenoid valve in ABS hydraulic modulator is a two directional on-off valve and is controlled by around 100Hz high speed pulse width modulation. When the valve is switched from open state to closed state, noise and vibration due to pressure surge phenomena in the hydraulic line and wheel cylinder are made. In this study, we identify Pressure surge phenomenon in the braking process of a ABS, and investigate the way to reduce the phenomenon. For the purpose of theoretical analysis on the pressure surge in the closed state hydraulic line, characteristic curve method based on wave equation was utilized. To reduce the surge, high frequency control of 20kHz was attempted. The result showed that the surge pressure of 50% was reduced compared to one observed in the low frequency control. Duty variation of high frequency can control current of solenoid valve and prevent sudden change of displacement.
