  • This paper presents design parameter calculation methodology and its realization to construction for the 10/350${\mu}s$ lightning impulse current generator(ICG) modelled as double exponential function waveform with characteristic parameters ${\alpha},{\beta}$. Matlab internal function, "fzero" was applied to find ${\lambda}={\alpha}/{\beta}$ which is solution of nonlinear equation linearly related with two wave parameter $T_1$ and $T_2$. The calculation results for 10/350${\mu}s$ lightning impulse current show very good accuracy with error less 0.03%. Two type of 10/350${\mu}s$ ICGs based on the calculated design circuit parameters were fabricated by considering the load variation. One is applicable to the MOV based Surge protective device(SPD) for less 15 kA and the other is to test small resistive devices such as spark gap arrester and bonding device with maximum current capability 30 kA. The tested waveforms show error within 10% in comparison with the designed estimation and the waveform tolerance recommended in the IEC 61643-1 and IEC 60060-1.

  • This paper is performed to find out the stability of water-hammer in pipe line and pump station that is happened when additional water needs demanded. At first, the water supply construction project is planned to supply $6,000\;m^3/day$ through 17.9 km pipe line. But additional demand ($1,200\;m^3/day$) happened from Cheong-ra water reservoir. In this situation, air-chamber($4\;m^3$) and vacuum breaker valve(${\varphi}100\;mm$) are needed to prevent water-hammer. When the additional water is supplied, the existing facilities (air-chamber, vacuum breaker valve) are sufficient to alleviate shock not changing capacity alteration, judging from the airspace change and rise. Therefore, there is no problem for water-hammer by installing air-chamber($4\;m^3$) and vacuum breaker valve(${\varphi}100\;mm$) at the top of Yeo-ju hill.

  • More recently, unsteady flow in small-diameter pipes plays a major role in liquid propellantrocket systems, hydraulic and pneumatic control system, and elsewhere. And it has shown that line dynamics can have a marked effect on the hydraulic system characteristics. In this paper, transfer function of hydraulic lines with an accumulator and an outlet orifice is' developed and compared with experimental data from frequency response tests at various airvolume(V.) and the location of accumulator(ld1t), so that their performance may be correctly and easily predicted and the design of the systems incorporating them improved. The obtained results are as follows: 1. The dynamic response of hydraulic lines may be analyzed more accurately by use of the viscous term(22) in unsteady laminar flow. 2. There was good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results of this investigation, and hydraulic systems with liines included an accumulator can be analyzed more accurately by use of the pressure transfer function given by eq. (16). 3. For the mitigation of surge in hydraulic lines, it is more effective that the location ofaccumulator is close to the pipe outlet side. 4. According to the gas volume of accumulator is increased(the sealing pressure is close tomean line pressure), the damping effect of pressure wave is improved.

  • The impact of the next influenza pandemic is difficult to predict. It is dependent on how virulent the virus is, how rapidly it spreads from population to population, and the effectiveness of prevention and response efforts. Despite the uncertainty about the magnitude of the next pandemic, estimates of the health and economic impact remain important to aid public health policy decisions and guide pandemic planning for health and emergency sectors. Planning ahead in preparation for an influenza pandemic, with its potentially very high morbidity and mortality rates, is essential for hospital administrators and public health officials. The estimat ion of pandemic impact is based on the previous pandemics- we had experienced at least 3 pandemics in 20th century. But the epidemiologi cal characteristics - ie, start season, the impact of 1st wave, pathogenicity and virulence of the viruses and the primary victims of population were quite different from one another. I reviewed methodology for estimation and modelling of pandemic impact and described some nations's results using them in their national preparedness plans. And then I showed the estimates of pandemic influenza impact in Korea with FluSurge and FluAid. And, I described the results of pandemic modelling with parameters of 1918 pandemic for the shake of education and training of the first-line responder health officials to the epidemics. In preparing influenza pandemics, the simulation and modelling are the keys to reduce the uncertainty of the future and to make proper policies to manage and control the pandemics.

  • Surge motion of top-end platform induced by periodic wave makes marine flexible riser encounter equivalent sheared-oscillatory flow, under which the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) response will be more complicated than pure sheared flow or oscillatory flow cases. Based on a time domain force-decomposition model, the VIV response characteristics under sheared-oscillatory flows are investigated numerically in this paper. Firstly, the adopted numerical model is validated well against laboratory experiments under sheared flow and oscillatory flow. Then, 20 sheared-oscillatory flow cases with different oscillation periods and top maximum current velocities are designed and simulated. Under long and short oscillation period cases, the structural response presents several similar features owing to the instantaneous sheared flow profile at each moment, but it also has some different patterns because of the differently varying flow field. Finally, the effects and essential mechanism of oscillation period and top maximum current velocity on VIV response are discussed systematically.

  • A finite element model is developed for dynamic response prediction of floating offshore wind turbine systems considering coupling of wind turbine, floater and mooring system. The model employs Morison's equation with Srinivasan's model for hydrodynamic force and a non-hydrostatic model for restoring force. It is observed that for estimation of restoring force of a small floater, simple hydrostatic model underestimates the heave response after the resonance peak, while non-hydrostatic model shows good agreement with experiment. The developed model is used to discuss influence of heave plates and modeling of mooring system on floater response. Heave plates are found to influence heave response by shifting the resonance peak to longer period, while response after resonance is unaffected. The applicability of simplified linear modeling of mooring system is investigated using nonlinear model for Catenary and Tension Legged mooring. The linear model is found to provide good agreement with nonlinear model for Tension Leg mooring while it overestimates the surge response for Catenary mooring system. Floater response characteristics under different wave directions for the two types of mooring system are similar in all six modes but heave, pitch and roll amplitudes is negligible in tension leg due to high restraint. The reduced amplitude shall lead to reduction in wind turbine loads.

  • An auto weather-vaning system for a Dynamic Positioning (DP) vessel is proposed. When a DP vessel is operating, its position keeping is hindered by ocean environmental disturbances which include the ocean current, wave and wind. Generally, most ocean vessels have a longitudinal length that is larger than the transverse width. The largest load acts on the DP vessel by ocean disturbances, when the disturbances are incoming in the transverse direction. Weather-vaning is the concept of making the heading angle of the DP vessel head toward (or sway from) the disturbance direction. This enables the DP vessel to not only perform marine operations stably and safely, but also to maintain its position with minimum control forces (surge & sway components). To implement auto weather-vaning, a nonlinear controller and a disturbance observer are used. The disturbance observer transforms a real plant to the nominal model without disturbance to enhance the control performance. And the nonlinear controller deals with the kinematic nonlinearity. The auto weather-vaning system is completed by adding a weather-vaning algorithm to disturbance based controller. Numerical simulations of a semi-submersible type vessel were performed for the validation. The results show that the proposed method enables a DP vessel to maintain its position with minimum control force.

  • In order to utilize the marine environment in various fields such as renewable energy and offshore plant, it is necessary to utilize the far and deep ocean. However, there is still a limit to overcome and utilize the extreme deep-sea environment. Currently, the mooring system, which is the representative position control method of floating structure, has a structural and economic limit to expand the installation range to extreme deep-sea environment. Research has been conducted to utilize wave energy by developing floater using flapping foil as an alternative for station keeping in the deep sea by University of Ulsan. Based on the research, a model test was conducted for application to actual structures. In this study, we investigate how the floating body with passive flapping foils move in regular waves with different periods and study the condition of the model that can maintain its position within a certain range by overcoming the movement.
