  • Solubilization isotherms of TCE in the nonionic surfactants were studied. In this research, the maximum solubilization of TCE in the micelle was observed at the HLB of approximately 15. Increasing carbon number, solubilization of TCE was enhanced with the same ethoxylated alcohols number in brij surfactants.

  • This study was designed to evaluated the ecotoxicity to Closterium ehrenbergii using Nonionic surfactants based on its chemical structure. Nonionic surfactants ecotoxicity tended to increase with decreasing the number of ethylene oxide units. The Closterium ehrenbergii test was good in sensitivity and agreement with other published results. The use of Closterium ehrenbergii test offers promising potential for ecotoxicological applications.

  • The biodegradabilities of surfactants were measured for six kinds of shampoos in domestic market at present, and the phosphates and heavymetals are analyzed. Analysis results show that though they all come up to KS(Korean Industrial Standards), samples containing plenty of AOS and synthetic SLES have the lower biodegradability than the others. We knew the fact that thease smples are petroleum surfactants have the lower biodegradability than surfactants extracted naturally. All of them the contents of phosphates and heavymetals are excellent for limitation of the cosmetic standards.

  • The changes of surface activities in the aquaous solutions of mixed surfactants composed of linear sodium dodecylbenznesulfoate (LAS), polyoxyethylene nonyl phenylether (PE, EO=10) and polyethylene glycol monolauryl ether (LE, EO=25) have been studied. Addition of nonionic surfactants to LAS reduces the surface tension, especially at the lower concentration than cmc. The interfacial tension of olive oil/LAS was lower than the other surfactant solutions. The removal of triolein from cotton fabrics by nonionic surfactants and mixtures is higher than by LAS. The addition of NaCI to surfactant solutions even though reduces surface tension smaller but enthances oil removal more than that of $CaCl_2$.

  • A xylanase was purified from a commercial crude xylanase, Pulpzyme HC, and used for the bleaching of kraft pulp in the absence or in the presence of nonionic surfactants, Tween 20, Tween 80, and Igepal C930. The purified xylanase has a molecular weight of 23,500 as determined by a reducing SDS-PAGE. Tween 20 was most effective to enhance the efficiency of the enzymatic bleaching of kraft pulp by xylanase.

  • To improve the solubility properties of indomethacin, a poorly water-soluble drug, some attempts were made with surfactants, such as sodium deoxycholate, sodium laurylsulfate and polysorbate-80. The enhancement effect in solubility was found to be due to the micellar solubilization and dependent on the concentration of surfactants, pH and temperature. The mechanism of interaction was suggested to be attributed to the formation of mixed micelles between the drug and solubilizers.

  • When surfactants meet chlorine bleaches not only in the washing drums but also through the whole path from the stream to the river, it is not difficult to expect that they produce the harmful substances like DBPs. Furthermore considering wastewater that is contaminated by surfactants is used to discharge into drinking water sources via sewer system, it also can be imagined that residual surfactants would contribute to the some extent of DBPs' formation during chlorine disinfection in water treatment plants. Although the main behavior observed was the formation of chloroform during the reaction of LAS with free chlorine, the other manifest behaviors like the trends of pH, MBAS, free chlorine, the mole concentration of benzene ring and etc. were also investigated.

  • The adsorption of the anionic surfactants, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) anion surfactants form aqueous solutions with nonionic resins, Amberlite XAD-2, XAD-4 and XAD-7 at temperatures in 15~45$^{\circ}C$ range was studied. Several adsorption isotherm models were used to fit the experimental data, The best results were obtained with the Redlich-Peterson equation and the Freundlich model provided remarkably good fits. For a particular resin at a particular temperature, SDBS was more extensively adsorbed than SLS. The highest adsorption were obtained with XAD-4 resin and the specific surface area of the resins plays a major role in adsorption of the surfactants. Estimations of the isosteric heat of adsorption were indicative of an exothermic process, and their magnitudes manifested a physisorption process.

  • General components and detergency of commercial shampoos have been investigated and the results are summerized in the following. Shampoos were analyzed for surfactants and additives by KS method and surfactants were confirmed by T.L.C. Considerable differences in amounts of non volatiles and surfactants were found. Three of them contain either lanoline or sterols as additives and in the three. propylene glycol was found in their liquid part. It was shown that predominant sufactant was anionic and in all, except one. a little ampholytic surfactant was detected. But, contrary to forecast, in only one a little of non ionic surfactant was detected. Detergency of shampoos was examined using artificially soiled wool muslin. Considerable difference was found, and all shampoos showed higher detergency than a synthetic powder type detergent for textiles. There were no significant correlation between detergency and amount of surfactants or suspending power of detergents.

  • In this work, we have investigated the effect of polyoxyethylene alkyl ester nonionic surfactants on percutaneous permeation enhancement of a model drug, ketoprofen. We also investigated the mechanism involved in the enhancement using impedance and solubility measurement. Three groups of nonionic surfactants with different ethylene oxide content were studied. The permeation results showed that all surfactants enhanced the percutaneous absorption, irrespective of the molecular weight. The permeation results from PEG-45 monostearate (PEGMS45) were rather unexpected. Impedance and solubility results indicate that the mechanism involved in the enhancement of permeation by PEG-10 monooleate (PEGMO10) and PEGMS45 is rather different. The results from PEGMS45 suggest that it could be a potential candidate as a skin penetration enhancer with high molecular weight, which may poses less skin irritation and systemic side effect than the smaller surfactant molecules. Overall, this work provided some useful information on percutaneous transport enhancement and the mechanistic insights involved in skin permeation for these nonionic surfactants.
