The effect of various surfactants on the absorption of antipyrine was studied using goldfish and rat. The results are as follows. The threshold concentration of antipyrine was reduced by various surfactants. Overturn time and death time of goldfish, in solution containing different concentration of antipyrine was reduced by the presence of various surfactants. Plots of reciprocal death time versus antipyrine concentration were linear with a positive concentration intercept such as minimum effective concentration. The absorption of antipyrine from rat small intestine was increased by administration with surfactants. As results, is believed to be one of rendering the goldfish membrane or rat small intestine more permeable to antipyrine.
The biodegradability of some anionic surfactants were investigated using biological oxygen consumption measurement at different temperatures. As test surfactants, soap, alkyl sulfate (AS), alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS), alkyl polyoxyethylene sulfate (AES), linear alkylbezene sulfonate(LAS), microbial surfactants such as sophorose lipid (sopholipid) and spiculisporic acid (S-acid), were used. The test solution were incubated at $5^{\circ}C$, $18^{\circ}C$ and $32^{\circ}C$, respectively. The comparative rates of biodegradation were in accordance with the results obtained from the surface tension measurement and methylene blue method. The results of comparative blodegradabilities of the surfactants were as follows; soap, AS>AES>AOS>LAS at $18^{\circ}C$ and $32^{\circ}C$. However, at$ 5^{\circ}C$, the biodegradation rate of soap was better than other surfactants. Considering the actual environment of the river, it was concluded that the biological oxygen consumption rate method at lower temperature was more practical than the current method such as methylene blue assay with adapted shaking flask culture at $25^{\circ}C$
The objectives of this paper are to analyze simultaneous heat and mass transfer performance for a plate type bubble absorber with binary nanofluids numerically and to investigate the effects of binary nanofluids and surfactants on the size of the bubble absorber. The effective absorption ratio represents the effect of binary nanofluids and surfactants on the absorption performance. The kinds and concentrations of nano-particles and surfactants are considered as the key parameters. The results show that the addition of surfactants can reduce the size of absorber up to 74.4%, the application of binary nanofluids does the size up to 63.6%. Combination of binary nanofluids and surfactants can reduce the size of absorber up to 77.4%.
Oligomer type anionic surfactants(RmM-Na or RmD-Na} were synthesized from $C_{8}{\sim}C_{16}$ long chain alkylvinylether and maleic anhydride (or maleic diethylether). And also their fluorescent anionic surfactants (RmF- Na) were obtained from alkali neutralization which opens the lactone ring of the condensing materials produced by maleic anhydride alkylvinylether copolymer and 3-aminophenol. The measurement results for the surface active properties of water soluble oligomer type anionic surfactants with fluorescent structure (RmF-Na) exhibited a remarkable surface tension lowing property, foam breaking property, and a ernulsing power.

The aggregation between cationic and anionic surfactants was studied by turbidimetric and nephelometric methods with emphasis on facile analysis of the surfactants and understanding of the mixed micellization. The turbidimetric titration of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) showed maximum turbidity at equimolar composition in the SDS concentration range of 0.1-0.9 mM. The nephelometric titration of the same systems extended the limit of analysis to 0.001 mM. The sodium salts of decylsulfate and sulfonate gave similar maxima, but not at equimolar composition. The coexistence of equimolar aggregates and mixed micelles were shown over broad composition range. The aggregation and mixed micellization of the anionic/cationic surfactants mixtures depended sensitively on the hydrophobic character of the surfactants.
The sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ fatty acid vinyl ester oligomers, which are oligomer type surfactants were prepared by polymerization with fatty acid vinyl acetate. The ${\alpha}-sulfonation$ of fatty acid vinyl ester oligomers were carried by direct addition of sulfur trioxide. The dispersing performance of oligomer type anionic surfactants and sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) in the aqueous suspension of iron oxide and titanium dioxide particles was evaluated by particle size distribution and zeta-potential measurement. As results, the particles of iron oxide and titanium dioxide were flocculated by addition of small amount of oligomer type anionic surfactants and sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), then the flocks redispersed by more addition of oligomer type anionic surfactants and SDS. The flocculation, redispersion process was observed in lower concentration range of oligomer type anionic surfactants than SDS. Especially, the dispersing action of sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ palmitic acid vinyl ester oligomer was better than sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ lauric acid vinyl ester oligomer.
This study was aimed to formulate various phospholipid nanoparticles composed of different surfactants and to evaluate the deformability of the phospholipid vesicles as candidates of useful ultradeformable nanoparticles. In vitro deformability of the phospholipid nanoparticles was studied using an extruder under a certain pressure. The sizes of phospholipid nanoparticles, passed volumes, and concentrations of the phospholipids in suspensions before and after extrusion were measured. The deformability indexes were estimated by using passed volumes, sizes of phospholipid nanoparticles and concentrations of phospholipids. Conventional liposomes, placed under a certain pressure of an extruder, showed no passed volume indicating little deformability. Similar to conventional liposomes, phospholipid nanoparticles containing surfactants such as sodium taurocholate, Myrj 45, or Myrj 53 showed little deformability. In contrast, phospholipid nanoparticles composed of Tween 20, Triton X-100, or sodium deoxycholate showed higher deformability indexes than others. Taken together, the deformability of phospholpid nanoparticles could be significantly affected by the type of surfactants. Moreover, these results suggest that the deformability of phospholipid nanoparticles could be modulated by surfactants.
The effects of nonionic surfactant solutions of 0.1g/dL on detergency and liquid wetting/retention properties of soiled polyester/cotton(65/35) cloth were studied. Soiled polyester/cotton(65/35) cloth (EMPA 104) and 10 different nonionic surfactants (Span 20, Tween 20, 40, 60, 80, 21, 61, 81, 65, 85) were used in the study. The water retention and liquid retention capacity values of soiled cloth were decreased compared with those of unsoiled cloth. The wetting and water retention of soiled cloth improved with addition of surfactants, whereas water retention ratio(W/H) values didnot change markedly. Generally surfactants with low surface tension and high HLB (Hydrophile-lipophile balance) were more effective in improving the wetting/retention properties of soiled cloth. Nonionic surfactants having high ethylene oxide contents of 20 moles; i.e., Tween 20, 40, 60 & 80, showed better detergency than low ethylene oxide contents of 4 moles; i.e., Tween 21, 61 & 81. As HLB values of surfactants and $cos{\theta}$ of the soiled cloth increase, the detergency values of soiled cloth increased.
We examined the effect of polyether-type nonionic surfactants (Brij 35, Triton X-100, Tween 20 and Tween 80) on the potentiometric properties of sodium-, potassium- and calcium-selective membranes which are prepared with widely used ionophores and four kinds of polymer matrices [poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), polyurethane (PU), PVC/PU blend, and silicone rubber (SR)]. It was found that the PVC-based membranes, which provide the best performance among all other matrix-based membranes in the absence of nonionic surfactants, exhibited larger change in their potentiometric properties when nonionic surfactants are added to the sample solution. On the other hand, the sodium-selective SR-based membrane with calix[4]arene, potassium-selective PVC/PU- or SR-based membrane with valinomycin, and the calcium-selective SR-based membrane with ETH 1001 provide almost identical analytical performance in the presence and absence of Tween 20 or Tween 80 surfactants. The origin of nonionic surfactants effect was also investigated by interpreting the experimental results obtained with various matrices and ionophores. The results suggest that the nonionic surfactant extracted into the membrane phase unselectively form complexes with the primary and interfering ions, resulting in increased background potential and lower binding ability for the ionophore. Such effects should result in deteriorated detection limits, reduced response slopes and lower selectivity for the primary ions.
A new and unique class of nonionic surfactants was synthesized by reacting biological a-tocopherol with ethylene oxide for functional cosmetics. The structures were confirmed by Hl-UMR, FT-lR, TLC and elemental analysis. POV and conjugated diene value study for EPO showed POE(n)TE had antioxidative effect similar to tocopheryl acetate Protective effect on cell membrane in photohemolysis of POE(5)TE, POE(10)TE and POE(18)TE were slightly lower than tocopherol but higher than nonoxynol-12, and POE(10)TE had UV absorption power comparable with tocopherol and homosalate. Biological activity of the hydrophobic group of the new surfactants make them unique and different from those of conventional nonionic surfactants Systematic safety evaluations of POE(n)TEs on the skin and eye proved that they are as safe as tocopherol. The results of physicochemical study showed POE(10)TE had the lowest CMC value, POE(18)TE had the maximum surface tension reduction and the highest foam volume and POE(n)TEs had various HLB values by the degree of ethoxylation. The test resul Is of technological and practical applications of these surfactants for cosmetics showed some POE(n)TEs were superior to conventional surfactants. POE(5)TE in W/O emulsions, POE(10)TE and POE(12)TE in O/W emulsions, POE(12)TE in dispersions, POE(18)TE in solubilizations and POE(50)TE in gelations were shown to be excellent which was considered due to the structural characteristic and formation of liquid crystals of POE(n)TEs. By the development and applications of these excel lent multi-functional surfactants, innovative functional cosmetics were successfully formulated.
