The Behavior of Anionic Surfactant Calfax 16L-35 in Electrokinetic Remediation

  • Surfactant-enhanced electrokinetic (EK) remediation is an emerging technology that can effectively remove hydrocarbons from low-permeability soils. In this study, the electrokinetic remediation using Calfax 16L-35 was conducted for the removal of phenanthrene from kaolinite. An anionic surfactant Calfax 16L-35 was used at concentrations of 5, 15, and 30g/L to enhance the solubility of phenanthrene. When the surfactant solution was applied to EK system, low electrical potential gradient was maintained because of its ions. Even when the surfactant concentration was high, the removal efficiency of phenanthrene was low After the operation, most of surfactants were remained in soil and there were few in effluent. This phenomena was observed because the migration of Calfax 16L-35 from cathode to anode was predominant over electroosmotic flow which moved in opposite direction. Therefore, the anionic surfactant Calfax 16L-35 is considered to be improper in surfactant - enhanced electrokinetic remediation.

  • The long term drag reduction characteristics of Habon-G solution were investigated in the KIER pilot-scaled district heating simulation system. Test runs were implemented for 30 days without interruption. Pressure drop, flow rate and power consumption of surfactant (Habon-G) solution were regularly observed and compared with those of plain water. The experimental results suggest that the surfactant can be effectively applied to the DH transmission system for considerably long period wthout significant loss of its drag reduction capability even though the concentration of the additive may gradually decrease in the first stage of the experiment because of absorption.

  • This research was concerned with the enhancement of heat transfer by surfactant added to the aqueous solution of LiBr. Different horizontal tubes were tested with and without an additive of normal octyl alcohol. The test tubes were a bare tube, floral tube, hydrophilic tube. The additive concentration was about $0.05{\sim}5.5mass%$. The heat transfer coefficient was measured as a function of solution flow rate in the range of $0.01{\sim}0.034 kg/ms$. The experimental result were compared with cases without surfactant. The enhancement of heat transfer by Marangoni convection effect which was generated by addition of the surfactant is observed in each test tube.

Mixed Micellization of Anionic Ammonium Dodecyl Sulfate and

  • In aqueous mixtures of cationic OTAC (octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) and anionic ADS (ammonium dodecyl sulfate) surfactants, mixed micelles were formed at low (< 0.2 wt %) total surfactant concentrations. For these mixtures mixed micelliza tion and interaction of surfactant molecules were examined. Mixed critical micelle concentration (CMC), thermodynamic potentials of micellization, and minimum area per surfactant molecule at the interface were obtained from surface tensiometry and electrical conductometry. The mixed micellar compositions and the estimation of interacting forces were determined on the basis of a regular solution model. The CMCs were reduced, although not substantial, and synergistic behavior of the ADS and OTAC in the mixed micelles was observed. The CMC reductions in this anionic/cationic system were comparable to those in nonionic/anionic surfactant systems. The interaction parameter $\beta$ of the regular solution model was estimated to be -5 and this negative value of $\beta$ indicated an overall attractive force in the mixed state.

계면활성제를 이용한 향상된 EK 정화 시 PAH의 제거

  • This paper presented to phenanthrene removal of electrokinetic(EK) remediation and enhanced EK remediation with bench scale test. The experiments were carried out on mixture soil with phenanthrene as the test compound. The EK remediation experiments were conducted under controlled voltage. Surfactant solution was constantly supplied at the anode reservoir with constant concentration. Results showed that phenanthrene was removed little in EK remediation. Surfactant helped phenanthrene moving and cumulated in cathode region. Moving effect was increased with surfactant concentration.

계면활성제를 이용한 오염대수층의 선택적 폭기기술 (Air-sparging Technology for Remediation of Specific Aquifer Layer Using Surfactant)

  • 본 연구는 전통적인 지하 대수층 폭기기술을 시행하는 데 있어서 대수층의 특정층에 미리 수용액상 계면활성제를 수평방향으로 도입함으로써 오염물질이 실제로 존재하는 특정 지층으로 선택적으로 폭기되도록 하여 최소한의 공기량으로 오염물질 제거 효율을 극대화 하는 기술을 개발하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구에서는 균일질 모래로 충진된 2차원 상자 모델을 대수층 모사를 위하여 사용하였으며, 저농도(100 mg/L)의 음이온계 계면활성제(sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate) 수용액을 대수층의 표면장력을 조절하는 데 사용되었다. 실험은 첫째, 계면활성제가 처방되지 않은 경우, 둘째, 공기도입부 근처에 계면활성제 용액이 도입된 경우, 그리고 셋째, 공기도입부와 토양표면의 중간부분에 계면활성제 용액이 도입된 경우의 세 부분으로 구성되어 실시되었다. 실험 결과, 계면활성제가 도입된 경우 계면활성제가 투입되지 않은 경우에 비하여 최고 5배에 해당하는 현저한 폭기영향권의 확대가 관찰되었다. 또한 계면활성제가 도입되지 않았을 때에는 폭기영향권의 범위가 도입유량에 거의 영향을 받지 않았으나 계면활성제가 도입된 경우 폭기영향권은 도입유량에 비례하는 것으로 나타났다. 특기할만한 것은 폭기영향권이 계면활성제가 도입된 수평층을 중심으로 형성되어 이 부분에 집중되어 존재하는 오염물질의 제거에 매우 유리할 수 있다는 점이다. 현재 까지 대수층 폭기기술이 도입공기의 수평확산을 유도하는 기술이 개발되어 있지 않으므로 본 연구는 기존의 대수층 폭기 복원기술의 효율을 획기적으로 개선할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Imidazoline 양이온 계면활성제의 계면 특성 (Interfacial Properties of Imidazoline Cationic Surfactant)

  • 본 연구에서는 섬유 유연제, 분산제, 대전방지제, 표백 활성제, 유화제 등으로 널리 사용되고 있는 이미다졸린 양이온 계면활성제의 계면 특성을 측정하였다. 계면활성제의 CMC는 약 $6{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$ 이고 CMC에서의 표면장력은 약 32 mN/m이며, 또한 이미다졸린 계면활성제의 표면장력은 계면활성제 농도에 관계없이 비교적 일정하고, 일정한 계면활성제 농도 조건 하에서 수용액의 pH가 증가하면 표면장력은 감소하였다. 1 wt% 계면활성제 수용액과 n-dodecane 오일 사이의 계면장력은 약 0.01 mN/m이고 평형에 도달하는 시간은 pH에 관계없이 거의 일정하였다. $30{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ 의 온도 범위에서 계면활성제 수용액은 pH에 관계없이 마이셀 수용액의 $L_1$만을 형성하였고 계면활성제-물-오일로 이루어진 3성분 시스템은 lower phase 마이크로에멀젼을 포함한 2상 영역만이 존재하였다. 1 wt% 계면활성제 수용액의 거품 안정성은 수용액의 pH가 증가할수록 증가하며, 이러한 결과는 pH가 증가함에 따라 1 wt% 계면활성제의 표면장력이 감소하는 결과와 일관된 경향을 나타내었다. QCM(quartz crystal microbalance) 측정에 의하면 계면활성제 흡착은 농도 증가에 따라 증가하며, pH 증가에 따라 감소하였다. 또한 마찰 계수 측정으로부터 수용액의 pH가 알칼리 조건 하에서 이미다졸린 양이온 계면활성제의 섬유 유연 효과가 가장 우수함을 알 수 있었다.

음이온/비이온 계면활성제의 미셀상승 효과 (Synergistic Effect of Mixed Anionic/Nonionic Surfactant Micelles)

  • A proposed method of determining the composition of mixed micelles in equilibrium with monomer of known composition is described. The systems were sodium ${\alpha}-sulfonated$ dodecanoyl ethyl esther (${\alpha}-SR_{12}Et$) or sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)-polyoxyethylene 23 lauryl ether (Brij 35) un water and in 0.1M sodium chloride solution at $25^{\circ}C$. This technique applies the Gibbs-Duhem equation to the mixed micelles, which is treated as a pseudophase. This proposed methodology, which needs only critical micelle concentration data as a function of monomer composition, is applied to an anionic/nonionic surfactant pair. The calculated monomer-micelle equilibrium is found to be very similar to the much-used regular solution for nonideal systems.

Electrokinetic Soil Flushing with Nonionic Surfactant for Removal of Phenanthrene

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are representative hydrophobic organic carbons (HOCs). Surfactant-enhanced electrokinetic (EK) remediation is an innovative in-situ technology that can effectively remove HOCs from low-permeability soils. In this study, the electrokinetic remediation using Tergitol 15-S-12, a nonionic surfactant, was conducted for the removal of phenanthrene from kaolinite. Tergitol 15-S-12 was used at concentrations of 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 7.5 g/L to enhance the solubility of phenanthrene. When the surfactant solution was applied to EK system, high electrical potential gradient was maintained and the amount of electroosmotic flow decreased. Removal efficiency of phenanthrene was proportional to the concentration of Tergitol 15-S-12 because the solubility and mobility of phenanthrene was enhanced by surfactant micelle. Therefore, the suitable concentration of nonionic surfactant Tergitol 15-S-12 is expected to improve the removal efficiency of PAHs in EK remediation.

  • The effects of surfactants and concentration of NaOH in surfactant solution on the removal of free fatty acid soil from cotton fabrics were investigated. Cotton fabrics were soiled with palm itic acid which is the most common fatty acid found in natural oily soil and washed in Lauder-ometer with various types of surfactant with or without NaOH. The rate of soil removal was estimated by analyzing palmitic acid contents in fabric before ar d after washing. Analysis of palmitic contents was made by extracting palmitic acid with azeotropic mixture of alcohol-benzene and the extracts were titrated with standard NaOH solution. It was shown that the types of surfactant are important factor in free fatty acid removal and the efficiency increases in the following order: SLS$90\%$ of initial sorption. In relation to the mechanism of detergency, the suspending and emulsifying power of surfactants were also examined. From the results of this experiments, it could be concluded that the soap formation with alkali and the suspending power of surfactant arc significant factors in free fatty acid soil removal, but the emulsifying power of it is neglizible.
