Phase behavior for the mixed aqueous surfactant systems of cationic octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC)/anionic ammonium dodecyl sulfate (ADS)/water was examined. Below the total surfactant concentrations of 1.5 m molal, mixed micelles were formed. At the total surfactant concentrations higher than 1.5 m molal, there appeared a region where mixed micelles and vesicles coexist. As the surfactant concentration increased, the systems looked very turbid and much more vesicles were observed. The vesicles were spontaneously formed in this system and their existence was observed by negative-staining transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and encapsulation efficiency of dye. The vesicle region was where the molar fraction α of ADS to the total mixed surfactant was from 0.1 to 0.7 and the total surfactant concentration was above 5 × 10-4 molality. The size and structure of the vesicles were determined from the TEM microphotographs and the SANS data. Their diameter ranged from 450 nm to 120μm and decreased with increasing total surfactant concentration. The lamellar thickness also decreased from 15 nm to 5 nm with increasing surfactant concentration and this may be responsible for the decrease in vesicle size with the surfactant concentration. The stability of vesicles was examined by UV spectroscopy and zeta potentiometry. The vesicles displayed long-term stability, as UV absorbance spectra remained unchanged over two months. The zeta potentials of the vesicles were large in magnitude (40-70 mV) and the observed longterm stability of the vesicles may be attributed to such high ζ potentials.
The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of surfactant on the onset of Marangoni convection adapting a non-linear surface equation of state. The surface tension gradient with respect to the absorbate concentration, ${\gamma}$, is linearly related to the surface concentration of a surfactant with a coeffcient $x_{A}$. The numerical results show that the role of the initial surfactant concentration to Marangoni instability changes from the stabilizer to the destabilizer depending on the change of the sign of $x_{A}$ from negative to positive. It is concluded that for $x_{A}$>0 there is a critical modified Marangoni number of surfactant $M_{Ac}$$^{*}$ above which liquid layer is always unstable against long wave disturbances.rbances.
The fluid mechanics and heat transfer of surfactant turbulent pipe flows are characterized with particular emphasis on the effects of surfactant concentration and solution temperature on drag reduction and heat transfer reduction. The test fluids are the surfactant solutions of DR-IW616 supplied by Akzo Nobel Chemical in concentration of $100{\sim}3000ppm$. The solution temperatures studied are $5^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$. The critical values of surfactant concentration and solution temperature are clearly identified for drag reduction phenomena.
This study reports a surfactant-enhanced in-situ remediation treatment at a test site which is located in a hilly terrain. The leakage oils from a storage tank situated on the top of the hill contaminated soils and groundwater in the lower elevation. Sixteen vertical injection wells (11 m deep) were installed at the top of the hill to introduce 0.1-0.5 vol.% of non-ionic Tween-80 surfactant. The contaminated area that required remediation treatment was about $1,650\;m^2$. Two cycles of injecting surfactant solution followed by water were repeated over approximately 7.5 months: first cycle with 0.5 month of surfactant injection followed by 3 months of water injection, and second cycle with 1 month of surfactant followed by 3 months of water injection. The seasonal fluctuation in groundwater table was also considered in the selection of periods for surfactant and water injection. The results showed that the initial Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration of 1,041 mg/kg (maximum 3,605 mg/kg) was reduced significantly down to 76.6 mg/kg in average. After 2nd surfactant injection process finished, average TPH concentration of soils was reduced to 7.5% compared to initial concentration. Also, average BTEX concentration of soils was reduced to 10.8%. This resultes show that the surfactant enhanced in-situ remediation processes can be applicable to LNAPL contaminated site in field scale.
The transport of Chromium(Vl) ion from waste water throughl the liquid surfactant membrane containing tri-n-octylamine as a carrier, was analyzed by a slab model and was investigated through experiments. For the experiment of membrane stability, concentrations of surfactant and liquid parafnn oil were analyzed. Extraction euperiments were carried out to observe the effect of system variables, such as stirring speed, concentration of carrier, and NaOH in internal aqueous phase, and concentrations of H$_2$SO$_4$and initial chromium(VI) ion in external aqueous phase at $25^{\circ}C$. It is concluded that the most stable formation of liquid membrane emulsion was obtained when surfactant concentration is above 3 wt. % and liquid parafnn oil concentration is 50 vol. %. The transport of chromium(VI) ion in bacth extractor increased with increasing carrier concentration, the volume ratio of emulsion to external aqueous phases, and initial concentration of chromium(VI) ion under the optimum stirring speed of chromium(VI) ion below 2 ppm. The theoretical equation on the transport of chromium(Vl) ion agreed well with the experimental results.
Surfactant enhanced in-situ soil flushing was peformed to remediate the soil and groundwater at an oil contaminated site, and the effluent solution was treated by the chemical treatment process including DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation). A section from the contaminated site(4.5m$\times$4.5m$\times$6.0m) was selected for the research, which was composed of heterogeneous sandy and silt-sandy soils with average Hydraulic conductivity of 2.0$\times$10$^{-4}$ cm/sec. Two percent of sorbitan monooleate(POE 20) and 0.07% of iso-prophyl alcohol were mixed for the surfactant solution and 3 pore volumes of surfactant solution were injected to remove oil from the contaminant section. Four injection wells and two extraction wells were built in the section to flush surfactant solution. Water samples taken from extraction wells and the storage tank were analyzed by GC(gas-chromatography) for TPH concentration with different time. Five pore volumes of solution were extracted while TPH concentration in soil and groundwater at the section were below the Waste Water Discharge Limit(WWDL). Total 18.5kg of oil (TPH) was removed from the section. The concentration of heavy metals in the effluent solution also increased with the increase of TPH concentration, suggesting that the surfactant enhanced in-situ flushing be available to remove not only oil but heavy metals from contaminated sites. Results suggest that in-situ soil flushing and chemical treatment process including DAF could be a successful process to remediate contaminated sites distributed in Korea.
This study was designed to investigate the influence of ratio of anionic/nonionic surfactant mixture on detergency of particulate soil under various solutions. The detergency of the particulate soil was determined by adhesion of particle to fabric and its removal from fabric separately. The PET fabric and ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$were used as materials of textile and model of particulate soil, respectively. The detergency was investigated as a function of surfactants concentration, ionic strength, kinds of electrolyte and mole numbers of oxyethylene ether of nonionic surfactant in different ratio of anionic/nonionic surfactant mixture. Although some deviations exist, the adhesion of particle to fabric generally increased with decreasing its removal from fabric. The detergency of particulate soil on PET fabric was relatively higher in anionic/nonionic surfactant mixed solution than in each single surfactant solution, but the influence of ratio of anionic/nonionic surfactant mixture on detergency of particulate soil was low. Generally the detergency of particulate soil on fabric was at its maximum at 0.1% surfactant concentration, $1{\times}10^{-3}$ ionic strength, $Na_5P_3O_{10}$ electrolytes and 10 mole numbers of oxyethylene ether of nonionic surfactant, regardless of ratio of anionic/nonionic surfactant mixture.
This paper presented to phenanthrene removal of electrokinetic(EK) remediation and enhanced EK remediation with bench scale test. The experiments were carried out on mixture soil with phenanthrene as the test compound. The EK remediation experiments were conducted under controlled voltage. Surfactant solution was constantly supplied at the anode reservoir with constant concentration. Results showed that phenanthrene was removed little in EK remediation. Surfactant helped phenanthrene moving and cumulated in cathode region. Moving effect was increased with surfactant concentration.
Surfactant-enhanced electrokinetic remediation is an emerging technology that can effectively remove hydrocarbons from low-permeability soils. In this study, the electrokinetic remediation using APG(alkyl polyglucoside) was conducted for the removal of phenanthrene from kaolinite. APG, which was an environmentally compatible and non-toxic surfactant, was used at concentrations of 5, 15, and 30g/1 to enhance the solubility of phenanthrene. Also an electrolyte solution was used for considering a relation between electrical potential gradient and removal efficiency of phenanthrene. When the electrolyte solution was used, it represented low electrical potential gradient, but the removal efficiency was lower than that of no electrolyte system. Removal efficiency of phenanthrene in EK process using surfactant solution depended on concentration of surfactant. Because surfactant increased the solubility and the mobility of phenanthrene, when surfactant concentration was high, high removal efficiency was observed.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are representative hydrophobic organic carbons (HOCs). Surfactant-enhanced electrokinetic (EK) remediation is an innovative in-situ technology that can effectively remove HOCs from low-permeability soils. In this study, the electrokinetic remediation using Tergitol 15-S-12, a nonionic surfactant, was conducted for the removal of phenanthrene from kaolinite. Tergitol 15-S-12 was used at concentrations of 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 7.5 g/L to enhance the solubility of phenanthrene. When the surfactant solution was applied to EK system, high electrical potential gradient was maintained and the amount of electroosmotic flow decreased. Removal efficiency of phenanthrene was proportional to the concentration of Tergitol 15-S-12 because the solubility and mobility of phenanthrene was enhanced by surfactant micelle. Therefore, the suitable concentration of nonionic surfactant Tergitol 15-S-12 is expected to improve the removal efficiency of PAHs in EK remediation.
