Thermally treated Korean ilmenite was characterized and used for water splitting to obtain hydrogen by photo-catalytic reaction. Experiments on specific surface area, X-ray diffraction and EDS showed that the formation of FeO, $Fe_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ ilmenite crystal surface increased the specific surface area with maximum value, phase change of $TiO_2$ at $600^{\circ}C$ and hetrogeneity. The hydrogen evolved in caustic soda solution on these ilmenites indicated that there was a maximum yield point at about $600^{\circ}C$. This point was explained with the change of the surface area due to sintering of newly formed FeO, $Fe_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$, as well as crystal phase change of anatase to rutile at $600^{\circ}C$. Produced hydrogen increased also as the concentration of caustic soda, but become constant at the near 1N solution.
This study presents the hydrogeochmical investigation to know the effect of geology and sources for water quality in small potable water supply system at rural area. The results of water quality in Geumsan area showed the 3.2% of water samples exceeded the limit of drinking water standard by bacteria. The hydrochemical investigation results indicated the high EC, Ca and HCO$_3$ in surface water and metasedimentary rocks and this is caused by the dissolution of calc-slicate minerals of metasedimentary rocks.
Surface floating air cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) having horizontal flow was developed for the application of MFC technology. RVC (Reticulated vitreous carbon) coated with anyline was used as anode electrode and carbon cloth coated with Pt (5.0 g Pt/$m^2$, GDE LT250EW, E-TEK) was used as cathode electrode. As results of continuous operation with changing the flow rate from 4.3 mL/min to 9.5 mL/min, maximum power density of 4.5 W/$m^3$ was acquired at 5.4 mL/min, which was at 0.35 m/hr of flow velocity under anode electrode. When the ratio of cathode surface area to anode surface area($A_c/A_a$) was changed to 1.0, 0.5, and 0.25, the maximum power density of 2.7 W/$m^3$ was shown at the ratio of 1.0. As the ratio decreased from 1.0 to 0.25, the power density also decreased, which is caused by increasing the internal resistance resulted from reducing the surface area to contact with oxygen. Actually, internal resistances of the ratio of 1.0, 0.5, and 0.25 were 63.75${\Omega}$, 142.18${\Omega}$, and 206.12${\Omega}$, respectively.
Nonpoint source pollution of groundwater and subsurface water from irrigated agriculture is a major concern in many areas. In this study we aimed to investigate the effect of the water applied by irrigation in agricultural area on the transport of nitrogen and phosphorus originated from fertilizers applied to the surface of soil in agricultural activities. We first conducted investigation on the resdual concentrations of soil N and P in a selected agricultural area. And simulating the target area by column studies in the laboratory leaching extent of various components from the composite and urea fertilizers applied on the soil surface during irrigation was studied. Infiltration of water enhanced the leaching of nitrogen and phosphorus in both the rice paddy field soil and the patch soil. The downward N and P transport with infiltrating water was more pronounced in the patch soil column and the increased residual concentrations of N and P in the lower sections in the patch soil column was found with time.
The cool surface ratio could be used as a proxy of the overall thermal environment contributing to heat islands in urban area. This research proposes a comparative evaluation framework in an objective and quantitative way for measuring cool surface ratios. Two university campuses (Kyungpook National University: KNU, South Korea and UC Davis: University of California, Davis, USA) were selected as case study sites in order to monitor cool surface condition. Google Earth combined with digital maps realistically identified the major type of cool surfaces such as cool roofs and water bodies in the study area. Cool surfaces were sparsely identified over the KNU campus while the UC Davis campus was heavily covered by cool surfaces such as cool roofs and water bodies, resulting in almost four times more first-grade cool surfaces, as compared to KNU. It is confirmed that standard remote sensing technology can offer the viable method of measuring and comparing the campus-wide cool surface condition. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a valuable reference to initiate a nation-wide cool surface strategy since objective evidence has been provided based on area-wide measurement for the cool surface in the two university context.
Nowadays, the discharges of urban streams during dry season are depleted because the hydrologic cycle in the watershed has been destroyed due to the expansion of the impermeable area, the excessive groundwater pumping, climate change, and so forth. The streamflow depletion may bring out severe water quality problems. This research are to investigate the hydrologic characteristics and to develop a technology to restore sound hydrologic cycle of Anyangcheon watershed. For the hydrological cycle analysis of the Anyangcheon watershed, continuous simulations of urban runoff were performed for the upstream basin of Gocheok bridge whose basin area covered 4/5 of the whole catchment area. The increase of impervious area by urbanization was analysed and its effect on urban runoff was evaluated. The SWMM 5 (Storm Water Management Model 5) was used for the continuous simulation of urban runoff. The analysis results of urbanization effect on runoff are as follows: the surface runoff in 2000 increases to 65% of the whole precipitation whereas the surface runoff in 1975 amounts to 50% of the precipitation; the groundwater runoff in 2000 amounts to 7% and shows 6% decrease during the period from 1975 to 2000.
Reservoir storage and water level information is essential for accurate drought monitoring and prediction. In particular, the agricultural drought has increased the risk of agricultural water shortages due to regional bias in reservoirs and water supply facilities, which are major water supply facilities for agricultural water. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the available water capacity of the reservoir, and it is necessary to determine the water surface area and water capacity. Remote sensing provides images of temporal water storage and level variations, and a combination of both measurement techniques can indicate a change in water volume. In areas of ungauged water volume, satellite remote sensing image acts as a powerful tool to measure changes in surface water level. The purpose of this study is to estimate of reservoir storage and level variations using satellite remote sensing image combined with hydrological statistical data and the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI). Water surface areas were estimated using the Sentinel-2 satellite images in Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do from 2016 to 2018. The remote sensing-based reservoir storage estimation algorithm from this study is general and transferable to applications for lakes and reservoirs. The data set can be used for improving the representation of water resources management for incorporating lakes into weather forecasting models and climate models, and hydrologic processes.
Recently, Low Impact Development (LID) is being used in Korea to control urban runoff and nonpoint source pollution. In this study, we evaluated the reduction of surface runoff from a study area, as the effect of connecting three bioretention as LID-BMP. Surface runoff and storage volume of bioretention is estimated by the Curve Number (CN) method. In this study, the storage volume of bioretention is divided by the volume of surface runoff and precipitation which directly enters the bioretention. The ratio of captured surface runoff volume to storage volume is highly influenced by the ratio of drainage area to surface area of bioretention. The high bioretention surface area-to-drainage area ratio captures more surface runoff. The ratio of 1.2 captures 51~54% of the total surface runoff, ranging from 5-30cm of bioretention depth; a ratio of 6.2 captures 81~85%. Three connected bioretentions could therefore captures much more runoff volume, ranging from $35.8{\sim}167.3m^3$, as compared to three disconnected bioretentions at their maximum amount of precipitation with non-effluent from the connecting three bioretentions. Hence, connecting LID-BMPs could improve the removal efficiencies of surface runoff volume and nonpoint source pollution.
