  • In this study, the mechanical properties of boronized 316L austenitic stainless steel have been investigated. Boronizing was carried out in solid medium consisting of Ekabor powder at $900^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2, 4 and 8 hours, respectively. The properties of sample were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, Glow discharge spectrometer, micro-hardness tester and ball-on-disk wear tester. Increasing the boronizing time and temperature, the hardness of boronized samples were shown over Hv 2000 and the thickness of boride layers were also increased linearly. XRD patterns of samples were revealed the presence of borides such as FeB, $Fe_2B$, CrB, $Cr_2B$ and $Ni_3B$. Friction coefficient of boronized STS 316L was shown the low value at $900^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours, respectively.

  • Carbon-coated $TiO_2$ was prepared by $CCl_4$ solvent mixing method with the different heat treated temperatures (HTTs). Since the carbon layers derived from pitch on the $TiO_2$ particles were porous, the carbon-coated $TiO_2$ sample series showed a good adsorptivity. The values of BET surface areas measured were shown independently on the HTTs. The surface states by SEM present to the characterization of porous texture on the carbon-coated $TiO_2$ sample and carbon distributions on the surfaces. From XRD data, PT700 and PT750 were shown the X-ray diffraction patterns of the anatase $TiO_2$, but PT800 and PT850 were kept anatase-type structure even after heating at $800^{\circ}C$, though small amount of the rutile-type structure appears. The results of EDX microanalyses were observed for each sample show the spectra corresponding to almost all samples similar to C, O and Ti elements with an increase of HTTs. Finally, the excellent photoactivity of carbon-coated $TiO_2$ (especially, PT700 and PT750) could be attributed to the homogeneous coated carbon on the external surface and the structural anatase phase.

  • Ceramic oxide layers successfully were formed on the surface of cast Al alloys with high Si contents using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process in electrolytes containing Na2SiO3, NaOH, and additives. The microstructure of the oxide layers was systematically analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), and energy X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). XRD analysis indicated that the PEO untreated high-silicon Al alloys (i.e., 17.1 and 11.7 wt.% Si) consist of Al, Si and Al2Cu phases whereas Al2Cu phase selectively disappeared after PEO treatment. PEO process yielded an amorphous oxide layer with few second phases including γ-Al2O3 and Fe-rich phases. The corrosion behaviors of high-silicon Al alloys treated by PEO process were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and other electrochemical techniques (i.e., open circuit potential and polarization curve). Electroanalytical studies indicated that high-silicon Al alloys treated by PEO process have greater corrosion resistance than high-silicon alloys untreated by PEO process.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) lower extremity pattern on the dominant leg on muscle activity of the lower extremity supported by the ground. Methods: The subjects were 20 healthy males living in Busan. All subjects performed four direction PNF lower extremity patterns, and data were collected by surface electromyography from the gluteus medius (GM), tensor fascia latae (TFL), vastus medialis oblique (VMO), vastus lateralis oblique (VLO), and semitendinosus (STD) muscles of the opposite lower extremity during PNF lower extremity pattern. The PNF lower extremity pattern applied to the dominant leg was (1) flexion/adduction/external rotation with knee flexion; (2) extension/abduction/internal rotation with knee extension; (3) flexion/abduction/internal rotation with knee flexion; and (4) extension/adduction/external rotation with knee extension pattern, repeated 3 times per pattern and using the average value of the collected results. Collected muscle activity values were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, and post-hoc Tukey testing was performed to check between-group differences. The statistical significance level was set at α = 0.05. Results: GM and TFL flexion/abduction/internal rotation pattern with knee flexion was significantly higher than other patterns. VMO and VLO extension/adduction/external rotation pattern with knee extension was significantly higher than other patterns. STD flexion/adduction/external rotation pattern with knee flexion was significantly higher than other patterns. Conclusion: The study confirms differences in lower extremity muscle activity for the PNF lower extremity pattern, indicating that selective muscle contraction induction is possible using a pattern appropriate to the purpose of treatment.

  • An investigation of the effectiveness of the interface treatment when column concrete jacketing is performed is presented. Alternative methods of interface connection were used in order to investigate the performance of strengthened concrete columns. These connecting techniques involved roughening the surface of the original column, embedding steel dowels into the original column and a combination of these two techniques. The experimental program included three strengthened specimens, one original specimen (unstrengthened) and one as-built specimen (monolithic). The specimens represented half height full-scale old Greek Code (1950's) designed ground floor columns of a typical concrete frame building. The jackets of the strengthened specimens were constructed with shotcrete. All specimens were subjected to displacement controlled earthquake simulation loading. The seismic performance of the strengthened specimens is compared to both the original and the monolithic specimens. The comparison was performed in terms of strength, stiffness and hysteretic response. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the strengthening methods and indicate that the proper construction of a jacket can improve the behaviour of the specimens up to a level comparable to monolithic behaviour. It was found that different methods of interface treatment could influence the failure mechanism and the crack patterns of the specimens. It was also found that the specimen that combined roughening with dowel placement performed the best and all strengthened columns were better at dissipating energy than the monolithic specimen.

  • The effect of fluoride pretreatment upon root resorption after delayed replantation was studied in beagle dogs. Upper and lower incisors were extracted and bench dried for 45 minutes. 1% Stannous fluoride solution, 2% neutral sodium fluoride gel and 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride gel were used for the pre-treatment of replanted root surface in the experimental groups. Replantation was done with no treatment in control group. After of an experimental periods 3 weeks, animals were sacrificed by perfusion followed by sample preparation. A histomorphometric method was applied for evaluation of tissue reactions observed in each group under light microscope. Scanning electron microscopic observation was done to find out any different surface topography between groups. The results were as follows: 1. Fluoride-treated groups showed in general the better healing patterns than untreated control group. 2. Comparisons between three experimental groups revealed the general superiority of APF-treated group over the other groups in terms of tissue healing reaction by showing the highest frequency in uncomplicated healing pattern and surface resorption and the lowest in inflammatory resorption, but with no statistical significance(p>.05). 3. Scanning elecron micrographs showed the irregular distribution of resorption cavities and the attached bone of variable size and shape in all groups. 4. It can be concluded that the types of fluoride did not have significant impact on the early tissue reactions after delayed replantation under the condition of the present experiment.

  • $BaTiO_3$ ceramic thin films were manufactured by rf/dc magnetron sputter technique. We have investigated crystal structure, surface morphology and PTCR(positive-temperature coefficient of resistance) characteristics of the specimen depending on second heat-treatment temperatures. Second heat treatments of the specimen were performed in the temperature range of 400 to $1350^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction patterns of $BaTiO_3$ thin films show that the specimen heat treated below $600^{\circ}C$ is an amorphous phase and the one heat treated above $1100^{\circ}C$ forms a poly-crystallization. In the specimen heat-treated at $1300^{\circ}C$, a lattice constant ratio (c/a) was 1.188. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) image of $BaTiO_3$ thin films of the specimen heat treated in between 900 and $1100^{\circ}C$ shows a grain growth. At $1100^{\circ}C$, the specimen stops grain-growing and becomes a poly-crystallization.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate comparisons of vastus medialis (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle activities according to different heights during drop landing in flatfooted adults. Methods: Fifteen subjects with a flat foot arch and 15 subjects with a normal feet arch were participated. Subjects performed a double limb drop landing task from 20, 40, and 60 cm heights. Surface electromyography was used to measure the muscle activities of the VMO and VL during drop landing. Results: There were significant differences of muscle activities in the VMO, VL, and the VMO and VL ratio between groups. The electromyography values of VMO, VL, and the VMO and VL ratio in the normal group were significantly greater than in the flat foot group, and muscle activities and the VMO and VL ratio significantly increased with landing heights in the both groups. Conclusion: Our results indicated that muscle activity patterns of VOM and VL in the flat foot group were lower at heights than in the normal group, so calf tightness was negative effects on balance and gait ability, so assessment of muscle activation patterns in the knee extensors should be considered during exercise and treatment of flat feet.

  • The tracksite of dinosaurs and pterosaurs in Sanbuk-dong of Gunsan is the largest early Cretaceous dinosaur footprint fossil site in Korea, and all the footprints are important evidence indicating that large ornithopod and theropod dinosaurs inhabited the Korean peninsula during the early Cretaceous. The Sanbuk-dong site was covered with waterproof sheet in an outdoor environment until the installation of a protective enclosure in 2021. As a result, various factors such as shear force, load reduction, temperature and humidity fluctuations, acid rain, salinity and microorganisms have complexly interacted in the substrate of fossils, exacerbating the damage to footprints. For 159 footprints in 12 trackways among the footprints found in the site, the damage types were classified in detail and the level of each damage was assessed. The damages were classified into 6 types through the classification of deterioration degree of individual footprints. As a result of ultrasonic physical property evaluation on the surface of the fossil site, most of these footprints are in the completely weathered (CW) stage. Furthermore, various weathering patterns were observed in the study area, and surface contaminants were analyzed along the stratigraphy. Although the patterns of freshness and contaminants varied at different points within the fossil site, the chemical compositions were similar. Based on the results, an efficient conservation management system for dinosaur footprint fossils was established, and a conservation treatment type for each footprint was proposed.
