  • When the mouth of the Nakdong River, opens its floodgate, thousands of tons of litter should flown into the South Sea, moving towards nearby coast, thus causing serious social and economic damage. For this reason, in the present study, research was performed on one certain area in northeast coast of Geoje island, which is assumed as area damaged due to rainy season and typhoon in 2012, and research for trace of movement route was implemented by using buoy to identify characteristic of movement of floating debris caused from Nakdong River. Flows related to the movement of floating debris was also identified by analyzing ocean meteorological environment. As a result of the study, total 40 tons of litter composed of grasses and trees(or plants litter) were flown into Heungnam beach on 16th, Jul which is the rainy season. Plus, the location tracking buoy, which was dropped when the typhoon SANBA was coming, was passed by southern sea of Gadeok-do and was flown into Geoje beach 1 ~ 2 days after it was dropped. The wind direction was mostly northeasterly wind around the Geoje beach at the time the buoy and floating debris were flown into northeast coast and there was common sea surface currents which was flowing into the coast.

  • In this presentation, I talk about various fluid simulation methods that have been developed for computer graphics special effects since 1996. They are all based on CFD but sacrifice physical reality for visual plausability and time. But as the speed of computer increases rapidly and the capability of GPU (graphics processing unit) improves, methods for more physical realism have been tried. In this talk, I will focus on four aspects of fluid simulation methods for computer graphics: (1) particle level-set methods, (2) particle-based simulation, (3) methods for exact satisfaction of incompressibility constraint, and (4) GPU-based simulation. (1) Particle level-set methods evolve the surface of fluid by means of the zero-level set and a band of massless marker particles on both sides of it. The evolution of the zero-level set captures the surface in an approximate manner and the evolution of marker particles captures the fine details of the surface, and the zero-level set is modified based on the particle positions in each step of evolution. (2) Recently the particle-based Lagrangian approach to fluid simulation gains some popularity, because it automatically respects mass conservation and the difficulty of tracking the surface geometry has been somewhat addressed. (3) Until recently fluid simulation algorithm was dominated by approximate fractional step methods. They split the Navier-Stoke equation into two, so that the first one solves the equation without considering the incompressibility constraint and the second finds the pressure which satisfies the constraint. In this approach, the first step introduces error inevitably, producing numerical diffusion in solution. But recently exact fractional step methods without error have been developed by fluid mechanics scholars), and another method was introduced which satisfies the incompressibility constraint by formulating fluid in terms of vorticity field rather than velocity field (by computer graphics scholars). (4) Finally, I want to mention GPU implementation of fluid simulation, which takes advantage of the fact that discrete fluid equations can be solved in parallel.

  • This paper presents a robust slewing control of a flexible space structure based on sliding surface design. A sliding surface is designed for a single-axis rest-to-rest slewing in view of target angle, target angular velocity, and root monent of the flexible appendage. In comparison with the Lypunov control law, both controllers guarantee the stability and command tracking capabilities for nominal system. It is also shown that the designed control law provides further robustness to internal/external uncertainties. Extending the results of a single-axis maneuver, a sliding mode control law was sought for an arbitrary three-axis maneuver. Quaternion was used to determine the attitude of a space structure and sliding surfaces were designed for each axis, thereby a robust control law was derived considering the coupling effects between each rotational axis during the maneuver. Several numerical examples were demonstrated to show the effectiveness of the designed control law.

  • The purpose in having a control surface on a ship is to control the motion of the ship. The control surface may be composed entirely of a single movable surface or of a combination of fixed and movable portion A control surface has one sole function to perform in meeting its purpose, and that is to develop a control force in consequence of its orientation and movement relative to the water. The forces and moments generated as a result of this rotation and angle of attack then determine the maneuvering characteristics of the ship. In this paper the study of flapped rudder's 2-dimensional section was accomplished. Model tests had been carried out with different angles of attack of a main foil and flap's deflection angles to predict the performance of the flapped rudder and the 2 frame particle tracking method had been used to obtain the velocity distribution in the flow field $Re=2.8\times10^4$ had been used during the whole experiments and measured results had been compared with each other.

  • Recently, The diagnosis techniques of electric facilities are developed on live line. This paper describes the discharge characteristics of polymer insulator(EPDM A type). Keeping the facilities in good working order, the goal of this paper will provide the information to enable user to easily judge conditions of facilities on the spot. The performance of polymer insulator is assessed from the KS C IEC 60270 and CEA LWIWG-01(96)(Tracking Wheel Test). As the results, UV generation patterns of polymer insulator grow like a jellyfish shape follow the ramping voltage. Discharging UVs are detected at about 31.25% of breakdown voltage. Just then, dimension of UV image is about $0.84cm^{2}$. The dimension of max. UV image is about $297.4cm^{2}$ at $160kV(V_{bd})$. The position of UV generation due to surface discharge of polymer insulator is the center of insulator in the early, then moved the ground side and the last, UV image moved through the junction part of source side. Surface of aged polymer insulator is cracked and faded due to arc. UV absorption spectrum of polymer insulator are appeared the C-H bond of scissoring vib. at $1014cm^{-1}$ and C=O bond of recombination structure. Also, recombined UV absorption peak such as C-H, N-H, and O-H is detected at the $3321cm^{-1}$. Through the paper, there are inspection data which are the relations between surface discharge of polymer insulator and UV detecting image.

  • $CO_2$ is the most important trace gas related to climate change. Therefore, understanding surface carbon sources and sinks is important when seeking to estimate the impact of $CO_2$ on the environment and climate. CarbonTracker, developed by NOAA, is an inverse modeling system that estimates surface carbon fluxes using an ensemble Kalman filter with atmospheric $CO_2$ measurements as a constraint. In this study, to investigate the capability of CarbonTracker as an analysis tool for estimating surface carbon fluxes in Asia, an experiment with a nesting domain centered in Asia is performed. In general, the results show that setting a nesting domain centered in Asia region enables detailed estimations of surface carbon fluxes in Asia. From a rank histogram, the prior ensemble spread verified at observational sites located in Asia is well represented with a relatively flat rank histogram. The posterior flux in the Eurasian Boreal and Eurasian Temperate regions is well analyzed with proper seasonal cycles and amplitudes. On the other hand, in tropical regions of Asia, the posterior flux does not differ greatly from the prior flux due to fewer $CO_2$ observations. The root mean square error of the model $CO_2$ calculated by the posterior flux is less than the model $CO_2$ calculated by the prior flux, implying that CarbonTracker based on the ensemble Kalman filter works appropriately for the Asia region.

  • In limit equilibrium methods(LEM), all methods employ the same definition of the safety factor as a ratio of the shear strength of the soil to the shear stress required for equilibrium, employing certain assumptions with regard to equilibrium. In addition, in the conventional finite element method of analysis, the minimum safety factor is obtained assuming certain slip surfaces after the state of stress are found. Although the stress states are obtained from the finite element method(FEM), the slope stability analysis follows the conventional method that assumes a potential slip surface. In this study, a slope stability analysis based on FEM is developed to locate the slip surface by tracking the weakest points in the slope based on the local safety factor considering the magnitude and direction of the shear stresses. It has also been applied to be compared with the slip surfaces predicted by LEM. A computer program has been developed to draw contour lines of the local safety factors automatically. This method is illustrated through a simple hypothetical slope, a natural soil slope, and a dam slope. The developed method matches very well with the conventional LEM methods, with slightly lower global safety factors.

A control surface has one sole function to perform in meeting its purpose, and that is to develop a control force in consequence of its orientation and movement relative to the water. The forces and moments generated as a result of this rotation and angle of attack then determine the manoeuvring characteristics of the ship. In this paper, two-dimensional flow characteristics of a flapped rudder and a water-blowing control rudder were accomplished respectively by PIV method in a circulating water channel. Model test has been carried out with different angles of attack of main foil (NACA 0012) and flap's deflection angles to predict the performance of the flapped rudder and the water-blowing control rudder. The 2-frame particle tracking method has been used to obtain the velocity distribution in the flow field. $Re{\fallingdotseq}3.0{\times}10^4$ has been used during the whole experiments and measured results have been compared with each other.

  • The surface parameters associated with the land are usually dependent on the climate, and many physical processes that are displayed in the image sensed from the land then exhibit temporal variation with seasonal periodicity. An adaptive feedback system proposed in this study reconstructs a sequence of images remotely sensed from the land surface having the physical processes with seasonal periodicity. The harmonic model is used to track seasonal variation through time, and a Gibbs random field (GRF) is used to represent the spatial dependency of digital image processes. In this study, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was computed for one week composites of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imagery over the Korean peninsula for 1996 and 2000 using a dynamic technique, and the adaptive reconstruction of harmonic model was then applied to the NDVI time series for tracking changes on the ground surface. The results show that the adaptive approach is potentially very effective for continuously monitoring changes on near-real time.

  • In this paper, a redesigned guidance and control system for a lunar lander is presented. In past studies, the authors developed a trajectory and attitude control system which achieves the vertical soft landing on the lunar surface. It is confirmed that the system has a good tracking ability to a predefined profile and good robustness against a thruster failure mode where a partial failure of clustered engines was assumed. However, under the previous control laws, the landing point tends to be shifted, in response to the system parameter values, from a target point. Also, an unbalanced moment due to a thruster failure mode was not considered in the simulation. Therefore, in this study, the downrange control is added to the system to enable the vehicle to land at a pre-assigned target point accurately. Furthermore, inhibiting the effect of the unbalanced moment is attempted thorough redesigning the attitude control system. A numerical simulation was performed to confirm the ability of the proposed system with regard to the above problems. Moreover, in the past simulations, a low initial altitude was assumed as an initial condition: in this study, however, the performance of the proposed system is examined over the whole trajectory from an initial altitude of 10 [km] to the lunar surface.
