Recently, Low Impact Development (LID) is being used in Korea to control urban runoff and nonpoint source pollution. In this study, we evaluated the reduction of surface runoff from a study area, as the effect of connecting three bioretention as LID-BMP. Surface runoff and storage volume of bioretention is estimated by the Curve Number (CN) method. In this study, the storage volume of bioretention is divided by the volume of surface runoff and precipitation which directly enters the bioretention. The ratio of captured surface runoff volume to storage volume is highly influenced by the ratio of drainage area to surface area of bioretention. The high bioretention surface area-to-drainage area ratio captures more surface runoff. The ratio of 1.2 captures 51~54% of the total surface runoff, ranging from 5-30cm of bioretention depth; a ratio of 6.2 captures 81~85%. Three connected bioretentions could therefore captures much more runoff volume, ranging from $35.8{\sim}167.3m^3$, as compared to three disconnected bioretentions at their maximum amount of precipitation with non-effluent from the connecting three bioretentions. Hence, connecting LID-BMPs could improve the removal efficiencies of surface runoff volume and nonpoint source pollution.
Combustion phenomenon in scale-downed combustor is investigated. As the combustor volume decreases surface to volume ratio increases. for increased surface to volume ratio means increased heat loss and this increased heat loss affects reaction in combustion chamber. Plastic mini combustor is made. Stoichiometricaly premixed Hydrogen I air gas is used as fuel. Initial chamber pressure and chamber size are varied and the effects are evaluated. Peak pressure decreases with the decrease in chamber height. As initial chamber pressure decreases peak pressure decreases. And this change is more important than scale down effect till the chamber height of 1mm. With this result and further information following the experiments design parameter for micro engine can be established.

This study was performed to evaluate effects of physical characteristics of both watershed and reservoir on nutrient-chlorophyll relationship in Korean reservoirs. Simple linear models were developed with published data in Korea including 415 reservoirs and 11 multi-purpose dams, and physico-chemical parameters of reservoirs and characteristics relationship of models were analyzed. Theoretical residence time in Korean reservoirs was strongly correlated with the ratio of TA/ST (drainage area + surface area / storage volume) in the logarithmic function. As a result of monthly nutrients-chlorophyll-a regression analysis, significant Chl-a-TP relationship appeared during May~July. The high Chl-a yields per total phosphorus appeared during this time (R$\^$2/=0.51, p<0.001, N= 1088). Chlorophyll-a demonstrated much stronger relationship with TP. than TN. Seasonal algal-nutrient coupling were closely related with N:P ratio in the reservoir water, and it was, in turn, dependent on the monsoon climatic condition (precipitation). Based on the results of regression analysis and high N:P ratio, a major limiting factor of algal growth appeared to be phosphorus during this time. Unlikely TA/ST ratio, DA/SA ratio (drainage area f surface area) was likely to influence directly on the nutrient-Chl-a relationship, indicating that if storage volume and inflowing water volume were the same, algal biomass could be developed more in reservoirs with large surface area. Thus, DA/SA ratio seemed to be an important factor to affect the development of algal biomass in Korean reservoirs. With low determination coefficient of TP-Chl-a relationship, our findings indicated not only nutrient (phosphorus) but also other physical factors, such as DA/SA ratio, may affect algal biomass development in Korean reservoirs, where actual residence time appears to be more closely related to reservoir surface area rather than storage volume.
This study investigates experimentally into the design factors and quality variations having an effect on the properties of the combined high flowing concrete to be poured in the slurry wall of Inchon LNG in-ground receiving terminal. Especially, high belite cement and lime stone powder as cementitious materials and viscosity agent in order to improve self-compaction and hydration heat are used in this study. Water-cement ratio(W/C), fine aggregate volume ratio(Sr) and coarse aggregate volume ratio(Gv) as design factors of the combined high flowing concrete are applied to determine the optimum mix design proportion. Also quality variations for sensitivity test are selected items as followings. (1)Surface moisture(5cases) and (2)Fineness modulus of fine aggregate(5cases), (3)Concrete temperature(3cases), (4)Specific surface(3cases) and particle size of lime stone powder. As experimental results, water-cement ratio, fine and coarse aggregate volume ratio are shown as the optimum range 51%, 43% and 53% separately considering site condition of slurry wall. Also quality factors by sensitivity test should be controlled in the following ranges. (1) Surface moisture :to.67% and (2)Fineness modulus 2.6$\pm$0.2 of fine aggregate, (3)Concrete temperature l0-20t, (4) Specific surface 6,000$\textrm{cm}^2$/g and particle size 9.7$\pm$1.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of lime stone powder. Based on the results of this study, the optimum mix design proportion of the combined high flowing concrete are selected and poured successfully in the slurry wall of LNG in-ground tank.
Background: In a previous study undertaken to quantify capsular volume in rotator cuff interval or axillary pouch, significant differences were found between controls and patients with instability. However, the results obtained were derived from two-dimensional cross sectional areas. In our study, we sought correlation between three-dimensional (3D) capsular volumes, as measured by magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA), and multidirectional instability (MDI) of the shoulder. Methods: The MRAs of 21 patients with MDI of the shoulder and 16 control cases with no instability were retrospectively reviewed. Capsular areas determined by MRA were translated into 3D volumes using 3D software Mimics ver. 16 (Materilise, Leuven, Belgium), and glenoid surface area was measured in axial and coronal MRA views. Then, the ratio between capsular volume and glenoid surface area was calculated, and evaluated with control group. Results: The ratio between 3D capsular volume and glenoid surface area was significantly increased in the MDI group ($3.59{\pm}0.83cm^3/cm^2$) compared to the control group ($2.53{\pm}0.62cm^3/cm^2$) (p<0.01). Conclusions: From these results, we could support that capsular volume enlargement play an important role in MDI of the shoulder using volume measurement.
This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of drying shrinkage for concrete slabs as a project for Korean pavement design procedure. According to the volume-surface ratios and aggregate types, the experiments have been executed for 252 days. In order to simulate the volume-surface ratio of a real concrete pavement slab, three-layer epoxy coating and wrapping were used to prevent the evaporation at the part of specimen surfaces. As a result of preliminary test, coating and wrapping method was identified as reliable for three months. According to the volume-surface ratio, the drying shrinkage of the concrete specimen using sandstone was measured 1.32 to 1.8 times higher than that of the limestone specimen. Comparing to the measured drying shrinkage strains and established ACI and CEB-FIP model equations, it turned out that those model equations were underestimated. Finally, considering the age and volume-surface ratios, the prediction equations of the drying shrinkage of concrete specimen were proposed through a multiple nonlinear regression analysis.
$^{18}F$-fludeoxyglucose PET (FDG-PET) can help finding an abnormal metabolic activity in brain. In this study, we evaluated an efficiency of volume- and cortical surface-based analysis which were used to determine whether standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) of FDG-PET was different among Alzheimer's disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and healthy control (HC). Each PET image was rigidly co-registered to the corresponding magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using mutual information. All voxels of the co-registered PET images were divided by the mean FDG uptake of the cerebellum cortex which was thresholded by partial volume effect (>0.9). Also, the SUVR value of each vertex was linearly interpolated from volumetric SUVR image which was thresholded by gray matter partial volume effect (>0.1). Lobar mean values were calculated from both volume- and cortical surface-based SUVRs. Statistical analysis was conducted to compare two measures for AD, MCI and HC groups. Even though the results of volume (SUVR_vol) and cortical surface-based SUVR (SUVR_surf) analysis were not significantly different from each other, the latter would be better for detecting group differences in SUVR of PET.

Performance of a NACA 634-021 hydrofoil in motion under and in close proximity of a free surface for a large range of angles of attack is studied. Lift and drag coefficients of the hydrofoil at different submergence depths are investigated both numerically and experimentally, for 0° ≤ AoA ≤ 30° at a Reynolds number of 105. The results of the numerical study are in good agreement with the experimental results. The agreement confirms the new finding that for a submerged hydrofoil operating at high angles of attack close to a free surface, the interaction between the hydrofoil-motion induced waves on the free surface and the hydrofoil results in mitigation of the flow separation characteristics on the suction side of the foil and delay in stall, and improvement in hydrofoil performance. In comparing with a baseline case, results suggest a 55% increase in maximum lift coefficient and 90% average improvement in performance for, based on the lift-to-drag ratio, but it is also observed significant decrease of lift-to-drag ratio at lower angles of attack. Flow details obtained from combined finite volume and volume of fluid numerical methods provide insight into the underlying enhancement mechanism, involving interaction between the hydrofoil and the free surface.
In nanosized structures as the surface area to the bulk volume ratio increases the classical continuum mechanics approaches fails to investigate the mechanical behavior of such structures. In perforated nanobeam structures, more decrease in the bulk volume is obtained due to perforation process thus nonclassical continuum approaches should be employed for reliable investigation of the mechanical behavior these structures. This article introduces an analytical methodology to investigate the size dependent, surface energy, and perforation impacts on the nonclassical bending behavior of regularly squared cutout nanobeam structures for the first time. To do this, geometrical model for both bulk and surface characteristics is developed for regularly squared perforated nanobeams. Based on the proposed geometrical model, the nonclassical Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity model is adopted and modified to incorporate the surface energy effects in perforated nanobeams. To investigate the effect of shear deformation associated with cutout process, both Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams theories are developed. Mathematical model for perforated nanobeam structure including surface energy effects are derived in comprehensive procedure and nonclassical boundary conditions are presented. Closed forms for the nonclassical bending and rotational displacements are derived for both theories considering all classical and nonclassical kinematics and kinetics boundary conditions. Additionally, both uniformly distributed and concentrated loads are considered. The developed methodology is verified and compared with the available results and an excellent agreement is noticed. Both classical and nonclassical bending profiles for both thin and thick perforated nanobeams are investigated. Numerical results are obtained to illustrate effects of beam filling ratio, the number of hole rows through the cross section, surface material characteristics, beam slenderness ratio as well as the boundary and loading conditions on the non-classical bending behavior of perforated nanobeams in the presence of surface effects. It is found that, the surface residual stress has more significant effect on the bending deflection compared with the corresponding effect of the surface elasticity, Es. The obtained results are supportive for the design, analysis and manufacturing of perforated nanobeams.
A manipulator is operated for the motion of mechanical hands or arms by mechanical mechanism. When a cup including liquid inside is shifted by a manipulator, it is important to know how a free surface of the liquid moves. In this study, non-dimensional parameters have been found that affect the rise of the free surface in a cup moving with constant acceleration. The non-dimensional parameters are the dimensionless time, the ratio of inertia effect to vicous effect (Reynolds number), aspect ratio of the liquid inside the cup and acceleration ratio (Froude number). Through this study, the height of the free surface rise in a cup has been predicted. Generally the maximum rise of the free surface is dependent on the Reynolds number and Froude number strongly, but on the aspect ratio weakly. But the influence of the aspect ratio on the maximum rise of the free surface in not negligible in the range 10 < Re < 100.
