Curtain coating has been considered as the best coating technology because it is a coating technology that forms contour coating layer with better coverage. To increase the curtain stability surfactants are being used. In this study, the effect of a surfactant on the stability of curtain coating colors was examined by evaluating dynamic surface tension with a bubble surface tensiometer. Di-2-ethylhexyl sodium sulfosuccinate was used as a surfactant since it showed low dynamic surface tension at low surface age. And we evaluated the influence of surfactant on coating color properties including surface tension, viscosity and curtain stability. The surface tension of coating color was decreased when surfactant addition was increased up to 0.5 pph, but it was leveled off at 0.3 pph of surfactant addition. With the increase of surfactant addition rate, viscosity of coating color were increased. Micelles formed by surfactant contributed to the increase of the viscosity. Curtain stability was improved with the addition of surfactant until it reached up to 0.5 pph. Excessive addition of surfactant (> 0.5 pph) didn't improve curtain stability. This was attributed to Marangoni effect(self-healing) and decreasing of curtain thickness.
In an attempt to further clarify the effect of X·irradiation on the activity of surfactant in rabbits, X-ray in dose of 900r was irradiated to the lung tissues of rabbits in vitro. Tension-area diagram of the lung extract was recorded automatically by a modified Langmuir-Wilhelmy balance with a synchronized recording system designed in this department. The surface tension of the lung extract was measured at 1,3,5,24 and 48 hours post-irradiation, and the results were compared with the non·irradiated normal group. The result$ thus obtained are summarized as follows: I The maximal surface tension, minimal surface tension, width of the tension·area diagram at the surface area of 40% in the lung extract and stability index of the normal rabbit long extract were 40.73 dynes/cm, 8.96 dynes/cm, 20.71 dynes/cm and 1.28, respectively. II. When 900r of X-ray was irradiated to the lung in vitro, 1) The maximal and minimal surface tensions did not differ noticeably from the normal at 1,3, and 5 post-irradiation hours, but the minimal surface tension increased significantly at 24 and 48 hours Post-irradiation. 2) The width of the tension area at the surface area of 40% showed a tendency of decrease throughout the experiment. 3) The stability index showed no significant change at 1,3 and 5 post-irradiation hours, but at 24 and 48 hours post-irradiation a significant decrease was observed comparing with the control. III. Activity of surfactant was significantly depressed by X·irradiation in vitro especially at 24 and 48 hours post-irradiation.
In an attempt to understand the possible effects of temperature and X-irradiation on the activities of surfactant in rabbits, the pulmonary surfactant from the rabbit was subjected to the incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ and X-irradiation with 900r in vitro, and activities of surfactant were measured at 10, 30, 60, and 90 minutes. Tension-area diagram of the lung extract was recorded automatically by the modified Langmuir-wilhelmy balance with a synchronized recording system designed in this Department. A comparison was made with the normal and the following results were obtained. 1) The maximal surface tension, minimal surface tension, width of the tension area diagram at the surface area of 40% and stability index of the normal rabbit lung extract were $31.6{\pm}3.11\;dynes/cm,\;8.2{\pm}0.56\;dynes/cm,\;21.4{\pm}4.40\;dynes/cm\;and\;1.12{\pm}0.22$,respectively. 2) In the $37^{\circ}C$ incubation group, maximal surface tension was similar to the normal value, while minimal surface tension was significantly lower and stability infer was markedly higher than the normal. 3) In the group where X-irradiation of 900r in vitro was applied, maximal surface tension did not differ greatly with the normal or the $37^{\circ}C$ incubation group. The minimal surface tension was significantly lower than the normal but comparing with the $37^{\circ}C$ incubation group, some decrease in minimal surface tension was noted. The width of the tension·area diagram at 40% and stability index in the irradiated group were significantly higher than the normal but a tendency of increase was noted comparing with the $37^{\circ}C$ incubation group.
Changes of the surface and interface tension with temperature for washing liquids and alkanes were measured by FACE surface tensiometer. Using the extended Fowkes' equation, the dispersion and polar force components of the surface tension were estimated. The results were as follows : 1. The surface tensions of washing liquids and alkanes decreased almost linearly with the increase of temperature. 2. The interface tensions of 0.25% DBS/alkane increased slowly with the increase of temperature. In the case of nonionic surfactant solutions, however, the interface tensions with alkanes varied with the number of hydrophilic ethylene oxide(EO) groups. 3. Of the surface tension of water at $20^{\circ}C$, the dispersion force component was 25.3 dyn/cm and the polar force component was 47.8 dyn/cm. As the temperature increased, both the polar and dispersion force components decreased in a similar fashion. 4. The dispersion force component of surface tension of 0.25% DBS solution was 30.0 dyn/cm, and the polar force component was 2.2 dyn/cm at $20^{\circ}C$. The two components decreased with the increase of temperature. 5. As the temperature increased, the dispersion force component of surface tension decreased and the polar force component increased significantly for 0.25% NPPG-7.5EO solution. In the case of 025% NPPG-10EO, both the dispersion and polar force components decreased slowly, but the polar force component is expected to increase from $60^{\circ}C$. However, the polar force component of surface tension decreased with the increase of temperature for 025% NPPG-15EO solution, and at the temperature higher than $60^{\circ}C$ the surface tension is expected to be composed of only dispersion force component.
For the fabrication of core-shell structure bimetallic lead-free solder balls, both the critical temperature ($T_{cr}$) for the phase separation of two immiscible liquid phases and the temperature coefficient of the interfacial tension between the two separated liquid phases are required. In order to obtain this information, the temperature dependence of the surface tension of 60%Bi-24%Cu-16%Sn(-REM) alloys was measured using the constrained drop method. The slope of the temperature dependence of the surface tension changed clearly at a critical temperature for the separation of two immiscible liquid phases. The critical temperature of the 60%Bi-24%Cu-16%Sn alloy was estimated to be 1097K. An addition of 0.05% Ce decreased the critical temperature to 1085K, whereas that of 0.05% La increased it to 1117K. It was found that the surface tension and its temperature coefficient of the 60%Bi-24%Cu-16%Sn alloy were slightly increased by the addition of 0.05% Ce and 0.05% La. In addition, additions of Ce and La increased the temperature coefficient of the interfacial tension.
Some polymer materials including epoxy resin are being instead of porcelain for outdoor insulating materials such as insulators bushings cable terminators and surge arrester housing. And the largest problem to be overcomed is the tracking and erosion of the outdoor polymer material brought about by dry band arcing during prolonged exposure to contaminations. In this paper the effect of surface tension wettability flow rate of contaminants with varying surfactant content and frequency of applied voltage on the tracking breakdown of epoxy insulating materials were investigated. As the flow rate of contaminant is increased the surface resistivity is decreased and the leakage current is increased the time to tracking breakdown is decreased. It is found that time to tracking breakdown depends on the surface tension of contaminant that is difference of wettability. And as the frequency of applied voltage is increased time to tracking breakdown decreased.
This paper describes an experimental study on the droplet formation and the subsequent motion in a microchannel having a cross junction. While one kind of liquid (pure water or water-surfactant mixture) is drawn into a horizontal inlet channel, the other kind (oil) is introduced through two vertical inlet channels. Due to the effect of surface tension on the interface between the two fluids, the droplets of the first fluid are formed near the cross junction. In this study, we have found that the droplet formation is affected even by slight difference in the surface tension. When the surface tension between two fluids is decreased, the droplet size is decreased in order to keep the equilibration between the pressure and the surface tension. In addition, the time interval between each of the droplet formations is decreased and the distance between droplets is also decreased when the surface tension is decreased.
The effect of Si content in welding wires on spattering characteristics and droplet transfer phenomena was studied. In MAG welding using 80% Ar-20% $CO_2$ shielding gas, spattering characteristics and droplet transfer phenomena were varied with Si content of wire. With increasing Si content, the spattering ratio and the ratio of large size spatter $(d\geq1.0mm)$ were increased. The increase of Si content in molten metal made surface tension increase due to reduction of oxygen content, which resulted from deoxidizing action of silicon. The increase of surface tension resulted in unstable transfer phenomena and arc instability in both short circuit and spray region. With changing Si content of wire, spattering characteristics and droplet transfer phenomena was directly influenced by the variation of surface tension, compared with the effect of arc stability.

Contaminants such as fatty acids, triglycerides, resin acids and foam collected from a high yield sulfite weak liquor storage tank lowered the water surface tension and reduced inter-fibre bonding but also tended to benefit sheet opacity. Some common wet end additives such as defoamers and dispersants gave similar results. Lignosulfonate and naphthalene sulfonate showed little if any negative effect on both surface tension and sheet strength properties. Among the natural wood extractives. fatty acids were identified to be most detrimental followed by triglycerides and then resin acids. In order to alleviate the detrimental impact of these contaminants, membrane separation, air floatation and ozone treatment were carried out on paper machine white water samples. The effect of these treatments on removal of fatty and resin acids was quantified by a GC-Mass analysis. Reverse osmosis with a 1000 molecular weight cut off membrane failed to totally reject fatty and resin acids, but markedly reduced losses of sheet properties due to contaminants. Ozone treatment resulted in a significant increase of the surface tension and air floatation was considered to be a practical and useful method for removing fatty and resin acids from the machine white water.
