  • Solubilization of sewage sludge creates favorable conditions for anaerobic microorganisms to produce biogas. In this paper, we quantify the effect of heating pretreatment on the degree of solubilization of sewage sludge. The pretreatment process was carried out using a lab-scale industrial microwave unit (2450 MHz frequency). Response surface analysis was applied to determine the combination of temperature-increase rate (ramp rate) (2.9 to 17.1 ${^{\circ}C}$/min) and terminal temperature (52 to 108${^{\circ}C}$). Both ramp rate and temperature significantly affected the solubilization degree of sludge. Within the design boundaries, the conditions predicted to maximize the solubilization degree of 15.8% were determined to be 2.9 ${^{\circ}C}$/min and 104${^{\circ}C}$.

  • We investigated the effects of ethanol on solubilization of L-menthol solution. L-menthol solution was prepared by addition of PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil and PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil as nonionic surfactant. Ethanol was added in the solution to investigate effects of ethanol concentration on solubilization. We measured physical properties such as particle size and surface tension. The particle size and the surface tension became smaller with the increase of ethanol concentration.

  • The solubilization sites of aniline and its derivatives in micelles were investigated with fluorescence probe technique. The fluorescence probes employed in this study are 12-(9-anthroyl) stearic acid (AS) and 2-p-toluidinylnaphthalene-6-sulfonate (TNS) which are incorporated in the interior of the micelle and attaced to its surface, respectively. As these two probes were effectively quenched by aniline and its surface, respectively. As these two probes were effectively quenched by aniline and its derivatives, the modified Stern-Volmer relationship in micellar system could be applicable to estimate the partition coefficient, $K_{p}$ of the solubilizate between aqueous and micellar phase. Because $K_{p}$ derived by this method reflects the relative proximity of the fluorophore to the quencher, the ratio of $K_{p}$ in the surface area to that in the interior of the micelle is interpreted in terms of the relative location of the solubilizate in micellar aggregate. The results show that the solubilizates are not located in a definite position but distributed in the multiple-sites of the micelle. The solubilization sites of the solubilizates in the icelle are dependent on their structures. As the solubilizate has more numbers of N-substituents of aniline and more numbers, of carbon in the substituent, it tends to incorporate in the interior of the micelle more effectively.

  • The O/W microemulsion systems were made from 2 or 4% (w/w) oil (soybean oil, olive oil or isopropyl myristate) and 10, 15 or 20% (w/w) Brij 96. They were compared with micellar solution of equivalent surfactant concentration m therms of physicochemical properties, and the solubilization of sudan IV. They were characterized by dynamic light scattering, stability, surface tension, viscosity and rheogram. The mean diameters of O/W microemulsion systems were 10-15nm, and those of Brij 96 micellar solutions were 18-19 nm. Both of them were monodisperse systems. The O/W microemulsion systems showed Newtonian flow and their apparent viscosities were lower than those of micellar solutions. The surface tensions of O/W microemulsion systems were increased or decreased depending on the types of oil used, when compared with those of micellar solutions. The O/W microemulsion systems were very stable, and did not show any flocculation or aggregation. Their mean diameters were not changed after three months. But oxidation was observed in microemulsions without nitrogen gas at high temperature. There was a significant improvement in the sudan IV solubffimtion in micromulsion compared with that m the micellar solution containing equivalent concentration of surfactant. The size distribution and mean diameters of O/W micromulsions were not changed when sudan IV was solubilized.

  • Solubilization of cholesterol, its fatty acid esters and gallstones were undertaken employing nonionic, anionic and cationic surfactants. Cholesterol was effectively solubilized by all of these surfactants. Cationic surfactants were most effective. However, cholesteryl myristate was not solubilized at all. In the dissolution test of gallstones in surfactant solutions, cationic surfactant solutions were exceptionally effective in dissolving gallstones. These results suggest the possible existence of interaction between alkylammonium radical and cholesterol on micellar surface.

  • In this study, we attempted to solubilize protein in slaughter blood (SB) using ultrasonic technology. The application of ultrasonic technology can make enzymatic degradation of SB more effective, which has no comparable alternative for treatment. The SB was homogenized by grinding it for 10 minutes at 10,000 rpm as a pretreatment for preventing its clotting, and then ultrasonic treatment was attempted to solubilize protein in SB. To maximize the efficiency of ultrasonic treatment for SB, the optimum condition of ultrasonic frequency (UF) was determined to be 20 kHz. To optimize the operation conditions of ultrasonification with 20 kHz of frequency, we used response surface methodology (RSM) based on ultrasonic density (UD) and ultrasonification time (UT). The solubilization rate (SR) of protein (%) was calculated to be $101.304-19.4205X_1+0.0398X_2+7.9411X_1{^2}+0.0001X_2{^2}+0.0455X_1X_2$. From the results of the RSM study, the optimum conditions of UD and UT were determined at 0.5 W/mL and 22 minutes, respectively, and SB treated under these conditions was estimated to have a 95% SR. Also, experimentally, a 95.53% SR was observed under same conditions, accurately reflecting the theoretical prediction of 95%.

  • Biosolubilization of an Australian lignite was investigated by using Streptomyces viridosporus and Poria cocos. In order to solubilize coals effectively they were pretreated by nitric acid both in surface and liquid cultures. The optimum growth pH was 7.5 for S. viridosporus and 4.5 for P. cocos. The effects of various carbon, nitrogen and metal sources on overall solubilization were also studied. Solubility increased with the addition of urea for S. viridosporus, and peptone and tryptone for P. cocos. However carbon and metal sources had little or negative effects on solubilization. Maximum amount of coal solubilized was 85%(w/w) in a batch fermentation culture. Extracellular materials produced by micro-organism were found to be responsible for the coal solubilization. Approximately 70 to 80% of coal solubilization was determined to be the result of non-enzymatic reactions, and the rest to be the result of enzymatic reactions. Characteristics of the solubilized coal were compared with those of original coal and pretreated coal by the approximate and ultimate composition analysis, and IR-spectrum analysis. The spectroscopic results showed that the mechanism of coal solubilization was caused by continuous oxidation.

  • The interaction of para-halogenated benzoic acid isomers with the micellar system of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide was studied by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants ($K_s$) of benzoic acid isomers into the micellar system of TTAB and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of TTAB have been measured with the change of temperature. Various thermodynamic parameters have been calculated and analyzed from those measurement. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^{\circ}{_s}$ for the solubilization of all isomers are negative and the values of ${\Delta}H^{\circ}{_s}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\circ}{_s}$ are all positive within the measured temperature range. The effects of additives (n-butanol and NaCl) on the solubilization of benzoic acid isomers have been also measured. There was a great decrease on the values of $K_s$ and CMC simultaneously with these additives. From these changes we can postulate that the solubilization sites of each isomers in the TTAB micellar system are the surface or the palisade region of the micelle.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of surfactant on the rate of NAPLs(non-aqueous phase liquids) solubilization. The experimental variables were surfactant type, NAPLs type and water type. The main experimental designs were consists of two phases. The solubilization rate is sensitive to surfactant type based on this test. Used aqueous surfactants were solubilized and removed 72.77 to 89.90% of toluene, PCE(tetrachloroethylene) from the contaminated water during the test, respectively. T60 has higher and stable recovery ratio than SDS in surfactant type but, the micelle of the T60 is more weaker than that of SDS based on this study's results. And the solubilization rate in used water type was almost same.(deionized water, surface water).
