  • In this study, effect of sputtering after plasma nitriding and before PVD coating on the microstucture, microhardness, surface roughness and the adhesion strength of CrN thin films were investigated. Experimental results showed that this sputtering process not only removed surface compound layer which formed during a plasma nitriding process but also induced an alteration of the surface of plasma nitrided substrate in terms of microhardness distribution and surface roughness, which in turn affected the adhesion strength of PVD coatings. After sputtering, microhardness distribution showed general decrease and the surface roughness became increased slightly. The critical shear stress measured from the scratch test on the CrN coatings showed an approximately twice increase in the binding strength through the sputtering prior to the coating and this could be attributed to a complete removal of compound layer from the plasma nitrided surface and to an increase in the surface roughness after sputtering.

  • To apply the CVD diamond film to coated tools, it is necessary to make adhesion strength between diamond film and substrate stronger. So adhesion strength of diamond coated WC-Co tools using Microwave Plasma CVD and cutting test of Al-18mass%Si alloy using diamond cutting tools were studied. Diamond coating was carried out using Microwave Plasma CVD apparatus. Reaction gas was used mixture of methane and hydrogen. Substrate temperature were varied from 673K to 1173K by control of microwave output power and reaction pressure. By observation of SEM, grain size became larger and larger as substrate temperature became higher and higher. Also all deposits were covered with clear diamond crystals. XRD results, the deposits were identified to cubic diamond. An analysis using Raman spectroscopy, the deposit synthesized at lower substrate temperature (673K) showed higher quality than deposit synthesized at higher substrate temperature (1173K). As a result of scratch adhesion strength test, from 873K to 1173K adhesion strength decreased by rising of substrate temperature. The deposit synthesized at 873K showed best adhesion strength. In the cutting test of Al-18mass%Si alloy using diamond coated tools and the surface machinability of Al-Si works turned with diamond coating tools which synthesized at 873K presented uniform roughness. Cutting performance of Al-18mass%Si alloys using diamond coated WC-Co tools related to the adhesion strength.

  • Mar behavior and visibility were investigated by applying a constant load to various gloss-coated urethane-acrylate surfaces. Using a area-contact scratch tip which can apply a relatively low stress level to the coated surfaces, the mar damages were generated on the surfaces. When evaluating the mar-induced damage by means of delta-gloss (${\Delta}G$) and delta-luminance (${\Delta}L$) with existing test methodologies, an increase in constant load on the same gloss-coated surface leads to an increase in ${\Delta}G$ and ${\Delta}L$. However, these are not suitable for evaluating and comparing the surface damages of different gloss-coated samples because of a disagreement between the measured values and the mar visibility. It is shown that new mar test assessment proposed in this work not only can be used to quantitatively evaluate the mar damage, but also accounts for the correlation that the increases of the normalized gloss and luminance on coated surfaces correspond with an increase in the mar visibility.

  • In this study, it has been tried to make the single Mo-Cu alloying targets with the Cu showing the best surface hardness that was determined by investigation on the coatings with the double target process. The single alloying targets were prepared by powder metallurgy methods such as mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. The nanocomposite coatings were prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering process with the single alloying targets in $Ar+N_2$ atmosphere. The microstructure changes of the Mo-Cu-N coatings with diverse Cu contents were investigated by using XRD, SEM and EDS. The mechanical properties of the coatings were evaluated by using nano-indentor, scratch test, and ball on disc methods. Especially, the coated samples were tested by using various lubricating oil to compare the property of anti wear-resistance. In this study, the nano-composite MoN-Cu coatings prepared using an alloying target was eventually compared with the coatings from the multiple targets.

  • MoS$_2$-Ti films were deposited on SKD-11 tool steel substrate by a D.C. magnetron sputtering system. The influence of deposition parameters on the adhesion of the films was investigated by the scratch test. Crosssection morphology was evaluated using FE-SEM. The plasma etching played an important role on the adhesion of the films. The appropriate etching conditions roughened the surface, resulting In the improved adhesion of the film. The adhesion of the film increased with the interlayer thickness up to 110 nm and then decreased slightly with further increasing of interlayer thickness. The adhesion was highest at a bias voltage of -50 V. Further increase of the bias voltage decreased the film adhesion.

  • The arc ion plating (AIP) technique has been used widely for thin coating in the area of surface engineering. The TiN coating is important in the field of dies, cutting tools and other mechanical parts. When forming the TiN films by AIP technique, the processing parameters such as arc power, bias voltage, working pressure, temperature of substrate and pre-treatment affected the adhesion respectively. The results of scratch test revealed that the adhesion strength was influenced by arc power most strongly. And a sequence of the importance of each parameters has been obtained. The crystal structure and cross-section of TiN films are also be investigated.

  • ($Ti_{1-x}$ $Cr_{x}$ )N coatings were deposited by an ion-plating method in a reactor with two separate metal sources, Ti and Cr. Ti was evaporated using an electron beam, while Cr evaporation was carried out by resistant heating. The Ti and Cr concentrations in the coatings were controlled by the Ti and Cr evaporation ratio. The coating hardness increased with increasing the Cr content(x) and showed a maximum value of 6,000 HK at around x=0.8. The critical load of the coatings, measured by the scratch test, was around 30 N. The wear resistance properties of the ($Ti_{1-x}$$Cr_{ x}$)N coatings were evaluated using a CSEM pin-on-disk type tribometer. A Cr-steel ball as well as a SiC ball, which had hardness values of 590 HK and 2,600 HK respectively, were used as the pin. After the wear test, the surface morphology, roughness and the concentration of the coatings were investigated, with the main focus being on the effect of wear debris and the transferred layer on the wear behavior.

  • For depth machining in die and mold, Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is used generally. To make deep hole and deep shape efficiently, cemented carbide endmill for depth machining is necessary. For this purpose, cemented carbide endmill was designed using design of experiment (DOE). To improve cutting performance, endmill was coated with multilayer surface treatment, TiAlCrSiN and TiAlCrN, for higher wear resistance. In order to evaluate the endmill, Transverse Rupture Strength (TRS) test was tried for investigating the relationship between surface treatment and strength in endmill body. Scratch test was also used for measuring adhesion force of each surface treatment. To evaluate hardness of surface treatment, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) analysis was carried out. Wear test was executed for characteristics of each surface treatment in high temperature. Consequently, TiAlCrSiN was superior to the TiAlCrN coating in case of high temperature environment such as cutting.
