We examined characterizations of Paraloid B72 films when it dissolved in four different solvents-acetone, MEK, toluene and xylene. The surface before and after coating were observed by optical microscope and AFM. Thickness and contact angle of films was measured and surface energy was calculated for grasping properties of films. We also tested adhesive strength of films by scratch tester and durability of films by performing yellowing test. The result was that xylene has better coating property than other solvents. Because 10% Paraloid B72 in xylene film is even, non-mottled, thin, stabilized in yellowish and has proper hydrophobic, we confirmed xylene is good solvent for bronze artifact conservation. However, other tests will need for finding appropriate concentration of Paraloid B72.

Surface structure and adhesion by the reaction between thin metal films and SiC were studied at temperatures between 550 and $1450^{\circ}C$ for various times. The reaction with the formation of various silicides was initially observed above $850^{\circ}C$ for SiC/Co system and $650^{\circ}C$ for SiC/Ni system. The cobalt reacted with SiC and consumed completely at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 0.5 h and the nickel at $950^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The observed CoSi phase in SiC/Co and Ni$_2$Si phase in SiC/Ni are thermodynamically stable in the reaction zone up to 125$0^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$ respectively. Carbon was crystallized as graphite above $1450^{\circ}C$ for SiC/Co reaction surface and $1250^{\circ}C$ for SiC/Ni. The critical loads of the thin metal films on SiC substrate were qualitatively compared in terms of the scratch test method. At temperatures between 850 and $1050^{\circ}C$, relatively higher values of 20~33 N were observed for SiC/Ni couples.

This study was performed as a part of the research on the development of a maskless and electroless process for fabricating metal micro/nanostructures by using a nanoindenter and an electroless deposition technique. $2-{\mu}m$-deep indentation tests on Ni and Cu samples were performed. The elastic recovery of the Ni and Cu was 9.30% and 9.53% of the maximum penetration depth, respectively. The hardness and the elastic modulus were 1.56 GPa and 120 GPa for Ni and 1.51 GPa and 104 GPa for Cu. The effect of single-point diamond machining conditions such as the Berkovich tip orientation (0, 45, and $90^{\circ}$ ) and the normal load (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 mN), on both the deformation behavior and the morphology of cutting traces (such as width and depth) was investigated by constant-load scratch tests. The tip orientation had a significant influence on the coefficient of friction, which varied from 0.52-0.66 for Ni and from 0.46- 0.61 for Cu. The crisscross-pattern sample showed that the tip orientation strongly affects the surface quality of the machined are a during scratching. A selective deposition of Cu at the pit-like defect on a p-type Si(111) surface was also investigated. Preferential deposition of the Cu occurred at the surface defect sites of silicon wafers, indicating that those defect sites act as active sites for the deposition reaction. The shape of the Cu-deposited area was almost the same as that of the residual stress field.

In order to improve the adhesion properties of copper, MPS(3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane) organic film were employed. The plasma pretreatment in pure He or $He/O_{2}$ mixed gas environment greatly increased adhesion force. Adhesion force was measured by scratch test with nano indenter. Microstructures and surface roughness were observed with scanning electron microscope(SEM). The characteristics of MPS layer for pretreatment were studied with flourier transform infrared spectroscope(FT-IR) and contact angle tester. The heighest adhesion was achieved in the specimen pretreated with mixed plasma and NPS coating, which was 56mN. Other specimen showed lower value by $20{\%}$ to $30{\%}$. The roughness of substrate was not affected by the bonding strength of copper plating.
It was reviewed that the kinds of lubricating oil, viscosity, temperature and strength of materials affected the wear of the surface heat treatment. When lubricants is used under severe running conditions, their tribological characteristics are very important. We have studied the lubricating oil viscosity, kinds of additives and their amounts, and lubricating oil temperatures were changed. In order to study the effect of oil temperature on the wear of the surface, the temperature of the oil was changed for the same sample. It was shown from the test results that wear is not greatly affected by the amount of ZnDTP (Zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate) antiwear agent, but EP (Extreme pressure) additives are less effective against wear than ZnDTP additives. The viscosity of lubricating oil and its temperature greatly affect the wear of the surface. Combining all the wear data with those of the surface strength, it was observed that the higher the load, the lower the scratch of wear, and also in the case of the same running load, the lower the wear, the longer the life of the surface strength.

The adhesion strength of sputtered copper films to Inconel substrates has been studied using the scratch test. The effects of substrate treatments before deposition such as chemical or ion bombardment etching were investigated by means of a mean critical load derived from a Weibull-like statistical analysis. It was found that the mean critical load was very weak unless the amorphous layer produced by mechanical polishing on the substrate surface was eliminated. Chemical etching in a nitric-hydrochloric acid bath was shown to have practically no effect on the enhancement of the adhesion. In contrast, the addition in this bath of nickel and copper sulphates allowed removal of the amorphous layer and an increase in the values of the mean critical load. However, it was observed that excessive chemical etching could cancel out the mean critical load enhancement. The results obtained in the case of ion bombardment etching pretreatments could be far higher than those obtained with chemical etching. Moreover, for a sufficiently long period of ion bombardment etching, the adhesion strength was so high that it was impossible to observe evidence of an adhesion failure.

New WC-CrN superlattice film was deposited on Si substrate (500$\mu\textrm{m}$) using cathodic arc ion plating system. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the film depend on the superlattice period (λ). In the X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), preferred orientation of microstructure was changed according to various superlattice periods(λ). During the Transmission Electron Microscope analysis (TEM), microstructure and superlattice period (λ) of the WC - CrN superlattice film was confirmed. Hardness and adhesion of the deposited film was evaluated by nanoindentation test and scratch test, respectively. As a result of nanoindentation test, the hardness of WC - CrN superlattice film was gained about 40GPa at superlattice period (λ) with 7nm. Also residual stress with various superlattice period (λ) was measured on Si wafer (100$\mu\textrm{m}$) by conventional beam-bending technique. The residual stress of the film was reduced to a value of 0.2 GPa by introducing Ti - WC buffer layers periodically with a thickness ratio ($t_{buffer}$/$t_{buffer+superlattice}$ ). To the end, for the evaluation of oxidation resistance at the elevated temperature, CrN single layer and WC - CrN superlattice films with various superlattice periods on SKD61 substrate was measured and compared with the oxidation resistance.
Friction and wear affect all processes involved in the extraction of materials and their conversion into finished products in the die applications such as drawing, extrusion etc. Originating phenomenon from the contact surface between the tool and workpiece, they are usually a hindrance to materials process operations which usually result in damaging the tools, increasing energy consumption, the contamination of processed material by wear particles and also some problems associated with technologies to control friction and wear. The most well established method to control friction and wear is by the application of lubricant such as fluorocarbon. Besides, a surface technique so-called surface modification can be applied to solve the tribology problems of the die applications for both the economical and ecological reasons. In this article, we applied DLC(diamond-like carbon) thin film on alumina ceramic for HT test using the PIID(plasma ion immersion deposition), 4 groups of test specimens were tested up to $200^{\circ}C$ which is a little higher than the normal working temperature of die application. Pin-on-disc tribo-tester was used to test the friction and surfaces were characterized by SEM and EDS and else, the morphology changes of DLC coatings were studied. The present work indicated that the DLC had a great potential to reduce the friction and wear in the alumina die application without lubricants.

This paper presents the effects of cryogenic temperature on the wear behavior of 22MnB5 blank under cold stamping. After immersing the blank in liquid nitrogen (LN2) for 10 min, a strip drawing test was performed within 10 s. The hardness was measured using the Rockwell hardness test, which increased from 165 HV at 20℃ to 192 HV at cryogenic temperature. The strip drawing test with 22MnB5 blank and SKD61 tool steel shows that for the different wear mechanisms on the tool surface with respect to temperature; adhesive wear is dominant at 20℃, but abrasive wear is the main mechanism at cryogenic temperature. As the friction test is repeated, sticking gradually increases on the tool surface at 20℃, whereas the scratch increases at cryogenic temperature. For the friction behavior, the friction coefficient rapidly increases when adhesive wear occurs, and it occurs more frequently at 20℃. The results for nanoindentation near the worn blank surface indicate a difference of 1.3 GPa at 20℃ and 0.8 GPa at cryogenic temperature compared to the existing hardness, indicating increased deformation by friction at 20℃. This occurs because thermally activated energy available to move the dislocation decreases with decreasing temperature.

When Lubricants is used under severe running condition, tribological characteristics is very important. I have studied the lubricating oil viscosity, kinds of additives and lubricating oil temperatures were changed. In order to study the effect of oil temperature on the wear of the surface, the temperature of the oil was changed for the same sample. Moreover, the temperatures of three kinds of oils which have very different viscosities at room temperature, were varied while the oil viscosity was unchanged. It was shown from the test results that wear is not greatly affected by the amount of ZnDTP antiwear agent, but E-P additives are less effective against wear than ZnDTP additives. The viscosity of lubricating oil and its tempea-ature greatly affect the wear of the surface. Combining all the wear data with those of the surface strength, it was observed that the higher the load, the lower the scratch of wear, and also in the case of the same running load, the lower the wear, the longer the life of the surface strength.
