In this study, the residual stress fields of multi-pass welded were analyzed by FEA under various geometrical conditions. In order to estimate the effects of pipe geometries on residual stress distribution, welding processes of each model were performed under the same heat cycles. And then, the influence of cutting off the weld bead on the residual stress redistribution was also estimated. From the results, in the range of t/D=0.05, axial residual stresses on the outer surface of the welded pipe were linearly decreased with pipe diameter increase. On the other hand, hoop residual stresses were not influenced by them. And both axial and hoop residual stresses on the outer surface of the welded pipe were increased with pipe diameter increase. But, when t/D was smaller than 0.05, they were converged in the nearly same value. The maximum residual stresses were generated at around HAZ. It in therefore necessary to consider them in welding design, strength evaluation, and analysis of fracture characteristics.

The residual stress in shot-peened Al 7075 alloy was evaluated using surface acoustic wave (SAW). Shot peening was conducted to produce a variation in the residual stress with the depth below the surface under a shot velocity of 30 m/s. The SAW velocity was measured from the V(z) curve using a scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM). The Vickers hardness profile from the surface showed a significant work hardening near the surface layer with a thickness of about 0.25 mm. As the residual stress became more compressive, the SAW velocity increased, whereas as the residual stress became more tensile, the SAW velocity decreased. The variation in the SAW velocity through the shot peened surface layer was in good agreement with the distribution of the residual stress measured by X-ray diffraction technique.

This study is to investigate the magnitude, direction and distribution of residual stresses in surface ground plate according to working conditions. The specimens were made of structural carbon steel and were machined in various grinding conditions. These were divided in two groups; heat-treated materials and non-heat-treated materials. In each working condition, let the ground specimen generate displacements using deflection-etching techniques. At the same time, these displacements were precisely measured with electronic micrometer. Through the relation formula between the plane stress and strain, which was derived using these measured data, the values of residual stress are calculated, and the results are analyzed. These results are as follows : 1. According to the working conditions in this experiment, it can be seen that the distribution of residual stress generally had same trend and the maximum residual stress remained in 20~30 ((${\mu}m$) beneath the surface. 2. It is observed that compressive residual stress changes into tensile stress in 5~20 (${\mu}m$) beneath the surface. It is suggested that such phenomenon is originated from the friction effect in grinding process. 3. As the hardness increases by the heat treatment, residual stress increases. 4. As the fatigue strength increases by the compressive residual stress, it is desirable that the dowm feed and table feed reduce. 5. It can be seen that the more great the down feed and table feed increase, the more close the changing point, where the stress changed from compressive to tensile, is colse to the surface. This is due to the resultant effects of the grinding temperature and resistence are larger than the effect of the friction.

The gradient of the residual stress distribution in the mechanical defect on the optical fiber surface was investigated. This gradient of the residual stress distribution appeared in both of the core and the clad of the mechanical defect region on the optical fiber. The residual stress measurement was suggested as a investigation method of the mechanical defect on the optical fiber.
The paper represents the effects of the drive-in process parameters on the residual stress profile of the p+ silicon film. For the quantitative determination of the residual stress profiles, the test samples are doped via the fixed boron diffusion process and four types of the thermal oxidation processes and consecutively etched by the improved process. The residual stress measurement structures with the different thickness are simultaneously fabricated on the same silicon wafer. Since the residual stress profile is not uniform along the direction normal to the surface, the residual stress is assumed to be a polynomial function of the depth. All of the coefficients of the polynomial are determined from the deflections of cantilevers and the displacement of a rotating beam structure. As the drive-in temperature or the drive-in time increases, the boron concentration decreases and the magnitude of the average residual tensile stress decreases. Also, near the surface of the p+ film the residual tensile stress is transformed into the residual compressive stress and its magnitude increases.

The fatigue life of mechanical components and structures has been influenced by mechanical, material and environmental conditions. It is important to search out the load type and size for accurate cause of fracture at the damaged surface of material. The fractographic method by x-ray diffraction can utilize residual stress $\sigma$_r and half-value breadth B and find out the types and the mechanical conditions of fracture. This study showed the relationship between fracture mechanical parameters $\Delta$K, $K_{max}$ and X-ray residual stress $\sigma$_r for normalized SS41 steel with homogeneous crystal structure and M.E.F. dual phase steel(martensite encapsulated islands of ferrite). The fatigue crack propagation tests were carried out under stress ratios 0.1 and 0.5. The x-ray diffraction technique according to crack propatation direction was applied to fatigue fractured surface. Residual stress $\sigma$_r was independent on stress ratios by arrangement of $\Delta$K. The equation of $\sigma$_r$\Delta$K was established by the experimental data. Therefore, fracture mechanical parameters can be estimated can be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.

In this study, residual stress and surface roughness were investigated experimentally to evaluate surface integrity on surface layer machined by CBN, ceramics and WC cutting tools. When machining difficult-to-cut material (hardened STD11 steel $H_{R}$C 60), residual stresses remaining in machined surface layer were mainly compressive. The increase of flank wear caused a shift of the compressive residual stress maximum to greater workpiece depths, but the changes did not penetrate the workpiece beneath a depth of 300 .mu. m. Surface roughness was influenced considerably by variations of the cutting speed and feed. In machining hard material, CBN and A1$_{2}$$O_{3}$ ceramics cutting tool materials proved significantly superior to mixed ceramics A1$_{2}$$O_{3}$-TiC and WC in evaluation of surface integrity.y.

The sudden-stop apparatus is made to measure the residual stress of the infinitesimal area at the turning work surface by using the X-ray stress apparatus. This study is trued to make the cutting work the instantaneous stopping state in the normal working state. The behaviour of work material near the tool is estimated. The estimation method is that the distribution of residual stress can be also measured. The object is to clarify and control the mechanism to leave the adequate stress of the finishing surface. It's beginning is due to observe the occurrence state of the residual stress at the cutting work. The result obtained by this study is as follows. The chips are not separated from the work materials at all the cutting experiments of built-up edges or the shearing areas etc. which can be precisely observed by using the sudden-stop apparatus. The strain of movable system which can be seen at the part of working layer means the size of strain. This experiment proves that the working strain should be lessened to make the size of strain control the residual stress happened at the cutting surface.
