  • In this paper, various operating parameters of stream reforming process from methane in stream reformer and preconverter for MCFC is studied by numerical method. Commercial code is used to simulated the porous catalyst with user subroutine to model three dominant chemical reactions which are Stream Reforming(SR), Water-Gas Shift(WGS), and Direct Stram Reforming(DSR). The hydrogen production is tested with different wall temperature and different reactor shapes. The calculated results of the concentration of hydrogen in stream reformer are very well consistent with experimental results. This numerical study gives the design reactor wall temperature condition and size of reactor to satisfy the required fuel conversion.

  • Highly active and stable nano-sized Ni catalysts supported on MgO-$Al_2O_3$ calcined from hydrotalcite-like materials have been successfully developed with a strong metal to support interaction (SMSI) to enhance the coke resistance in combined $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ reforming of $CH_4$ (CSCRM) for syngas ($H_2$/CO=2) production. The change of the surface area and NiO crystallite size with varying the pre-calcination temperature of support and Mgo content was investigated in relation to the coke resistance. As increasing the pre-calcination temperature, the surface area decreases and the metal to support interaction becomes weak. As a consequence, the coke deposition was more severe on catalysts pre-calcined at high temperature. It was concluded that highly dispersed Ni metal in the surface of Ni/MgO-$Al_2O_3$ catalyst (MgO=30 wt%) pre-calcined at $800^{\circ}C$ had a strong metal to support interaction (SMSI) resulting in an increase of coke resistance and high activity.

  • Performance tests on $Ni/Ce-ZrO_2/Al_2O_3$ catalysts with additives (MgO, $La_2O_3$) were investigated in the combined reforming processes (SCR, ATR, TRM) in order to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide (it is called "syngas".). The catalyst characterization was conducted using the BET surface analyzer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, TPR and TGA. The combined reforming process was developed to adjust the syngas ratio depending on the synthetic fuel (methanol, DME and GTL) manufacturing processes. Ni-based catalysts supported on alumina has been generally recommended as a combined reforming reaction catalyst. It was found that both free NiO and complexed NiO species were responsible for the catalytic activity in the combined reforming of methane conversion, and the $Ce-ZrO_2$ binary support employed had improved the oxygen storage capacity and thermal stability. The additives, MgO and $La_2O_3$, also seemed to play an important role to prevent the formation of the carbon deposition over the catalysts. The experimental results were compared with the equilibrium data using a commercial simulation tool (PRO/II).

  • In this study, we characterized steam reforming reactions and surface of $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalysts. Ni-Mo based catalysts were prepared by loading Mo as the co-catalyst and reaction activities of the Ni-Mo based catalysts were compared with those of Ni-based catalysts. Through the $H_2$-TPR and XPS analysis it was confirmed that this characteristic efficiency. $O_2$-TPO analysis was performed to examine the deposition characteristics, bonding structures and evaporation characteristics of carbon deposited on the surface of catalysts after long run experiments were performed for steam reforming reactions. As the results, it was found that durability was improved in Ni-Mo based catalysts inhibiting formation of graphitic carbon species which reduced reaction activities of the catalysts by strongly interacting with Ni in the steam reforming reaction.

  • In this work, thin film type Cu/ZnO nanostructure catalysts were fabricated by several synthetic routes in order to maximize the performance of the micro reforming system. For this work, various Cu/ZnO nanostructure catalysts could be synthesized by means of four approaches which are chemical vapor method, wet solution method and their hybrid method. The reforming performance of these as-synthetic catalysts was evaluated as compared to the conventional catalysts. Among the as-synthetic nanostructures, sphere type catalysts with specific surface of $18.6m^2/g$ showed the best performance of hydrogen production rate of 30ml/min at the feed rate of 0.2ml/min. This work will give the first insight on thin film type Cu/ZnO nanostructure catalyst for micro reforming system for hydrogen production of portable electronic systems.

  • CH4/CO2 dry reforming was carried out to make syn gas on the Ni/Al2O3 catalysts calcined at different temperatures. The Ni/Al2O3 (850 $^{\circ}C)$ catalyst gave good activity and stability w hereas the Ni/Al2O3 $(450^{\circ}C)$ catalyst showed lower activity and stability. The NiO/Al2O3 catalyst calcined at $850^{\circ}C$ for 16 h (Ni/Al2O3 $(850^{\circ}C))$ formed the spinel structure of nickel aluminate, which was confirmed by TPR. The carbon formation rate on the Ni/Al2O3 $(850^{\circ}C)$ catalyst was very low till 20 h, and then steeply increased with reaction time without decreasing the activity for CH4 reforming. The Ni/Al2O3 $(450^{\circ}C)$ catalyst showed high carbon formation rate at the initial reaction time and then, the rate nearly stopped with continuous decreasing the activity for CH4 reforming. Even though the amount of carbon deposition on the Ni/Al2O3 $(850^{\circ}C)$ catalyst was higher than that on the Ni/Al2O3 $(450^{\circ}C)$ catalyst, the activity for CH4ing was also high, which could be attributed to the different type of the carbon formed on the catalyst surface.

  • In this study, the catalytic reaction characteristics for producing hydrogen using methanol steam reforming were investigated. Nickel and copper are frequently used in steam reforming reaction and methanol synthesis, were used as main active metals. As a support, hydrotalcite has a high specific surface area, excellent porosity and thermal stability, and has weak Lewis acid sites and basic properties. Hydrotalcite was used to identify catalysts of methanol steam reforming with catalytic activity and their properties. In this research, high reactivity was shown in the catalyst of copper metal with high reducibility. And increasing of active metal loading showed the higher the methanol conversion and hydrogen selectivity.

  • CO2 reforming of methane (CRM) based on Ni catalysts was studied using temperature programmed reaction (TPR). The onset temperature of the CRM reaction was increased in a repeated TPR experiments. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy showed formation of graphite structures on Ni during CRM reaction, which deactivate Ni-surfaces. Attempts were made for inhibiting deactivation of Ni surfaces and reducing onset-temperature of the CRM reaction by various surface modification techniques, which will be presented in this poster.

  • Catalytic reforming of $CO_2$ by $CH_4$ over Ni-YSZ based catalysts was investigated to produce syngas as raw material of high valued chemicals and develop high performance catalyst electrode for an internal reforming of $CO_2$ in SOFC system. Ni-YSZ based catalysts were prepared using physical mixing and maleic acid methods to improve catalytic activity and inhibition of carbon deposition. The catalysts before and after the reaction were characterized by $N_2$ physisorption, TPR(temperature programed reduction), XRD and impedance analyzer. The conversions for $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ over Ni-MgO catalyst showed 90% but much amount of carbon deposition was detected on catalyst surface. On the other hand, the conversions for $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ over NiO-YSZ-$CeO_2$ catalyst showed 100% and 85% respectively, and carbon deposition on catalyst surface was inhibited under the tested condition. It was concluded that NiO-YSZ-$CeO_2$ catalyst is a promising candidate for the catalytic reforming of $CO_2$ and the internal reforming in SOFC system.
