Growth form and surface morphology of NYAB single crystal grown by TSSG technique using a K2O/3MoOS/0.5B203 flux was investigated. In the crystal grown from <100> or <120> seed, prismatic and (101) faces were well developed with different size each other. (001) face was also developed in the crystal grown from <001> seed. While growth hillocks were observed on the prismatic face of the crystal grown from <100> seed, surface striations parallel to neighbor (101) faces were formed on that face of the crystal grown from <001> seed. The (101) faces were grown by two dimensional nucleation growth. (001) face which was developed at slow growth velocity of [001] direction was grown by screw dislocation Anisotropy of growth velocity as to seed orientation affected on crystal morphology and surface morphology.

A study on frost prevention of fin-tube heat exchanger is experimently performed by spreading antifreezing solution on heat exchanger surface. It is desirable that the antifreezing solution spreads completely on the surface forming thin liquid film to prevent frost nucleation and crystal growth and to reduce the thermal resistance across the liquid film. A small amount of antifreezing solution falls in drops on heat exchanger surface using two types of supplying devices, and a porous layer coating technique is adopted to enhance the wettedness of antifreezing solution on the surface. It is observed that the antifreezing solution liquid film prevents fin-tube heat exchanger from frosting, and heat transfer performance does not degrade through the frosting tests. The concentration of supplied antifreezing solution can be determined by heat transfer analysis of the first row of heat exchanger to avoid antifreezing solution freezing due to dilution by moisture absorption.
Microstructure modifications are investigated for annealed Co-based amorphous ribbon in vacuum and open air. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra for annealed sample in vacuum indicate atomic arrangements with initial nucleation of hcp-Co crystallite at 38$0^{\circ}C$ annealing temperature. However, the XRD spectra in samples with long annealing times of $t_a\geq300$ min demonstrate sharp and good developed surface crystalline hcp-, fcc- Co and $Co_2$Si phases. The giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) profile at 0.1 MHz displaying one-peak behavior in vacuum annealed samples at T = 38$0^{\circ}C$ irrespective of annealing time $t_a$ from 20 to 480 mim. For the annealed samples in an open air, the GMI profile shows two-peaks for $t_a$ = 20 min annealed sample. However, one of peaks disappears and an asymmetric GMI profile exhibits a drastic step-like change near zero field for $t_a\geq300$min. Such asymmetric GMI characteristics is related to the surface microstructures of fcc-Co, hop-Co and $Co_2$Si crystalline phases.

In this study, we prepared magnesium ion containing oxide films formed on the Ti-6Al-4V using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment. Ti-6Al-4V surface was treated using PEO in Mg containing electrolytes at 270V for 5 min. The phase, composition and morphology of the Mg ion containing oxide films were evaluated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and filed-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The biocompatibility of Mg ion containing oxide films was evaluated by immersing in simulated body fluid (SBF). According to surface properties of PEO films, the optimum condition was formed when the applied was 270 V. The PEO films formed in the condition contained the properties of porosity, anatase phase, and near 1.7 Ca(Mg)/P ratio in the oxide film. Our experimental results demonstrate that Mg ion containing oxide promotes bone like apatite nucleation and growth from SBF. The phase and morphologies of bone like apatite were influenced by the Mg ion concentration.
Sticking behavior under the hot rolling conditions for ferritic stainless steels have been studied. Sticking, which is a phenomenon that the naked metal exposed to the surface by scale breakaway during hot rolling sticks to the roll surface, was affected by both high temperature tensile strength and oxidation resistance of the steels. A steel having higher tensile strength and lower oxidation resistance exhibits better resistance to the sticking. It is due to that higher tensile strength increases localized deformation resistance and lower oxidation resistance creates lower friction between steel and roll by forming thicker scale as a lubricant during hot rolling. So, the sticking tends to occur more severely in the order of 430J1L, 436L, 430 and 409L. The most sensitive temperature to the sticking was found to be 90$0^{\circ}C$ for all grade of steels. It was also found that the high speed steel(HSS) roll compared to the Hi-Cr roll was more beneficial to prevent sticking. Because higher surface hardness of HSS roll compared to that of Hi-Cr roll provides less nucleation sites for sticking such as scratch on the roll surface.

The maximum current density of copper electrorefining is 350 A/$m^2$ and the higher current density is required to promote the copper productivity. The 1000 A/$m^2$ high current density is possible when rotating disc electrode is employed to reduce diffusion thickness. The copper electroplating with 1000 A/$m^2$ is possible at 400 rpm. Thiourea and glue were used to improve the electrodeposition behaviors during copper electrorefining process. Potentiodynamic polarization tests were conducted to investigate the effects of additives on copper electrodeposition. Galvanostatic tests were also conducted at 1000 A/$m^2$. Copper were electroplated on cylindrical rotating electrodes to give the uniform flow on the electrode surface. The lowest surface roughness was obtained when 16 ppm thiourea was added to the electrolytes. The surface roughness was increased with glue concentration. The surface hardness was not influenced by addition of glue. The copper nuclei were getting smaller with thiourea concentration, however there is no glue effects on copper nucleation.

The initial stages of electrochemical oxidative CuI film formation on Cu(111), as studied by means of Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), in-situ Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and ex-situ Synchrotron X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (SXPS), indicate a significant acceleration of copper oxidation in the presence of iodide anions in the electrolyte. A surface confined supersaturation with mobile CuI monomers first leads to the formation of a 2D-CuI film via nucleation and growth of a Cu/I-bilayer on-top of a pre-adsorbed iodide monolayer. Structurally, this 2D-CuI film is closely related to the (111) plane of crystalline CuI (zinc blende type). Interestingly, this film causes no significant passivation of the copper surface. In an advanced stage of copper dissolution a transition from the 2D- to a 3D-CuI growth mode can be observed.

In this paper, the time evolution of undoped GaN epilayers on a low-temperature GaN buffer layer grown on c-plane sapphire at a low pressure of 300 Torr was studied via a two-step growth condition in a horizontal MOCVD reactor. As a function of the growth time at a high-temperature, the surface morphology, structural quality, and optical and electrical properties were investigated using atomic force microscopy, high-resolution x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and Hall effect measurement, respectively. The root-mean-square roughness showed a drastic decrease after a certain period of surface roughening probably due to the initial island growth. The surface morphology also showed the island coalescence and the subsequent suppression of three-dimensional island nucleation. The structural quality of the GaN epilayer was improved with increasing growth time considering the symmetrical (002) and asymmetrical (102) rocking curves. The variations of room-temperature photoluminescence, background carrier concentration, and Hall mobility were measured and discussed.

This article introduces a facile nanoparticle self-assembly/annealing method for the preparation of nanoisland films. First, nanoparticle-polymer multilayer films are prepared with layer-by-layer assembly. Nanoparticle multilayer films are then annealed at $~500^{\circ}C$ in air to evaporate organic matters from the films. During the annealing process, the nanoparticles on the solid surface undergo nucleation and coalescence, resulting in the formation of nanostructured gold island arrays. By controlling the overall thickness (number of layers) of nanoparticle multilayer films, nanoisland films with various island density and different average sizes are obtained. The surface property of gold nanoisland films is further controlled by the self-assembly of alkanethiols, which results in an increased surface hydrophobicity of the films. The structure and characteristics of these nanoisland film arrays are found to be quite comparable to those of nanoisland films prepared by vacuum evaporation method. However, this self-assembly/annealing protocol is simple and requires only common laboratory supplies and equipment for the entire preparation process.
We report a facile synthetic approach of high-quality chromium(III) terephthalate [MIL-101(Cr)] by acetate-assisted method in the absence of toxic HF. Results indicate that the morphology and surface area of the MIL-101(Cr) can be tuned by modifying the molar ratio of acetate/$Cr(NO_3)_3$. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of MIL-101(Cr) synthesized at the optimized condition can exceed 3300 $m^2/g$. It is confirmed that acetate could promote the dissolution of di-carboxylic linker and accelerate the nucleation ratio. So the pure and small size of MIL-101(Cr) with clean pores can be obtained. $CO_2$, $CH_4$ and $N_2$ adsorption isotherms of the samples are studied at 298 K and 313 K. Compared with the traditional method, MIL-101(Cr) synthesized by acetate-assisted method possess enhanced $CO_2$ selective adsorption capacity. At 1.0 bar 298 K, it exhibits 47% enhanced $CO_2$ adsorption capacity. This may be attributed to the high surface area together with clean pores of MIL-101(Cr).
