Understanding interfacial phenomena has been one of the main research issues not only in semiconductors but only in life sciences. I have been trying to meet the atomic scale surface and interface analysis challenges from semiconductor industries and furthermore to extend the application scope to biomedical areas. Optical imaing has been most widely and successfully used for biomedical imaging but complementary ion beam imaging techniques based on mass spectrometry and ion scattering can provide more detailed molecular specific and nanoscale information In this presentation, I will review the 27 years history of medium energy ion scattering (MEIS) development at KRISS and DGIST for nanoanalysis. A electrostatic MEIS system constructed at KRISS after the FOM, Netherland design had been successfully applied for the gate oxide analysis and quantitative surface analysis. Recenlty, we developed time-of-flight (TOF) MEIS system, for the first time in the world. With TOF-MEIS, we reported quantitative compositional profiling with single atomic layer resolution for 0.5~3 nm CdSe/ZnS conjugated QDs and ultra shallow junctions and FINFET's of As implanted Si. With this new TOF-MEIS nano analysis technique, details of nano-structured materials could be measured quantitatively. Progresses in TOF-MEIS analysis in various nano & bio technology will be discussed. For last 10 years, I have been trying to develop multimodal nanobio imaging techniques for cardiovascular and brain tissues. Firstly, in atherosclerotic plaque imaging, using, coherent anti-stokes raman scattering (CARS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) multimodal analysis showed that increased cholesterol palmitate may contribute to the formation of a necrotic core by increasing cell death. Secondly, surface plasmon resonance imaging ellipsometry (SPRIE) was developed for cell biointerface imaging of cell adhesion, migration, and infiltration dynamics for HUVEC, CASMC, and T cells. Thirdly, we developed an ambient mass spectrometric imaging system for live cells and tissues. Preliminary results on mouse brain hippocampus and hypotahlamus will be presented. In conclusions, multimodal optical and mass spectrometric imaging privides overall structural and morphological information with complementary molecular specific information, which can be a useful methodology for biomedical studies. Future challenges in optical and mass spectrometric imaging for new biomedical applications will be discussed.
The purpose of this study was to observe the healing process and the distribution of fibronectin in injured condylar cartilage and bone by using LM and SEM. In order to perform this study, 40 male rat, weighing about 250g were selected. Under general anesthesia with Pentobarbital sodium, condylar cartilage and neck bone were resected. Then, the wound was irrigated with saline and closed with 5-0 chromic catgut and 4-0 silk by layer-to-layer suturing. The experimental rats were sacrificed by perfusion with 3% paraformaldehyde at 1st and 4th week after operation. The condylar process and surrounding tissues were cut, demineralized, dehydrated and embedded in paraffin. The histological observation of the specimens in LM level was performed after H-E stain and Azan stain. For localization of fibronectin, immunostaining was achieved by the avidin-biotin complex method. To study the change on condylar surface, the specimens were dehydrated, dried, gold coated and were observed with a scanning electron microscope(Hitachi S-2300). The results were as follows ; 1. The cartilage group and the bone group were repaired with epiphyseal cartilage layer on the cut surface as the normal control group. 2. The cut surface was repaired more quickly in the cartilage group than in the bone group. 3. Chondrocytes, diferentiated during healing, were stained strongly to anti-fibronectin, and fibronectin was supposed to participatein chondrocyte differentiation and cartilagenous matrix formation. 4. Fibronectin was distributed more in the new bone than in the old bone, and the osteoblasts surrounding it were also stained strongly. Fibronectin was supposed to participate in new bone matrix formation. 5. Fibronectin is supposed to be associated with the differentiation, migration and adhesion of chondrocyte and osteoblast and to participate in endochondral bone formation.

The Friar Tuck Abandoned Coal Mine site is one of the most complexly disturbed areas in the midwestern United States. The deposits of gob and tailings contain high concentrations of pyrite, whose oxidation contributes to the acidification of soil and water and prevents the growth of vegetation. In an effort to quantitatively evaluate the effects of reclamation techniques, detailed monitoring program was performed. Water samples were collected from surface water, groundwater, and pore water from the unsaturated zone during a period of five years. According to the results, The spoil deposits are a relatively minor source of contamination and gob piles are the source of severe contamination to surface water and groundwater. But, loess and till beneath the gob piles effectively prevent the contaminated water migration from the source. Surface layers of the gob piles and the tailing deposits are less toxic than the interior of the deposits as a consequence of weathering over several decades. Acid mine drainage is in a post-peak stage and acid formation potential is probably situated in the unsaturated zone of refuse.
$BaTiO_3$ thin film was electrochemically deposited on Ti electrode in a 0.4 M $Ba(OH)_2$ solution of $85^{\circ}C$ using a current pulse waveform. Both $BaTiO_3$ crystallinity and faradaic efficiency for the film formation were enhanced with the increase of cathodic current density and pulse time. Based on the surface analysis and electrochemical studies, it was suggested that, during cathodic pulsed, the surface pH increase due to the reduction of $H_2O$ accelerates the structural changes of Ti oxides which were formed during anodic cycle. Prior to experiments, Ti oxides were intentionally grown in 0.1 M $H_2SO_4$ solution and the effect of initial oxide film thickness on the $BaTiO_3$ film formation was investigated. The migration of $Ti^{+4}$ ions through the oxide film was retarded with the increase of film thickness and it was observed that the crystallization of $BaTiO_3$ was only limited to the defect area of surface oxides.

A numerical model was developed using COMSOL Multiphysics to evaluate groundwater flow that causes radionuclide migration in the unsaturated zone of a near-surface disposal facility, which is considered as a domestic low and an intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility. Each scenario was modeled by constructing a two-dimensional domain that included the disposal vault, backfill, disposal cover, and unsaturated aquifer. A comparison of the continuous and intermittent rainfall conditions exhibited no significant difference in any of the factors considered except the wave pattern of water saturation. The input data, such as porosity and residual water content of the unsaturated aquifer, were observed to not have a significant effect on the groundwater flow. However, the hydraulic conductivity of the unsaturated aquifer was found to have a significant effect on the groundwater flow. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the hydraulic conductivity of an unsaturated aquifer to determine the extent of groundwater infiltration into the disposal vault.

Two landfills of this study containing municipal wastes without any bottom liner and leachate treatment system have different landfill age, waste volume and most importantly different hydrogeologic settings. The one (Cheonan) is situated in an open flat area while the other (Wonju) is located in a valley. In the interior of the landfills, typical anaerobic conditions revealed by low DO and ${NO_3}^-$ concentrations, negative ORP values, high $NH_3$, alkalinity and $Cl^-$ concentrations were observed. Generally higher levels of contaminants were detected in the dry season while those were greatly lowered in the wet season. Significantly large decrease of Cl concentration in the wet season indicates that the dilution or mixing is one of dominant attenuation mechanisms of leachate. But detailed variation behaviors in the two landfills are largely different and they were most dependent on permeability of surface and subsurface layers. The intermediately permeable surface of 1.he landfills receives part of direct rainfall infiltration but most rainwater is lost to fast runoff. The practically impermeable surface of clayey silt (paddy field) at immediately adjacent to the Cheonan landfill boundary prevented direct rainwater infiltration and hence redox condition of the groundwaters were largely affected by that of the upper landfill and the less permeable materials beneath the paddy fields prohibited dispersion of the landfill leachate into downgradient area. In the Wonju landfill, there exist three different permeability divisions, the landfill region, the sandy open field and the paddy field. Roles of the landfill and paddy regions are very similar to those at the Cheonan. The very permeable sandy field receiving a large amount of rainwater infiltration plays a key role in controlling redox condition of the downgradient area and contaminant migration.

The phenomenon of decrease in sizing efficiency when the stock temperature is increased is well recognized as summer sizing, and this is believed to be caused by uneven distribution of sizing agents on paper surface most often incurred by coagulation of sizing agents. When unevenly sized paper is used as coating base stock, nonuniform consolidation of the coating layer may result, which, in turn, causes uneven distribution of binder on coating surface. This causes nonuniform ink absorption to produce print mottle. In this study the effects of simple or polymeric electrolytes, storage temperature and time on the coagulation of cationic dispersed rosin size were investigated using a turbidity measurement method which was verified to correlate well with the particle size of rosin emulsion or its coagulates. Handsheets sized with rosin dispersions coagulated under various conditions were prepared and their sizing degree and coated paper properties including gloss and ink density were examined. The relationship between the sizing nonuniformity of coated papers and its ink absorption property was evaluated. Turbidity of rosin emulsion increased as the storage temperature and time were increased. Addition of simple or polymeric electrolytes caused reduction in $zeta$ -potential of the rosin dispersion and accelerated the coagulation tendency substantially. Reversion of the $zeta$ -potential of rosin dispersion, however, did not occur when coagulation was induced with simple electrolytes. On the other hand, addition of an anionic polyelectrolyte reversed the $zeta$ -potential of the flocculated rosin dispersion. This indicated that electrical double layer compaction and bridging flocculation were coagulation mechanisms for simple and polymeric electrolytes, respectively. Sizing degree decreased as coagulation of rosin was increased. Paper gloss, ink gloss and ink density were increased when sizing degree of base stock was increased most probably due to prevention of base paper swelling and increased binder migration to coating surface. This suggested that uneven printing ink density occurred when uneven sizing development was induced by coagulation of rosin particles.

The distributions of common minke whales observed in the East Sea in ten surveys in May of 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2020 were investigated using satellite sea surface temperature (SST) derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS). Most of the minke whales were observed in the waters off the Korean Peninsula at 36-38.5° N, which is expected as the highly productive coastal upwelling area. Yet, no minke whale was observed in 2006 when a relatively larger scale coastal upwelling occurred with SST at 11℃. In 2016 and 2020, the warm water higher than 17℃ extended widely in the area, and the minke whales were observed in the offshore waters, deeper than 1,000 m. 87.5% of minke whales observed in May appeared in the SST from 13 to 16℃, and they seemed to avoid relatively high temperatures. This suggests that optimum habitat water temperature of minke whales in May is 13-16℃. The SST in the area had risen 1.67℃ from 2003 to 2021, and it was remarkably higher than in other parts of the surrounding areas. The future temperature rising may change the route and timing of the migration of minke whales in the study area.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of surface-treatment by zinc salts on break-through and adsorption capacity of toluene. Firstly, the coconut activated carbon treated the surface with zinc salts, were exposed by the spike sample(toluene, 69.02ppm, $260.1mg/m^3$), and then the effects of zinc salts were examined by using the gas adsorption kinetics. The results obtained were as follows : 1) BET(Brumaure Emmett Teller) surface area were $954.4m^3/g$ in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $Zn(NO_3)_3$$6H_2O$, and $830.3m^2/g$ in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $ZnCl_2$. 2) Migration was decreased in coconut activated carbon treated with the thin level of zinc salts. 3) Breakthrough volume were 73.07 L in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $Zn(NO_3)_3$$6H_2O$, and 72.76 L in charcoal treated with 0.0001 N $ZnCl_2$. 4) ${\tau}$ values(the time required for 50% breakthrough) were 1046.1 min in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $ZnCl_2$ and 921.2 min in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $Zn(NO_3)_3$$6H_2O$. 5) Maximum adsorption capacity was 53.9 mg/tube in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $ZnCl_2$ and 47.4 mg/tube in coconut activated carbon treated with 0.0001 N $Zn(NO_3)_3$$6H_2O$. In conclusion, the coconut activated carbon treated the surface with the thin concentration of zinc salts, decreased the breakthrough and increased the BET surface area and the adsorption capacity in case of sampling airborne toluene.
Copper is known as a replacement for aluminum wire which is used for semiconductor. Because specific resistance of Cu ($1.67{\mu}{\Omega}$-cm) is lower than that of Al ($2.66{\mu}{\Omega}$-cm), Cu reduce RC delay time. Although melting point of Cu($1085^{\circ}C$) is higher than melting point of Al, Cu have characteristic to easily react with Silicon(Si) in low temperature, and it isn't good at adhesive strength with Si. For above these reason, research of diffusion barrier to prevent reaction between Cu and Si and to raise adhesive strength is steadily advanced. Our study group have researched on W-C-N (tungsten-carbon-nitrogen) Diffusion barrier for preventing diffusion of Cu through semiconductor. By recent studies, It's reported that W-C-N diffusion barrier can even precent Cu and Si diffusing effectively at high temperature. In this treatise, we vaporized different proportion of N into diffusion barrier to research Cu's Electromigration based on the results and studied surface hardness in the heat process using nano scale indentation system. We gain that diffusion barrier containing nitrogen is more stable for Cu's electromigration and has stronger surface hardness in heat treatment process.
