Alumina- and yttria-coated SiC powder was prepared by the surface-induced precipitation method, and sintered properties of silicon carbide prepared from this powder were investigated. After a well dispersion of SiC powders in the aqueous solution of $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $Y_2(SO_4)_3$, the mixed precursors of aluminum hydroxide, aluminum carbonate, yttrium hydroxide, and yttrium carbonate were precipitated on the surfaces of SiC particles through the hydrolysis reaction of urea. SiC specimens with alumina and yttria exhibit, 97.8% of theoretical density after the sintering at $1900^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. During annealing at $2000^{\circ}C$, $\beta$longrightarrow$\alpha$ phase transformation of SiC had taken place and resulted with a rodlike microstructure. Toughness of sintered SiC was enhanced by crack deflection around the rodlike grains. In case of annealing less than that of 3 hr, the fracture toughness of SiC was slightly improved with increasing the amount of sintering aid. However, annealed specimens for a long time showed constant fracture toughness even though the amount of sintering aid increased. It is resulted that the main factor for toughening in annealed SiC for a long time is the pullout effect of rodlike grains during the propagation of cracks, and the amount of sintering aids is less effective on the fracture toughness of SiC.
YBCO film was synthesized by using a new approach to the TFA-MOD method. In the fabrication process, $Y_2Ba_1Cu_1O_x\;and\;Ba_3Cu_5O_8$ powders were used as precursors (the so called '211 process'), instead of Y-, Ba-, and Cu-based acetates, and dissolved in trifluoroacetic acid followed by calcining and firing heat treatment. Consequently, we successfully fabricated YBCO film and evaluated the phase formation, texture evolution, and critical properties as a function of the calcining and firing temperature and humidity, in order to explore its possible application in coated conductor fabrication. The films were calcined at $430-460^{\circ}C$ and then fired at $750-800^{\circ}C\;in\;a\;0-20\%$ humidified $Ar-O_2$ atmosphere. We observed that $BaF_2$ phase was effectively reduced and that a sharp and strong biaxial texture formed under humidified atmosphere leading to increased critical properties. In addition, we found that the microstructure varied significantly with the firing temperature: the grain grew further, the film became denser, and the degree of texture and phase purity varied as the firing temperature increased. For the film fired at $775^{\circ}C$ after calcining at $460^{\circ}C$, the critical current was obtained to be 39 A/cm-width (corresponding critical current density is $2.0\;MA/cm^2$ which was probably attributed to such factors as the enhanced phase purity and out-of-plane texture, the moderate film density and grain size, and crack-free surface.
In this review, we describe the electrochemical properties of spinel-type lithium manganese oxides $(Li_xMn_2O_4)$ and their failure modes encountered in 4 V lithium rechargable cells. The long-term cyclability (reversibility) of spinel electrodes is determined partly by the purity, size and distribution of spinel particles, and also by the microstructure of electrode plates. A proper selection of electrolytes is another important task in cyclability enhancements. In the spinel preparation, impurity formation and cation mixing should be minimized. The carbon content in composite cathodes should also be minimized to the extent where the cell polarization does not bring about adverse effects on cell performances. The binder content should be optimized on the basis of dispersion of component materials and mechanical strength of the plates. Cathodic capacity losses arising from solvent oxidation and spinel dissolution can be mitigated by using electrolytes composed of carbonates and/or fluorine-containing lithium salts. The carbon additives may be selected after a trade-off between the cell polarization in composite cathodes and the solvent oxidation on carbon surface.

The last stage blades of a low pressure (LP) turbine get frequently fractured because of stress corrosion cracking. This is because they operate in a severe corrosive environment that is caused by the impurities dissolved in condensed steam and high stress due to high speed rotation. To improve the reliability of the blades under severe conditions, 12% Cr martensitic stainless steel, having excellent corrosion resistance and higher strength, is widely used as the blade material. This paper shows the result of root cause analysis on a blade which got fractured suddenly during normal operation. Testing of mechanical properties and microstructure examination were performed on the fractured blade and on a blade in sound condition. The results of testing of mechanical properties of the fractured blade showed that the hardness were higher but impact energy were lower, and were not meeting the criteria as per the material certificate specification. This result showed that the fractured blade became embrittled. The branch-type crack was found to have propagated through the grain boundary and components of chloride and sulfur were detected on the fractured surface. Based on these results, the root cause of fracture was confirmed to be stress corrosion cracking.

A-axis oriened YBCO thin flims were grown on $LaAIO_{3}$ single crystal substrate by off-axis rf magnetron sputtering method. We used two kinds of process to get a-axis oriented fi1ms;one-step process and two-step process. In one-step process, films are grown in single step in which substrate temperature( $T_s$) is in the range of $590^{\circ}C$ to $680^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, in two step process a-axis oriented thin film templates i f about 30nm thickness is deposited at low temperature first, and subsequently films are grown at elevated temperature to the final thickness of about 100nm. In the case of one step process($T_s$ ~)$600^{\circ}C$), prefered a-axis orientation is dominant and Cu-rich phases segregate at the surface. Segregations decrease and ($00 \ell$) peaks increase upon increasing $T_s$. The films prepared by two step method appeared to have strong(h00) peaks as the deposition rate increased. Microstructure shows pin holes resulted from mixed phases of a-axis and c-axis oriented films. In both cases of one step and two step process, as TS decreases, prepared films show stronger a-axis orientation. However electrical properties of the films are depressed with lower $T_c$ and wider $\Delta T$ as $T_s$ decreases.
Comparison of fruit bodies of Pleurotus ostreatus cultivar chunchu No .2 grown on the sawdust, rice straw and cotton waste substrates revealed differences in the pattern of differentiation of hyphal compartments. Required period for primordium induction of fruit bodies grown on sawdust substrate was 13 days. Physical structure shown as hardness of stipes grown on the sawdust substrate, fruit bodies were harden than control. Pileocystidia were well developed on the surface of pileus in the fruit body cultivated on rice straw. Microstructures of fruit body grown on the sawdust and cotton wastes substrates shown fast-discharge of basidiospore and sytoms ageing. Hyphae of fruit bodies formed on sawdust substrate had less stainable cytoplasmic material and many more vacuoles than hyphae of fruit bodies formed on synthetic substrate with 50% of pine sawdust, 30% of cotton seed hull and 20 of beet pulp(control).

The cooling process referred to as Tempcore has been applied to produce a high-strength rebar. Excellent rebar with strength and weldability can be manufactured from mild steel without the addition of alloying elements by using the Tempcore process. However, there are limitations to evaluating the effect of various chemical compositions and cooling conditions within a site facility. In this study, we developed an apparatus to simulate the Tempcore process and obtained microstructures with a hardened surface layer, an intermediate region and a soft inner core. The experimental apparatus has been equipped with a cooler set that is the same as the site facility and consists of a pump line that supplies pressure of 12-13 bar and flow rate of up to $50m^3/h$. In accordance with the simulation result of steel grade SD400 that requires more than 400 MPa of yield strength, both the hardened area ratio and the hardness with respect to each cooling depth were found to agree well with the product.
Considering that decision in conservation treatment for damaged objects should consider not only various options of methodology of intervention but also possible consequences of different types of intervention, it is a difficult task to decide and propose clear and safest solution of preserving an object. In addition, it should be constantly challenged by conservators even if it is proved technique or methodology in a past treatment. Therefore, there is no absolute solution which can be applied to all practice but each decision can be different case by case. It is not possible to estimate the way how the present condition of material and environmental aspects would affect to the condition of an object in future. However if conservators keep trying to set out various ways of analysing pro and against effect of past treatments, it would be able to provide useful logics of proving efficiency and appropriateness of a certain treatment. Understanding that the advantage of laser technique is to adopt a way of cleaning an object without making a direct contact, which is different from other techniques, this paper aims at securing stability of laser techniques, although it remains a limitation in the compatibility to all other materials. This study has examined reacting process on the painted pigments against laser beam by using CLSM in order for it to display both the problems from such reacting process and the efficiency of it as a cleaning methodology. It has intended to estimate the result of laser techniques and propose the range of applicability.
Ancient mirrors are generally made of bronze, and it is very rare to find cases of iron mirrors excavated domestically. In this study, the unidentified ferrous artifact was treated for conservation, and was identified as a mirror. In this process, the sample was taken and analyzed for microstructure, and the manufacturing technology was studied. Analysis involved optical microscope, micro-hardness tester, and SEM-EDS. As the result of analysis, iron mirror structure exist not almost non-metallic inclusions, and partially network cementite was observed. This appears to have been caused by reduced carbon content due to decarburizing the cast iron in the solid state mirror which was created by cast iron. The ledeburite structure of the casting has difficult to cut or polish because has great hardness by high carbon content. Thus, the cast iron mirror was decarburized at a temperature under $850^{\circ}C$ with CO or $CO_2$ blocked, which reduced the hardness of the iron mirror and made it possible to polish the mirror surface. This deformation of structure according to carbon content results from such manufacturing technology.
$TiO_2$ thin films were spin coated on commercial Nickel-Silver with 2%Ti-naphthanate toluene solution by sol-gel process. The thin films were heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ for 2min and then decorative-protective coating was obtained. The conditions for gold colored coating, and the morphology, microstructure and color of the coating surface were have been characterized by Optical microscope, Photospectrometer and XRD. The heating temperature of colored-$TiO_2$ coating was $500^{\circ}C$ and was preferable. The average thickness of 1 time coating was $0.24{\mu}m$ and the total thickness increased linearly as a function of the coating time. The color of amorphous colored-$TiO_2$ coating was changed from gold to dark redish gold with coating time. 'L' as lightness and 'b' were decreased to red, but 'a' was decreased to blue after increase with coating time.
