  • We investigated the effect of $BaTiO_3$ powder content on the dielectric constant of epoxy/$BaTiO_3$ composite embedded capacitor films (ECFs). Variations of the dielectric constant of epoxy/$BaTiO_3$ composite ECFs with unimodal $BaTiO_3$ powder content were measured. To explain this result, density of the ECFs was measured, and surface and cross section images of the ECFs were observed. In addition, variations of the dielectric constant of epoxy/$BaTiO_3$ composite ECFs with various bimodal combinations were measured. In the case of unimodal powder, the maximum dielectric constant was about 60 at $60\;vol\%$ S4 powder. And more powder addition lowered the dielectric constant of the ECFs, which was due to voids or pores formation by excess $BaTiO_3$ powder. In the case of bimodal combination, $75vol\%\;BaTiO_3$ powder loading and the dielectric constant of 90 were achieved using $S_5+C_1$ combination, biggest and smallest powder combination.

  • The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of Acid Red 66, adsorbed by granular activated carbon, were investigated on areas of initial concentration, contact time, and temperature. The adsorption equilibrium data were applied to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Redlich-Peterson, and Temkin isotherms. The agreement was found to be the highest in the Freundlich model. From the determined Freundlich separation factor (1/n = 0.125 ~ 0.232), the adsorption of Acid Red 66 by granular activated carbon could be employed as an effective treatment method. Temkin's constant related to adsorption heat (BT = 2.147 ~ 2.562 J mol-1) showed that this process was physical adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second order model with good agreement. The results of the intraparticle diffusion equation showed that the inclination of the second straight line representing the intraparticle diffusion was smaller than that of the first straight line representing the boundary layer diffusion. Therefore, it was confirmed that intraparticle diffusion was the rate-controlling step. From thermodynamic experiments, the activation energy was determined as 35.23 kJ mol-1, indicating that the adsorption of Acid Red 66 was physical adsorption. The negative Gibbs free energy change (ΔG = -0.548 ~ -7.802 kJ mol-1) and the positive enthalpy change (ΔH = +109.112 kJ mol-1) indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process, respectively. The isosteric heat of adsorption increased with the increase of surface loading, indicating lateral interactions between the adsorbed dye molecules.

  • This paper deals with the numerical analysis by the (mite element method introducing Biot's theory of consolidation and the modified Cambridge model proposed by Roscoe school of Cambridge University as constitutive equation and using Christian-Boehner's technique. Especially, time interval and division of elements are investigated in vies of stability and economics. In order to check the validity of author's program, the program was tested with one-dimensional consolidation case followed by Terzaghi's exact solution and with the results of the Magnan's analysis for existing banking carried out for study at Cubzac-les-ports in France. The main conclusions obtained are summarized as follows: 1. In the case of one-dimensional consolidation, the more divided the elements are near the surface of the foundation, the higher the accuracy of the numerical analysis is. 2. For the time interval, it is stable to divide 20 times per 1-lg cycle. 3. At the element which has long drain distance, the Mandel-fryer effect appears due to time lag. 4. Lateral displacement at an initial loading stage predicted by author's program, in which the load was assumed as not concentrative. but rather in grid form, is well consistent with the value of observation. 5. The pore water pressure predicted by author's program has a better accordance with the value of observation compared with Magnan's results. 6. Optimum construction control by Matsuo-Kawamura's method is possible with the predicted lateral displacement and settlement by the program.

  • Purpose: Development of a latent antimicrobial soft liner is strongly needed to overcome a possible inflammation related with its dimensional degrade or surface roughness. Modified tissue conditioner (TC) containing chitosan-doped silver nanoparticles (ChSN) complexes were synthesized and assessed for their characterizations. Materials and methods: ChSN were preliminarily synthesized from silver nitrate (AgNO3), sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a reducing agent and chitosan biopolymer as a capping agent. Ultraviolet-visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were conducted to confirm the stable reduction of nanoparticles with chitosan. Modified TC blended with ChSN by 0 (control), 1.0, 3.0 and 5.0 % mass fraction were mechanically tested by ultimate tensile strength (UTS), silver ion elution and color stability (n=7). Results: At 24 hour and 7 day storage periods, UTS values were not significant (P>.05) as compared with pristine TC (control) and silver ion was detected with the dose-dependent values of ChSN incorporated. Color stability of TC were influenced by ChSN add, with the higher doses, the significantly greater color changes (P<.05). Conclusion: A stable synthesized ChSN was acquired and modified TC loading ChSN was characterized as silver ion releasing without detrimental physical property. For its clinical application, antimicrobial test, color control and multifactor investigations are still required.

  • Statement of problem. Porcelain repair mainly involves replacement with composite resin, but the bond strength between composite resin and all-ceramic coping materials has not been studies extensively. Purpose. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of composite resin and ceramic etching pattern on shear bond strength of Empress2 ceramic and observe the change of microstructure of ceramic according to etching methods. Material and methods. Eighty-five cylinder shape ceramic specimens (diameter 5mm, IPS Empress 2 core materials) embeded by acrylic resin were used for this study. The ceramic were specimens divided into sixteen experimental groups with 5 specimens in each group and were etched with phosphoric acid(37%, 65%) & hydrofluoric acid (4%, 9%) according to different etching times(30s, 60s, 120s 180s). All etched ceramic surfaces were examined morphologically using SEM(scanning electron microscopy). Etched surfaces of ceramic specimens were coated with silane (Monobond-S) & adhesive(Heliobond) and built up composite resin using Teflon mold. Accomplished specimens were tested under shear loading until fracture on universal testing machine at a crosshead speed 1mm/min; the maximum load at fracture(kg) was recorded. Shear bond strength data were analyzed with one way ANOVA and Duncan tests.(P<.05) Results. Maximum shear bond strength was $30.07{\pm}2.41(kg)$ when the ceramic was etched with 4% hydrofluoric acid at 120s. No significant difference was found between phosphoric etchant group and control group with respect to shear bond strength. Conclusion. Empress 2 ceramic surface was not etched by phosphoric acid, but etched by hydrofluoric acid.

  • HPFRCCs (high-performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites), which is relatively more ductile and has the characteristic of high toughness with high fiber volume fractions, can be used in structures subjected to extreme loads and exposed to durability problems. In the case of PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) fiber, it is noted by former studies that around 2% fiber volume fractions contributes to the most effective performance at HPFRCCs. In this study, flexural tests were carried out to evaluate the flexural behavior of HPFRCCs and to optimize mix proportions. Two sets of hybrid fiber reinforced high performance specimens with total fiber volume fraction of 2 % were tested: the first set prepared by addition of short and long PVA fibers at different combination of fiber volume fractions, and the second set by addition of steel. In addition, in order to assess the performances of the HPFRCCs against to high strain rates, drop weight tests were conducted. Lastly, the sprayed FRP was applied on the bottom surface of specimens to compare their impact responses with non-reinforcing specimens. The experimental results showed that the specimen prepared with 1.6% short fibers (REC 15) and 0.4% long fiber (RF4000) outperformed the other specimens under flexure, and impact loading.

  • This paper deals with basic theories and some numerical results on structural optimization for geodesic dome. First of all, the space efficiency of geodesic dome is investigated by using the ratio of icosahedron's surface area to the internal volume enclosed by it. The procedure how to create the geodesic dome is also provided in systematic way and implemented and utilized into the design optimization code ISADO-OPT. The mathematical programming technique is introduced to find out the optimum pattern of member size of geodesic dome against a point load. In this study, total weight of structure is considered as the objective function to be minimized and the displacement occurred at loading point and member stresses of geodesic dome are used as the constraint functions. The finite difference method is used to calculate the design sensitivity of objective function with respect to design variables. The SLP, SQP and MFDM available in the optimizer DoT is used to search optimum member size patterns of geodesic dome. It is found to be that the optimum member size pattern can be efficiently obtained by using the proposed design optimization technique and numerical results can be used as benchmark test as a basic reference solution for design optimization of dome structures.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse the magnitude and distribution of stresses using a Photoelastic model from and distal - extension removable partial dentures With four designed indirect retainers. The designs of the indirect retainers were as follows : Design No. 1 : Aker's clasp on 1st bicuspid with no indirect retainer. Design No. 2 : Aker's clasp on 1st bicuspid with indirect retainer on canine. Design No. 3 : Extension of the reciprocal arm of Aker's clasp toward incisal rest on canine. Design No. 4 : Connection with the indirect retainer as in No. 2 and extension of reciprocal arm of Aker' s clasp. A photoelastic model was made of the epoxy resin(PL - 1) and hardner(PLH - 1) and coated with plastic cement -1(PC -1) at the lingual surface of the epoxy model and set with chrome - cobalt partial dentures. A unilateral vertical load of 10kg to the right 1st molar and a vertical load of 10kg to the middle portion of the metal bar crossing both the 1st molars of the right and left, were applied. With the use of specially designed jig, fixture; loading device and the reflective circular polariscope, we obtained the following results : 1. When the unilateral vertical load and the vertical load of the middle portion of the metal bar were applied, design No. 2, 3 and 4 exhibited the higher stress concentration at the root apices and their surrounding tissues of the primary and secondary abutment teeth. 2. When the unilateral vertical load applied to design No. 2,3 and 4 the root apices of the primary and secondary abutment teeth and their surrounding tissues and the nonloaded side of edentulous area exhibited and even stress distribution. 3. When the vertical load was applied, the stress concentration fringe in the primary and secondary abutment teeth was in the order of No. 1,4,2 and 3. 4. No.1 and 4 exhibited the higher distrorted stress concentration at the primary teeth and the edentulous area in the nonloaded side. 5. No.2 design reduced the stresses at the apices of the alveoli of the primary abutment teeth bilaterally as well as on the crest of the residual ridge on the nonloaded side. 6. No. 2 design exhibited the most favorable stress distribution.

  • In this study, the effect of particle size of genistein-loaded solid lipid particulate systems on drug dissolution behavior and oral bioavailability was investigated. Genistein-loaded solid lipid microparticles and nanoparticles were prepared with glyceryl palmitostearate. Except for the particle size, other properties of genistein-loaded solid lipid microparticles and nanoparticles such as particle composition and drug loading efficiency and amount were similarly controlled to mainly evaluate the effect of different particle sizes of the solid lipid particulate systems on drug dissolution behavior and oral bioavailability. The results showed that genistein-loaded solid lipid microparticles and nanoparticles exhibited a considerably increased drug dissolution rate compared to that of genistein bulk powder and suspension. The microparticles gradually released genistein as a function of time while the nanoparticles exhibited a biphasic drug release pattern, showing an initial burst drug release, followed by a sustained release. The oral bioavailability of genistein loaded in solid lipid microparticles and nanoparticles in rats was also significantly enhanced compared to that in bulk powders and the suspension. However, the bioavailability from the microparticles increased more than that from the nanoparticles mainly because the rapid drug dissolution rate and rapid absorption of genistein because of the large surface area of the genistein-solid lipid nanoparticles cleared the drug to a greater extent than the genistein-solid lipid microparticles did. Therefore, the findings of this study suggest that controlling the particle size of solid-lipid particulate systems at a micro-scale would be a promising strategy to increase the oral bioavailability of genistein.

  • Four-point bending tests were performed to investigate the interfacial adhesion of Cu-Cu bonding fabricated by thermo-compression process for three dimensional packaging. A pair of Cu-coated Si wafers was bonded under a pressure of 15 kN at $350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, followed by post annealing at $350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The bonded wafers were diced into $30\;mm\;{\times}\;3\;mm$ pieces for the test. Each specimen had a $400-{\mu}m$-deep notch along the center. An optical inspection module was installed in the testing apparatus to observe crack initiation at the notch and crack propagation over the weak interface. The tests were performed under a fixed loading speed, and the corresponding load was measured. The measured interfacial adhesion energy of the Cu-to-Cu bonding was $9.75\;J/m^2$, and the delaminated interfaces were analyzed after the test. The surface analysis shows that the delamination occurred in the interface between $SiO_2$ and Ti.
