This study was investigated the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and hardness of internally hardened ductile cast iron roll. The following conclusions were obtained. Some of the graphite was decreased and a bainite was produced by heat treatment. It decreased due to the decomposition of some of the cementite precipitated in the as-cast by heat treatment, but there was no significant change when it reached a certain depth. Hardness increased due to formation of bainite by heat treatment. On the surface, the hardness decreased due to the decrease in the amount of transformation of cementite into bainite, but there was no change beyond a certain depth.
Chromium-carbon (Cr-C) and chromium-carbon-phosphorus (Cr-C-P) alloy deposits using trivalent chromium sulfate baths containing potassium formate were prepared to study their current efficiency, hardness change and phase transformations behavior with heat treatment, respectively. The current efficiencies of Cr-C and Cr-C-P alloy deposits increase with increasing current density in the range of 15-35 A/dm$^2$. Carbon content of Cr-C and phosphorous of Cr-C-P layers decreases with increasing current density, whereas, the carbon content of Cr-C-P layer is almost constant with the current density. Cr-C deposit shows crystallization at $400^{\circ}C$ and has (Cr+Cr$_{ 23}$$C_{6}$) phases at $800^{\circ}C$. Cr-C-P deposit shows crystallization at $600^{\circ}C$ and has (Cr+Cr$_{23}$$C_{6}$$+Cr_3$P) phases at $800^{\circ}C$. The hardness of Cr-C and Cr-C-P deposits after heating treatment for one hour increase up to Hv 1640 and Hv 1540 and decrease about Hv 820 and Hv 1270 with increasing annealing temperature in the range of $400~^{\circ}C$, respectively. The hardness change with annealing is due to the order of occurring of chromium crystallization, precipitation hardening effect, softening and grain growth with temperature. Less decrease of hardness of Cr-C-P deposit after annealing above $700^{\circ}C$ is related to continuous precipitation of $Cr_{23}$$C_{6}$ and $Cr_3$P phases which retard grain growth at the temperature.
Surface heat treatment using a laser beam or an electron beam is studied through numerical analyses and experiments. For the surface heat treatment process, a theoretical model is developed to predict the effects of laser beam power, travel speed and properties of a workpiece on the depth and width of the heat affected zone(HAZ). The shape of HAZ and the hardness of heat-treated surface are experimentally obtained using an electron beam. Three materials(SS41, S45C and S55C) are selected as workpiece materials. The hardness of HAZ is increased up to 3 times for materials of a low carbon content. The results of the numerical analysis are compared with those of experiments. The comparison shows that the numerical model predicts larger depths and widths.
The purpose of this study was to measure the Micro-Knoop Hardness of three commercial visible light-cured composite resins (Plurafil-super, He1iosit and Durafi) according to the difference of depth and shade. Specimens of the resin were prepapared in plastic tubes 5mm in diameter with height of 5mm, and the tubes were put into the columned holes in stone molds. The molds were exposed to the visible light through the hole 5mm in diameter in metal plate. Specimens were sectioned (longitudinally) with disk. Knoop Hardness measurements were made at the depth of surface, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0mm from the surface to the deep portion. Knoop Hardness numbers were taken on each depth under 20gm load for 10 seconds with Shimadzu Tester. The following results were: 1. The highest hardness value was measured at 0.5mm depth. Then the deeper the depth, the lesser the hardness was observed. 2. The value of hardness was directly propotional to the time of exposure to the light. 3. The hardness of light shade resin was higher than the that of the dark shade. 4. The pattern of hardness change at varying depth is similar to all the experimental materials with no relation to the shade nor exposure time.
Although wear resistance of material improves with increasing its hardness, it is known that the wear resistance of steel is varied with hardness of counter material. In this context, wear properties of steel must be depended on the difference of hardness between the testpiece and the counter material. In this study, using the pin-on-disc type wear machine, annealed carbon steels were tested against ahoy tool steels with various levels of hardness. Then the changes of wear properties of carbon steel according to the hardness of counter material were investigated and the morphology of worn surface after test were evaluated. The results indicate that if there are no remarkable difference of hardness between them, wear resistance of carbon steel in running-in wear decreases with increasing the hardness of counter material. However, its wear properties at the range of high sliding speed have no relation with hardness of counter material. It is clear that wear properties is influenced by the formation of oxide of steel on their worn surface during wear.
Statement of problem : Removable partial denture and complete denture often require denture base relines to improve the fittness against tissue-bearing mucosa because of the gradual change in edentulous ridge contour and resorption of underlyng bony structure. Self-curing hard reline resins offers the immediate and relatively inexpensive means to be recondition the surface of denture base directly However weak bond between denture base resin and reline material can harbor bacteria, promote staining, or result in complete separation of the two materials. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of denture cleansers on bond strength and surface hardness of reline resin to denture base resin Denture base resin beams($60.0{\times}15.0{\times}3.0mm$) were made with Lucitone 199. Material and methods : 10mm section was removed from the center of each specimen. The samples were replaced in the molds and the space of l0mm sections were packed with Tokuso Rebase reline material. The specimens were immersed in denture cleansers (Polident, Cleadent) and were evaluated after 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks. The bond strength and surface hardness of self-curing hard reline materials to heat-curing denture base resin were measured using an UTM (universal testing machine). Results and conclusion : 1) There was no significant difference of usage, kind, and denture cleaner by application time on the bonding strength of self-curing hard reline resin to denture base resin. 2) There was no significant difference of usage, kind, and denture cleaner by application time on the surface hardness, but the surface hardness showed decreasing tendency, as the time of immersion was extended. 3) The failure modes of the specimens was initially adhesive failure and finally cohesive failure of self-curing hard reline resin.
The micro Vickers hardness and internal stress of Ni-Fe metal thin film synthesized by electrodeposition method at $25^{\circ}C$ were studied as a function of bath composition, and surface microstructure and atomic compositions of thin films were investigated by SEM and EDS. And the shape change of $200\;{\AA}$ Ni-Fe nanowires made using anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) templates by electrodeposition method were observed by SEM as a function of ultrasonic treatment time and bath composition. The Fe deposition contents on the substrate non-linearly increased with Fe ion concentration over total metal ion concentration. In case of low Fe contents film, the grain size is smaller and denser than high Fe contents deposited films, and the micro Vickers hardness increased with Fe contents of electrodeposited films. These results affected the shape change of nanowire after ultrasonic treatments.
The 22%Cr-5%Ni-3%Mo duplex and 18%Cr-8%Ni austenitic stainless steels have been nitrogen permeated under the $1Kg/cm^2$ nitrogen gas atmosphere at the temperature range of $1050^{\circ}C{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$. The nitrogen-permeated duplex and austenitic stainless steels showed the gradual decrease in hardness with increasing depth below surface. The duplex stainless steel showed nitrogen pearlite at the outmost surface and austenite single phase in the center after nitrogen permeation treatment, while the obvious microstructural change was not observed for the nitrogen-permeated austenitic stainless steel. After solution annealing the nitrogen-permeated stainless steels(NPSA treatment) at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours, the hardness of the duplex and austenitic stainless steels was constant through the 2 mm thickness of the specimen, and the ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ phase of duplex stainless steel changed to austenite single phase. Tensile strengths and elongations of the NPSA-treated duplex stainless steel remarkably increased compared to those of solution annealed (SA) duplex stainless steel due to the solution strengthening effect of nitrogen and the phase change from a mixture of ferrite and austenite to austenite single phase, while the NP-treated austenitic stainless steel displayed the lowest value in elongation due to inhomogeneous deformation by the hardness difference between surface and interior.
An alternative fabrication method for carburizing steel using spark plasma sintering (SPS) is investigated. The sintered carburized sample, which exhibits surface modification effects such as carburizing, sintered Fe, and sintered Fe-0.8 wt.%C alloys, is fabricated using SPS. X-ray diffraction and micro Vickers tests are employed to confirm the phase and properties. Finite element analysis is performed to evaluate the change in hardness and analyze the carbon content and residual stress of the carburized sample. The change in the hardness of the carburized sample has the same tendency to predict hardness. The difference in hardness between the carburized sample and the predicted value is also discussed. The carburized sample exhibits a compressive residual stress at the surface. These results indicate that the carburized sample experiences a surface modification effect without carburization. Field emission scanning electron microscopy is employed to verify the change in phase. A novel fabrication method for altering the carburization is successfully proposed. We expect this fabrication method to solve the problems associated with carburization.

PURPOSE. This study was aimed to determine the effect of two chemically distinct denture cleansers and water on the surface hardness of acrylic and silicone based soft denture liners at various time intervals. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two commonly used commercial resilient liner material were selected based on their chemical composition (silicone- and acrylic-based soft liners) for this investigation. 120 cylindrical specimens were made of $15mm{\times}10mm$ dimensions (according to ASTM: D-2240-64T) in a custom made metal mold. All specimens were stored in artificial saliva throughout the study. Forty specimens were cleansed daily in 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution; forty were cleansed in sodium perborate and remaining forty specimens were daily rinsed in water. Testing was done at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months for surface hardness using a Shore A Durometer. A mean of 3 reading for each sample was subjected to one-way ANOVA, Post Hoc test and pair-t test for statistical analysis. P values of less than 0.05 were taken as statistically significant. RESULTS. Surface hardness of all the samples was significantly higher after a period of 6 months irrespective of the cleansing treatment. Minor changes were observed between control, sodium hypochlorite and sodium perborate groups with time. Greater change was observed in surface hardness of acrylic-based soft denture liners as compared to silicone-based soft liners for all groups, as time progressed. CONCLUSION. Silicone-based soft denture liners performed significantly better in all cleansing treatments than acrylic-based soft denture liners.
